Velma
(2023)

Damaging to the franchise's status quo
I went into this assuming the collective opinion had to be exaggerating about Velma. Sadly, I was mistaken. This take on the characters is damaging to the status quo of the Scooby Doo! Franchise. It isn't the lack of Scooby, or the fact that ethnicities, characteristics and personalites are changed, it's the fact that they're all so damn unbearable, and it isn't just the "gang", it's everyone with a speaking role. None of the jokes are funny. I couldn't find myself warming up to the brand of "humor" at any point through the first episode, and when it's not the lack of humor, it's the highbrow themes being broken down to you after the joke didnt land in a conversation between characters or the cringe-inducing situational humor. How this fell into full production is a true mystery of it's own.

Very Decent
This is a really good anime. Everything about it, visually, reminds me of an animated DC project. There's even a great attention to filipino culture. Sadly, this anime wasn't able to hook me. I think the story builds up quicker than you're able to latch onto everything involved. There's little character development and even less explanation what everyone's role is. Perhaps more episodes would've allowed more time for explanations like those? I have to imagine 6 episodes restricted scene time in some storytelling scenarios.

Gin no Guardian

Good Gaming Anime
A lot of the reviews here call the anime confusing. It's not all that complex. The real world and the game differentiate vastly. There's also scenes of him logging in and out of the game. Everything doesn't always have to be explained in a story. Other than that, this is an anime that just focuses on a boy playing a game with an end goal in mind. If you like the RPG anime genre, I'd recommend this one.

More Stars??
I would really like to give this show a perfect 10. There are a number of elements that make A Certain Scientific Railgun an excellent viewing experience. Everything from all that is Academy City, the characters and supporting cast, (English dub) voice acting, soundtrack/score, character design, animation and the lore are all fantastic. I really love the script & the way it's written, there are just so many lines and moments that stick with you. Similarly, I love the characters and the strong convictions they hold, they have such strong wills, it's impressive.

There *really* aren't a lot of things I can complain about when it comes to this show. With that being said, making your way through the series can get confusing.

First off, being someone that watched the other shows based in Academy City, there are episodic storylines that are revisited and almost copied completely. Second, season two almost takes the way of loosely rebooting. I'm not too sure why the show was written in this way. I understand wanting to explain Mikoto's hardships, because when we met her in A Certain Magical Index, it was almost at the climax of her complication. But with creating the sister series, was it not decided to do backstory initially? It feels a lot like backtracking, or like someone wrote an entire story and got a lot of pages mixed up.

All in all, even with the timeline choppiness, I would still recommend this show to anyone that was looking for a good anime. It checks a lot of boxes in terms of genre in my opinion, and it's a good time, genuinely. I'm looking forward to more Railgun.

Swamp Thing

Leaves something to be desired
I don't feel negatively about this show in any shape or form. I think (directorially) the show looks great. I like how the cgi is used throughout the episodes. The actors don't make me cringe or wonder how another actor would've done. I think the place where this show falls off for me is the lack of depth. There's such a small amount of mystery surrounding everything, that the story in each episode just doesn't seem to keep me hooked. I've been finding myself glancing away from the tv, or just having this on in the background as opposed to seriously viewing. I no longer question why DC isn't fighting to bring this back (even though it was cancelled for a completely different reason). I didn't feel this way watching Doom Patrol.

Spider-Man: Far from Home
(2019)

No, no, no
I really love Holland as Spider-Man. He's great as Peter Parker. But my issues with this iteration lie entirely in the creative direction of the films. Marvel has done so much to "reinvent" Peter Parker and his alter ego, he might as well be a completely different person in the solo outings we've seen. As someone who reads the comics, I can't tell you how many aspects were copied from Miles Morales and his Spider-Man.

I don't dislike Zendaya as Michelle, I mean "MJ" (a not-so clever change of name from Homecoming to Far from Home) but what is this? Who is she *supposed* to be, really?

People absolutely hated Ultimate Spider-Man (the animated series), Marvel was 1000% aware of this, so they completely rebooted the animated Spider-Man. But then, they went and placed the MCU's Spider-Man under SHIELD, giving him suits and missions, which felt completely awkward, and completely took away from Parker's solo life & identity. Which brings me to another point.

In Homecoming, Peter only really worried about his friends. He stated this on numerous occasions. In Far from Home, he only cared about his trip, and getting to spend time with Michelle. While the latter was more in line with Peter's usual motives, there's never *really* any good, hard, solid reason why he chooses to don the costume. I mean, sure, The Avengers can't do everything, especially in recent times. But why does that create a dilemma for Parker? I never really feel as if it's his responsibility in these films. Even if he did look up to Tony Stark (now deceased), why do these things become Peter's responsibility? I'm just not sold on these movies. I'm 100% sure this lack of danger & responsibility is the reason they chose to reveal Peter's identity. It's literally the only thing that could've put fire underneath him as who he is. It was an easy cop out.

