Bramayugam
(2024)

Tumbbad? The Lighthouse? Bramayugam!
"This is Bramayugam, the age of madness! A worsened era of the most degenerate age, the Kaliyugam! God's exodus marks the beginning of Bramayugam. No matter how loudly you summon Him, He won't hear you!"

In the folklore of the 17th century, Thevan, a singer hailing from Paanan, finds himself adrift after narrowly escaping a slave market. His journey takes an unforeseen twist when he chance upon a mysterious path while evading a yakshi that abruptly crosses their way in the jungle. This enigmatic path leads him to 'The Mana,' the mansion of Kodumon Potti."

This cinematic masterpiece, a technically brilliant film, brings to mind; Satyajit Ray's The Music Room and Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, where a gripping game of chess unfolds between the knight and Death, symbolizing profound existential struggle. However, in Bramyugam, Thevan and Kodumon Potti engage in a game of Pakida, where 'Time' itself becomes the wager. The film also jogs memory of Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan, yet it predominantly resonates with Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse and another Indian cinematic gem based on mythical folklore, Tumbbad.

Although Bramayugam may evoke thoughts of these films, it is undeniably original and transcends comparison. It's striking cinematography, haunting score, artwork, brilliant acting and direction; coalesce to create an eerie atmosphere within the dilapidated mansion, shrouded in intricate webs. Furthermore, it resonates deeply with pluviophile, capturing their hearts' desires in a unique and compelling manner.

Kamli
(2022)

Must Watch
Kamli will transcend Pakistani cinema to new heights and will open the door for other filmmakers to work on serious subjects.

Saba Qamar is phenomenal at what she does, and in this film potraying the character of Hina - a women, whose husband Saqlain hasn't returned since last eight years, while she is roaming the valley of Soon looking for lover to quinch her thirst - audience will witness her seductive erotic gaze and the way she moves her body 'overflowed with powerful emotion.'

Sania Saeed as Sakina, the pious religious women but blind and still teaches Holy Quran to Children is brilliant in her performance. Nimra Bucha as Zeenat is an artist fighting her own inner demons and Omair Rana adds a flavor as her husband.

Son of Irfan Khoosat, Sarmad Sultan Khoosat.(director of Manto and Zindagi Tamasha) has proven once again that he is the artisitic face of cinema and only he can pursue independent craft.

Great direction, great performances, mesmerizing landscapes, amazing cinematography, impeccable dialogues, good storyline, and soundtrack creating soothing atmosphere.

Tikhie stranitsy
(1994)

Sin and Guilt
A poor, desolated, isolated man wandering the streets after witnessing the bloody murder, looking for meaning of his existence, life, and to search if God really exists consisting tha bits of anti-hero of Dostoevsky 's Crime and Punishment descending into Dante's Inferno.

Minimum dialogues with good visuals.

Ordet
(1955)

Enlightening
From the director of Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) comes another masterpiece Ordet (1955). Carl Theodor Dreyer was known for his religious themes and involvement of fate in the common lives. Ordet is one of those films.

Film revolves around Borgen family. Morten, a widower pious man lives with his 3 sons. Mikkel the eldest of all is faithless - he doesn't have faith in faith itself - is married to pious woman Inger (pregnant at the time) already with two kids Karen and Maren. Johannes the second of Morten has gone insane due to reading too much philosophy especially of Soren Kierkegaard, and believes that he is Jesus Christ. The third one Anders is in love with Anne, daughter of Pete the tailor. Peter denies her daughters hand to Anders until the family joins his sect. What transpires throughout the film is an example of miracle, and helps and individual to understand faith.

Johannes: None of you has thought of asking God to return Inger to you.

Morten: Johannes, now you mock God.

Johannes: it is you who mock God with your half-heartedness.

Mula sa kung ano ang noon
(2014)

Once in a Lifetime
5 hour 38 mins experimental film directed by Lav diaz is gripping and mesmerizing. In Philippines during 1972, mysterious things are happening in a remote region. Wails are heard from the forest, cows are hacked to death, a man is found bleeding to death and houses are burned.

Lav Diaz is brilliant as director and as well as cinematographer, he takes his time with his settings, which might exhaust the common audience, the camera capturing beautiful natural scenes, landscape, upon which a small figure will be strolling from distance untill he exists in a close up shot.

A great movie with hauntingly trauamtic story-line.

