Guten Tag, Ramón
(2013)

Outstanding film
This film reminds the viewer it is the little things in life that are the most important. A very well made film (nothing cheap about it) and the acting and direction are terrific. The bloke who plays Ramon is the perfect character for the role, as are all the other actors and actresses in the film. The film has many different angles to it - cruelty and kindness, wealth and poverty, but kindness certainly is the most powerful aspect of this film. I cannot believe there are so few reviews of this film, but I guess Americans don't think much of films unless they are talking American English (as shown when they dubbed the Aussie classic Max Mad in American accents). Forget English, "Buen Dia, Ramon" could not be made if were not in Spanish and German. The film is so good, after a while you forget you are reading subtitles. This is the best film I have seen all year and it is less than a month to Christmas. A must see for anyone who has a heart. The end will leave you with a warm feeling and maybe a few tears.

Mr. and Mrs. Loving
(1996)

What an eye opener
This film was rather simplistic and not completely accurate with the real events that occurred. However, the film was in some aspects a masterpiece. There was a lot of symbolism in the movie. The film was low budget and I found a bad technical flaw (TV sets need an antenna for a clear picture!). However most of the acting was excellent and the story was without parallel.

There is a brilliant documentary which I would say is superior to this film called The Loving Story. It is highly recommended to watch before seeing this film so some facts can be established first.

What stood out in the film was that racism was systemic in the so-called United States, where the deep south governments in the 60's were clearly the enemy of liberty and freedom. The film should have made a special mention to the good old white boy state of Alabama which thumbed its nose at the Supreme Court by refusing to the miscegenation laws until as late as 2000, when the vote to allow interracial marriage was barely passed.

I recommend this film to anyone who believes in freedom, democracy and justice. This obviously excludes members of the KKK who would probably burn it.

The Sting
(1973)

I finally got it!
I watched this film three times as a teenager in 1973/1974, with my friend, then my friend and his aunt, and then when I had to go along with the school class. I then found the film boring because I never understood it and there was little action. I would have been 15 or 16 at the time. The language was too speak-easy for me and the plot too adult- like for an un-worldy teenager like myself.

But I never give up. Forty years later, I watched the film again and I understood it. I found it to be quite enjoyable and liked the twists.

The acting was very good, as was the plot. There were a few bugs in the film and with modern equipment, I could freeze frame a gunshot to the head and see there was no bullet hole. Still, it was quite entertaining.

The music of course is a classic... THE ENTERTAINER!

Gravity
(2013)

Technically very flawed, quite boring and silly
Lousy film. Why? Full of technical faults and silliness. I won't spoil the film, but anyone who knows anything about space and the atmosphere will know this film is rubbish. There were far too many ridiculous scenes in the film. The story was thin. It had full on effects, but was technically weak. I found it boring. It it more suitable for the cheap thrills American market but not suitable for those who want to engage in a deep and meaningful film. I felt I wasted 2 hours of my life watching this garbage. The fact the ignorant clown sitting in the seat next to me at the cinema took the entire film getting on my nerves drinking his slurpee and feeding his fat face with junk food, he did not influence the 2/10 I gave this film. The fact this film has received such a high rating beggars belief. If you want a good film, don't waste your time with this. If you want some cheap thrills then this might be for you - but watch out for any imbeciles sitting in the seats near you.

The Central Park Five
(2012)

Will leave you angry and asking for justice to be served
A very well made documentary. It chronicles the entire event from the innocent youths being rounded up by the corrupt New York cops or prosecutor, to the mens' exoneration and beyond. It was well put together and the footage and newspaper articles were clearly represented. The victim interviews show them for what they are - innocent kids used as scapegoats and forced into confession for a crime they did not commit. The sense of injustice abounds, especially when the crooks in suits knew they had the wrong people, but went ahead with it anyway. It leaves one feeling angered and somewhat helpless, that you cannot defeat an enemy like the corrupt American justice system - especially when the system is proved wrong but refuses to show remorse or make amends, as so often happens (varies by state).

The documentary leaves the city of New York as a city of shame, one where justice is corrupt, especially for blacks and Hispanics. I was left feeling that they could happily put a bullet in the head of the prosecutor and the cops as payment for their services rendered - but these men are more decent human beings than any of the prosecutor and the corrupt police, the media and anyone else who treated them as rapist monsters. Unfortunately, no compensation has been paid to any of the victims as the City of New York does its utmost to ensure justice will not be done. It needs to protect its wallet and the phony reputation of New York's "finest". I doubt I will ever want to visit New York, the city of shame.

Moonshot
(2009)

Too many faults and boring
This film was OK, but it was destroyed with mistakes like a whooshing sound in once scene as command module and lunar module went past near the moon. It might appeal to those who know nothing about science, but to the majority of educated viewers, it is an insult to their intelligence. The final straw was when about half way thought the film, green 7-segment LED digital displays were in view. They were not even invented in 1969 and thus were not used in Apollo 11. I had to switch it off at that point - I had enough. The acting was reasonable, but on the whole I found this film boring. At least in The Dish movie (which was quite fictional), they used authentic equipment used in 1969. Producers should do their homework before embarking on a topic they know little of nothing about.

For the purists out there, don't bother with this film. Nothing beats the telecasts during moon landing in July 1969.

