Never Let Go
(2015)

Hitchcockian with an extra dose of heart and spirit.
A psychological thriller with action and a heart. Brings Hitchcock to mind with the way the intensity mounts building tension upon tension. Loved the strong female characters; this film pays tribute to women and motherhood whilst giving a friendly nod to Taken, with its premise and roof jumping acrobatics. Howard J. Ford steps it up a notch from the average action thriller incorporating his unique take on the psyche and weaving in symbolism and spiritual elements. Skimming the surface is not for him. Angela Dixon's multi-layered character is extraordinarily portrayed. Why give a speech when a look can convey so much?

All this in 90 minutes. Impressive. Looking forward to the next Ford film.

Ballot Monkeys
(2015)

Great fun
This satirical comedy series is an enjoyable take on the crazy and backstabbing world of politics. I love the fact that it aired during the lead up and right up until the night before the election. It attracted a fantastic cast of established comedy and straight actors, which says a lot for its appeal. The ludicrous UKIP jokes were a wonderful knock at a world gone mad and the PC- positive-thinking-ness of the American adviser to the Labour party may not have been exaggerated all that much at all. Ben Miller's character's meltdown was beautifully played. The whole cast did a sterling job. It was a strong ensemble piece. Overall, it had the adult members of this household happily entertained by the non- stop mayhem. And our laughter might have woken up the child contingent of this home.

K-19: The Widowmaker
(2002)

A surprisingly different take on a cold war story.
I cannot express how refreshing it was to see a submarine story told from a Russian perspective. I nearly didn't watch it as I expected the usual American take, which never depicts the Russians in a balanced Light.

The story is a good one and it's well presented by a decent script. The acting is strong. If I'm honest it was the draw of Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford that persuaded me to watch the film in the first place. These actors in the main roles give worthy performances and do at least attempt the difficult accent. Their characters are multi layered and both of them surprise the viewer by being more complex than we might at first expect. The same is true of the strong ensemble cast. Kathryn Bigolo's direction is excellent and the tension builds at just the right pace, adding to the already intense situation of the claustrophobic setting of the submarine. I even found myself holding my breath at times. I also loved the soundtrack, beautiful, atmospheric and haunting, it complemented the scenes it was used in perfectly. I thoroughly recommend this film. Disregard the moaning Minnie's with their lust for explosive action and give the more subtle action of this praiseworthy film a chance.
