Adam
(2019)

It's just a coming of age film
Some of the reviews on here are just way over the top angry mob stuff. Watch it for yourself it's not that bad. I'm gay and I didn't find it particularly offensive. Not everyone has the perfect vocabulary to describe the LGBTIQ+ experience and it keeps changing anyway. The important thing is to treat people with love and respect whatever their experience - sadly not always present in the LGBTIQ+ community :-(

It's awkward and geeky and a bit preposterous in places but it's very standard coming of age stuff.

The comedy of errors stuff is a bit trying.

Baisers cachés
(2016)

A moving film
This isn't a great work of cinematic art and in places it is clumsy. However, it is moving and very touching.

Others have pointed out that modern France is not as virulently homophobic. The film seems to address attitudes which are at least twenty years out of date. That said there are significant portions of the population who still think like this and perhaps films like this are still necessary?

Nathan's experiences mirror my own in the 60's and 70's. It was a traumatic to relive some of the terror and existential dread. I remember constantly looking over my shoulder in case there was someone after me and I didn't have a boyfriend.

Innocent
(2018)

A Compelling Watch
A compelling and sometimes moving mini-series. It draws on powerful themes around injustice, infidelity and jealousy.

Good performances by the leads: Lee Ingleby, Daniel Ryan, Adrian Rawlins, Hermione Norris and Angel Coulby. The supporting actors also good - no one stands out as particularly bad or overwhelmingly good. It seems to be a good cast who work well together.

Scripting was good although there were elements, particularly towards the end, that I thought were very clumsily resolved. I would go as far as saying that a few things seemed jarringly far fetched.

Nevertheless, a thoroughly enjoyable and compelling watch.

Company Business
(1991)

Not as bad as the critics say
Apparently this film bombed at the box office and the director was very disappointed with how the whole thing turned out.

However, the film has a certain post cold war charm and the two leads Gene Hackman and Mihail Baryshnikov play nicely opposite each other.

True it's not a well finished film and scripting is, at times, nonsensical.

The Spy Who Dumped Me
(2018)

Good fun
Good fun - perhaps a tad under-rated. I thought it delivered plenty of laughs and some good action too. Not a heavy weight film but certainly entertaining.

It does miss a few opportunities and could have made more of the obvious humour in some of the scenes. Occasionally it all becomes a little self-conscious.

Good performances especially from the three leads, Kunis, McKinnon and Heughan. Theroux just doesn't quite cut it as a super spy though.

Worth an evening in.

Pan
(2015)

Passes the time
An OK film which could have been much better.

Fun and entertaining with a few good laughs but it misses so many opportunities.

Victoria & Abdul
(2017)

Touching Story of a Forbidden and Unrequited Love
A very touching story of a friendship which crossed so many divides. Victoria was no saint but you get to see the gentler side of a woman who was nominally ruler of half the world. A woman, who despite immense wealth was desperately lonely.

It deftly exposes a court and a society deeply riven by the most awful racism and elitism.

Judy Dench was of course brilliantly convincing but Ali Fazal who plays Abdul Karim was equally excellent.

Man in an Orange Shirt
(2017)

Lived reality for many gay men
Sadly very close to reality for many gay people around the world even in 2019. A tragic story of forbidden love played out across several generations - it's beautifully done and movingly portrayed.

Possibly the second part could have been condensed? I felt that it rather detracted from the power of the first part. Part two was an altogether more run of the mill story with the writer seeming to want to wrap things up neatly for us.

A great cast and some solid performances the two leads in the first part (Oliver Jackson-Cohen and James McArdle) were particularly strong.

Part one on its own was worthy of 9 stars, part two only gets a six from me.

The Pleasure of Your Company
(2006)

Annoying
An annoying film with a few good laughs

What was annoying? Implausible plot twists

What was good? After a bit of a slow start it's got a reasonable pace. Plus there were a few good laughs. The leads are both convincing in their roles and they do their best to bring up the rest of the cast.

Only average - good for doing the ironing.

