No Country for Old Men
(2007)

saw this yesterday-WOW!!!!! Coens channel Peckinpah!
I'd have to say that it's the best film i've seen in the theater this year. It's weird how the Coens work,...either this awful comedies like big Lebowski or great intense dramas like Miller's Crossing. This is in the 2nd category and their best work since Blood Simple. It simply pulls you into this weird barren landscape and you don't leave. Amazing work from both Javier and Brolin and of course Tommy Lee Jones.

I loved the atmosphere and locations used, so bleak and so barren, just like real life. The fact that there was no music soundtrack added to this. It was like an art-house film filtered thru Sam Peckinpah. The violence and evil vibe was prevalent throughout the entire film and it really kept my eyes from even blinking.

Masterfully shot and edited....some have argued that the 3rd act is a let-down but what where they expecting, Josh Brolin is killed offscreen and makes for a very anti-climatic finale.

Just like real life, there's no real pay-off.

It works

The Big Lebowski
(1998)

this movie sucks
I like the Coen Bros usually,....Fargo doesn't seem as great so many years later but films like Miller's Crossing the recent and very excellent No Country For Old Men are masterpieces,....but this should be changed to The Big Nothing. God, this movie sucks so bad. It was tedious to get thru it. Why do people love this movie so much? I thought it sucked worse than House Of The Dead. Talk about bad stilted dialog, poorly staged scenes, and uninspired scripting....hard to believe it's the Coens at all since their stuff is usually really great. This movie has attained almost cult status and for what? Pure crap. I'd rather watch a Troma film made for 50 bucks.

The Big Sleep
(1946)

not as good as I had hoped
It started off nicely. Having read some Chandler books, it was interesting to see Bogart doing the role of Marlowe. The dialog totally reeked of that hard-boiled style all us noir fans love. There was some really clever and nicely done dialog sequences early on. Problem was, though,...at least for me, the plot was all over the place. And the movie was just too long. I kept wondering what the hell was going on at some parts. Just too many references to other people and too many names to grab hold of.

And while the scenes with Bogart and Bacall are legendary, wasn't she a bit young for him? lol All in all, not bad, but definitely not the 'classic' I'd been led to believe this was. IMHO, of course.

Motor Home Massacre
(2005)

the spirit of Ed Wood
this movie is so awful that it's great! Awful continuity and acting, matched with a funny backwoods horror story about a motorhome full of sexy chicks and stupid guys,...this is what low-budget horror is all about. Love the box cover art with the chainsaw and the maniac, neither of which are in the actual movie. Lionsgate rules for putting this out! All of the girls have big racks so the filmmakers obviously had a clue. Love the earlier daytime scenes where there was junk on the camera lens. You'd think they would have re-shot because it's so noticeable, not just a spec of dust/dirt or sunspots but this big area of junk totally there for all to see during a bright shot and moving camera. LOL! this rules so much! It should be shown at drive-in's as a double feature with Curse Of Pirate Death. I would pay for that!

Le notti di Cabiria
(1957)

simply amazing.
I've only recently become a foreign cinema fan in the last 5 years. Was exposed to Italian horror films many years before that but in recent years have watched more of the classics, non-genre type stuff. Saw La Dulce Vita last April and loved it. last week, this was watched. Boy, this is good. Very oddly constructed scenes at time and the B&W really sets the tone for this odd tale of prostition. Lots of symbolism about religion and class in 1940's Italy.

Fellini is a true master.

The lead actress seems like a real person, not an actress, and so many of the extras as well(they probably were not actors),...it really gives you this odd feel. Never too many cuts of C-U shots either, which i like.

