The Foreigner
(2017)

Could've been better
Jackie Chan hasn't really done an American movie in some time. He did "Skiptrace" which wasn't released in theaters, and quite frankly was pretty bad. When I saw the trailer for this movie I was excited, however like a lot of movies nowadays, the trailer makes the movie better than it actually is.

Chan plays "Quan" who loses his daughter in a terrorist bombing. He is of course heartbroken and the only thing he now wants is to know who and why this bombing took place. This is where we meet Pierce Brosnan's character "Liam" who is the head of some type of British government official but is from Ireland.

Quan starts to play around with Liam and his men because Quan believes Liam knows exactly who is responsible for the bombing. These scenes are the best part of the movie because even at 60 years old, Chan is still a bad**** on screen. The fight scenes are few and far between and they aren't your typical Jackie Chan fights. They are short and brutal which makes sense for his character but disappointing because I wanted more.

The "surprise" ending isn't that hard to figure out and it left me wanting a little more. Chan is obviously the best part of this movie and I wish the focus was more on him and his character than Brosnan's Liam. A decent action thriller that fans of Jackie Chan can appreciate.

5.5/10

It
(2017)

IT does the job
I never saw the mini series or read the book but obviously have heard of the story. When you think of "IT" you think of Pennywise the clown. What I didn't know was that "IT" is just an evil entity that can take multiple forms to scare kids. Think of a boggart from Harry Potter where it turns into what you fear the most, this is just way more evil.

The movie reminded me of Stranger Things but had a much darker tone with more mature adult themes, such as a relationship between a father and daughter, the loss of parents, and the death of a younger brother. The young cast all do a fantastic job with a few funny one liners to break the tension.

There were a few good scares and intense scenes which I enjoyed. One minor problem I had was some of the actions these kids take in certain moments. However, they are just kids as opposed to adults making ridiculous decisions in a horror movie.

Even if you don't enjoy horror movies, I think you should give this a shot. It's a little on the bloody side but nothing over the top, aka "Saw". A good solid horror movie.

American Assassin
(2017)

Good, not great
For me, American Assassin is another movie that had I not seen the trailer, I may have enjoyed it more. The story begins on a beach with our main character, Mitch Rapp, and his soon to be fiancé. But out of no where, the beach comes under attack by terrorists and his fiancé is murdered right in front of him. Now, why he wasn't killed either doesn't really make sense, but if that happens, there is no movie.

Fast forward 18 months later and you can tell Mitch has a goal and one goal only...to kill the people who murdered his fiancé. Little does he know the CIA have been following him around in hopes to recruit. When he accepts the "job" he is sent to Michael Keaton's character who is supposedly the best of the best.

Both Dylan O'Brien (Mitch)and Michael Keaton do good jobs in their roles respectively. There is a few twists and turns but nothing you don't see coming and the action, while limited is pretty good as well. I just hoped for a little more and I felt the ending was a bit anti climatic. The second half of this movie is Mitch's first mission with Keaton and the guy they are after isn't all what he seems to be.

This is a book series that I hadn't even heard of so I can't compare the two. But it's a decent action flick and the ending sets itself up for multiple sequels. 6.5/10

Atomic Blonde
(2017)

Brilliantly filmed action movie
Some action movie directors don't know how to properly film an action sequence. The camera is too shaky or they use to many cuts and edits to try and blend the fight together. It's a big pet peeve of mine. Needless to say, the director of this film knows his s*&^! And that to me, made this movie so much better and enjoyable.

Set in the 80s, Charlize Theron's character is sent to Germany to find a "list" which is hidden inside a watch. But from the moment she touches down in Berlin, she has other assassins trying to kill her. Because this was set in the 80s, the music used in the film cater to the decade which was awesome.

