Aquaman
(2018)

A children fairytale with Hollywood effects
Clearly WB hasn't done a great job planing DCEU's movies and Marvel is better on the big picture, laying out the whole plan for the grand world view. I think maybe this is why lots of people think Aquaman is the best DCEU moive. Personally, I don't think Aquaman is a great movie, definitely far from the best, except the VFX.

If you compare Aquaman with BVS or Watchmen, you'll find that this story is like a children's fairytale. It has no reflection on our reality. It just tells a hero becomes the hero, defeats the villain and finds the love one. It has no "soul".

Of course the VFX is epic. But we already have an Avatar. What we need now is a great story, not over-productions.

Avengers: Infinity War
(2018)

An epic world view with epic battles, a deep villain with deep reflections
I always love popcorn movies with deep reflections on real problems. And Avengers: Infinity War is, IMO, not THE best, but one of the best Marvel movies ever made. If you want to know, I think Captain American: Winter Soldier is the best in MCU.

Let's take away the grand world and fancy effects, this is a movie about a very serious social problem: booming population and limited resources. How do we choose to solve this problem does not make us a villain. It just makes us humans. It also brings the question that does ends justify the means. If you really think about it, this movie has more to offer.

Infinity War builds an epic world. It introduces us to the entire Marvel Universe. It also builds an epic "Villain". Thanos, after seeing him in previous easter eggs, I worried he was going to be a classic villain with no humanity. But he's not. In Infinity War, Thanos is a human. He has his background, he has his value. The fact that he only kills to bring balance to the Universe after his world was destroyed indicates that he has human feelings and he wants to solve the unsolvable problem. Most importantly, he has the terribly strong will to act on it. This makes him one of the most well built "Villain" in history.

Music, scenes, battles are pretty well designed in this movie. And the shocking ending really gives us huge anticipations for the sequel.

Venom
(2018)

Cool characters, cool scenes, lame story
Sometimes I feel sick hearing comments like "Oh this is a popcorn movie with no story, but who cares, we are after the effects". But this is sadly the truth right now. People don't care about stories any more. Popcorn movies and series must have a great story too!

Venom is a super cool character. I love him. Seeing him fighting, and even just hearing the voice is really fun. This movie is supposed to be a cool movie, and it indeed is very cool. But the weak plot really brings it two levels down.

If you are only after the coolness and effects, it's not gonna be a disappointment. BTW, awesome closing theme song.

Captain Marvel
(2019)

Mediocre Production in MCU
First of all, as the final movie before the Avengers: Endgame, it makes so many connections to link all the stories of different heroes and different timelines. And if you are a true Marvel fan, you should definitely go and watch it. The first easter egg brings so much anticipation for the Endgame.

However, as the first Captain Marvel movie, it did not do a good job building this character. After seeing it, I can only tell that she is a badass female with a strong spirit and a sense of humor. Other than that, I know nothing about her personally. This is also true for other supporting characters.

The visual effects are indeed very good. But it's not epic, comparing to Alita, even Aquaman.

As a popcorn movie, it's not a waste of money. I always love to see movies with strong female characters. But Captain Marvel is just not that good.

Westworld
(2016)

This rating and review is for season one
If I can only use one sentence to describe WW season one: this is one of THE best story I've ever seen. Without any biases, almost everything about WW is perfect, the storyline, the acting, the BGM, the editing, the space for different interpretations, etc. The way they are telling the story is quite confusing, that's true. But I don't think it's a bad thing. One of WW's ultimate goal is to set people thinking about the very existence of ourselves. And breaking down the timelines could help, for sometimes we, in reality, are lost in time and the only way for us to figure that out is to confront ourselves.

WW obviously has many shining aspects. The most crafted and brilliant one IMO is the reference. All those Shakespeare quotes, the Creation of Adam, and a bunch of other things, are really encouraging people to ask some fundamental questions like what is mind, what is existence, what's the difference between me and a host and so on.

The acting is also great. Evan Rachel Wood is absolutely brilliant in WW. Her micro expressions are very convincing. And she killed it in the scene where she was supposed to turn down her emotion but still trying to cry. The cast are very strong. In general, they did a very good job.

And for those who are into mind-blowing storylines, WW will definitely be a wonderful journey to experience. If you are somewhat slow on understanding the plot, that's fine. It happens to most of us. Google some explanations and you will be even more surprised by this magnificent work. However, I'm only talking about season one.

Alita: Battle Angel
(2019)

Stunning and touching movie with trivial flaws
In general, I really like this movie. I even consider it as one of the few movies that actually touched my heart.

Many think the plot is bad, which I don't think is very accurate. I am currently reading the manga. The story is GREAT! Only they didn't take full advantage of this great story to build the characters, except Alita herself. The ultimate goal of story telling is building characters. And this movie brilliantly shaped Alita, and Alita only. Other supporting characters seem to have fewer background stories, which makes them less vivid. Like Grewishka (aka Makaku in the original manga), Hugo and his brother, they all have very intriguing life stories, but the movie did not tell us. Also, there are many other fascinating characters in the manga did not even appear in the movie, such as Jasugun the motorball champion, Alita's motorball team manager Ed and many others.

Also, the plot is jumping around a lot. If you read the manga, you'll notice the exact same style. But I still think they could've done better in the transition between scenes. After all this is a movie, not comics.

Besides this, I think "Alita: Battle Angel" is perfect. The CGI face is absolutely the peak of our tech. And the emotion brought by this tiny body was so exploding and touching. I, as a man, was moved by this empowered female character. She showed us how to find our true selves and how to stay pristine in the ugly world.

And to James, Robert, Rosa and everyone who were a part of this project, GREAT JOB GUYS!! PLEASE MAKE A SEQUEL ASAP!!
