Blood of Zeus
(2020)

Rather poorly done
I'll try to keep it simple.

PROS: 1. The art and animation are decent 2. The main villain Seraphim is nicely depicted, with some interesting background 3. The Giants look very good 4. There is an interesting twist at the very end, giving us a clue that there may be a Season 2.

CONS: 1. The story is basically about Hera getting mad at Zeus because he cheated on her. So, in order to get her revenge, she decided to kill Zeus and destroy the Olympus with the help of the Giants she brought back from the dead (of which only Hades should be capable). As if that isn't absurd enough, half of the Gods from Olympus decided to back her up. 2. The main protagonist Heron is dull, shallow and overly uninteresting, making it hard to like him. In almost every scene, he looks like a little girl who is about to cry. He is a son of Zeus that has no special power. That is, until the very end, where he is shown only as a pale copy of Zeus. 3. Only a few Gods actively participate in the story. All the others are there only as a decoration. They do nothing even when mortals come to casually visit the Olympus. 4. The supporting characters are poorly developed and some of them are completely out of place and given importance for no specific reason. 5. The Gods hardly show any interesting godlike abilities. Gandalf and Saruman have shown more power in LOTR. 6. Special attention was given to some epic weapons only to be completely forgotten a few episodes later. Generally, legendary godlike weapons are not shown. 7. Hardly any attention was paid to Giants and their powers 8. The Oneiroi were presented as particularly important but haven't done anything important 9. The ending is rushed and rather poor. The fates of Zeus and Hera are left unexplained and unclear. 10. Overall, this doesn't have much relation with actual mythology. I believe everything would be better if Netflix just made their own pantheon of gods with their own rules, without clinging to popular stories that have been re-told countless times.

CONCLUSION: Not worth watching

La cara oculta
(2011)

Don't watch the trailer!
First of all, if you've already watched the trailer then this movie will hardly be interesting to you.

One of the things I really hate is when I see a good idea ruined by a below-average realization. And this is one such case.

The idea is very original, which is very hard to achieve nowadays. The acting is decent, even though the main actor is not the right guy for this role. The plot is mysterious and well designed, if we ignore certain cliché and predictable moments.

There are two stories here. The second one begins in the middle of the film and fills the holes of the first story. The mystery unfolds and you wonder what will happen next. And then the movie is over. Just like that. This story has no ending! No point!

Given that, this is an average movie at best. Considering that this is something unfinished, I recommend that you skip this one and save yourself some time.

What Happened to Monday
(2017)

A tale of radical decisions
Let's just say that this story was very wrong for this idea. The idea itself - not so bad. But the realization - horrible. The only good thing was watching Noomi Rapace in seven roles at once.

You can't make a futuristic action movie full of unnecessarily gory scenes which were in 90% of time caused by insanely radical decisions and call it a good idea. The point (if there was any) that the writers and directors were trying to make simply got lost in all the running, shooting and explosions. I sincerely wondered at one time: when will it all end?

Actually, at the very end of the movie, there is some feeble attempt of justifying all the terrible things that happened. But that only made it even worse than it already was.

All in all, hardly worth the time. There are plenty of far better movies out there.

Miami Connection
(1987)

Just plain trash
When people make a trash movie, they are usually aware of that. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case here.

Even by trash standards, this movie is very bad. As if somebody copied some ninja movies by mixing very poorly performed martial arts with the most stupid plot ever. When you add to that some ridiculous gory scenes, very cheap "special" effects, horrible dubbing and even more horrible acting, all followed by cheesy music with even cheesier lyrics, then what you get is not a trash movie, but a plain trash. Not one scene can be considered even barely watchable and those who took part in making this crap only made fools out of themselves and now have to live with that 'till the rest of their lives.

I guess somebody may find this trash amusing (and only in cases of serious intoxication) but I'm not one of those people. This is a disgrace for martial arts and an insult for the brain and it's a real shame that I can't rate this with a zero.

Bloody Bloody Bible Camp
(2012)

Pointless and humorless
I don't mind watching trashy parody movies that have no specific plot or point as long as they are funny and entertaining. This one has none of the aforementioned.

The idea itself is, of course, cliché, but surely something could have been done in this movie to justify its given genre. Unfortunately, the realization has failed on so many levels that I've lost the interest after circa 10 minutes of lame mischief.