Towards the end of the movie, there is a 7-10 minute action sequence that was one continuous shot. It was amazing to watch. One of my favorite sequences I've ever scene in an action movie. All the fight scenes were done perfectly. My only complaint with this movie was the end when there were one too many twists. But just a small complaint for what was a great action movie. A solid 8/10

Dunkirk
(2017)

Good but not amazing
I never knew about the story of Dunkirk before the movie. Over 30000 troops are stranded on a beach as the enemy bombs them from the air time and time again. In this movie we follow 3 different stories that all intertwine together.

First are a few soldiers that start on the beach and are trying their best to get off it. The second is a father and son who set sail to go and help the men on the beach. And the third are a few pilots trying to counter the planes that are bombing the beach.

All the actors do a great job and I loved the cinematography. However, I think the hype that I heard about this movie let me down a bit. I felt it was a bit anti-climatic as well. I did enjoy how the 3 stories came together but other than that, my big expectations may have ruined it a bit for me. So while I enjoyed the movie, I wasn't blown away so I can only give it a 7/10

War for the Planet of the Apes
(2017)

Don't go in thinking it's a full blown action movie
While the word "War" is in the title for this third installment of the franchise, it's not a full of numerous scenes of action. There's one at the beginning and one at the end. In between the opening and the climax, we follow Ceasar and a few other apes on a journey to find the man that killed his wife and son.

For me personally, I enjoyed every minute of journey. Along the way they pick up a young girl who isn't able to speak, and another ape who goes by "bad ape" played by Steve Zahn. I thought his performance was awesome and he was the comedic relief to what was a mostly serious movie throughout.

I've read other reviews saying that "Man" are portrayed as the villains, and that it should be the other way around. That we shouldn't be caring about the apes. Maybe in the real world, I would feel that way, but in this movie, "Man" is what kept this war going. After the first battle scene, Ceasar lets a few survivors live as an act of mercy, this only backfires as the survivors are able to pinpoint Ceasar's hidden location which ends up getting his wife and son murdered.

Even at almost 2 1/2 hours and minimal action scenes, I loved this movie. The apes relationships with each other and with the young girl they find are awesome. Woody Harrelson plays the main bad guy but even he has a reason behind his motives that might make sense to a few people. His scenes with Ceasar are intense, although I was a bit disappointed how is story ended. Either way, this was one of the best so far this year for me. 9/10

Spider-Man: Homecoming
(2017)

Another good Marvel movie
Spider-Man: Homecoming might be the most light hearted movie so far in the Marvel Universe. It essentially begins right after Peter Parker has his fight in Captain America: Civil War. The opening is Peter filming his journey after being recruited by Tony Stark. Just a little backstory as to how he showed up in Civil War.

Back to real life, Peter struggles with the normality. He wants so badly to be back with the Avengers that he's missing out on his high school experience.

The villain in the movie is the Vulture played by Michael Keaton, who I really enjoyed in the role. There was a deeper meaning behind his motives which caught me off guard and I liked it.

It's a fun film and isn't as intense as most Marvel movies. Tom Holland is a good young actor and his charisma was perfect as the new Spider-Man. A solid 8/10

The Mummy
(2017)

Low expectations help
They say this isn't a reboot of the 1999 "The Mummy" with Brendan Fraser, but I have to disagree. It's pretty much the exact same plot with poor execution. It's not as funny and the action scenes feel too "Tom Cruise" for a "horror film." This was not scary at all, nothing made me tense up and worry about any character who was in danger. Much more action oriented like a Tom Cruise film. I wish it were different but I'm always coming back to Tom Cruise. I think he ruined this movie. His attempt at humor with a more than a few one liners were laughable.

The mummy played by Sofia Boutella does what she can with what she was given. But it was mostly her walking seductively and raising her arms making things happen. They also wasted the talent of Jake Johnson from New Girl. Something happens to his character very early on and then proceeds to pop up from time to time whenever the plot tells him too.

