Riveting From Start To Finish Admittedly, I originally only put this movie on out of sheer curiosity and desire to see Emma Watson in an entirely different role than in any of her previous endeavours. I was not disappointed- in fact I felt immediately captivated by this strange, overlooked corner of German/Chilean history told through a Hollywood lens.
Indeed, elements of the story have surely been greatly warped to suit the silver screen (I am hardly knowledgeable about the true events on which Colonia is based) but I didn't feel that these changes distracted from the heavy message and dark history of the story. On the contrary, I felt that the movie offered a believable perspective of events while telling the story on an entertaining and multi-faceted level. In other words, Colonia offered the necessary respect for the history without leaving me deeply disturbed. Moved, certainly, but not disturbed as would be so easy with such a gruesome story.
I appreciated the combination of action, drama, thrills, and romance. I thought Watson and Bruhl were excellent and well-suited to their respective roles; their chemistry was also good (surprisingly so, in fact).
All in all I found the story kept moving and held my attention extremely well. I found myself on the edge of my seat and unable to leave without witnessing the conclusion! I would recommend this movie to anyone with the slightest interest in history, the struggle against oppression, or Emma Watson. ;) (She does does give a very nice performance)