Mughal-E-Azam
(1960)

Yaadgaar
This film always left a person in awe. The storyline, dialogues, songs, music, sound effects, acting, dance, lyrics, set-decoration, and above all direction by K. Asif, is everything that makes this movie perfect in every way. Mughal E Azam is great example of interfaith harmony and diversity neglecting the bigotry among religion, especially the scene where Enperor Akbar is getting ready for battle with his son and the two people of different religion do their duties: Muslim armbands him Imam Zamin and the Hindu Priest puts Tilak.

The film took 16 years from conception to completion because of K. Asif's abiding search for perfection. Mughal e Azam, the Masterpiece of Hindi Cinema for a reason.

Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai
(1960)

Chance for Everyone
When Radhu Karamkar, then cinematographer, expressed his desire to direct a film, Raj Kapoor made him direct Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai(1960), later to be considered as magnum opus of his career.

Raj Kapoor, Padmini, Pran and Lalita Pawar starrer is dacoit drama in which Raju saves the injured dacoit Sardar and feeds him. Later he is abducted by Sardar's fellowman. Sardar's daughter Kammo falls in love with Raju, and convinces him that the dacoits are actually socialist in order to keep him, contrary Raka(Pran) is in love with Kammo. The truth is exposed on the wedding, where the dacoits killed a newly wed couple and stole everything.

The film has amazing lyrics by Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri and Music by Shanker-Jaikishen, which turned in beautiful melodies, romantic and moral songs. Starting with, Mera Naam Raju Gharana Anaam; Kya Howa Ye Mujhy Kya Howa Kya Pata Janey Kyun Machal Raha Hai Aaj Dil Mera; Honton Pe Sachaye Rehti Hai; Ho Mene Pyar, Oye Kya Jurm Kiya; Hai Aag Hamare Seene Main; O Basanti Pawan Pagal, and ending to Aa Ab Laut Chalen, sung by legendary playback singers Lata, Mukesh, Geeta, Manna Dey, Asha and Mahedra Kapoor.

Story by Arjun Dev Rashk, the movie amalgamates Gandhian values of truth and sacrifice.

Nomadland
(2020)

Dedicated to the ones who had to Depart.
What a beautiful movie with exceptional direction and performances. Great acting. Amazing soundtrack with soothing composition. And the stories of different characters is simply brilliant.

El Topo
(1970)

Unforgettable
Unlike The Holy Mountain, El Topo didnt impressed me that much but the message is strong and powerful. In this so called beautiful world, people who are abnormal, insane, anathema and disgrace to world must die. They should not contaminate this world with their ugly abnormality.

Two
(1965)

Class Apart
I remember reading Mark Twain's The Prince and The Pauper, in which rich and poor swipe their places. Contrary Satyajit Ray has depicted reality, which provides to acknowledge that in comparison of rich and poor, rich always win by force, especially when the rich isnt capable of doing what poor can: that gun shot speaks it.

Pyaasa
(1957)

Much ahead of its time
Today is the tenth time i am watching this masterpiece. A movie much ahead of its time, depicts the suffering of individual who are not hypocrites, especially poets, and true face of cruel society. Sahir Ludhianvi poetry and the voice of Hemant Kumar and Rafique pierces the soul. Very heart-breaking and depressing but honest depiction. Every poetry and song, i have memorized by heart. Depressive.

Rashômon
(1950)

Kurosawa The Genius
Rashomon is reflection of life and life dosent have a clear meaning. Only Kurosawa can make a movie like this, with impulse of lies, which is an essential element of human traits. He is genius at storytelling with existential crisis and nihilistic approach. Watching his movie is like reading Dostoevsky.

Kothanodi
(2015)

Folklore Masterpiece
Last movie (Kwaidan) that i watched on the subject of folktales was based on Japanese lores, which was directed by Masaki Kobayashi, director of The Human Condition(trilogy) and Harakiri. And now it was Kothanodi, directed by Bhaskar Hazarika who directed another unconventional masterpiece Aamis. Kothanodi is well crafted, directed, acted, with haunting BGM and haunting atmosphere with unorthodox stories . Looking forward to watch more movies from this director.

Le salaire de la peur
(1953)

Epitome.
One of the finest picture , much ahead of its time, because in those days movies were meant to be 'happy ending' but this unconventional masterpiece that emerge in those days wasnt worthy.

