The Boss Baby: Family Business
(2021)

I enjoyed it.
Not sure what people were expecting from this. Sure the first one was good but so is this one. The animations aren't simple but top notch and portray the moments well. It's hilarious most times and touching with a message that a lot of people did not pick up because they were too busy hating or comparing it to the previous movie. The girl's singing is realistic, it's actually unrealistic to expect them to sing like super pop stars at that age especially when she couldn't get the right tune due to stage fright previously.

Villain could use more depth and conviction but it's a family friendly movie, what do you expect?

All in all, it was a very delightful watch, the whole film was bursting with energy and all the voice actors were great. Animations definitely take the cake as usual. My favourite character from all that was probably Tina.

The Tomorrow War
(2021)

It's okay...
But it's no Edge of Tomorrow, where the plot actually makes sense and you are invested in the two main characters. Giving a 6 because of the CGI and action scenes.

As pointed out by others, there are plot holes everywhere. Putting the concept of time travel in any movie is often a move that could easily go wrong if the script are not being looked at closely to iron out any redundancies.

In this case, there are some redundancies, but the main issues are the characters' decisions as common sense seem void.

Why do they travel back in time to recruit for sacrifices when they can just prevent the invasion from starting or do their research in the past in the first place?

Why go biological when physical impacts or fire are far more effective in doing mass damage? Especially when they are immobile?

Why can't the future Muri wear a bracelet for herself? Almost as if she chose to die.

Also if Chris already travelled to the future and remained there, where did the other copy of Chris came from that left the family and died? Wouldn't it be more realistic if the daughter grew up without ever seeing her dad after he travelled to the future? Though I feel like the concept of meeting your future self and vice versa is always flawed right from the start, especially if they are in the same universe. But this paradox is so overly used in films.

Either way, it's just another alien shoot them up movie. Don't expect anything deep from it. I'm however still a sucker for sci fi actions and did enjoy it.

Occupation: Rainfall
(2020)

Mediocre Sci-Fi Movie
Current IMDB score of 5.4 is not too far away from the mark. I'd say it's around 4 to 5.5ish if I really push it. It's a very generic sci fi flick that doesn't aspire to be something greater or deeper than your typical shoot em up where all aspects of the story are skimmed through so you aren't really invested in any of them except staring at action scenes after action scenes.

Out of everything I thought the coolest thing was the alien queen's armor. Some parts of CGI were well made but it was generally inconsistent and towards the poorer side. I think with a budget of 25 million AUD they could've done better, perhaps take out a few action scenes but flesh out the rest and of course the script. But I enjoyed it nevertheless as I knew what to expect.

Wonder Woman 1984
(2020)

Not as great as the first one.
That said, I am hardly a fan of any DC or Marvel super hero movies. They are all just rinse and repeat plots with sprinkles of dazzling actions (nearly fell asleep in Avengers: Endgame which managed to drag on for 3 hours and people were saying it was too short). I do not expect much depth from any at all.

First WW was more coherent and complete while the sequel seem like a 'filler' that did not contribute much to the overall character. But then I have yet to see any super hero movies that brings enough depth to any character. The good part of this movie is that it brings forth some relatively great moral questions (which was unfortunately not fully developed) that explore humankind's selfishness/desires vs their ultimate priorities and revelation. I found that relatively inspiring on top of a few heart warming moments in the movie.

Gal Gadot is a charming actress but I think her performances and expressions fell flat when compared to who WW could have been. There were also a few scenes where she seemed uncomfortable (especially during the cockpit scene) Ultimately I believe she is not the best choice for WW.

I watched it with the expectation of what I would for any superhero movie - more style over substance so I was not impressed nor disappointed. It is just another movie in the money making franchise.

Definitely not a 1 or 2 though, you just don't rate everything so low and say everything sucks. It is also nowhere close to being the worst superhero movie. Unless you have only seen very few.

