Sangue Toureiro
(1958)

The First Full Color Portuguese Movie,
If you are Portuguese you love Fado and Bullfights. Then this movie is for you. It suffices that one of the stars is the great Amalia Rodrigues, the greatest fado singer of all times. (Whom I had the privilege of meeting.) Playing opposite Amalia is Diamantino Viseu, one of the two great bullfighters of the time. (The other one being Manuel dos Santos who can be seen in the movie Sol e Toiros.) This is another of the movies that have been mentioned as telling the story of Amalia as a woman that has to give up her love. Although it is true that Amalia had a much more fulfilling professional life than a personal life, this movie is more a story of unrequited love between a fadista and a toureiro. The movie is worth watching if for no other reason than to watch Amalia singing some of her best numbers and watching Diamantino Viseu fighting a few bulls. That is not to say that the plot is not worth watching in and of itself. If you ever get a chance to what this classic don't pass it up.

Sol e Toiros
(1949)

If you are Portuguese this movie has it all for you.
If you are Portuguese this movie has it all for you. Fado, Touradas, (Bullfights), romance, intrigue and comedy. The leading role is played by none other than the best bullfighter of his time, Manuel do Santos. The scenes in the bull ring are of Manuel dos Santos himself. The plot is an excellent one that revolves around the world of "Touros e Fado". The quintessential soul of the Portuguese. The "piece de resistance" is a cameo appearance by Amalia Rodrigues, the diva of fado that introduced the song of Portugal to the world. The performance by the entire cast was excellent but the one that really stands out is Vasco Santana. His part was practically made for his style of comedy. You will find yourself laughing, crying and applauding.

This movie will have you enthralled from the very beginning. It is indeed a must see.

O Costa do Castelo
(1943)

Worth it just to see Antonio Silva
This is a most entertaining movie that is made better by the outstanding performance of Antonio Silva. For Portuguese speakers living outside of Portugal this is a great example of how the language of Camoes should be spoken. The comedic plot is above average and the performance delivered by the entire cast is also above average. It is the machinations that are dreamed up by Silva's character that really puts it over the top. It is about a young nobleman that falls in love with a simple young lady in 1940's Lisbon and in order to get close to her he passes himself off as a simple chauffeur for a wealthy count. When his "stuck up" aunt finds out about it she would have nothing of it. Enter Silva's character to give us a happy ending. This is Antonio Silva at his best.
