El año de la peste
(1979)

Slow but Interesting Mexican Thriller showcasing government cover-up
El Ano de La Peste "The year of the plague" shows the always interesting but scary premise of what would happen if a strange new disease popped up in a huge urban center with an incompetent and shady government trying to cover it up and thousands if not millions at risk.

People begin to fall mysteriously ill in Mexico City and only Dr Sierra Genoves seems to notice it. Hospitals are full of people with "bronchial pneumonia" but Dr Sierra fears its the dreaded Plague. He alerts the city and national government, his warnings falling on deaf ears: The government chooses to deny anything is wrong in the city of 18 million, while hundreds die each day.

At the end hundreds of thousands die in the capital city, including important foreign diplomats visiting the "plague free" city. Dr Sierra Genoves is left to walk the deserted streets full of trash and bodies as the President of Mexico declares "During my term there is not and will be not, a Pestilence." An interesting but sometimes slow paced thriller/drama that shows what can happen in a major city and possibly the world if a disease is not identified and stopped in time. The fate of man, rests on the shoulders of a few, ignorant individuals. Worth a check.

El fiscal de hierro
(1989)

fun movie
an action packed movie, El Fiscal de Hierro "THe Iron Prosecutor" is a fictionalized account of famous Mexico City lawman Salvador del Toro Rosales who was sent in the early 70's to lawless Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to clean up the city and rid it of the violence and drugs that plagued it then (and now). He fought against drug trafficking matriarch Simona Reyes Pruneda and her gang of bloodthirsty criminal sons.

In El Fiscal de Hierro, attorney Eduardo Lobo is sent to the city of Monterrey to battle the evil Ramona Pineda and her sons who commit all sorts of crimes. No bribes and no bullets can stop the mighty "Iron Prosecutor", even though his fight and dedication to his job costs him the life of his son at the hands of Pineda.

Cheesy acting and violent shootouts, typical of Mario Almada's movies, this movie is pretty enjoyable if you enjoy macho movies full of violence and butt kicking lawmen who never have to reload and their guns always have bullets!

The Fog
(2005)

Avoid at all costs
This movie was terrible. It tried way too hard, and wasn't scary at all. Had the obligatory dumb teens parading around clueless and in their underwear at some points, and the ending was horrible. They took a simple movie from the 80's and turned it into a complex mini epic horror tale, which at the end turns into a love story in a moronic way, for all those who see this, it will leave u saying "what the hell?". The old "The Fog" was a simple tale, ghosts of dead sailors coming back for the gold that was jacked from them, they kill a few people with hooks and such, movie ended, simple as that. This new one is filled with fire, flying glass, people being pushed around by 'unseen' forces, and way too many REALLY fake looking CGI ghosts. What happened to good Ole gory makeup and old tattered clothes? I suggest you guys check out the original The Fog before checking this out, or even better, save your money and wait for it to come on cable, or if you find 4 bucks somewhere, go rent it once it comes out...or don't see it at all
