The Sounds
(2020)

Starts great and then thud.
There are some good ideas and twists, but poorly put together and with not very good dialogue. You can see the top cast strugling with all the meaningful glances out to sea and at each other. It's basically a mess, not helped by too many clumsy flashbacks at odd times that just don't fit the action. For me, it's the kiss of death if I start to fast-forward to escape yet another scene of emoting.

It runs out of steam about 1/3 of the way through. I stuck through to the end hoping for some salvation, but it got worse, and the end... well, was there an end?

Most kiwi shows I've seen have been really top-notch and I was expecting better, but not this time.

Midnight Mass
(2021)

Proves a scary show can be boring
Good acting, sets and effects, but overall just plain boring. Drags horribly. At least a full quarter of the show should've been cut. Painfully long book scenes that make their point over and over and over. It felt like the screenwriters couldn't figure which lines to keep, so they kept them all.

The multiple story lines just didn't mesh, the overall effect was disjointed.

Too obvious too early in the show, main characters come and go, night scenes that are so dark for so long that you lose interest (and reach for the fast-forward button). If you're going to mashup classic horror films, keep it simple.

The Expanse
(2015)

Downhill after season 3
What happened? Once the best scifi show I've ever seen but it's been steadily downhill starting with season 4. The first three seasons were outstanding, leaving the disappointment of the following three seasons all the more bitter. The current season (6) drags interminably and each of the too-numerous plot lines lack the dialogue or just plain "stuff" to save the actors from looking talentless. Some great special effects but oddly these are not capitalized on. There are some high points but these are drowned out by the endless long shots of space cruisers zipping left and right across the screen. I've actually fast forwarded through some of the dialogue scenes (Marco, I'm looking at you), something I would've considered inconceivable when this show was new. Where's the wonder? Mystery? Imagination? This show has sadly devolved into just another space opera.

UnREAL
(2015)

Incredible
This show is incredible. The writing, acting, direction, all excellent. And how timely, with the fascination of all things "real", which is to say, of course, not close to real at all. The manipulation of the lead characters is stunning in it's depravity. As a friend who's watched it said, "this is on Lifetime?" I'm no fan of reality TV and this skewers it to the wall, warts and all. I have a suspicion that there's a good bit of truth behind this show, from the story lines, the "girls" and the "bachelor" and the crew. It's equally entertaining and frightening. Saw all four currently out in sequence, but each one is great. Sometimes brutal, the well-acted psychosis of the main characters is worth the watch.
