Too Close
(2021)

Outstanding work
A really excellent short series featuring superb central performances and cruel and exotic twists at every turn. Superb dialogue - realistic and biting. Not sure why people are criticising the pace - it's increasingly rare to find a series that can wrap a story up successfully in under 8 episodes :-). This felt like the perfect pace for a gripping story.

The main characters plight is revealed in extraordinary layers, with her first appearance as an in likeable privileged inhuman zombie giving way to a deeper understanding of the pressures and mental state that led to her breakdown.

I would watch it again just to see the subtle clues that I missed the first time.

Finding Alice
(2021)

Weak
Watched hopefully because of the cast, all of whom are usually wonderful, but 4 episodes in I am looking at my phone more than my screen. So far all potential twists and mysteries have turned out to be NOT twisty or mysterious.

Did he really just fall down the stairs? Yes. Apparently he did. Just so they could make a joke about no bannisters in modern houses.

Is the boy who says he is a son from the previous marriage really that? Yes, he is. And he doesn't want anything, so no trouble there.

Add to this the improbable and simpering home burial and you have a bizarre, unlikable hodge podge.

I will continue to the end in the hope that something gripping happens, but more because this falls into the 'so bad it's fascinating' category.

Hello to Jason Issacs.

A wonderful surprise
Caught this on Christmas television and was delighted and charmed by it. A talented voice cast, good jokes and satisfying pay-offs. Great for kids and grownups who are kids.

Amazing
Laugh out loud new comedy. I casually sat down for an episode and watched both series solidly.

Watch it :-)

Charming leads, give it the benefit of the doubt
Plot holes and unlikely shootiness in London Town but rescued by the two leads. Charming, funny lads with entertaining banter and imperfect private lives. I think I will stick with it.

Doctor Who: Orphan 55
(2020)
Episode 3, Season 12

What happened ?
Wow, I've only just started watching doctor who again and the first 2 eps of this series were pretty good but then this happened! Terrible dialogue, poor acting and poor writing undermined some cool monsters and a climate message that could have had some impact if it hadn't been wrapped up in the rest of the episode.

I turned off and deleted it and then came back and watched on fast forward to the end, to see if there was any sting in the tail that helped make sense of the rest of it. There wasn't.

2 for monsters

Mortal Engines
(2018)

Steampunk heaven, scriptwriters hell
Heaps of cool techy backdrops and effects here all undermined by a dreadful script. Some of the lines are straight out of a simpsons take off. I offer the terminator-style foster parent who answers an orphan's question with "it has no heart, like me", before later grinding to a halt with the line "you ....love....him?".

The whole thing has a doctor who-ness about it, but without any of the fun of that show. Pity.

Ghostbusters
(2016)

Much better than IMDBers had suggested.
I was expecting not to like this given the terrible reviews here but I am delighted to report that I really enjoyed it. Loveable characters, some laugh out loud lines, a good baddie and great cameos by old favorites. I know there was a lot of outrage from original fans which may have warped perception of this film but it's a long long way from the '1's that people are gleefully awarding it. Treat it as a new film and have some fun with it.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
(2018)

Thank goodness for the ABBA songs
This is a so-so movie with a superb cast and soundtrack. The plot puddles along and is barely significant. The junior versions of the original cast are charming and engaging Cher is flatter than I expected but a welcome performer. Worth a watcxh but I'll just listen to the soundtrack.

King of Thieves
(2018)

True to real life but slow because of that
A great cast that make a good attempt to keep a weak script alive. I think it's probably very true to real events but limps along because of that. Given a go at the editing booth I would have cropped the heist itself right down and made more drama of the police efforts to apprehend the crooks. Loved seeing Michael Caine in classic crim mode but even he was underused. Worth a watch but could have been so much better.