Scenes from a Gay Marriage
(2012)

Boring and Pedestrian
A well made film - nicely filmed and passable acting but about as exciting as watching paint dry.

If the intention was to show how banal gay life is then they succeeded hands down.

I can't believe that they bothered to make a sequel to this yawn-fest.

Bonding
(2018)

Dark but Refreshingly funny
I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before. Don't be fooled - it's not all sleazy sex and bondage - that's just the backdrop for a witty and often touching situation comedy.

Scripting is slick and comic timing sublime. How the actors manage to keep a straight face - they deserve medals.

Camera work, setting, casting, etc all done well.

The only pity is that there's not more of it.

Teen Wolf
(1985)

A bit dated
Some films age gracefully - not this one. Very much a film of its era.

The scripting is often flimsy and plot twists clumsy. Music is often cheesy 80s synth - some may enjoy it - I found it annoying. Michael Fox plays Michael Fox ...

That said it has a few moments of humour, and it maintains a good pace.

Good for a quiet night in.

Before We Go
(2014)

Not as bad as some say
This isn't the finest film ever made - but it's by no means the worst. It's understated romance wins you over by the end. This is Chris Evans' directorial debut - I think he might have done better not to have taken the lead and spent more time behind the camera. It lacks sharpness and energy as a result.

All that said Chris Evans and Alice Eve are both good looking on the screen, it's well filmed and it ably evokes the feeling of sitting around late night having missed a train waiting for something to happen.

It's not a film that you say to a friend "you must watch this!" But it's OK if there's nothing else happening ;-)

Weekend
(2011)

Simple but powerful
Very much a dialogue driven film: it's a kind of extended conversation between two men which slowly gets deeper and deeper.

The plot is simple to the point of being almost non-existent - dramatic tension is built between the two principle characters simply through their interaction. It seems to flow seamlessly from opening scenes through to the closing credit. But don't let this put you off - it kind of works, mostly thanks to the acting skills of the two leads: Tom Cullen and Chris New. Both are utterly convincing and keep you in the moment.

The cinematography is well done. Occasionally the hand-held camera work becomes a bit evident: clearly done to make some of the long dialogue scenes seem edgier.

Overall not bad.

God's Own Country
(2017)

Moving: Great film
An excellent film. I had avoided it because of the reference to "God" in the title - my mistake. The reference is simply to the location in the wilds of Yorkshire.

Moody and intense, it is a tale of redemption as much as it is of love and passion. Beautifully acted by leads Alec Secareanu and Josh O'Conner, Secareanu is particularly good. Good supporting cast with Gemma Jones, Ian Hart as parental figures and numbers of others.

Well worth the time.

Beach Rats
(2017)

Moody and Dark
It's supposedly about a young man coming to terms with his sexuality and wrestling with who he should be hanging out with. I felt that rather than exploring these themes it meanders around them.

The mood is kept dark and edgy - hand held camera work is very much the go here. The colouring is also fairly monochrome. Generally the cinematography was fine.

Acting was passable - no real stand outs - the lead was OK but I don't think the director stretched him.

Passable.

Equilibrium
(2002)

Non-stop Adrenaline Packed
They spent $20million on this film so you'd expect it to be good. For that money it's OK but not stunning.

It certainly is a non-stop adrenaline packed ride from beginning to end but it lacks charm or warmth. None of the main characters have any warmth or humanity about them - not even the lead, Christian Bale. Although in this dystopian view of the world that's the point - emotion of any kind has been eradicated. The trouble is that for a film that's supposed to entertain, that's a pretty lousy premise.

However, if you like lots of shooting, hand fights, and other random acts of violence then this is definitely the film for you. It's fast, loud and fairly relentless.

Passes a quiet evening in moderately well.

Food of Love
(2002)

Amazing Cast - Disappointing Result
What a great cast for a film that disappoints in so many ways. I've given this only 4/10 because such a good cast should be able to deliver a far better result even with a below average script. Saying that about the cast, Kevin Bishop, the handsome lead, was wooden and expressionless.

The scripting was turgid and meandered it's way until it eventually arrived at the credits.

