This is a hybrid soap opera and medical procedural drama rolled into one. The medical aspects are simply ridiculous, it's more about the dramas surrounding the characters. However, these undercurrents are so strong that the constant bickering, open discussion of private lives in front of patients just make it all.....ridiculous. It really makes The Pitt look outstanding, when in itself, Pitt is just very mediocre. This has the usual diverse cast of characters that cover the full range of ethnicities, disabilities, genders etc. Unfortunately, what it lacks is a story that can be told without flashbacks that resemble PTSD episodes. It's really a Pulse that's impalpable, and on its way to stopping!
This film has a lot of mumbling, staring and incoherent dialog. Most of the story is difficult to follow as the actors stick to few words and some of the scenes add little to the narrative. They do tend to stare at one another a lot, and one has to fast forward through the scenes to get past the the prolonged camera shots that are fixed on blank facial expressions. Yes, the action segments are exciting, but it's the other scenes, some of which are like w seconds in length that make little sense. Brolin and Del Toro play their characters well and the background musical score is good, but it's the wasted camera shots and lingering shots that make one happy that "fast forward" exists!
This series is a throwback to the 1970s sitcom genre, complete with canned laugh track and delivery of lines that are mainly one liners. The acting is sometimes forced, and actors seem to be mainly reciting their lines. One imagines after each one liner or quip, you would get a drum tap like in the stage comedy sessions. It's not the Golden Girls, nor even Will and Grace. The cheesiness shines through with the cast of stereotypical characters and lack of themes that would have some relevance and appeal to modern gay thinking. It just seems to be a huge waste of talent. It passes the time but not sure it'll survive for a second season.