Low-budget is not a problem if you know how to entertain the audience. The creators of this movie obviously don't know how to do that. Their piece of work is neither funny nor scary, full of random "jokes" which are almost always out of place, and I got the impression that none of the people who participated in filming this failure actually wanted to make this movie.

So, save your time and skip this absurdity.

Korkusuz
(1986)

Hilarious!!!
I laughed so hard watching this trashy masterpiece. After all, we are talking about Turkish interpretation of Rambo, and I watched the dubbed version.

Just to be clear - almost nothing makes sense in this movie regarding the plot and the story. But then again, that is quite unimportant in this case. What is especially interesting is that I think that these second-rate actors really did as best as they could and seemed to fully believe in this project in which they were participating. And that is priceless.

It's a shame I cannot rate this higher due to its deficiencies. I gladly recommend this movie to all the trash movie fans but also to those who've never seen a trash movie before. All in all, it's a completely new experience.

Shaft
(2000)

It's watchable...
They had the funds, they had the means, they had some good acting crew, they even had a fine reputation of the previous Shaft, but somehow they managed to make only half a movie - the second half is barely watchable.

The first half goes quite smoothly, introducing us with the main characters and the main plot. Samuel L. Jackson is a great choice for the role of Shaft, but even his flawless appearance couldn't make this movie special, or even above average.

This new Shaft lacks cunning and authority, making him nothing more than a regular cop who is trying to right the wrongs. And that would be just fine if the whole bunch on nonsensical and absurd things didn't occur in the second part of the movie. As if all the following events were just randomly piled upon each other, still connected with the story, but lacking common sense. All of that just made me indifferent about how the movie will end.

Still, it's watchable, but don't expect anything special and overly exciting.

The Babadook
(2014)

Interesting, but nothing new
You don't need violence and gore to make a horror movie. And Babadook is a fine example.

Even though the idea itself is nothing new, I found this movie interesting. Mostly because of the actors who did a really amazing job and greatly contributed to the overall impression of a dark and bleak atmosphere, with their frustration and agony very well depicted. It is a psychological horror story, but only mildly frightening.

A few objections are due to the very slow pace of the movie, and due to the fact that some quite important story-related things are left unexplained.

Thus, if you exclusively like shocking, bloody, violent jump horrors, then know that this movie isn't for you.

Viking
(2016)

Hack & slash & fail
It is always difficult to make a movie based on historical facts. One must do a thorough research and properly put those facts in the movie. But one should also try to make that movie interesting and entertaining. Otherwise you'll get a protracted documentary.

First of all, the title has almost nothing to do with the story. The story indeed follows the historical facts, but is told in such a messy way, full of illogical, irrational and unjustifiable events and decisions that it is tiresome to watch. You will find illogicality and complete idiocy even during the fight scenes. Moreover, this movie has no specific plot, no higher agenda and no epic moments, which all makes it difficult for the spectators to connect with the story.

The story is practically about just one person and I kept wondering why it is so. Throughout the whole movie, the main character is completely and utterly useless, failing each and every challenge in front of him. Call it a paradox, but he somehow managed to fail even when he was winning. I wonder if director's decision was to purposely make this character so weak and clumsy. If it was, it's a bad decision because no one wants to watch a 2-hour movie where the main protagonist is a weakling and an idiot. If it wasn't, then the director has totally failed at his creation. I didn't "see" the main character. I didn't believe in him for one moment. He is not strong, he is not smart, he is not a great warrior, and not a great leader. So why is he the main character?

I do not blame any of the actors, they really did their best. I blame the writers and the producers for ruining the potential this story had. Thus, I do not recommend this movie, there are far better ways to spend your time than watching this nonsense.

Suicide Squad
(2016)

Just another average movie
Up 'till now, I guess we all got used to the fact that today's superhero movies are not so super as they are supposed to be. Moreover, they are rather average, just like this one.

The acting crew of Suicide Squad is pretty good and they depict their characters pretty good (although Killer Croc should be twice bigger). But that was of little help to this movie, since it practically drowned in the mess of its own story.

The movie begins quite slowly. Then, out of a sudden, the plot begins quite accidentally and develops so fast (and without adequate explanation) that it disrupts the pace, making you wonder what happened. Then the story develops into constant not-so-special action with average CGI, overall inconsistency, lame jokes and cliché wisecracks. To me, the very idea of the plot was odd and uninventive.