Disappointing and forgettable

Broadway Damage
(1997)

Light and fluffy
There's not too much in this film which is challenging or thought provoking. It is light and entertaining - there are a few small laughs - a few musical numbers (although not enough to justify the title) and a few gentle plot twists.

It is a bit clichéd gay - you could say gay for straight people. Intimate moments are very tame and usually only hinted at. It is certainly safe for your maiden aunt.

Acting, and cinematography are handled in a workmanlike, but unremarkable way. The lead, Michael Lucas, is good to look at but the director rarely takes advantage of his physique.

Scripting is the film's achilles heel. It can be ponderous and dreary. While other parts seem rushed and unfinished. Too often dramatic tension is wasted particularly in the closing scenes.

Not a great film but not awful either.

Role/Play
(2010)

Very third rate
If you enjoy your eye candy and like watched suggestive bedroom scenes then this is probably the film for you.

For everyone else, it's got everything a third rate film should have * Wooden acting - I know we all enjoy a bit of wood but pinocchio could have done better at acting * Boring cinematography - Silent black and white movies had more style * Clichéd pedestrian script - a kindergarten kid could have come up with something more compelling * Preachy - That kind of stuff belongs in the churches that condemn us

I'm giving it three stars. Just occasionally the acting rallies and there seems to be a bit of a spark between the main characters but then it flame is quickly extinguished.

Rob Williams! My namesake! Too often your films are a waste of your money and our time. You could do soooooo much better. You have all the ingredients - beautiful men - a fantastic state to film them in and yet ...

The Hitman's Bodyguard
(2017)

A Fun Romp
This was never going to be a high brow film - but it's very entertaining. It is very heavy on gratuitous violence, car chases, swearing, etc etc etc to the point of being almost relentless. However, sometimes you want something that explodes out of the screen on every other scene.

It's a good cast. performances from Jackson and Reynolds were what you'd expect from two of Hollywood's stars. They were ably supported by Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek, Élodie Yung and Richard E Grant.

Good to make the ironing or other hated household chores pass very quickly.

A fun romp.

Beautiful Something
(2015)

Better than I thought it was going to be
I expected sleazy gay trash bordering on porn but what I got was a reasonably intelligent thought provoking introspection into gay love - in the broadest sense of the term.

Don't expect a lot of eye candy. There is a lot of gratuitous sex but it is tempered by good acting, professional cinematography and a moderately good script. It does lapse periodically, but on the whole you're left with a feeling that at least a couple of the characters have achieved a life-changing moment.

I watched it with my husband and it provoked some discussion between us. Good for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Moonlight
(2016)

Sublime - disturbing - moving
Up there with some of my favourite films: although not one I will play on repeat often: it's a bit close to the knuckle for me. A lot of Chiron's early life mirrors my own. I've lived the feelings of abandonment, bewilderment, fear and anger. I've felt cast adrift in a loveless world that doesn't seem to have space for me.

Beautifully performed, atmospheric cinematography, and tight scripting: not much is wasted. The plot line is carried masterfully through all three "acts" of the screenplay. This is the only slightly jarring thing, the way the film is carved up into acts as if you were at the theatre. It's one way of marking the passage of time - perhaps not the most successful?

It deserves far more accolades than it has received - but being about a black, gay character puts the film into two categories that Hollywood still marginalises.

Watch it! It will leave its mark on you.

My Brother's Shoes
(2015)

How do films like this get finance?
You have to ask how on earth do films like this get finance let alone promoted on channels like Amazon Prime? Awful! Wooden acting, below average scripts and poor cinematography. Why am I even bothering to write a review? To save you the embarassing time.

It has a few moments and the plot occasionally rallies enough to pull you through to the end.

Some may find it gripping but I think for most, the feeling you will get is - why did I waste my time watching this?

Eastern Boys
(2013)

Powerful
This film is not for the faint hearted - it's fairly full on - powerful and moving. The language bar is very low. Shot in French, English and Russian - you don't really need to know much of the other languages to understand it. It's tense and moody - especially the first half.

Strong performances from the leads and from main supporting actors.
