Nine Days
(2020)

Food for thought
A very emotional film about all the nuances of life. The beauty, the hardships, happiness, loneliness, courtesy, carelessness, secrecy are all themes carefully entwined in this story of a gentle man selecting people to give them the ultimate gift of being born. He is also aware of the complexities one will face when going through life. Some people get through it easier and some struggle a lot more no matter how decent they are "I send flowers, and other people send pigs to eat them" is one of his quotes from the film which describes that perfectly. The performances are top notch, the photography simple but beautiful and emotion is high. It is hard not to think about Nine Days after watching it. It might make you reflect on your own life as well. Definitely recommended.

The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun
(2021)

Visually stunning but devoid of anything else
Wes Anderson is a master when it comes to visual aspects of the film and The French Dispatch is no exception. The cast is stellar as well. The problem is that it completely lacks emotion and the stories are not interesting enough to really draw you in. The same applies for the characters as well. For the last 30 minutes I was already completely disconnected from the film and barely made it to the final credits. I liked quite a lot of his previous work going all the way back to his debut Bottle Rocket but in my humble opinion The French Dispatch is one of his weakest works.

De uskyldige
(2021)

Dark, original. immersive and effective
Another treat from the writer of Thelma (2017) and Louder Than Bombs (2015). It is a slowburner but never loses suspense thanks to fluid direction, good cinematography and superb performances from the child actors. The premise is original and the atmosphere heavy and dark. A very interesting way to tackle the loss of innocence. If you like dark thrillers with supernatural elements, you should not miss this one.

Host
(2020)

Simple and effective
Simple premise, nothing original but well thought out and executed. The length of this film is perfect. At first we get introduced to characters and they actually seem like real people for a change and not just one-dimensional demon fodder. After that the film shifts a gear up and does not let go until the end. The acting is convincing and good and there are some well filmed creepy scenes as well. All in all it is an enjoyable flick and if you like this genre, give it a go.

Sputnik
(2020)

Solid
This is a solid sci-fi film. It is well made, well acted, builds up a mystrious atmosphere and the score nicely adds up to the feel of the story. It is a slowburner but the pace is well maintained throughout the film. The story itself is not that original and it is reminiscent of quite a few American films, most notably Alien and also The Thing but nevertheless has its own feel. The last part sparks some nice intrigue. I do not want to give anything away, but it will be interesting to see what other viewers will make out of the final few minutes and sentences of the dialogue. Overall, I thought it was a solid piece of film-making and if you love sci-fi that is not all about non-stop action and over the top CGI, you might be pleased with Sputnik.

Black Christmas
(2019)

92 minutes only nerves of steel will get you through
I simply cannot believe that this cinematic travesty bears the name of the classic original "Black Christmas" from 1974. Abysmal in every single aspect you can think of.

Columbus
(2017)

Every second and every frame of this film is simply beautiful
Another one of those gems that will never cease touching your heart and soul no matter how many times you see it. The characters are so real and the story is simple but dealing with complex human emotions. The pace is slow which works perfectly since it emphasises the inner struggle and the loneliness that the two main characters are dealing with. It also creates a nice atmosphere that slowly draws you in and does not let go easily for quite some time after watching. Another treat that Columbus offers is beautiful photography. There are so many scenes that you could pause and it would work great as a beautiful photograph. If you are into good, quiet and realistic stories, you will love this film.

Bohemian Rhapsody
(2018)

Worth a watch
Very entertaining and well made film. There is some Hollywood spice thrown in of course and certain things did not happen or happened differently in the real story. If you are a die hard fan you will definitely notice those things but it is important to remember that this is a film and not a documentary. The cast did a fantastic job, hats off to Rami Malek, it is not an easy job to portray such a legend and he did a very fine job. There is a nice balance between Freddie's private and intimate moments from his life and performances with the band. And there is plenty of great, beautiful, timeless Queen songs in it as well of course. All in all, watching this is enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who loves Queen or music in general.

Destination Wedding
(2018)

Witty and enjoyable
It is alwasy nice to come across a fresh take on a certain genre and Destination Wedding does that. The two main characters are quirky, pessimistic and share no joy when it comes to the rest of the human society. Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are great, the chemistry between them is perfect. I believe that the best feature of this film is the dialogue. It is witty, smart and listening to the two protagonists rant about other people and basically the entire world is absolutely hilarious. Destination Wedding also manages to avoid most of the cliches usually attached to this genre which is a breath of fresh and a nice break from all the generic romantic comedies. You will still find some but the approach is tasteful and not cheesy. Recommended if you wish to see something a bit different and offbeat.

