Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Broken Circle
(2023)
Episode 1, Season 2

Great start!
Anson Mount's relaxed style as Captain Pike is, in real life a good trait and his sense of humour is reminiscent of JTK. Big themes and a big budget suggests we're in for a great ride. I hope the episodes can stand alone as the original Star Trek's did and the series does not become an interpersonal soap opera as many other works have done in recent years, This episode is about first contact with a pre-warp warring civilisation who accidentally get hold of Starfleet technology which could mean the end for them. How does Pike stop the new civilisation from destroying itself? Watch and see! Enjoy!

Alien Conquest
(2021)

Not again!
Three WOTW productions in as many years. Three huge disappointments. This one is just as dire as the others. Poor acting, use of inane and unnecessary dialogue to fill up runtime, plot holes (ship travelling from Mars to Earth in 15 minutes anyone?). I give it some credit for the cgi, but that's all. It's just as well H. G. Wells isn't around to see this.

Shadows of Fear: The Party's Over
(1973)
Episode 11, Season 1

Disappointing.
John Parker wants out of his marriage so he can be with his lover, but of course he needs his wife's money. Learning that his wife has a serious heart condition, he sets up various "scares" to frighten her in the hope of hastening her demise. In keeping with the theme of the series, things don't turn out as expected. Unfortunately the plot didn't make sense to me and felt like it had been written in five minutes on the back of a cigarette packet. The acting was somewhat hammy and the finale - well just corny. One wonders what went wrong with the series production in this last episode, which has a much shorter run time than preceding episodes. Ran out of money?

I'll Follow You Down
(2013)

No huge special effects - so what?
Ok, this time travel movie may be too slow for some and it doesn't rely on cgi, robots, space travel, etc. etc. However, it kept my attention throughout and I never saw the shock ending coming. You do get to see a little of 1946, but that is not what the story is about. It's about consequences, pain and ultimate resolution. I liked it.

The Twilight Zone: You Might Also Like
(2020)
Episode 10, Season 2

Art House Short
For your consideration, a surreal experience, comic characters, a reference to a classic episode. Strangely disjointed and populated with unlikeable individuals. A journey into dystopia, but not . . The Twilight Zone.

Tall Men
(2016)

A paranoid schizophrenic's spiral into oblivion.
This is a low budget unconventional movie with an atmosphere of the creepy, the bizarre and the disturbing. I am surprised at the bad reviews as it certainly isn't perfect, but it makes a nice change from the endless rollout of cookie cutter samey samey horror movie fare. I liked it and savoured observing the predictable decline of the principal character, his delusions masking the true horror of what was really happening. A mild twist at the end perhaps slightly tongue in cheek. Definitely not for everyone, but comfortably occupies its niche.

Vivarium
(2019)

Creepy
I was intrigued by the bad reviews, but they allowed me to go into it with my eyes open. The unsettling atmosphere sets in right from the start and does not let up throughout the movie. If you have a penchant for the creepy then you may enjoy Vivarium, but it felt like this story could have been condensed into an episode of Black Mirror and would have worked better for it. Scariest moment - when the child reveals his true nature. Overall I feel the movie could be an analogy for the pointlessness and futility of the human existence. P.S. I don't think I will ever like the colour green in home decor after watching Vivarium.

Angel of Mine
(2019)

Roller Coaster ride!
As others say, this is a slow burner, but stick with it. Noomi Rapace is perfect for the role as the tortured mother close to losing it completely. Very tense. Much better than I expected.

The War of the Worlds
(2019)

Bore of the Worlds
Dull, dreary, big disappointment. I would have preferred less of the silly humans and more of the martians to be honest. I was expecting something more true to the original H. G. Wells novel. Alas this is no more than a downbeat, depressing and slow moving piece, soon to be forgotten.