Idi i smotri
(1985)

A truly outstanding film
Rarely does a film like this come along. In fact, it puts a whole new dimension in film making. Although the film starts out somewhat slow, the viewer is immersed into the realism of rural life and partisans in Belorussia during WW2. As the film evolves, the viewer experiences to some extent the bleakness created by the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The bleakness suddenly turns to chaos and then a level of brutality only a Hun could be proud of, where all senses of morality and decency are absent. The acting in superb, even down to the facial expressions of the partisans. Rarely do you find such fine acting, even in the West. But of course one must consider most of actors would be well educated in the Nazi occupation of Belorussia and the evil unleashed from the monsters who killed off a third of the population of Belorussia. A sense of anger and even hopelessness is felt watching this intense war film. The film exposes in a very bad light another chapter of German crimes against humanity few in the West have learned of, crimes for which Germany can never repay now or in the future. The camera work is brilliant in the film, where the bleakness is highlighted in dull tones throughout. I would strongly advise children do not watch this film - it is simply too disturbing, to the extent it makes Saving Private Ryan look like a G-rated cartoon show. Even adults with a conscience would have difficulty coming to terms with the brutality of war as shown in this film. I suggest too the viewer researches further the German atrocities in Russia in World War 2.

Army of the Dead
(2008)

Complete and utter garbage
Like with most American films, this one is corny, narrow and stupid. That might be OK for American audiences who think Saddam was behind 911, but not for educated people. The plot was bug infested and the acting mediocre at best. The script was about as bad as it gets with maybe the exception of Bette Midler in her blasphemous movie The Thorn. I felt sorry for the actors. Whoever wrote the script should have taken a vacation and hired some high school kids who would have done a better job. The effects were nonsense, as was the hero who said he used "Physics 101" to create a Tesla coil. The people who made this film obviously know next to nothing about electronics, or for that matter physics. I gave it two stars because there was one scene where you might get a bit of a fright and it only cost me $1.99 at the local supermarket. If you value what time you have left on earth, don't watch this movie.

District 9
(2009)

Great film, but with strong apartheid overtones
I could not help feel this film is a parody about how South African police bigots treated indigenous South Africans under apartheid. The parallels are throughput the film, from start to finish. The actor they chose for the lead cop role portrayed perfectly the arrogance and brutality. The film starts somewhat slow, but one gets a sense all is not what it seems. The film gathers momentum and the action becomes intense. Some may find the accent annoying, but it does add to the realism of the film. The technical effects are excellent. Another minor annoyance was the jerky camera work. I don't know why camera operators overdo this - it was almost as bad as those B-grade American law and order shows a few years which made viewers seasick. All in all it was a good film. It takes a great producer like the Peter Jackson to produce such am entertaining but disturbing film.

The Road to Guantanamo
(2006)

Great film - highly recommended
Excellent film, showing us who the true terrorists are and how justice won't be served by a cowardly government from the land of the stupid. The acting is very good and the scenery accurate. The film depicts the humanity in the four hapless victims of American justice. One warning is the language in the film is a bit heavy at times. The film will leave many non-American viewers angry. At least the Nazis behind the kidnapping, torture and murder or innocent people were made accountable and sentenced to death or imprisonment. Not so for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their military meat heads, who have escaped any justice and are accountable to no-one. I rated it the full 10 points because it is such a worthy film. I can guess the lower rating might be partly due to the American viewers. See the film, then do your research on the Web (eg: wiki) and decide for yourself.

The Thorn
(1971)

Worst film ever made... lower than hard-core pornography
A pathetic waste of time. Poorly acted, really bad sound, and full of blasphemy and insult. I didn't think the film was funny at all although I stomach to watch all of it. It debuted shown here in Melbourne Australia and by half-time most of the patrons had walked out of the cinema in disgust. In fact there was almost a riot when people demanded their money back but the staff from the cinema had ran off in fear and the film was axed. The patrons never got a refund. The story hit the front page of the newspapers. This woman and her cohorts who made a mockery out of Jesus should have thought how they would feel if someone made a film making a joke of the holocaust.

World Trade Center
(2006)

Great film except for one appalling lie.
The film was well done, stirred up emotions and the effects were excellent. I was impressed that the film focused on the personal effects and heroism from the WTC disaster. However one big propaganda lie was told that was carefully crafted to fool the average American who believes almost anything dished out to him or her. It was dangerous, stupid and deceitful for the producers to infer that Iraq was involved in the bombings. Iraq had nothing to do with the bombings. It was as if the lies were written by George Dubya himself. I walked out of the film as soon as realised what the script writers had done. Unfortunately, it ruined what would have been a decent and moving film.

The Temptations
(1998)

Brilliant and quite a moving film
This film is one of the best. It is a movie on The Temptations featuring most of their big hits that are seamlessly integrated into the drama. I have seen it four times and undoubtedly will see it again. The actors who played the Temptation members were quite extraordinary in their accurate performances. Rather than just a mini-series, the film could have been released in cinemas in a condensed version and it would have been a major success in Australia at least. I don't understand why it was not. Unfortunately, the DVD was never released in Australia, so I had to import it from the USA. The film is quite long, so it might be best viewed over two nights. Be warned there are one or two minor scenes of drug use in the film. Overall, highly recommended. I loved it.