Character development is unevenly performed. There are two main characters who simply overshadowed other seemingly important characters. To somehow fix that, the producers frequently inserted unnecessary and pointless dialogues between the action scenes. To no avail. The supporting characters remained shallow and, for the most part of the movie, utterly useless.

Still, this movie is watchable, but don't expect anything special. If you like the Suicide Squad from the comics, the animated movie Batman: Assault on Arkham is far better exemplar.

Year of the Dog
(2007)

Sad, depressing and pointless
Usually when people make movies they do that for a specific reason. To entertain, to tell a tale, to make a point. This movie has none of those.

Although labeled a comedy, not one scene in this movie is funny or even amusing. On the contrary, the majority of scenes are sad, dull and even disturbing. Not only that this movie isn't about dogs; this movie even isn't about the people. There is no specific story or plot, as if the scenes are randomly piled upon each other, giving the impression that something is going on but nothing actually happens.

In the end, one would think that there should be an epilogue or any kind of explanation for this confusing story. There isn't. Except in case that the director's idea was actually to put the audience into a state of deep depression and psychosis.

This is truly a sad and deranged creation and shouldn't even be called a movie.

Eagle Eye
(2008)

Old idea in a new package
Eagle Eye is very well designed to easily gain your attention. It's got a promising, mysterious plot that quickly takes you to a journey of fine action followed by some great special effects.

Even when a part of the mystery is revealed, showing a rather old, worn out idea, the pace of the movie is such that you either miss or ignore all the holes and inconsistencies, whose number, unfortunately, is quite large.

The actors did a solid job and I liked the fact that their characters lacked the traits of excessive nagging and whining, despite dangerous and desperate situations.

This story certainly isn't something new, but I consider this movie worth watching, especially if you like constant action, CGI and exciting atmosphere.

Battleship
(2012)

Lame, cliché and poorly performed
It seldom happens in movies that I hope the bad guys will defeat the good guys. Still, it happens, especially if the majority of those "good guys" are arrogant, irritating, self-styled smart asses who always have more luck than sense and who constantly shoot out lame, pseudo-clever phrases.

Except for the CGI, there is nothing likable in this movie. The story is cliché and shallow, full of bad-ass-wannabe-characters who allow themselves to continuously and randomly jump to conclusions according to which they take approximate actions in order to solve a serious, obscure and unknown problem the whole world is facing. Even worse, that tactics actually works.

Aside from story being absurd and ridiculous, the acting has also failed on many levels. As if someone has explicitly asked from the actors to poorly and idiotically express their roles. Even the quality actors had no chance to in any way improve this movie steeped in ignorance, sloppiness and political correctness.

This is a complete waste of time and an insult for intellect and I hope that I can somehow erase this unfavorable experience from my memory.

Ironclad
(2011)

Dark, raw and brutal
Even though historically inaccurate, I found this movie appealing, due to its gloomy atmosphere, raw characters and great fighting performances.

Filmed with low budget, the story focuses on a specific event, therein lacking certain depth and dynamics. Although poorly developed, the characters are well chosen and give the impression that they actually belong to that time and place. I especially liked how James Purefoy expressed the dark of his character.

The fighting scenes are realistic, brutal and very convincing, and it is a real drawback that the chaotic camera movement spoiled that which is best in this movie.

If you like raw medieval action, violence and gore, then this is the movie for you.

Sammy's avonturen: De geheime doorgang
(2010)

Weak story without a plot
It is always nice seeing some movie or cartoon inspired by the tales from the sea. But this movie has no tale.

Almost from the start, the audience was offered no promising or even interesting story, nothing that would make them continue watching. This movie just began and went on with its slow pace, with no specific goal ahead, as if it is some documentary about the life in the sea depths.

Even though the artwork is nicely done, little it contributed to overall impression. The characters, somewhat dull and naive, lacking vividness and soul, are literary swimming through this story, having almost no effect on its development.

So, this is by no means some special tale, let alone adventure, but children up to the age of 6 may find it appealing due to fine artwork and pretty colors. Otherwise, I do not recommend this movie, as I think it would be a waste of time.

