Jaume Collet-Serra is a wonderful director and he loves to play with the psychological element of all things horror. The Woman in the Yard is no exception. He was behind the cult classic, Orphan. This movie will not be for everyone but due to its PG-13 rating it's still pretty tame to what it could have been since the subject matter in the movie is quite controversial. But it's a Blumhouse production so horror fans will want to go see it for that reason and they should to satisfy their own curiosity. Danielle Deadwyler kills it in the title role as Ramona, a lonely widow whose husband died in a recent car wreck leaving her temporarily disabled with 2 kids in a lonely farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly, one day a woman in a black shroud appears on her property and she just sits there. This is when the movie starts to simmer. Who is this woman and why does she suddenly appear or is she a ghost or just imaginary and what does she want with this family? The director does a good job with uncovering the questions and leaving the audience with even more after it's over and you're walking out of the theater. I would see it again when it comes out on video but will definitely recommend it if you want to be entertained for 90 minutes and have your imagination suspended.
Snow White is wonderful fairy tale we all grew up with. This 2025 version falls quite short of the mark and the memories. The only person besides Zegler and Gal Gadot who I recognized in the credits is Tituss Burgess and it's only his voice. Rachel Zegler is a terrible Snow White. Her singing can't cover up for her poor acting.and she is hardly convincing. Special effects and flashy sets only get you so far. Why could they not have real dwarves in the roles? Those acting folks need to eat, too. This is a mess from start to end and comes off as phony and stagey. I, usually am not critical but Snow White is a box-office bomb!!! Skip it and see something else.... NOT recommended.
Stellar old Hollywood cast in this headlined by Mary Kay Place who plays Diane Rhodes, a single aging parent whose only son is a drug addict Jake Lacy does a wonderful acting job playing son, Brian. Diane is there for everyone else and helps out the needy in the aging community by volunteering her time and friendship to those in her town. Her cousin is dying of cancer and she goes to the hospital frequently to look in on her. However, their relationship is frayed by an indiscretion that Diane committed long ago and her cousin has a hard time forgiving her. The movie explores Diane and who's there for her NOW when she starts falling apart inside. This is on Kanopy right now. Check it out. Definitely recommended!