A Simple Plan
(1998)

wow was this movie good!!!!!!!
I am watching it right now, the bar scene,....this is my 2nd viewing. 1st viewing was about a year back and loved it. Turned it on due to a friend of mine watching it last night on my word that it's good and they loved it. So I'm watching it again. It really sucks you in. Coming from a smalltown myself where it snows and the people who define stereotypes to a certain extent live, it really works well for me. The casting is great. Paxton and Thorton could easily be related, and their on screen mannerisms really do this justice. The 3rd guy, whose name I don't know, is great, too. And Fonda, well, her character is one of the catalysts as essentially she is the downfall to the whole scheme. If only Paxton's character didn't tell her(which he wasn't supposed to), everything would have been fine. lol. The acting on Billy Bob's part is great...the mannerisms Add to this a nice visual-great cinematography. Loved how barren it was! The crows! It was nice. Snow and barren landscapes always works in movies for me.

As much as Sam Raimi is know for Evil Dead and Spiderman, I think some of his finest work is The Gift and this great thriller A Simple Plan. Really good!

Day of the Warrior
(1996)

the companion piece to Return To Savage Beach
prequel almost,....if you like RTSB, you should see this. Although the order doesn't matter as it's not like the story lines are too awful important. Basically, it's just an excuse to see Shae Marks and Julie K. Smith dress in tight tops and look hot as they and their secret agents buddies(again with Julie Strain, although in this one she doesn a lot more than RTSB) fight against a wrestler whose a good guy in RTSB. Confused? Don't be. None of this matters. Again, the main male lead, the Brazillian guy is such a bad actor that it's great. So bad, gag, hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! Seriously awful dialog and delivery.

But it's got the goods.

Best part is the fake porn shoot where nobody gets naked and then the parking lot shoot-out where the shooters hide behind cars about 20 feet away and nothing seems to get hit.

Oh yeah!

Suspiria
(1977)

this is a classic?
longest 98 minutes of my life getting thru this. Totally expected to be blown away. Instead, tedium kicked in within the first 10 minutes. Maybe it's because I've seen many other movies that were better and more recent, maybe this is dated, don't know or care. Just thought this sucked. I've only seen one other Argento film and it wasn't too good either. Give me Bava or Fulci any day. This had a big kill scene at the beginning, and then lots of colorful sets and bad acting, a vague plot, and quite frankly, by the time it was over, I didn't care.

I'd actually purchased this and it was the biggest disappointment I'd ever had in buying a DVD.

Lifeboat
(1944)

one of the best Hitchcock movies ever!
this was one of those films where the premise made me groan. I pictured a tedious slightly cheese-ball dated experience. Boy was I wrong. This movie was so well-done, so well-written and directed that I didn't want it to end. One setting is all that exists and Hitch certainly knew how to stage this and make it work. Hitch is truly the master at 1 set movies, from Rope to Rear Window to this. Intense! I consider it one of his greatest films alongside such classics as Shadow Of A DOubt and the afore-mentioned Rope and the dark comedy The Trouble With Harry.

Of proof of Hitch's genius, look for his cameo. Classic!

This is a must-see!

Do or Die
(1991)

this is what made me a Sidaris fan
I confess to getting this on DVD due to my favorite model Pandora Peaks having been cast in a small role. It wasn't til I started watching it that I saw both Erik Estrada and Pat Morita in it and was surprised to see them both. This is a true roller-coaster of a ride, really all over the place, from the desert to Hawaii to the woods of Louisianna, it really covers a lot of geography from a small production for the video market. Casting buffed guys and sexy gals as secret agents, more or less acting without any support against villains right out of The A-Team or some other 80's show, this had tons of female flesh, explosions, and even helicopters chasing cars. Also, the funniest part is that every agent had time to make love to their counterpart and there were a lot of clothing changes for the women. Likewise, Pat Morita as the villain was hilarious, and his assassins some of the lamest assassins ever filmed.

But it works for me.

Curse of Pirate Death
(2006)

this movie rulz, hahahahahahaha
hahaha, this is akin to watching a newer version of Plan 9 From Outer Space.....or maybe not. Let's see what this has going for it, shall we? Starting off, it shows the 'pirate' creature within the first minute or so, which kills any and all suspense(or at least what little there would be), and all the kills seem to have this pounding pseudo-metal/industrial-ish music in the background. What that's about I have no idea....probably someone involved had a band or recording project and whamo.