Mandy
(2018)

Slow start that turns into an intense viewing experience
This is not your ordinary film. To be completely honest I was not sure if I would be able to sit through two hours of this when I started watching it. The beginning is very slow but if you are a patient film viewer you might like the second half of it much more; the pace picks up a bit and you get used to the style and atmosphere by then. I can easily understand why this film will not appeal to some. You will probably enjoy it if you are used to watching offbeat, slow, art-house type of films. It can be quite an experience if you let it and I believe, that no matter what you might think of Mandy, it is important to recognise the sheer ambitioun and original visoion and take on the revenge movie genre. Nicolas Cage and the rest of the cast do a great job as well. I would recommend it but since the reviews are completely mixed, see it and make up your own mind about it.

Hot Summer Nights
(2017)

A fresh take on the genre
In the flood of coming-of-age stories, Hot Summer Nights definitely stands out. It has a bit of everything; drama, romance, crime even and some light humour as well. The acting and directing are stellar but what especially deserves to be mentioned is the amazing soundtrack, great songs just follow each other from beginning until the end. There are some things that seem a bit over the top but this film still completely hooks you in and is very enjoyable. If you are a fan of coming-of-age stories and you wish to see something quite fresh, I would definitely recommend you go see it.

Leptirica
(1973)

Something for obscure horror film fans
I came across this film completely by chance. I have never heard of it before even though I was born in Slovenia , which used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The She Butterfly has a very simple premise. It is shot in a beautiful countryside whose inhabitants are puzzled and shocked by the murders of five millworkers. It is clear that it is a doing of a malevolent presence. 1h3min running time is perfect. The film never drags or loses momentum. It also contains some quirky humour which you will especially enjoy if you are from the Balkan region. But the highlight of the film, in my opinion, is the soundtrack. It amplifies the general atmosphere and gives the whole film a haunting and eerie feel. Definitely recomended if you are a fan of old school horror.

A Quiet Place
(2018)

No!!
One of the worst horror films I have ever seen by far. There are simply too many things that make zero sense. The writing is incredibly sloppy and lazy. Plot holes everywhere, characters making ridiculous decisions all the time and a bad ending to top it all. Where did it get such high ratings is beyond me. It is a dirty trick to rig ratings for blockbusters like that. I find it offensive and demeaning to audiences around the world. Whoever is responsible for this should not treat all people like idiots who will simply swallow whatever is served to them and expect them to like it. These user reviews prove it all. They picture realistic descriptions of this film. Simply avoid!

The Incident
(1967)

A film that will never age
The Incident is a must-see for every film buff. The story and the setting are very simple. The black and white photography looks really good and emphasises the gritty nature of night-time New York streets and the film itself. The performances are fantastic. You will see many familiar faces making their debut here. The main reason this film will never age is the fact that if you would put the exact same scenario in present times, things would not have played out much differently. The two thugs terrorising passangers on a subway train with everyone afraid to stand up and quickly put an end to the ordeal. Everyone for themselves. If it does not happen to me, I will be fine, I do not want to be involved and get myself into trouble. Sure some people speak up but their efforts are fast suppressed by the aggressors - too fast. It is a kind of social experiment in a way. How long does it take for people to reach their boiling point. The only reason that I have rated this 9/10 instead of 10/10 is that the set-up is quite long. It takes about 50 minutes before the subway train nightmare begins. But at least we get to know the thorough background of the characters. After that, The Incident kicks into top gear and the thrill ride with great suspense, acting and dialogue begins. Highly recommended.

Set It Up
(2018)

It is exactly what you would expect from this type of film
Lately, romantic comedies somehow all feel the same. Even though Set It Up brings nothing new to the formula, it is still more enjoyable than most films in this genre. The two main characters are lovable and have good chemistry. Their bosses are your typical office dragons and barely treat anyone else as human beings. The dialogue is quite witty and the pace is good too. When it comes to the plot development and the ending, it is all predictable and exactly like you probably expected. One of the positives is that it is actually not that terribly cheesy. There are a couple of scenes towards the end that will put you in danger of getting diabetes but other than that, it is not that bad. It is a nice date film or something to watch if you wish to relax for a bit.

Ghostland
(2018)

Feels a bit underdeveloped
Pascal Laugier is without a doubt a capable writer/director. After all, he is the man behind "Martyrs", a great horrror that leaves no one cold. Ghostland, however, has good direction, photography and fast pace right from the start but the dialogue could have been better and all the jump scares somehow fail to have the desirable effect. If you are used to horror like the aforementioned "Martyrs" or "A l'interieur", "Ils" and "Eden Lake", you will probably feel nothing despite all the violence and terror that the main characters go through. The twist in the story is not bad but could still be more developed in my opinion. The cast deliver nice performances and all the make-up effects are good too. As mentioned in the title, the film feels a bit underdeveloped; it is not terrible but it is not that good either.