Dolittle
(2020)

5.6 on IMDB? Too low!
People need to remember that RDJ can portray charismatic and eccentric characters well (Sherlock for example) and many others. Type-casting actors to specific roles in a specific franchise will only limit their potential and our enjoyment. I never once assumed that he will speak like Iron Man in this movie.

Movie was extremely enjoyable. It is what you would expect from an animal talking family friendly movie. CGI was great and did not stand out as fake that take away the viewer's enjoyment. It has the right amount of warmth, adventure and comedy to make it an overall balanced experience.

If you are wondering if you should watch it, do it. It is a movie you cannot really hate.

Hua pi 2
(2012)

Basically a replica of Hua pi 2008
And with the same main cast. The plot is almost identical, same actor and actress casted in a very similar love relationship and the demon tried to mingle in between them, ultimately making the sacrifice (though the ending is different from the first). There is however literally nothing new to see here except with the addition of extra CGI and more cost heavy battle scenes, which at parts were totally unnecessary and did not add much to the overall depth of the plot.

You can get a decent kick out of them if you watch it now and then. But nothing ground breaking.

Mulan
(2020)

Mulan does not have to be a Disney animation replica and it works just fine.
First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Although it does have its high and lows.

Mulan is a historical figure. The stories can be told as seen fit instead of having to follow the footsteps of the Disney animation. I actually prefer this version of Mulan without all the unnecessary humor from the dragon sidekick, the cricket (as an insect) and the romance scenes.

That being said. I wished they had followed through with the realism and hence here are aspects of the movie which could have been improved.

#1 Fancy VFX that was not necessary and only added to the cringe factor. While the battle actions were great and one that remotely resembles 'wu sha' films, the witch and the phoenix with its plastic/kite looking tail was completely not necessary and did not add much to the plot. Instead they could focus more on Mulan's growth and the battle scenes (which by the way lack any tactics whatsoever)

#2 Westernization of the dialogues. Although I understand that targeting the western audience makes bigger bucks in most of the cases, it hindered the overall experience of the movie. The three pillar of virtue for example could have been described in much more in depth if the movie was spoken in Mandarin instead of English. It just made the whole movie seem that bit shallower.

All in all, decent and enjoyable watch. Not as bad as some of the reviews make out to be.

Rogue
(2020)

Not sure how much the actress had input in this but..
Direction and script were the weakest part here, it was like a feminist/animal rights activist patching together a bunch of random sequences and calling it a film. As much as the message in the film is grand, the movie did not do it justice.

Hostages were extremely annoying but somehow managed to survive in the middle of a gun fight by just standing out there in the open and the lioness, an added afterthought to promote feminism the way I see it, just happen to kill the villains (twice) in order to not end the movie early. What's more, it feels like the characters in the film were just making stupid irrational decisions to again, promote feminism (when the girls decide to run out into the middle of a gunfight and that over exaggerated shout scene towards Pata).

The next weakest thing would probably be VFX. Those blood mists made the film look really cheap, so were some of the muzzle flashes. Lioness herself was passable as a CGI however.

Megan Fox was always clean and unhurt when her teammates were in tatters. It is however good to see a female lead role that is not used to support a male lead and in my opinion her acting was passable in this film. I believe she does have the potential for niche lead roles if the direction and script were better.

All in all 4/10. Nothing against feminism or animal rights activism if done right but there are structures to films to make deliveries impactful. Just because someone had a good message he or she want to deliver behind scenes does not make it good or significant if it was made with such poor thought.

Underwater
(2020)

Could have been a lot better
I will not be comparing this film to others like Aliens. Aliens is by no means an original film. Its concept is likely inspired or copied from older films or literature. So saying such film copy another 'copy' from another film and so on and so forth is meaningless.

This film could have been great if there were more character developments or a more wholesome script or direction. It felt like we were thrown into the midst of a long but typical escape-from-creature 'sequence' and that was all there is to it.

The cast choices were quite poor. While Kirsten Stewart is somewhat suitable for a strong female protagonist role (with perhaps a degree of apathy), the lack of facial expressions (mainly fear) erases a lot of the urgency and tension from the scenes. But even so, I still find her overall acting quite decent in this film and it is not far fetched to say that she did carry some bits of this film to some degree (especially towards the end). But then again, it probably would have been better if the role was given to another actress.