But the biggest glaring problem with this: It's a pirate movie that takes place in the desert. No water is seen at all!....okay, maybe a stream goes by, lol. But other than that, let me ask why does a movie about lost treasure and the ghost of a pirate take place in the desert? No ship, no ocean...? I don't get it.

But damn, it's fun. Bad acting, awful continuity(goes from overcast to sunny sometime in reverse-shots in one scene between 2 characters more than once).

Add in a cameo by the hedgehog himself Ron Jeremy, lots of really fake blood and kills, and sexy Syn DeVil's big tits and we got ourselves a party

This movie rules.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
(1970)

fantastic!!!!
as far as I'm concerned, this is the 70's rock/Hollywood/satire to see! I'm a Meyer fan so maybe I'm biased but it's so different from other Meyer films. You can see the big studio gloss on this one, although filtered thru Meyer's eyes/techniques. Everythign about this flick is over the top and insane. It reeks off gaudiness and that's what makes it work. From the odd narrative that begins with showing an abreviated ending during the opening credits, to the various quick montage dits that Meyer always uses, to the insane musical numbers where 3 girls with only 1 guitar, 1 bass, and 1 drummer are performing with a song that features keyboards, horns, and lots of layers. I'm a musician, I notice these things,...think they even have one where the singer doesn't even have a microphone yet her voice is heard, lol. Classic stuff fo sho! But that's all just minor details. This sucker is one of the best movies ever, and can be viewed over and over and over. Lots of great hard-boiled dialog, sexual innuendos, and lots of boobage for a studio film. Although it's hard to believe this got an x rating when it came out....but then so did Evil Dead! Lots of classic Meyer actors here, Erica Gavins of Vixen fame, Charles Napier of bother Cherry, Harry, And Raquel and also Supervixens, even Haji in a cameo...plus lots of over-the-top hippy vibes and the decadence of Hollywood everywhere.

You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance! What a great line. Z-Man has to be one of the greatest Meyer characters ever.

Written by Roger Ebert! Would you believe it?!??? Brilliant!!!

L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies: Return to Savage Beach
(1998)

like Magnum PI meets VIP
I love Andy Sidaris films and this is one of my favorite. Why? Because it's ridiculous. None of the 'actors' can act, they're all looks. This is the world of sexy espionage where all the secret agents are smokin hot. Shae Marks and Julie K. SMith have some of the largest implanted boobs you'll see in a non-adult type movie. And ladies, don't think this is sexist either as Sidaris has you covered with muscular slick studs as the big-boobed women's counterparts.

Oh yes, this one has it all, folks.

Yeah, I know they hype Julie Strain as the star but most of the film she just sits around at their beach-front(?!??) HQ and reads lines with such lack of enthusiasm you can almost see the cue cards. But she's great compared to Paul Logan, the studly muscle-guy who obviously is cast because of his great acting ability....yeah, sure....I commend Sidaris for always having guys like this in his films because he's not neglecting any female viewers.

Did I mention Shae Marks and Julie K. Smith's massive mammaries? The scene at the end when they finally get to savage beach and are both in matching outfits, hubba hubba!!!! Likewise, the scene with Shae in a business suit early on is quite sexy, too. I've heard she got her implants removed- what a shame.

Andy Sidaris passed away this year. He got his start doing NFL football as well as the Olympics. His producer was his wife. His dvds were packed with all kinds of great extras and he came across as just a great guy who enjoyed making action-packed movies filled with attractive casts, and filmed in exotic locations.

RIP, Andy

Vampire Sisters
(2004)

this is pretty bad, A for effort, D for results(Double D for Syn DeVil)
this is pretty medicre film-making, even at the low-budget level. Sure the concept of some vampire babes using the net to trick guys into coming to their house to get some action only to feed on their blood is a cool idea. But the slow uninspired way that this happens is really not very exciting. I'm a fan of hot chicks and especially big tits so it was nice to see Syn DeVil as one of the vamps, but even her inclusion doesn't really make a difference.

