The Idol
(2023)

A Misguided Glorification of Exploitation
The Idol is an uncomfortable viewing experience that seems intent on pushing boundaries for the sake of it, rather than providing any profound commentary on the music industry or female experiences within it. It presents a gross mishmash of lewd sex scenes and graphic content, most of which feel more like cheap, sensationalist tactics rather than necessary plot devices.

The plot focuses on Jocelyn, an aspiring pop idol, and her relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader, Tedros. While this could be an interesting premise to explore the manipulation and exploitation in the music industry, the execution is truly icky and gross. Rather than offering a nuanced critique, the show seems to amplify the very aspects of the industry it should be dissecting.

Adding to this is the glaring fact that the show's helm is predominantly manned by men, namely creators The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson. This male-dominated perspective could explain the lack of understanding and sensitivity towards deeply female subjects and experiences. It would have been beneficial to include a woman's perspective in the creative process when attempting to tackle a narrative so centered on women's experiences.

In summary, the show feels like a missed opportunity to provide meaningful commentary on the music industry and its treatment of women. Instead, it falls into the trap of perpetuating the harmful stereotypes and exploitative practices it should be critiquing. One would expect a show in 2023 to have a more evolved, nuanced perspective but this show lacks any sensitivity, depth, and is overall repulsive and creepy.

The Silent Sea
(2021)

Gripping series. Keeps you on the edge of the seat until the very end.
I really liked the atmosphere of this show. The episodes just flew by because of how engrossing this show is. The show holds the viewers until the very last scene.

The performances are all really well done and visual effects are quite good. This series definitely sets a benchmark for all the stories that happen on desolate space stations.

Yasuke
(2021)

Beautiful fresh take on anime. Amazing music!
Yasuke, what should I say is maybe one the best shows I saw which encapsulated a whole adventure journey in just 6 episodes. I binged watched this show in a single settings and the time just flew by to make me wanting more of this stellar show. The characters, magic, robots and of course the samurai action is all well crafted with amazing animation. The most stand out thing was the show's soundtrack. I enjoyed it so much that I am planning to rewatch it again with friends soon.

Like any show lately which shows any inch of diversity, this show's rating too is run down by the bots. Yasuke's 6 star rating just does not justify its material. Did I even watch the same show as any of these penny pinching reviewers?

To say the least, just watch it and decide for yourself! If you are an anime fan, like the samurai action or enjoy adventures, this show has all of it and more. Here's to hoping the directors and producers of this awesome series grace us with a season two!

Cheers.

The Irregulars
(2021)

Its an interesting and well acted show to come on Netflix in a long while. Bots are targeting this show with bad reviews for reasons we all know.
Irregulars is really good. Its a weekend binge delight. The characters are well acted, storylines are really interesting. The whole cast has done an outstanding job to transport viewers in Victorian London. Thaddea Graham's Bea steals the show for me.

The trolls and bots have clearly targeted this show, like so many others which tried to show a diverse past with multicultural characters.

The Comey Rule
(2020)

An important, well-acted, beautifully choreographed show.
This show is a must watch. It is very well acted with great performances from Jeff Daniels, Brendan Gleeson, Holly Hunter and many other notable actors and actresses. The direction and pacing of the show is also well done. The show is based on Jim Comey's book A Higher Loyalty, so it included many personal and intimate situations from his time during the unfolding of these events. The low ratings are of course from the same individuals/bots who target other shows as well which promote any truth or diversity in the Trump Era.

Dollface
(2019)

A lovable show. Don't let the PC culture ruin good things.
Well acted, well written and a beautifully directed. I really love this show. It was so fresh, colorful and humorous. I really don't get all the bad reviews. Not all art has to be a political statement. Regardless, I know a majority of people agree with me when I say that this is a great Kat Dennings and Brenda Song show. Hoping for a new season!

Marriage Story
(2019)

Lets get real, this movie is unbearable and nothing more than few emotional extended monologues.
I have seen many movies, I don't see how this is any more unique or inventive than the rest of them. Its a drama about a divorce. Its well acted and put together, but that is all there is to it. Nothing new or refreshing. Maybe it resonates with older audience, but being young and not gone thorough an experience of divorce, it was an unbearable journey and I felt like exiting this movie multiple times and watching something else more exciting on Netflix. I stayed on just for Scarlet and Laura.

The King
(2019)

A Fresh Take on Henry V
Its a very well made film. The story, characters and cinematography is woven magnificently. Don't compare this movie to this and that done in the past including Shakespeare. It stands on its one and is a fresh take on Henry V and his legacy.

Watchmen
(2019)

Best on TV right now. Trolls are driving the rating down.
Amazing world building. Solid storytelling. Great characters. The best show running on TV right now. Clearly a many (white) people are rattled by the honest take on racism and brutality in this show. IMDB should also check on the fake accounts directed to drive down the ratings of this show, which have happened to other shows as well dealing with the similar race issues. Overall, I am glad HBO decided to make this show. It is one of the very best I have seen from them mere two episodes in. Great work.
