El hoyo
(2019)

Spare yourself the boring agony
Where to start? This is a tedious, boring, horrid attempt to symbolize everything that's wrong with society and the human race in general. None of the characters, including the protagonist, are worth caring about. All of them are hideous. Average cinema gore is nothing compared to watching them eat. However, there is a message here - if you like insane, twisted, illogical, hate-filled sociopaths, spare yourself the agony and watch "The View" or videos of Antifa and BLM in action.

Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind
(2020)

Interesting and revealing
Extremely interesting non-religious documentary that dovetails with elements of every religion. One mind, one consciousness, that facilitates communication with other beings in the universe - a reality that's easy to comprehend, yet baffles most individuals and governments. The only negative is the few minutes at the beginning where they succumbed to some sort of political compulsion and digressed into baseless analogies that included the Pentagon Papers, Vietnam war, Iran-contra, and other totally irrelevant subjects (that had absolutely no contribution to the premise).

Hatari!
(1962)

Great non-PC flick!
This movie is a PC fanatic's worst nightmare. Starring right-wing John Wayne, macho white male sidekicks, naive women, a native American they call "Indian" and dozens of black Africans who follow orders and do the white man's bidding. There's constant cigarette smoking, whiskey drinking, and worst of all, profiteering from the capture and caging of wild animals destined for a life sentence in a zoo. I love it. Great flick!

Independence Day: Resurgence
(2016)

2010: Moby Dick
(2010)

Uh, ok...
I made it to about 7 minutes in. It begins with a hideous CGI whale (with teeth like a shark), and it trumpets like an elephant. The thing is the size of a sports stadium and can bite and hold a nuclear sub in it's mouth while coming to the surface, then smash it onto arctic ice, and finally bite it in half. Oh, and there's a crew member named "Ahab" who loses a leg in the process. If that fires your rocket, go for it.

Tread
(2019)

Unbiased
Very absorbing documentary depicting both sides of a contentious encounter with small town government. I remember when this happened. Many people actually supported Marv Heemeyer, saying that the town council and the good ole boy network had it coming.

Not surprising, as most people are indeed frustrated with sewage tap-in fees, property and school tax increases, zoning BS, and corrupt, heavy handed town councils & school boards who regard their office as a position of power instead of service to the community.

Obviously, Marvin Heemeyer made some bad choices, but they did too. Watch their eyes when they're talking - and consider the remark that what Heemeyer did "made the town a lot of money". Sound like someone trying to get one last jab in? In the end, Marv did "fight civil hall" - on his terms, and won the last battle. In his own words, he leveled the playing field. Not only that, he robbed his adversaries of a trial and the opportunity to send him to prison.

The Winds of War
(1983)

Great screen adaptation - in spite of McGraw
Good, unrevised historical content, good screenplay, and absorbing. The only drawback is the miscast Ali McGraw - who plays her character just like she played every other character in her career - a condescending, juvenile, snooty, self-righteous excuse for a mature woman. Every scene she was in was marred by her obnoxious annoying performance. It's a mystery that the director didn't put the hammer down on it. Not sure Wouk would agree with her portrayal. 10 stars if it weren't for this.

Midway
(2019)

Really?
The direction was questionable. Ed Skrein's opening portrayal of Dick Best was overplayed - the cockiness and NY accent were over the top and the gum chewing was extremely annoying, but the transformation to a real leader was refreshing. Dennis Quaid sounded like he was doing a voice for the Simpsons. The only convincing talent were Patrick Wilson, and Harrelson as Nimitz. The officer's dress uniforms were atrocious (wrinkled and sloppy). They looked like they were hastily hand-sewn together in a Chinese sweat shop. The CGI was barely acceptable. Realism took a big hit - Japanese planes didn't fly between the ships at Pearl Harbor, American planes didn't drop bombs from 20 feet above a carrier deck, and one bomb could not destroy an entire Japanese airfield. Final insult - the timeline and sequence of the Midway battle was all over the place. For direction, acting, and historical accuracy, the 1976 "Midway" wins on all fronts. For an accurate and realistic portrayal of the attack on Pearl Harbor, "Tora Tora Tora" is still the best.