The story is boring, basically just the same thing over and over and over til the cops come. Sure, the scary thing/brother in the shed is supposed to be mysterious or something but it wasn't. Likewise, why don't any of the victims just leave instead of creeping around the house looking for somewhere to hide.

Plot holes big enough to fit a small city.

Up!
(1976)

way way way overlooked Meyer film
when people talk Meyer films, I never hear Up! mentioned at all and I don't know why. I am constantly perplexed that Supervixens gets much acclaim yet nobody mentions Up!

Maybe it's just me.

This is the 11th Meyer film I saw and I really enjoyed it. A lot. Again, maybe it's just the fact that Raven is so ravishing that draws me in. She is indeed one of the top Meyer girls, and tis a shame she wasn't cast in any others. She's gorgeous, has such a cool face, and of course, her bustline is amazing.

I guess this one was made so much later in his career that it went under the radar. It came out in '76 and by then people were already experiencing more intense cinema like Star Wars and Jaw, the 'blockbuster' as it were....perhaps Russ was past his prime by then. Maybe it was too self-referential, too cartoon-ish, too zany, too sleazy, maybe it was bar rape scene, who knows.....whatever the reason, it's a shame.

Love the rednecks and hillbillies in Meyer films- they don't seen Hollywood. And since I suffer from the same malady as Meyer did- Bosomania- I'll never argue with his casting, especially with Raven, who stands up there with Tura, Erica Gavin, Ann Marie, and others as top Meyer gals.

Hope to attend a Meyer film fest someday to see this on the big screen.

Pandora Peaks
(2002)

shame this wasn't better integrated as a feature film. This is a documentary if anything
for the Meyer purist, this is a double-edged sword. All the classic elements are there- the fast cuts, the great camera angles, the sharp focus, and of course the HUGE BOOBS! But on the down-side, there's no story, no characters, none of the exploitation/sleaze elements, or heavy-handed dialog, and quite frankly no plot line really at all. It's merely a collage of Meyer-stuff, like he threw a bunch of left-over stuff in a blender and out this came. Shame too as I'd have loved to have seen what he could have done with Pandora as a real character in a real story in a real film. it would have been a true swan-song. I'm guessing it was him being too old and lacking of resources, along with his Alzeimer's perhaps that kept him from fully realizing this. Hell, there's not really much of Pandora in this, which is odd considering her name is the title of the film. I think Russ must've really lost it towards the end(as it appears from reading the very excellent and informative Meyer book bio).

it's nice to watch but i wish it was more an actual movie. Pandora is indeed one of the most stunning women in the world(long since retired and sadly reduced breast-wise) and she was at her peak(sic) about the time Russ shot her. Shame they didn't take it further as perhaps then Russ would've gone out with a BANG! instead of a fizzle.

I own it nonetheless and any true Meyer fanatic should. Great shots as usual, and Pandora will make your heart pound.

Supervixens
(1975)

runs a little too long
my least favorite of all the Meyer films, and although I do like Napier, Supervixens and also Cherry, Harry, And Raquel are the 2 Meyer films I've seen that I really don't like much. And granted, a bad Meyer film still has a lot going for it. First off, the great cinematography and the boobs,.....however, too often there's a little too much of a cartoon-like vibe that doesn't mix well with the nasty violence. The bath-tub kill scene was a bit out of touch with the rest of the film. Some of the dialog/acting is just awful, too and the main male lead didn't work for me. I'd a rather Napier played him since Napier's role was mainly at the beginning and then the end as the crazed cop. The reason why Faster Pussycat remains Meyer's best-known film is because the females are the main characters. In Supervixens, they're almost an afterthought.

A lot of the music is goofy, too, a common thing in Meyer films that often give it a cheap dated feel in 2007. But to contradict myself, in a lot of his films, the music is dated in a way that totally works.

Rent Faster Pussycat, Vixen, Up!, Mudhoney, or BVD instead!!!!!