While this is mostly a negative review, I can't hate it for what it was. I wasn't terribly bored and I've seen a lot worse. The fact that I had heard countless times how terrible this was and how my expectations were so low, I'll give this a 5/10 Hopefully, Universal can get this "Dark Universe" back on track and make some more entertaining movies because I like the concept and idea, just need the execution.

Busanhaeng
(2016)

A fun thriller
This is only the second Korean film I've ever watched, (the first one being "OldBoy")and like "Oldboy" I enjoyed this quite a bit. The story is about a father who has a strained relationship with his young daughter, so much so the daughter wants to leave him and live with her mom instead. The daughter wants to ride the train by herself to Busan, the father decides he needs to go with her to try and save what little is left on his relationship with his daughter.

Once on the train the fun truly begins. The "zombies" are relentless and people turn quite quickly after being bitten which I thought was awesome. Another aspect of the zombies was when the train would go through tunnels, the zombies effectively go blind. When a group of survivors need to get through a few of the train cars they use this to their advantage but only have a certain amount of time before the train comes out of the tunnel.

You feel for the "good guys" and there are some comedic moments to relieve the tension with a few one liners here and there. One problem I had was towards the end, some of the decisions that were made by the protagonist weren't really smart compared to the others that were made earlier in the film. But just a minor blip in what was otherwise a fun and entertaining zombie movie.

Baby Driver
(2017)

Simply Awesome
I remember first watching the trailer for this movie and not really thinking much of it. If not for the high praise of multiple reviews, I may have skipped this. Thankfully, I decided to give it a go and what a fantastic film this is.

The movie opens with a bank heist followed by the getaway car chase that would put the Fast and Furious franchise to shame. The main reason...its so much more realistic. This scene lets us know how good of a driver "Baby" is, as well as how the music will play an integral part of the film.

The acting is top notch all the way around with funny one liners from almost all of the characters. The action is fun, the music is better, and the story brings it all together. Highly recommend this movie. One of my favorites so far this year.

Boyhood
(2014)

Wanted more
No doubt, the concept of "Boyhood" was awesome. Watching these characters age throughout the film was a joy to watch. They never tell you when the year has changed but you can pick up on subtle things like the technology or what the new fad is. One scene in particular was great when a couple of the characters were talking about if a new Star Wars movie was possible. Who knew that when this movie would be released, that there would indeed be a new Star Wars film on the horizon.

The biggest problem for me was, nothing really exciting happens. Is there some conflict? Sure a couple of times but nothing special. Just shows that the mom has bad taste in men as she marries two separate drunks and leaves them both. The best scenes are with Ethan Hawke who plays the father. However, he wasn't the main focus as the title would indicate, it's about the young boy who we watch grow into a young adult.

It was funny at times, but overall its really just a movie about a young boy growing up. He's not that likable of a character, yet you don't hate him either. I guess I expected more after such hype. I bit of a disappointment but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Trainwreck
(2015)

Cliché, but hilarious
The plot of Trainwreck is nothing special. It's a pretty basic Judd Apatow comedy with hilarious dialogue and physical comedy. Amy Schumer, is our main character who was taught at a very young age by her cheating father that monogamy isn't realistic. Fast forward to present day and we see that she has taken this mindset and has countless hook ups while "dating" one of them played by John Cena who did an awesome job.

She's given an assignment at work to do a story on a doctor who is changing the way surgeries are done. Bill Hader is that doctor who also happens to be great friends with Lebron James (who plays himself). Long story short, Amy and Hader fall for each other but then conflict ensues, they fight, both are depressed and so on.

Lebron James steals every scene he's in, it was pretty impressive to say the least. The beginning is a bit slow but there is enough comedy to hold your attention. It's a funny movie and if you're a fan of Apatow films, you'll enjoy this one.

Ex Machina
(2014)

A decent thriller
Ex Machina revolves around the intelligences of A.I. Oscar Isaac plays a character that has created a self aware robot. He owns the biggest search engine in the world and is also one of the smartest men on earth. He handpicks an employee who works for his company to come out to his secluded house in the middle of no where. This man's name is Caleb and he gets to test the robot and see just how smart she is.

