Unsure how I feel overall about this remake - an odd mix of visually arresting and yet dull I can't quite fathom.
Overall I felt the film had a rather strange pacing of both too fast and too slow; I found myself wondering when the climax would finally come and was somehow disappointed when it did. The opening scene in particular felt far too in-your-face and underdeveloped. At a point when the viewer wants to understand what sort of film they're entering into, what is the feel, the vibe, it was too intense and abrupt and was not really developed later down the line.
The film seemed to me neither a horror nor a gothic classic, although the gothic element was well captured with a dark, eerie atmosphere mostly through monochrome, with the infrequent contrast of daylight. For me, nosferatu was too 'beastly' and animalistic - I personally think it'd have been more effective to have seen far less of him and less conspicuously. Initial scenes where he was shrouded in darkness were more effective. He did not change character, morph nor develop and this left him rather flat. And that accent...
However, a solid 7 for the cinematography, music, attention to detail on costumes and lighting - all very well done and are what stand out the most in my mind as an overall impression an hour later.