Panipat
(2019)

Ashutosh dont try to be Bhansali
One of the worst movie ever on historical subject, worst scenarios, worst acting, worst screenplay and worst casting. I dont Know which weed was taken by Ashutosh while choosing Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon in major roles. Is he the director of Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar? Its hard to digest that he is the same person. He had just forgotten the class of his direction style. Was he trying to beat his bogus film Mohenjo Daro?

Mountain Rest
(2018)

Calm, Peaceful and Complete Serenity
Drama movie like this are most peaceful to the heart and soul because of natural shots and truth inside the story. Truth of society how actresses are rejected and left naked when they do not lay over with someone. Mant great movies consist beautiful shots which moves us to watch them again and again for example A River Runs Through It(classic example), Legends of the Fall, Winter Sleep and The Wild Pear Trees. Mountain Rest dosent compete with them but still it is good to maintain your soul with serenity.

Southpaw
(2015)

Southpaw
The boxers had always confronted many hardships in their life, whether its family or fame. At one point a boxer is flying in the skies: full of arrogance, catching the words of support from millions of people. But just one little mistake, one little out behavior in their careers deteriorate their life for ever and they become the piece of trash until their death. Movies like Southpaw, The Fighter, Cinderella Man, Million Dollar Baby, Raging Bull, and Rocky are brilliant on the subject.

Chhichhore
(2019)

Motivational and Moving
One of the best film with its story, plot, acting, direction and nostalgic aspect. A movie with shouting message of how to deal with failure, how to love and enjoy the moment of your life, and how not to worry about the future if one fails. "We have plans ready for what happens after one succeeds. But if by chance one fails, we are not equipping them to deal with failure and no one wants to talk about that."

Toy Story 2
(1999)

Wonderful
I am giving it 10 stars just because of the part of Jessie telling her story that was very deep

The Mule
(2018)

My 52nd
Its my 52nd movie of Clint Eastwood that i have watched. I have his full collection of DVDs and still at the age of 87, he dosent seems to dissapoint. Classic Movie directed and acted by the Legend.

Incendies
(2010)

Rex
This, for me, is Oedipus Rex (by Sophocles) in movies. One of the best by Dennis. The plot and story resembles to Oedipus Rex, and a great story has revived by the hands of Dennis.

Beyond the Clouds
(2017)

Soul Enriching.
Seriously even the words i pour from my mouth in the praise of this movie would seem to be injustice. One of the best cinematic experience ever, depiction of poor areas and brothels are peerless. And the best scene was when the main character Amir is sleeping under the bed of patient, Akshi, and later awoken by little girl, Asha, and the same scene is repeated but this time Asha is sleeping under the bed. Director is depicting situation, mentality and the psyche of characters in the most prominent and powerful way. Soul enriching.

Thugs of Hindostan
(2018)

Bad Omen
This is the first movie in which two biggest stars of Bollywood, Mr. Bachan and Mr. Perfect Aamir Khan, have worked together. Aamir Khan since Lagaan has never been ridculed but his sudden collaboration with Bachan seems to be the only reason for the loss of the film. Direction, Plot and Screenplay must also bee taken care of otherwise there would be more debris: two biggest stars arent enough. And their was no need of the character of Suraiyya in this movie but just for entertainment purposes and for glamour it was added. Movies must had been in the form sobriety instead of its comical impulse. At the end i would say that dont be bias about Mr. Bachan though he is best actor but was a bad omen to Mr. Perfectionist.

Nuovo Cinema Paradiso
(1988)

Unlimited Stars from my side.
Cinema Pradiso is one of the most greatest movie ever made. I dont have words to describe. The movie will remain with me forever and ever. My only wish after death would be to watch this movie. Perfect movie. Giuseppe has given his life and energy to come up with this masterpiece. If compare many Drama movies Cinema Pradiso will remain on top. I felt my heart burst into tears and the music composed by Ennio Moricone penetrate my soul and touched the deepest part of my heart. Nostalgia. Painful.

La corrispondenza
(2016)

Not Giuseppe.
As compare to his former, exceptionally great, movies like Cinema Paradiso, The Legend of 1900, Malena, Sttano Tutti Bene(Everbodys Fine), Baaria, The Best Offer and The Unknown Women, his Correspondence is somewhat left me in depsair. His direction skills are peerless with impulse of emotions and feeling in most of his movies with touch of comedy. Correspondence is what i will call not a movie of Guissepe.