Right away, when Caleb first arrives to the house and meets Nathan (Oscar Isaac), you get a sense that this guy may be hiding something. As the plot unfolds and we get to see more of this house and what's hidden inside the walls, you realize this man has a dark secret. Nathan and the robot named Ava, bond quickly and Ava develops feelings for him. This leads to Nathan snooping around the property for other clues.

The climax has a few twists that I enjoyed and the ending works perfectly. It was a good take on today's society and how we use so much technology. I wouldn't be surprised that if in the near future something like this is actually created.

Jurassic World
(2015)

The Park is back
22 years ago we were introduced to "Jurassic Park", the proposed theme park where we could go and see dinosaurs in the flesh. While the chaos ensued before the park could open, in "Jurassic World" the park is open to the public and it seems to be doing very well. So well in fact, the owner wants a new attraction, aka dinosaur so terrifying even the adults will have nightmares.

Predictable plot as this new hybrid dinosaur is much smarter than expected and easily gets out of containment. But this is when the action really picks up as they try to track it down before it's able to get to where the people are. Chris Pratt plays a former Navy Seal who has been working with four velociraptors. We see that they obey him and he's built trust and a relationship with each of them.

There are more than a few scenes that are a nod to the original which I enjoyed, the pace of the movie also does a good job with a few light-hearted and comedic moments to relieve the tension. It was fun ride that was more than satisfactory and I'm sure there will be sequels in the near future. 8/10

Spy
(2015)

Funny and serious...kind of
Within the first five minutes of this movie you will get the sense that while you are in for a fun ride with plenty of action, you will also get the same amount, if not more, comedy. Melissa McCarthy is the lead and is sent undercover because the four best agents are all well known by the lead villain (Rose Byrne).

The action that ensues are met with pretty good fight and action choreography, along with the hilarious one liners from the entire cast. I think every line of dialogue spoken by Jason Statham's character was hilarious. All he does is explain his amazing feats and accomplishments which no living human being could possibly have done. He also believes there is a real "face/off" machine from the movie "Face/Off".

Rose Byrne is the villain and even she brings some comedy to the table. She might have the best line in the entire film. You'll know which one when you watch it. All the actors worked perfectly well and I was laughing throughout the entire movie. A solid action/comedy 8/10

The Loft
(2014)

Trying to hard for cheap twists
This movie was shot back in 2011 but wasn't released until this past year. That usually isn't a good omen for a movie but the premise intrigued me so I gave it a shot. Needless to say I should've skipped it.

The plot is simple, a group of 5 men share a loft so they can cheat on their wives and do whatever else they want to. The only rules are 1. No one else but the 5 can know and 2. They must tell the others when the loft is in use so to not have an accidental meet up. Right from the beginning the dilemma occurs as one of the men show up to the loft to find a dead girl lying in bed. From there all 5 men show up and the movie takes off.

Throughout the movie we are switched between the past and how the loft became to be, and the present in which the five of them try to figure out who did this and why. The biggest problem however, is that none of these five characters are likable. They all cheat and lie to their wives and to each other. The wives and the mistresses aren't likable either, so when we go back in time it's not interesting.

When we do finally find out everything, the first twist was good and I thought that this wasn't such a waste of time. But it wasn't finished and they added another twist, which just added to the disappointment. The overall idea was good but the execution wasn't there. 4/10

Chappie
(2015)

Weird, but enjoyable
I'm not sure where to begin my review for this Sci/fi movie. All I know is that after watching it I can recommend it.

Set in the near future where robots are part of the police force, the guy who invented the robots has found something new in his research. He's found out how to create a robot who can think for itself. Series of events lead him to getting abducted by a group of gangsters who believe that he can simply turn a switch and make the robots help them into robbing a bank.

