Boo, Bitch
(2022)

The first few episodes are rough, but it gets much better after that
I'm a 50 year old man. Not quite the target demo for this show. I nearly turned it off after the first 20 minutes, but I was surprised when I realized I'd made it through four episodes. This show isn't going to win any awards, but when it's over, you'll be glad you stuck with it. The cast is good enough, I don't care that most them are well into their 20s and playing teenagers, and plot holes don't matter. Just have fun watching it!

Foundation
(2021)

Ignore the haters and just enjoy it!
Based on these other reviews, it seems that if you read Asimov's original books, this series is automatically beneath you. Maybe it's not a complete replica of the original material, or maybe you just need to be indignant because you believe that you're some kind of scholar of classic sci-fi literature.

I have not read the books this show is based on, and I don't feel the need to. And after giving up on For All Mankind (yawn) and Invasion (super yawn), I found that Foundation is exactly what I was looking for. I don't feel the need to dissect and criticize every event like some reviewers here. I just completed watching Season 1, and I enjoyed it for what it is: a big story with amazing visual effects and interesting plot lines that are interconnected.

The glut of 1-star reviews here is ridiculous, but don't let that dissuade you from watching Foundation. Give it a chance and just watch it for the purpose of being entertained. I think it's a good show. And if you also think it's good, don't let any sci-fi snobs tell you otherwise.

Black Hawk Down: The Untold Story
(2019)

Walk a mile in their shoes ... if you manage to live that long
I'm sure this show has been heavily edited, but one thing is clear: These guys have bigger balls than anyone who would dare to comment otherwise in this forum. I'm not a typically a flag-waving "patriot," but hats off to these brave souls. Had I been in their shoes, I would have soiled myself before firing a single shot.

Alien Worlds
(2020)

Science-based science fiction
This series is mainly for science nerds, and not so much for sci-fi nerds in search of eye candy.

The idea behind Alien Worlds is to take what we know of science on Earth, combine it with observations of how living things on Earth adapt to survive different environments, and then adjust the variables (mainly climate and habitat) to guess at how life might evolve on other planets with heavier gravity, extreme temperatures, etc.

So to those who are complaining about all the Earth stuff in this show, you really missed the point. A certain amount of this series is absolutely science fiction, but it was imagined with real science in mind. And that real science is explained by actual human scientists who go into why this species looks this way and why that species has developed that weird behavior.

The Earth science is all very necessary for justifying the design of the imagined creatures that could be inhabiting other planets.

Overall, I enjoyed this series but I wasn't blown away by it. It was just an interesting series of what-ifs.

American Horror Story: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
(2017)
Episode 2, Season 7

Omg enough with the screaming and freakouts
Horror shows have a lot of screaming, I get it. But horror screaming is fun because people are getting slaughtered. This episode (and the one before it) is just one extremely annoying woman screaming her guts out because she can't stop imagining clowns are chasing her. Even her wife says she can't take it anymore.

This season so far is just irritating.

The Irishman
(2019)

It's Scorsese, so it's automatically legendary?
If this film had been directed by anyone else, it's rating would be far lower and nobody would be raving about it the way they are here.

The Irishman is an interesting piece of history, but as a film this thing is pretty slow. 3.5 hours is a long, long time to watch these events unfold. Scorsese did it in his signature way, but there's no way in hell I would rewatch this the way I would Goodfellas, Casino, or The Departed.

One Strange Rock
(2018)

Will Smith ... WHY????
This is clearly a big-budget production. The camera work is amazing and they have a full cast of actual astronauts who provide their own perspectives on the science of life. That's all great. And then, inexplicably, Will Smith starts running his mouth.

I like Will Smith as an actor, but he doesn't belong in this thing. He brings no authority to the topics being discussed, and it mostly sounds like he's talking to a child. Like he's trying to convince his 9-year-old son that science is cool. Maybe that's the intention? Who knows.

I don't think a series like this needs Will-Smith-level star power. Yes, charisma matters, but I'd say it's more important to have someone you can take seriously. Will Smith just drags this show down.

Alita: Battle Angel
(2019)

Don't analyze the script, just enjoy it for what it is: an action movie with a very likeable heroine and great VFX
I'm a 47 year old man who went to film school. I loved this movie. There's no point in trying to dissect what Alita: Battle Angel got right or wrong in terms of script or pacing or character development or whatever else film snobs like to blather on about. This is just a fun, action-packed first installment of what I hope will at least be a trilogy, if not more. And they couldn't have cast Alita more perfectly, even if her on-screen form is completely digital. Great movie. Tons of fun. Don't overthink it.

The Shannara Chronicles
(2016)

Kevin Sorbo should be in this, and no, that's not a compliment
I'm an American, and it's painfully clear that American-style dialogue and pronunciation sound really, really dumb in the fantasy realm. It somehow cheapens the whole thing, and this Shannara series already feels cheap to begin with.

I had high hopes for this series, but after watching three full episodes it's pretty clear that they poured all of their budget into visual effects and exotic locations and skimped everywhere else. A couple of the actors are ok, but other performances are just cringe-worthy. And the writing? Eww.

I think this series will please the Kevin Sorbo fan club demographic, but if you're expecting a LOTR or GoT-like experience, prepare to be underwhelmed.