Public Eye
(1965)

Clever plots and fine acting
I remember my parents watching this series when I was a kid. I didn't take to it at all back then, probably due to the downbeat atmosphere and often grubby dealings on show. However, having watched a couple of episodes on the UK channel Talking Pictures, I am impressed by the acting talents of Alfred Burke and the clever and sometimes complicated plots. Probably not to the taste of the younger viewer, but great to watch as each story unfolds and also to see some of the character actors who feature in each episode. Usually included are one or two location shots of 1970s England, which is a bonus.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
(2018)

What are people expecting?
The first Jurassic Park movie was such a classic, it is always going to be difficult for sequels to live up to it. However, as a stand alone movie, Fallen Kingdom is a fine action movie. Yes there are flaws, but that's the case with most movies. Plenty of action and impressive cgi makes for a great watch in hi-def on a big screen. Seven out of ten.

Destination Gobi
(1953)

Entertaining and Balanced Movie
(Spoilers) I wholly disagree with the couple of reviews above. The movie portrayed the Mongols as civilised, intelligent, insightful and ultimately outsmarting all the others portrayed, by securing the safety of the US forces. They spoke their own language amongst themselves and were only shown using monosyllabic English when communicating with the Americans. Exactly what you would expect from people whose knowledge of English was very limited. OK, this not the best movie ever made, but shot in Technicolor and mostly on location, it is worth a view for that alone. As for being "triumphalist", that is just not the case. How does being saved by the Mongols come across as triumphalist? The Japanese were, if anything, portrayed as far more humane then their actual behaviour in WW2. As for the plot, it was based on true events. Any attempt to jazz it up for entertainment's sake would have been wrong.

After Earth
(2013)

Why so much hate?
Maybe it is because Will Smith used his massive influence in Hollywood to get his kid into a big budget movie and people resent the kid getting a free boost into the big time? Maybe it's because it is simply that the principal player is a kid?

Jaden Smith's acting was no worse than Arnie's or Seagal's in numerous movies.

I liked the story concept, the CGI, the scenery etc. so I give it a seven.

If anything, the ending was a little sudden leaving me feeling somewhat short changed.

Olympus Has Fallen
(2013)

This could have been good with a bit more thought
SPOILERS. - OK, how does a hostile C130 get right over DC before being intercepted? Why were the intercepting fighter jets lined up exactly where the C130s Gatling guns were pointed? Why would the most technologically advanced nation on Earth design a missile abort system which would cause the missiles to detonate their nuclear warheads whilst still in the silos? Why did the president swear never to reveal the Cerberus code and then appear to have just handed it over? Etc. etc. etc.

Come on guys. A bit more time spent on the plot line and you would have had a great movie. As it stands, I can't bring myself to give it more than a four out of ten.

Total Recall
(2012)

Total Mishmash.
A big budget CGI fest, humourless thrash through futuristic megascapes with bullets flying everywhere. The original Arnie version may be looking very dated nowadays, but it is way more enjoyable.

Tomfoolery
(1970)

I would love to see it again!
Almost nobody remembers this programme but I thought it was great as a kid. The characters I remember most are the Fastidious Fish who walked around using stilts held outside his fishbowl (complete with spat shoes on the end) and the Scoobious Snake who sported a straw hat and a cane. I was already familiar with the poems of Edward Lear such as the Owl & the Pussycat, the Pobble Without Any Toes etc. etc. so it was good to see them set to cartoon sketches.

At least there are a few people who remember. Now I need to find something for the cartoon "Arthur the King of Camelot" which was in some ways similar and which nobody seems to remember either! "Arthur, the King of Camelot, He's a Ring A Ding A Ding of a King"

Chance in a Million
(1984)

A gem
"Chance in a Million" was a gem and it is sad that it has never been repeated.Tom Chance (Simon Callow) accepted the twists fate threw at him with unflinching cheerfulness and it was a pleasure trying to anticipate what could go wrong next.

His long suffering fiancé Alison (Brenda Blethyn) always meekly hoped for the best, enduring the most ludicrous of mishaps.

I often wondered if it wasn't rerun because its principal actors went on to greater things and having joined the ranks of "luvvies" they didn't want reminders of where they started from.

If true, this would be a shame because it was an excellent series.