This all leads to him activating "Chappie", our main robot. Chappie learns from actions of who is around him. There are some comedic parts during these scenes as he acts like a gangster and starts to talk slang. The problem was two of the three gangsters were not the best of actors. Apparently they are part of a South African rap group.

Throughout the film you start to feel for this robot and when the climax starts you notice that Chappie has changed the way these gangsters think. They care for him too and try their best to help him. I will say some scenes in the end are a bit cliché, but the resolution to what happens in the end was clever. I think the last 25 minutes or so are very entertaining and really tie everything together. A solid 7/10.

Pitch Perfect 2
(2015)

just OK
The first Pitch Perfect was a pleasant surprise. It didn't do the big box office numbers this one is making. It seemed like they tried way too hard with a plot that wasn't necessary. This was your typical Hollywood sequel that they made purely for money purposes. While I did laugh more often than not, it didn't have the the spark of the first film.

The plot is put into motion because "Fat Amy" has a wardrobe malfunction performing in front of the President. The Barden Bellas are suspended because of it and the only way to get reinstated is if they win the "World Championships". Other than that, there's not much conflict besides a little debacle between the group. There was a character of Latino decent in which she only said things terrible about the race. Sure some of them were funny, but I found most of her performance annoying.

Another thing is, while talented, Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy) shouldn't be on screen as much as she should. The reason she was so good in the first one was because she had the right amount of screen time. She was essentially the second lead this time around and it was too much for me.

The 2 commentators in the film are back and really are just there to make terrible jokes about women, race and anything else. I enjoyed it, but because it doesn't come close to the original I can't really recommend it. It's just an OK film.

Oldeuboi
(2003)

A twist for the ages
I heard countless times how good of a movie this was from critics and fans alike. I watched a preview for it and what I saw was an action movie. While there is a few action scenes (one in particular that was beautifully shot) this is by no means an action movie. There are some cringe worthy moments of torture but it all works and not over done. Most of it happens on screen and you only hear what happens.

The plot is about a man who was kept under watch in the same room for 15 years. He is released out of the blue and has vowed to find out who and why this was done to him. He meets a young girl named "Mi-do" and they quickly find a sense compassion and love towards one another.

As the story unfolds we learn about who and why. When we the audience find out the reason I was blown away. Not since I watched the first "Saw" movie did I feel so shocked. It was one of the most brilliant twists I've ever witnessed and made me feel for the character even more because of it.

I haven't watched the American remake and don't intend to after the horrible reviews and plot changes I read about. If you're a fan of movies and don't mind subtitles, I highly recommend this one.

The Wedding Ringer
(2015)

meh
Kevin Hart is one of my favorite stand up comedians. As far as his films are concerned, the only one I can think of that I liked was "Think like a Man" and "Ride Along." The premise is simple, Kevin Hart's character runs a business and pretends to be a grooms best man. He has a variety of different packages for sale. In this particular case, our groom purchases the "Golden Tux" package. He must bring together 7 groomsmen as well as attend and help with the wedding preparations.

Josh Gad plays the groom to be and I've always found him funny but here he doesn't bring to the table what I expected. While he has some funny lines and a bit of physical comedy, he wasn't up to par from what I've seen previously.

The story plays out very predictable and while the characters aren't unlikeable, they aren't really people you care about. Having no expectations and still not feeling very entertained I can only give this movie a 4/10.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
(2015)

Did it's job
I've never read a comic book or graphic novel in my life. But the way that Marvel has brought this universe together is fantastic and I'm enjoying the ride. I don't care if the hardcore fans criticize it for not following or staying true to the comics. This movie was entertaining from beginning to end.

It's a pretty simple plot. A robot or AI gone bad named Ultron wants to destroy the world. The Avengers need to stop him. Nothing complicated about it. There is plenty of action and quick one liners to keep the mood light hearted. I've seen others complain about the fact there are so many different characters but it worked for me. They were all interesting and have stories of their own.