This trilogy for me has been one and done (completely fine with one viewing) up to this point. These movies don't give me anything to look forward to, everything is just an easy mess made to look pretty.

I think writers wrote the MCU into a hole with the masterpiece that was Infinity War. As incredible as that film was, I think it put the world and it's heroes into a state that was too shattered to fix itself by any other means other than the easiest possible turnouts to cause turmoil.

Legends of Tomorrow
(2016)

This keeps getting worse
Progressively, these CW DC shows are getting worse by the season. I really liked most of them in the beginning, but making changes as often as they do, on top of the acting and the general tone (of the shows). These shows are literally just something to watch compared to the DC Universe shows like Doom Patrol and Titans. Those are shows you actually find yourself invested in, with great acting, plots, and directing.

I know it's streaming compared to prime time, but a lot of the same names touch these projects. So I expect a quality standard.

Instead, we just have (what feels like) the shadows of comic book stories.

Assassination Nation
(2018)

Nice & Toxic
There are some interesting points in this movie. It just falls flat in the end. It wasn't realistic in the first place, but it was fine being that way, it was enjoyable. The writing was good up until a certain point, then the plot just felt forced a certain way. Then it just became a thing about "toxic masculinity".

Halfway through the movie, a girl killed another girl with a strike from a baseball bat. Then in the montage, a woman was beating another woman in a parking lot.

Then out of nowhere, all the women just disappeared, and the guys became murderous. No doubt a SJW transitioned this into something about toxic masculinity.

Brightburn
(2019)

Save your money
This is a really bad movie. Save your money and just go watch something name-brand, I promise literally any iteration of Superman is better than this.

I really wanted to like this movie. It was off to a quick start, but sadly. That isn't always a good thing. There are seemingly no segway between scenes in the opening act, all the scenes just seem random and pieced together. I'm not sure if there were scenes that got cut or what, but there's practically no depth. The lack of depth extends from the scenes to the characters. I don't ever see the motive behind his anger. He's just a psychopath kid that wants to kill anyone that tells him no "yawn". This movie is incredibly boring and for a 7 million dollar budget, it really should not be this way.

For a movie that sells itself as "if Superman wasn't a good guy" there's also literally no buildup to the kid being normal to figuring out his abilities. He puts his hand in a lawnmower and next thing you know he's using his laser vision to slice through doors. I guess invulnerability and laser vision go hand in hand? I'm not saying he's kryptonian, but I can't imagine these are the kinda things one would pick up overnight, the kid didn't exactly sell himself as a genius.

His parents act completely clueless halfway through the movie. Talking about him when he's literally in the next room (guess he doesn't have super hearing, how convenient). Still pretending he's a child when they've seen the things he can do.

It's like they wrote this movie to suit a bad plot and not minds or hearts. The writers insult the viewers intelligence by just ignoring general logic. This could have and should have been a drastically different film. This is what happens with three Gunns, evidently.

Black Summer
(2019)

I was actually recommended this show...
Two friends of mine recommended this show. I'm studying to be a writer and I can't say it enough how awful of a time this show was. I'm currently watching the first episode and there's not a believable sequence in this entire episode.

I'm supposed to believe that one person causing people to get left behind because he lied about his sickness isn't being blamed by all these people who now have to figure out what to do with their lives?

His wife on the other hand, took him into someone else's home just to get sick and then she just leaves? Not even concerned about the woman she JUST saw? OKAY.

The whole "Barbara" scene was just incredibly stupid.

I'm not even gonna go into details on all the other issues I came across. This is most certainly NOT the quality we've come to accept and love in this age of media.

No-look (hard) pass

The Flash: All Doll'd Up
(2018)
Episode 5, Season 5

Pure Stupidity
This episode was one of the ones earlier in this season that felt like the older episodes until it got deeper in. The villain was fantastic in character, although, there was no arc behind his motive, he just fell flat and served no purpose, not even mentioning how he told Barry what he wanted to do, only to do something completely different, for no reason whatsoever.

It also really bothers me that Iris is basically a superhuman. She's invincible in the hands of these writers and it's just disgusting to watch. It made no sense why Plastic Man couldn't just go rescue Barry on his own, and it ABSOLUTELY made no sense when Iris dove off the roof to save Barry, considering the fact that there was a man who could stretch his limbs at will. Her first thought was to dive off the roof??? Seriously. It's just awful, lazy writing. I used to love this show and now I don't even think about it because of this kind of stupidity.