Conan the Barbarian
(1982)

One of the greatest movies ever made
The movies that I can watch over and over again are very rare. Those movies have such story and such atmosphere, that each time I see them they only get better and better. Conan the Barbarian undoubtedly belongs to that category.

It is one of the first movies I have ever watched and, up today, never have I seen such a powerful atmosphere and such perfect blend of picture and music, where each track so faithfully belongs to its scene. The composer Basil Poledouris really surpassed himself.

The story of this movie, while adventure in every respect, gives out the feeling of clear purpose and carries a strong, epic philosophy. The choice of characters is simply flawless. Here, Arnold Schwarzenegger does not play Conan. Here, Arnold Schwarzenegger IS Conan, and no other actor could express that role in such a downright manner. And probably never will.

This movie pins me down to the TV screen every time I randomly come across it. And every time that happens I watch it until the end, thinking how great this movie is. I can say that I am grateful that John Milius has made this masterpiece and I believe that Robert E. Howard would be proud to see how inspiring his creation is.

Deadpool
(2016)

Funny, entertaining and refreshing
I am aware that to many people (especially those unfamiliar with Deadpool comic or Marvel comics at all) this movie would seem too gory, unnecessary brutal and excessively violent. But this movie is a comedy, where its main protagonist, Deadpool, should be perceived as a comedian, and Ryan Reynolds did an excellent job representing this character.

The story of Deadpool isn't complex or profound - and it wasn't meant to be. This movie is all about fun and entertainment, abundant with action, jokes, blood and foul language. Therefore, it is not suitable for children. I grew tired of people thinking that movies based on comics are intended for children only.

Related to that, I believe that many Marvel movies could have been far more successful if they didn't refrain from gory scenes. I am sorry, but if you want to make a serious combat-based movie and you make it without blood, than that movie will be all but serious.

That is why I see Deadpool as a refreshment. Nowadays many writers and directors are too worried about political correctness in their movies. That really stifles creativity and that is why today we have so many movies with great ideas but poor realization.

Thus, to me, Deadpool was a very pleasant surprise, I had fun watching it, and I intend to watch it again some time soon.

Jack the Giant Slayer
(2013)

A fine adventure indeed
I know that many people would think that this is nothing new since everybody knows a story about the magic beans. But it is the idea of depicting such a story in an interesting and entertaining way that counts.

This movie is a fairy tale in every respect, as it possesses all the required elements - the fantastic surroundings, lots of action, tense atmosphere, harmless jokes, simple-hearted good guys and unscrupulous bad guys with twisted agendas. Once again, nothing new, but everything neatly adapted for modern audiences.

As the story goes, there is always something going on, thus the dull moments are rare, but unfortunately, due to such pace, there was no time for a more thorough character development.

Other than that, I find this movie nice, amusing and easy to watch, and I therefore gladly recommend it.

True Grit
(2010)

Could have been better
Being a remake of a fabled western from 1969. and having a fine acting crew, this movie had a great potential. However, the producers/directors failed to properly use all that potential and managed only to make a slightly above-average movie.

While the focus of the story was on Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld (who both did an excellent job), all the other characters somehow remained vague and incomplete, including even that of Matt Damon's. That, along with several absolutely unnecessary and pointless scenes, contributed to creating an impression that the writers didn't really know what to do with certain parts of the movie.

The pace is quite slow during the whole movie, until the very end where everything is suddenly excessively accelerated, only to be stretched again with another unnecessary scene, without making a point.

All in all, this movie is an amusing adventure and should be watched, but not for comparison with the original True Grit.

Training Day
(2001)

Lost in inconsistency
This movie started with telling one story, but ended telling some completely different. And it wasn't due to the plot, but due to the inconsistency.

The idea itself is nothing new; nowadays we all know many stories about the crime on the streets and how the cops are trying to handle that problem. But at some point, almost abruptly, the story went to some other direction, adversely changing the pace of the movie.

The choices and motives of the main protagonists are blurred and unclear, and the movie didn't offer a reasonable explanation for some of their rather radical actions. Even though the acting and the role assignment are more than good, the overall character development is rather poor, giving the impression that the movie is just too short for this story.

All in all, this movie is nothing special due to a shallow realization and isn't really worth the time. I can only say that I wouldn't watch this movie again.