Plain and simple, if you are a fan of the Marvel movies this won't disappoint. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Purge: Anarchy
(2014)

Similar yet different from the first
In my opinion, the whole idea of "The Purge" is quite ridiculous and the fact that their are people who get caught out in the streets for these 12 hours are just plain stupid. It's not a random day and time, these people have a very good indication of when this is going down. So in the case of our first 2 characters, they are out driving with only an hour or so before it starts. Why in the world would you cut it that close??? But I suppose without that, there wouldn't be a movie.

It's similar to the first, but instead of it being in a house with a family being hunted, this one takes place out on the street in the middle of the action. A lone man who is out to get revenge for his lost son, saves 4 civilians from a bunch of what look like SWAT team members.

As the movie moves along the plot picks up a bit with random killings here and there and we learn more about our group of five. Towards the end, it turns into a video game so to speak. The rich have bought the right to Purge. They put our group of five into an arena where they hunt them down. It was entertaining to say the least.

Like in the first film, there were several times where someone is saved at the last second. So it was pretty easy to tell when someone was going to survive. The ending brings everything full circle and it was somewhat satisfactory. It was a pleasant surprise considering I wasn't a huge fan of the first one. I liked this one much better for a 6/10.

Fast & Furious 7
(2015)

A perfect send off
If you watched Furious 6 & 7 back to back it would feel like one very long movie. 7 picks up right where 6 left off. However 3 or 4 years have passed since the events of the last movie. No need to go into detail about this film. You get what you expect, ridiculous car chases, death defying stunts that no human could possibly do, and yet it's so much fun to watch.

The ending does give Paul Walker's character a perfect send off. Considering he had filmed about 85% of the movie, there were only a few times I could tell it wasn't him. Plain and simple, if you're a fan of the previous films then you will have no trouble sitting back and enjoying the ride. 9/10

You're Next
(2011)

Bloody fun
I heard a few good things about this movie and having not watched a horror film in quite some time I thought I would give this a shot. It won't win any awards for the acting or the story but it did its job. It's a slasher film with a sense of realism along with clever kills that I enjoyed watching and laughed at.

The first 20 minutes or so are a bit boring as we are introduced to all the characters. Most of them aren't very likable so when the killing actually begins the movie becomes much more entertaining. You almost root for them to be killed, but the one savior is the main character Erin who we do like. When the chaos begins, she takes charge and tries to help everyone.

There is a couple of "twists" that weren't terribly hard to figure out. What I did like was that at a few different points, the masked killers get tired and need to take a breather. Most slasher films it seems the bad guy never gets tired. It made the movie more realistic and had a sense of humor so to speak.

Look past some mediocre acting and enjoy the kills. The one at the end was my favorite, had to do with a blender but it's not what you think. I enjoyed the movie for what it was, a solid 6/10

Nightcrawler
(2014)

Well done Jake
I always believe that when the main character in a movie isn't likable I lose all interest because I don't care what happens. This movie proved me wrong because of Jake Gyllenhaal's performance. He plays a guy named "Lou" who we learn in the beginning is a thief and sells stolen goods for cash. While driving home, he comes upon a car crash where a van pulls to the side and a couple guys with camera's hop out and start to film it. He overhears them talking about selling the footage and whatnot. He approaches them for a job and the guy tells him to take a hike, not that politely though.

This is where he gets the idea and wants to do this himself. He buys a camcorder, police radio and hires a guy off the street to be his gps so to speak. He learns the LA cop codes and only goes after the graphic accidents. He becomes so successful he's able to buy a new car.

About half way is when you realize how terrifying this guy can be. When he beats the cops to a crash, he moves a victim so that he can get a better shot. What's most important to him, is him and his success and doesn't care about anything else. The ending will sum of the type of person he is. I hated the guy, but he was interesting and I was intrigued at how far he was willing to go. A solid 8/10