T.J. Miller on the other hand was totally unsuitable for this role, either him or how they dictate his character to be. You want to set the theme/mood towards a certain direction in order for the audiences to immerse in it. Adding a clown into the middle of a supposedly tense and horror film will not make it better.

Best part of the film is undoubtedly the creatures themselves, the destruction, the suits and the environment so kudos to the VFX team. Though with most of the scenes being so dark we cannot marvel at all the digital assets produced.

All in all, a slightly weak direction and cast choice hindered this film's potential. It is still a decent one or two time watch if you are into such a genre and cheap thrills.

Jojo Rabbit
(2019)

Something different but fails to create any lasting impressions
This satirical comedy(?) is definitely an unique take to the war, through the eyes of a young boy. However, while Waititi's comedic touch was a welcoming addition to Thor Ragnarok, it did not work so well in this film.

Due to its outrageous but family friendly tone which keeps jumping from one to another, I find it hard to approach this film in the right manner to perhaps get the most out of it. It felt like the film was trying to find the fine balance between solemnity and comedy throughout but never achieved it. This inconsistency made me invest in the main characters less and made me wonder if there was indeed any hidden story morals at all to take out from.

That being said, this film has strong casts, with Scarlet and Roman standing out the most. So kudos to them.

The whole atmosphere of this film feels more like a spin off or an abridged version of something greater, I feel like it is too casual and forced for its own good, especially when related to the second world war.

All in all, a good popcorn flick with a somewhat heart warming ending with a message or two. By no means the over hyped masterpiece that others make it out to be in my opinion. Chances are you will either like it or not depending on your take on its tone.

Misutâ Ron
(2017)

A beat to death sub-genre, or is it?
About 6.5 for me, round it up to 7.

First off. This isn't really an action film. The whole action sequence probably only lasted for like 5 to 10 minutes. So if you are in solely for the bloodshed, combat and violence then you would probably find this film to be long and boring.

This movie takes its time to develop its characters, especially the protagonist. It is a story that shows the human side of an otherwise professional assassin.

There are a few aspects of this movie that could have been improved on. A few of the scenes dragged on for too long, mainly the starting scene with the bunch of guys talking and the 'acting competition?'. The other issue was the soundtrack which I felt was a bit off during the chase and during some of the combat scenes. A smaller issue was that the ending felt rushed but I had no complaints there as the bulk of the movie was invested in character connections.

It is a heart wrenching and heart warming movie at the same time. Definitely not just your typical action flick. Would have been closer to a masterpiece if there was an even heavier focus on protagonist's personal growth on top of his daily casual interactions with the locals, but that's probably asking too much.

Some compare this to John Wick but to me, while their motives may be somewhat similar, John Wick focuses more on the action side of things while Mr.Long on the character itself. As such, I found that this movie offers more depth compared to John Wick.

Definitely worth a watch and deserves more recognition.

Abigail
(2019)

A stunning visual and audio piece that eventually fails to deliver
I am a fan of steampunk and fantasy so I decided to give this a try. Without a doubt, the CGI and music score are on point and add vibrant layers to the surreal setting. It was indeed an eye candy from the ship's designs to the magical trails.

It would have been a very enjoyable masterpiece if only they would have picked the right actors for the job, opted out from using voice overs and refined the script further.

The only actor shouldering this whole movie performance wise is Eddie Marsen. His performance in his role is amazing, portraying the loving, wise and eccentric father of Abigail.

Not much can be said for the other actors as they appear emotionless given their roles and it was hard to invest in any of the main characters.

After Eddie Marsen the best cast I would say was Marta Timofeeva and that's saying something.

5/10 for its stunning visuals and music pieces. If you are a fan of steampunk and a fantasy world and want to feast your eyes as such but don't care too much for a refined plot or acting, it is a worth a watch.