Mirror Mirror
(2012)

A 10/10 from Julia.
At the heart of this jolly comedy is a 10/10 performance from Julia Roberts as the glamorous dry-witted evil queen which is enough to make this watchable in its own. It's overly long and the writing is a little baggy outside of the throne room, but it's a solid fairy-tale which entertains.

World War Z
(2013)

Smart, creepy with a satisfying payoff
Not a classic zombie movie but for all that it sets a good benchmark for the fact that they are super fast and dedicated to wiping out us mortals. Some gripping set pieces (the Jerusalem thing and the plane thing are edge of seat stuff) and a satisfying finale that sees our hero imperil himself to begin saving the world. Worth a watch.

Moon
(2009)

Real heart
A sci-fi with an unexpectedly touching human story at the heart of it. Sam Rockwell amazes with a solo performance that is quirky, detached and warm in turn. The computer is not the standard 2001 space odyssey baddie. Unexpected twists and turns have brought me back to this movie again and again.

Avril et le monde truqué
(2015)

Don't be put off by the lengthy exposition...
...at the start. The set up is a little long but establishes the foundations for a truly extraordinary alternate world of steam-punk machinery, walking houses and talking animals. Intriguing inventive animation for grown-ups with a delightful lead character.

House on Haunted Hill
(1959)

Who doesn't love some Vincent?
A classic Vincent price vehicle as the dodgy millionaire who entices a range of characters into a haunted house with the promise of reward if they spend the night. See any Simpsons treehouse of horror episode for the typical tropes but entertaining if you're after some retro horror.

There are some super-obvious plot contrivances which are entertaining in themselves. Without spoiling I did find myself thinking 'why would you still have one of those in the cellar', 'for goodness sake don't stand there' and 'being blind is one thing but that's not normal'

Anyway - good retro fun for a stormy evening. Mwohahaha etc.

The Beyond
(2017)

At least grammar check your script
Lots of potential wasted here. There are neat cgi and cyber-human tech but the writing is ploddingly dull and inept. I was constantly being snapped out of suspension-of-disbelief by words used incorrectly, either miswritten or not picked up by the director editor.

Mysteries are perplexing, not complexing. Things that live forever are immortal, not mortal. You rose through the rank, you didn't 'rised'.

And everyone is so faux detached and pseudoscientific. Little or no emotional connection to or from anybody.

Dull as a congressional hearing.

One Day
(2011)

Reasonable effort, poorly cast
Fine actors as they all are the casting let's the original story down. Em is supposed to be a down-to-earth socially inept plain Jane with a broad Yorkshire accent. By contrast Dexter is a posh kid, louche, slightly out of control. Neither actor really channels this. Ann Hathaway can't be disguised as plain just by putting a pair of spectacles on her, and her accent is as cut glass as dexter. Meanwhile D just appears sleepy. Not the clear distinction on which the book thrives.

Genuine laugh out loud
Too long, yes, but had me grinning start to finish and some serious laugh out loud moments. Great performances all round. Loved it.

Moonlight

A tough watch that will stay with me
I watched this In two sittings and was glad of the break. The three ages of the main protagonist all play their part excellently, and each in their own way shows a sadness and sense of being trapped with a secret that is unacceptable to the people around them, as a child, teenager and adult. Not a world that I've ever seen portrayed before which is why I think it is worthy of its accolades. This feels like an insider account of growing up gay in a tough neighbourhood.

Brooding, challenging and sad but well worth the watch.

The Space Between Us
(2017)

Contrived
A great premise with a some charming aspects of performance from Asa butterfield but otherwise a plot that needs a lot of contrived coinidences to make sense.

Convenient that the kid has some sort of magnetic tracker in his chest that also happens to override the door locks, not just on mars but also in earth's nasa headquarters. Also convenient that the apparent child genius on mars turns into a mr bean socially incapable idiot on earth. And when did nasa decide that the best content of a training module on "human sexuality" should be a clip from a 1950s movie?

Some entertainment and some charm but overall just too contrived to keep me on board.
