The Castaways
(2023)

Not quite the plane crash others are saying. But its not a first class flight either.
The scathing reviews of this show are a bit over-the-top I must say. It's not that bad, in fact, I would even go as far as to say its good. Not brilliant by any stretch, but at less than 5 hours in total, it's decent enough to waste away an evening or two with some mindless escapism. Now I haven't read the book, nor was I aware of it's existence until now, so this review is based on being standalone and will not be compared to the literature.

The story interchanges between "then", which is about Lori, who is stranded on an uninhabited island following a plane crash. And "now", which follows her sister Erin, a journalist who's obsession with finding Lori has understandably taken over her life. Months have passed since the plane fell from the sky and marooned a handful of survivors on the island and over the course of the story we learn that there are several survivors who have a good reason to never be found. Things go missing, mystery traitors sabotage progress, and despite apparently being a team, the isolated group start to turn on each other until the now and then catch up with each other as we enter the climax of the story. All along the way, Erins investigation drives the plot and reveals the secrets of the past.

There's nothing here that is groundbreaking, the dialogue can be iffy but the actors mostly play their parts well and the mystery elements keep you guessing throughout. The main downside for me was the little things that take the realism away. They settle in to life on a desert island remarkably easily, with little struggle and are mostly perfectly presented throughout. No sunburn or tanning to be seen, never do we see them struggle for food or water and the rate they seem to learn how to twine, thatch and build from the islands limited resources is quite remarkable.

That all being said, the story and mystery is entertaining enough to make this worth a watch, even if you do have to suspend your disbelief sometimes and ignore the odd plot hole. As long as you don't go in expecting Emmy worthy television and are prepared for some mindless entertainment, then you won't be disappointed.

6/10.

Halloween Ends
(2022)

More like when will this END??
Honestly couldn't wait for this to be over. Interesting concept to begin with but they took too much focus away from Michael for the final showdown. An extremely poor attempt at the impossible task of passing the torch from Michael. The film doesn't feel like it's about him and by the time he did rear his ugly head I was past caring.

It doesn't feel like a Halloween movie until maybe at the very end. Where, to be fair, we get arguably the (second) best ever Laurie v Michael showdown we've ever seen in the franchise and the only reason I haven't given it a lower score.

The acting was...fine...for a slasher and the story felt desperate throughout but it was shot as well as expected. Just wasn't engaging like I'd expect a Halloween movie to be. Especially the "END".

Home Sweet Home Alone
(2021)

Not as bad as you might assume. Worth a watch
The "remake".

Not as bad as expected and definitely worth a watch. Its quite funny in parts with plenty of throw backs to the original.

The new Kevin (called Max in this) is a bit rubbish, and for some reason British, but all round its good fun and kids will love it. Mine said it was the best one yet!! (Obviously theyre wrong though). As long as you don't keep comparing it to the first one and judge it on its own merits then you should enjoy it, its not as bad as the reviews are saying.

PAW Patrol: The Movie
(2021)

Not just a feature length episode. Surprisingly good.
Ignoring the fact this is Paw Patrol, this pawsome movie stands mighty on its own merits and is a fun, cool, exciting adventure from start to finish. This isn't just 86 minutes of what you get on TV. This is all new, revamped Paw Patrol which has been redrawn in a new style and modernised for its cinema audience. And ifs fantastic.

The story starts off in the familiar Adventure Bay and we are re-introduced to the characters with a typical rescue from Rider and his team of mighty pups. Then the narrative whisks us off to Adventure City where Mayor Humdinger is up to his naughty tricks once more and its up to the Paw Patrol to save the day again.

Its exciting from start to finish and the story is surprisingly good considering its source material. Chase takes centre stage with strong character development that delves in to his origin story and tells you how he became part of Riders rescue team of puppies. The only downside really that I can think of is that we didn't see enough of some of the other pups. It was too focused on Chase who I think is the dullest of the crew but it can be argued this was the point of his story. Rubble brings some comic relief from time to time but nowhere near enough and the likes of Rocky and Zuma are nothing more than background extras. Without giving anything anyway the squad also meet a new pup who serves as a guide to Adventure City and gets second billing after Chase.

The graphics and direction is superb and nothing less than what you would expect from a summer blockbuster animation movie. All of the team get brand spanking new costumes and vehicles and are showcased in the action brilliantly. My 4 year old little girl who is a big fan of the franchise already, loved every moment of it - laughing and clapping throughout and shrieked with glee on more than a few occasions. It even managed to pull on her heart strings and there was a moment i swear I heard a sniffle. By the end she was dancing on the floor in front of us and wanted to stay and watch it again when the credits rolled up.

This movie is an absolute blast and the Paw Patrol certainly are on a roll with this one.

Pawn Stars
(2009)

One of the better reality shows
Thoroughly entertaining reality show.

Its well put together with a likeable cast but it kinda has to be your thing. If you like old memorabillia and really cool pieces of historical items (such as ancient jewellery, civil war weapons, 500 year old books, ring walk outfit worn by Macho Man Randy Savage, Triple Crown Trophys etc etc) and easy to watch TV then this is for you.

Yeah okay its obviously set up in parts but its informative and explains a lot about what each item is and its history. Its also exciting to find out how much items are worth and can be funny when customers think its a get rich item but they end up selling for £300 bucks. On the flip side though there is plenty of big ticket items with offers of 30-40k not unusual. There is also items which although are really cool, just don't make business sense to buy from the customer which finishes off a nice variety of outcomes. Throughout each item there is also on screen graphics which give further facts and interesting information.

I think the criticism from tourists who have down rated this show is unfair. These blokes obviously make *a lot* of money and how someone can expect to rock up randomly to the store and just get to shop around amongst the staff is beyond me. Complaints of "they are never there, its just a shop with other staff" when they're not should have no reflection on the rating on this site thats no what this is for. This is IMDB not trip advisor. Rick and his team film and leave and then its ran as a business by someone else. I also believe that the sellers are genuine and not just actors pretending to sell museum pieces as suggested by other users. No way would a museum allow their treasures to be handled in such way. They even fire canons at one point.

All in all thoroughly enjoyable if you need something easy to watch and pass some time.

Bluey
(2018)

An excellent pre-school cartoon the whole family can enjoy
I'm the kind of parent that whacks the tele on when I need to get something done in the house for an hour and need to keep the kids occupied. I generally have little interest in watching myself and rarely manage to learn the character names outside of the main "star".

'Bluey' though, is something special, and along with her fellow canine family of sister, Bingo, and parents Bandit & Chili, she succeeds where few before it have in keeping my attention and actually getting as far as to that I *want* to watch it with them. Not only that but I now find myself asking my kids to pause it if I need to nip out the room. It's that good.

Adorable and full of charm, each episode centres around scenarios that will be familiar to all families and no matter if you're the toddler it's *technically* on for, their older sibling, or indeed parent, you will relate to everything that is going on. Cuteness and relatability aside, it's full of jokes and will keep you entertained throughout. The animation style is beautiful too and whilst not necessarily unique, feels fresh and pleasing on the eye.

An instant classic and hopefully a huge success. I would love to see it oust Peppa Peg and Paw Patrol as being the most shown kids show on TV. It certainly has in this household. My only gripe is that there aren't enough episodes.

Well done Australia

Halloween
(2018)

He'll be back.
So they've turned Laurie in to Sarah Conner and unmasked Michael in the very beginning. Myers rampages like he's a spooky special of The Terminator franchise and the opposite of the stalker killer we're familiar with. Although it still looks familiar as the Halloween with its cinematography, it doesn't feel like it. Bloody as hell with a scary atmosphere but really it's an action movie.