The Predator
(2018)

Not sure what viewers were expecting.
After seeing the ridiculous reviews/individual scores the film receives, I knew I had to watch it myself and hopefully bring some fairness to it. I have seen all predator movies (including the original one). To me the predator films are simply action flicks that involve the hunt, survival, gore and ultimately the death of the hunter. I was never a fan nor a hater of the franchise.

This apple of a film, apart from the cheesy and unnecessary adult humor, does not fall far from the tree. This is what I would expect out of the predator franchise. This film also expects you to already know what a predator is and proceeds straight into the action scenes.

For the action scenes, the CGI is decent and does not make the film less entertaining. Most people need to realize that CGI these days does not only involve space ships and aliens, most of the the 'realistic part' of the world can be composited and drawn using programs as well. It was clearly done by professionals and they did an okay job at it.

People who rate everything at the lowest score possible are either ignorant to the effort involved in making films like these or are just simply frustrated that the perfect script they had in mind after the original predator movie did not come into fruition.

All the predator and AVP series are mediocre at best. They make great popcorn flicks (including this one) but I would be reluctant to watch any of them on big screen. Still, if you have an open mind, enjoy action flicks and not a hardcore fan waiting eagerly for something similar to the first Predator movie. Give it a shot.

The Dawnseeker
(2018)

A B- movie at best
Dawnseeker looks like a project amateurs made to practise their VFX skills. To see such qualities for a 2018 movie is slightly shocking and disappointing.

There is not one aspect of this film that could potentially bring the score above a 3 or 4 for me. The special effects, animations, costumes, dialogues, acting and story line were all poor, not to mention cheap replicas of ideas from Star Wars, Predator, Halo and Blade Runner.

This movie proves that just because you have the assets to make one does not mean you should make one without thought. I believe the 5+ as an imdb score is a misrepresentation this movie.

3/10 for having a go at making a movie with some plot.

Extinction
(2018)

It is what it is and no, not a 1/10
As I always say. Always trust the meta score, and not the individual reviews. Extinction is at best, an average decent film, which is represented well by the imdb rating of 5 to 6/10. Sure, the kids' constant screams and cries may be annoying at certain parts, but that is pretty true to a child's emotion during such settings, so I have decided to overlook that part.

The reason it's not higher than 6 for me is that it's not particularly memorable. The movie felt like it was only portraying a short event instead of a story with depth and character developments. The movie basically played it safe with ideas that easily made sense and and then topped it up with some action scenes.

It's however still worth a watch.

Kung Fu Traveler
(2017)

Trust the general IMDB rating, not the individual reviews.
This film has been given such a poor and unfair review that I feel compelled to bring some fairness to it. It is definitely not a 1/10. People who rated this 1/10 either did not pay attention to the story, understood the language or simply disliked the CGI so much to be able to provide an unbiased review.

The CGI isn't top notch, but it's not bad either. It's about the level of a decent B+ listed movie. The story is what drives this movie. It's about a robot learning how to be human, incorporating human emotions into kung fu and ultimately, the art of taking oneself out of the equation, all to save the human race and the ones he cared about.

The story could have had more depth, but the action packed scenes make it an overall solid 6/10 for me.

This movie is partially sci-fi with the majority of the movie being more of a martial arts/action film. It is also true that if you don't speak mandarin, you will not get as much enjoyment out of the subtitles as a native speaker.

But in the end, it's worth a watch, and in my case, a re-watch.

Coco
(2017)

Solid entertainment.
Is it legendary? Is it a game changer? Perhaps not. But it was certainly a memorable watch and deserves a solid 8/10.

The movie brings several ideas we are familiar with to life, through the use of vibrant visuals and audio. I was stunned by how pretty and detailed the 'city of the dead' looked, I have never seen such detail in other Pixar films.

All in all, this movie expresses the familiar tear jerking formula to its entirety. It is suitable for all ages and definitely worth a watch with your family.

Shingeki no kyojin: Endo obu za wârudo
(2015)

Summation of part 1 and 2
By now the audiences would know that if they are here for a close adaptation of the anime/manga, they will not get what they want. I have only seen the anime and was not much of a fan (especially season 2). But I did not hate it that much either.