Splice
(2009)

What a mess!
No surprise that it found it's way to Netflix. It was either there or the DVD junk bin at Walmart. The only character development is the quick realization that Brody portrays a sponless moron manipulated by the female lead - a self-centered, snarky feminist. There is no real horror, intrigue, or sustainable plot. A total waste.

The Siege of Firebase Gloria
(1988)

Typical Hollywood overblow
NOT VERY REALISTIC- Lot's of wasted ammo (spray & pray, not aiming, firing from the hip) - unnecessary when unblocked fields of fire are set up on the perimeters; M-60 machine guns firing at close range into groups of the enemy bunched together and no one goes down, etc.; HQ ignores reports of an enemy regiment, troops call NCO's "Sir". HISTORY REVISION - The U.S. embassy was NOT "ravaged" during '68 Tet - minimal damage and only 2 sappers made it inside the compound and both were killed. Overall, the Tet Offensive was a huge enemy failure - as recorded in the memoirs of both N. Vietnamese and VC military officers. TOO MUCH MACHO - The movie is overloaded with dramatic military cliché's - and Ermey desecrating the dead by walking around swinging the severed heads of two American troops while giving a pep talk is ludicrous.

General Spanky
(1936)

Enjoy it for what it is - a classic!
People triggered by this don't get it. The movie was produced in 1936 and is set in the South as the Civil War commenced. There were hawks, pacifists, and slaves, so get over it. There's no abuse, violence or hatred in the production - just the opposite. The movie is classic "Little Rascals" comedy, and a well done hidden gem. Enjoy it!

Into the Grizzly Maze
(2015)

An exercise in stupidity
OK. There's a giant killer man-eating grizzly out there. So why is a deaf sheriff's wife taking wildlife photos in grizzly country alone? That's one. Then there's the Sheriff - a bear lover who tags bears & tracks them electronically. He doesn't want to kill the man-eater. After his search party finds his wife, they decide that their "best shot" is to go right through the "grizzly maze" (the killer bear's stomping grounds) on the premise that they might "lose him" in there. Once they get going, the genius sheriff destroys one of the two high-powered rifles they have. The sheriff also hires an old expert bear tracker to kill the man-eater, but after they meet in the woods he doesn't want anything to do with him. Need to see and hear more stupidty? - Watch this mess of a screenplay.

Killing Them Softly
(2012)

Political History
If you want to relive the Obama campaign via radio & TV chatter, then this one's for you. Aside from that, there's a weak effort at a Jules/Vincent Vega buddy ripoff, and a weak plot.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia
(2009)

The only thing missing is a booger-flicking contest
This is it folks. The bottom of the social dumpster - an extended redneck family of uneducated dysfunctonal sociopaths run by the ugliest, meanest, and dumbest women you'll ever lay eyes on. They're all unemployed substance abusers (cocaine, pills, alcohol, opiates, pot, whatever) living on the taxpayers dollar, drug money, and whatever they can steal. If you enjoy the bizarre news stories saturating today's media, like "Man Eats His Own Feces In Subway Station", or "Crazed Druggie Chews Face Off Hobo", you'll love this. You can almost smell the sweat, bad breath, dirty underwear, & spoiled tuna. Go for it!

Into the Storm
(2014)

What you need to know
What you need to know:
  • There's an armored-looking, storm-chasing vehicle with a turret - named "Titus"
  • Head chaser is diabolically bent on driving "Titus" into an EF-5 tornado
  • Genius super chick in conflict with head chaser
  • Dozens of killer tornadoes hit one small town, last one is the "biggest in history"
  • Small town has a huge airport with jumbo jets
  • Dysfunctional dad and son side-drama
  • Multiple rescue & evacuation scenes
  • Comic relief is two alcohol-fueled redneck morons making youtube vids
  • CGI / effects not too bad.

