Koombiyo
(2017)

An intriguing story of a con-artist
At a point of time when Sri Lankan television drama audience was drowned by Indian, Korean and other international dramas as well as many meaningless Sri Lankan mega-melo dramas "Koombiyo" became a bright ray of light.

Started to watch this drama a few weeks ago as a result of the whooping social media campaign. Like many others, I too got hooked by this drama. The plot is very intriguing and the story flows fast. The series is a selection of several missions carried out by the protagonist Jehan who happens to be a con-artist.

Hats off to the writer and director Lakmal Darmarathna and Damitha Chandrasiri also to the main cast Thumindu Dodanthanna (Jehan) and Kalana Jayanath (Priyantha) for their realistic portrayal of their characters.

Gunhamdo
(2017)

Cinematic chapter of a hidden history lesson
The Battleship Island was one of the most awaited Korean movies in 2017 and it did not disappoint the audience.

As a total stranger who did not know anything about Hashima Island and the coal mines that were operated by the Japanese during the 1940s, the movie gave me a lot information of that history, which actually made me read more how the Koreans were enslaved during Japanese occupational era.

The movie tells a story of 400 Korean men, women and children who were trapped and slaved to work in a coal mine with minimum facilities given. The difficulties faced by the victims and the power struggle between officials and them are shown in a very realistic nature. The three lead characters are of Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub and Song Joong-ki. Hwang is a a bad master who tries to immigrates to Japan but is sent to this island with his daughter. So is a gangster from Seoul who ends up in the same situation as Hwang. However, Song only appears in the movie after about half an hour of its run and completely steels the scenes afterwards. Unlike the others he being an under-cover soldier is sent to the island to rescue a so-called patriotic leader who is trapped. However, things goes in a different direction and all of them unites to rebel against the Japanese officials and flee the island by ship to return to Korea.

Throughout the movie we can see patriotism vs betrayal, power against the feeble and poor which is applicable for modern times as well. I personally enjoyed this movies which I recommend for those who prefers movies of this genre: history and patriotism.

Mischievous Kiss
(2010)

Insanely lame drama with a cute couple
I have read many people, mentioning this drama a..k.a Playful Kiss as one of their favorite dramas. So, I honestly had my hopes up and was eagerly looking forward for a great rom-com when I began watching this.

But my high expectations were soon shattered and I was disappointed as the story was very lame and unrealistic.

SPOILER AHEAD: Kim Hyung Joong's character Baek Seung-jo was supposed to be a genius at studies with a high level of IQ who has the potential of entering any top university and perusing any profession. Initially, he is annoyed by Oh Ha ni played by Jung So min who has a mega crush for him. Jung So Min's character is portrayed as a very clumsy, needy, weak girl which made me annoyed with her character. Yet, Beak's mother seems to be in favour of Ha ni and even wants to make her the wife of his son despite how stupid she appears and dislike of his son. The couple in fact ends marrying at a very young age.

Overall, I somehow ended up finishing the drama as the couple was cute and I liked both Kim Hyung Joong and Jung So Min. I feel the lead actor and actress did justice to their characters. I'm sure it would be such a great drama if the screen writing was better.

Yeokdoyojeong Gim Bokju
(2016)

A fun rom-com sports Kdrama
This is one of the best rom-com Kdramas in 2016. The leading couple Lee Sung-Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk is like eye candy to watch. Such a well matched on screen couple and the chemistry between the two are so good that their acting appears to be flawless.

The flow of the story is great. Unlike in most Korean dramas where the plot makes a twist in the last 1-2 episode, this drama gradually develops to a predictable, yet well-suited ending.

The drama tries to portray real hardships and situations faced by athletes who are majoring various sports like weightlifting, swimming and gymnastics in Sports Universities.

This drama is definitely recommended as a stress reliever and fun to watch.

Ma-seu-teo
(2016)

A financial thriller with top-billed cast
It is rare to find three top-billed cast in a single South Korean movie, which probably explains why 'Master' shot up to the top of the box-office charts and attracted 5 million viewers in the first two weeks in the home country.

This financial thriller revolves around President Jin (Lee Byung- hun), of One Network who is heading a pyramid scheme. He is a cold- hearted, greedy con man who plays the most complex character as he brings up the main theme of the story. Park Jang Goon (Kim Woo-bin) plays an expert systems manager who seems to shift loyalties between police and villains multiple times. Kim binds the two characters of Lee and Kang together and plays a witty, two-dimensional character. Kim Jae Myung (Kang Dong-won) is an obligatory police captain who plots to catch the bad guys and bring justice to the innocent people who were scammed. I personally find Kang's character the best and his exceptional performance in this movie is absolutely remarkable. The bromance among the three characters is not to be missed.

The storyline flows fast while building some degree of suspense, especially towards the latter part. However, half of the running time shows how one double-crosses another and the story to circle around itself without getting anywhere. There are a few action scenes and nothing brutal. Neither any sort of romance is involved.

The movie is shot in South Korea initially and moves to Manilla, Philipines towards the latter.

I definitely recommend this movie to everyone who enjoys thrillers.

In-gan-jung-dok
(2014)

Truly sensual, passionate and addictive movie
The movie is set in 1969 and revolves around an Army Colonel Kim Jin-pyong, played by Song Seung Hoon who is recognized as a war hero who served in the Vietnam War. He is married to a daughter of a high ranking official. Song depicts an introverted character who keeps to himself amidst the mental suffering of post-traumatic disorder. However, everything changes when he falls in love with a beautiful young wife of a subordinate.

The love story between the two is almost like love at first sight. Yet, it is pure, passionate and grows up to an obsession for Colonel Kim where he even tries to take up his own life at one point. The latter half of the movie flows quite fast and certain areas remain ambiguous to the viewer. The sad ending to the movie makes it more real and compassionate.

Overall, the movies showcase how a man can change when he finds his own true love and how it becomes a destruction. If you are a fan of Hollywood movies like Unfaithful or Fifty Shades of Grey, this movie Obsessed is in par with them as per Korean standards.

Song Seung Hoon's first movie of this genre and a must watch. I believe his acting must be appreciated more in this movie as this is a very different character compared to the ones he has played before and he does justice. Rookie actress Lim Ji-yeon on the hand shows mature acting and very bold.

Highly recommended.

Gangnam 1970
(2015)

A movie worthy of the actor's dramatic talents
This movie elaborates the struggles people in Gangnam district had to go through with various changes with power. As a non Korean viewer, I recommend this to watched in terms of power corruption, brutality and rejection in society. However the end is not what most would expect, however it gives the story more realistic appeal.

The incredibly played character is that of Lee Min Ho. I was pleasantly surprised by the acting of Min Ho. As I have always seen him as a cheerful, melodramatic flower boy in many of his dramas. In fact quite shocking. This really shows his capabilities of adjusting to various roles as a great actor. He has changed his experience to suit this character and delivers a noteworthy performance.

I recommend this movie and it is worth the time spent to watch.

Shang jin lie ren
(2016)

Picaresque Movie
One of the most awaited movies of Lee Min Ho. As he himself mentioned, very different to his last movie, Gangnam Blues. I would say not that brutal. The story is quite predictable and flows fast. Wallace Chung creates humor with his character and is successful at it. Lee Min Ho plays a character 'suppose' to be good in martial arts, however the camera angles does not let the viewers see clear actions, as most action scenes are shot very close, so either we see the upper body or lower body that moves fast. However,I believe he does justice to his character. The film locations and use of props gives the movie a high cost appeal and is set in luxury hotels and resorts. Overall the movie is a picaresque.