Part 2 strayed quite far from the original concept, even more so than part 1. The setting was considerably different in the movie, leading to different transportation methods, weapons and characters.

This movie basically takes all the chess pieces presented in the original manga/anime; gives them new identities and appearances and then mixes the story up to their own preference.

To sum up, apart from the huge span in era from pre-WW1 to WW2 to post 2000s and that white room which did not fit at all, it was still quite a pleasant watch as far as mindless action flicks (with some story) goes.

This movie will require the audiences to have some knowledge of the anime/manga to fill in the gaps and it will definitely need audiences loyal to the original franchise to keep an open mind to enjoy it.

Life
(2017)

Not so bad as some had pointed out.
First off, I would like to say that if you are someone who writes a review based on your emotional experience throughout a film or uses another movie as an anchor point for comparison and ratings, then I do not find such ratings reliable.

I won't be comparing this to other sci-fi movies as they are each on their own. But lets get started.

This movie kept me at the edge of my seat throughout, partly because I was expecting such experiences for a horror/thriller genre. I certainly found this movie enjoyable overall, with the right amount of tension, suspense and a few memorable scenes. There were some jump scares but none so sudden to the extent that they would fling you off your seat. The setting was believable, along with the 'tools available' in such settings (no guns or lasers).

However, if there is one thing coming from other reviewers that I do agree with it would be the unprofessional-ism of the astronauts and the slightly unrealistic life form itself. Though it could be argued that being a more advanced life form comes with increased resilience to deprivation of life supports.

It would also be perfectly natural for trained professionals to act in an emotional and irrational way (perhaps not as easy as portrayed in the movie) when in a never before seen predicament.

All in all a 6/10, it is decent and worth a watch if you go in with an open mind instead of looking for realism or comparing it to Alien. Would have been a bit better if the characters and the life form were a bit more believable.

Under the Skin
(2013)

Not for everyone
This is perhaps the first time I have been let down by the review scores. As some others had pointed out, the scenes dragged on for too long, with some scenes having in my opinion serving not much function at all, such as the extended dashboard scene; the start of the movie; and when she looked into the rear view mirror. Basically the first half of the movie was her in her van driving. Whilst I agree some scenes should be extended to build up suspense, tension, thoughts etc others were slightly excessive, you don't really need her to pick up so many victims to understand what was going on. The movie could have explored and focused on her change a bit more instead.

I understand that this movie relates to a book closely, and divides the viewers as a result. For people who have read the book, this would appear to be a masterpiece compared to people who have not read it, who would then find it confusing and boring.

This movie targets specific audiences, if you have not read the book, hate scenes that dragged on or do not have an open mind before you start the movie, you will most likely find the experience unpleasant and vice versa.

Transcendence
(2014)

Too much hate than it deserves
First time writing a review. I'm not your informative critic, and I don't compare films, I take them for what they are.

I feel that this movie deserves a lot more than currently given. I also understand that people with different religious beliefs, view points, expectations or people making comparisons to other films may be disappointed.

The ideas were certainly realistic and had a lot of potential. The film presented the ideas relatively well with decent direction and cinematography. We were left to choose a side we believe in, instead of being ushered to a conclusive philosophy.

The reason I only give it a 7/10 (i.e pretty good) is due to the fact that the plot did fall short in the developmental department. It was great, but the ideas were only briefly touched on, and with our great AI willing to sacrifice everything for love in the end, despite not showing much affection/emotion throughout the film. It certainly felt like they added the concept of 'misunderstanding' just to have a happy ending. At least from my point of view.

Not to mention the lack of explanation on the deeper motives behind the supposedly villain-turn-saviors, or perhaps explain their moral standpoint on why it was okay to kill people working on different believes but not with an AI that's trying to heal the world.

All it all, it was a great film, I would certainly recommend people to watch it and then decide for themselves. It does touch on a few realistic future dilemmas and the ideas that provokes thought.