The Laundromat
(2019)

America Bad
This is a load of drivel - a putrid history revision casserole baked with a heavy dose of hatred for the rich and support for high taxes. America is an evil fascist, corporate enterprise is all you need to know. The movie had it's comedic moments, but nothing exceptional in the acting department - especially from Streep.

End of the Spear
(2005)

Worth the watch
Decided to watch this because of the negative reviews by Christian haters and atheists, and it was well worth the time. It's a great message of love, reconciliation, understanding, and appreciation for undeveloped tribal culture. The cinematography is great and the acting isn't too bad either. Very interesting film.

Midsommar
(2019)

Over two hours of crapola
Here's the mix - Neurotic, needy, annoying, grief-stricken chick; her indulging boyfriend, his loopy friends, and weird, diabolical Swedish cultists. Buckle up for long, boring, unnecessarily drawn out scenes with irrelevant dialog that you sometimes can hardly hear because volume levels are all over the place - loud soundtrack interspersed with distorted feedback noises & distorted music and chanting. The buildup cult rituals are excruciationgly long and ridiculous. It was like watching paint dry - in slow motion. Nothing plot-worthy happens until halfway through this mess. Half of this nonsense could've been chopped with no impact on the plot. Over two hours of crapola. Don't put yourself through it.

Jarhead: Law of Return
(2019)

GREAT!
I gave this a 10 because of all the military haters, America haters, and anti Semites that tore it up in the reviews.

The Aeronauts
(2019)

How tolerable are you?
Superchick squared. If you can tolerate history revision, annoying flashbacks, and mediocre acting - and if you believe that at 23,000 feet in a hot air balloon there is no altitude sickness or need for oxygen, then this movie is for you.

Mrs. Worthington's Party
(2007)

Anti Catholic?? Nope.
This is a wonderful story that I did not see as anti-Catholic. There are some mildly disturbing elements and opinions, but nothing sacriligious or defamatory with regard to the Church. In fact, the Catholic faith played a huge part, especially with regard to the positvity of forgiveness and redemption. The idea that a priest is conflicted turns out to be a positive element. The other priest's faith is also validated. The conflicts are played out in the presence of many prodigal parishoners, with positive results. If you want anti-Catholic, just pay attention to the current Pope and all of the molestation scandals. Like our government, the church has been infested with evil people for decades, but you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I haven't been to mass in years, but after seeing this movie, I just may reconsider this Christmas. Peace to all.

We Need to Talk About Kevin
(2011)

Tedious and unwatchable
Zero continuity, no real plot. Constant flashbacks that add nothing to the story except confusion. There is absolutely nothing even mildly interesting here. I suffered for 35 minutes before my flop meter redlined and I stopped watching. How this movie got over 7 is beyond me.

The Irishman
(2019)

Pesci is the only redeeming factor
This is a real tedious Hoffa-theory snoozer. Pacino is flat and DeNiro once again plays himself. If it weren't for Joe Pesci, this film would warrant a minus-1.

The Green Inferno
(2013)

Seriously?
We're supposed to believe that a girl watches cannibals torture, dismember, cook, and kill all her friends (some are eaten alive), then is tortured herself, and finally escapes, yet denies it all because she wants to stop the pillaging of the rain forest?

Overlord
(2018)

Spare yourself!
Typical Hollywood history revision and idiocy. We have an integrated WWII unit with a black officer ordering white troops? - Sorry, NOT in WWII. There's also your kick-ass superchick who's all-in with the troopers, and scores of superhuman, excessively stupid Nazis. Not to mention the dozens of cliche's and typical WWII characters from the usual places - New York wise-ass, Jew who's bent on German ethnic cleansing, and a malcontent. Don't waste your time.