Stockholm
(2013)

One of those nice surprises
Stockholm is one of those hidden gems you wish to come across every now and then. It is well written, well acted film and it makes you think about it for days after you have watched it. The characters feel very real and the dialogue is honest. The first half is very reminiscent of Before Sunrise with Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. The second half however, is completely different. There is a sudden change in the mood of the film, the characters reveal their darker side and the lighting becomes very bright which I thought was a nice contrast since the first part of the film is much lighter but it takes place at nighttime so the surroundings are of course much darker. The ending was done well too. Highly recommended to anyone that is looking for a good drama film.

Revenge
(2017)

Definitely needs to be taken with a pinch of salt
There is an insane amount of exaggeration in Revenge in many aspects of the film. If you treat it like a story taken from a comic book or a video game you might enjoy it. I am not sure if the filmmakers wanted for people to treat it like that or not but it is hard to interpret it otherwise. The direction, acting and photography are all top-notch and the female and male leading actors are pure eye candy material. It is nice to see a lead female character that is strong and tough. This does not make a film a feminist propaganda like some argue since the gorgeous leading lady is never wearing much in the film and there are numerous close-ups of her behind. It is a bloody, sexy, violent thrill ride if you allow it to be but as mentioned before, take it with a pinch of salt - maybe more than a pinch. Give it a shot and see what you make of it.

Black Christmas
(1974)

This is where it all began
The 70's were without a doubt the golden era of horror films. Many brilliant classics have been produced in that time and "Black Christmas" is one of them. This is the godfather of all slasher films and rarely surpassed - "Halloween" would be on the same level as this one. Some argue that the first ever slasher made was Mario Bava's "A Bay Of Blood" which came out three years earlier from "Black Christmas". If you are a fan of the genre I would definitely recommend it since it does contain heavy elements common to the genre but nevertheless "Black Christmas" has a look that is considered modern even today. It has all the ingredients that make a great horror film: creepy atmosphere, tension that never lets go, nice camera work, eerie soundtrack and a nice mystery. There is even some dark humour thrown in. You will not be bored for even a second. The characters are interesting as well; they are not all your cliche college students which became very common in future slashers. Highly recommended to every true fan of classic horror.

Thoroughbreds
(2017)

Not your ordinary coming of age story
Another one of those films where it is best not knowing too much about it before you see it to keep the experience as fresh as possible. For that reason, I am going to avoid writing about the plot and the rest. You will probably enjoy this if you are looking to see something different. Thoroughbreads is a nice blend of many things. It is funny, strange, a bit disturbing at times but thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely not your average coming of age story and it is real pleasure to see something fresh in this genre. The characters are very well written and two lead performances are fantastic. Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor Joy captured their characters perfectly and the chemistry between them is great. This is Cory Finley's directorial debut and it certainly does not feel like it since the film looks like it was shot by an experienced director. This is also Anton Yelchin last film performance before he tragically passed away and it is sad to see the great talent that the world lost. A film that I would definitely recommend.

V leru
(1999)

One of the best Slovenian films
When I first saw V Leru (Idle Running) it felt like watching s Slovenian version of Clerks. The two films have certain things in common; they are both very well written, are about growing up or to be more exact - not growing up, have great humour and are both shot in black and white. Dizzy, the main protagonist is in his late twenties and still living in a student dorm. He is basically stuck in life but not because he lacks intelligence, he is smart but simply does not fit in a life that society dictates us. No job, no prospects, no nothing, Who does not feel that way sometimes, or maybe all the time. If you are one of these people, you will love this film even more. The characters are very well written and it is impossible not to care for them and the dialogue is fantastic. Comedy and drama mix seamlessly in this film. The black and white photography seems to capture and amplify the general mood of the main character perfectly. Truly well made film all around and highly recommended.

Wildling
(2018)

Good start - bad finish
Wildling has a promising start even though it is very reminiscent to The Room in its early scenes. As the story unfolds, the film basically disintegrates before finally stopping with a badly written ending. At times, you could also connect the story to the one of Raw, the French film from 2016. I would advise you to see that one since it is incomparably better than Wildling. The acting is quite decent but the story feels underdeveloped, sloppy and it also contains some unecessary cheesy teenage romantic moments. There are not many special effects, but even the ones present are poorly executed. I know this is a harsh review and I wish I could list some more positives but they are simply not there. It is a shame since the opening minutes are not bad.

The Terror
(2018)

Very very good
If you are a fan of mystery/horror/supernatural tales, you will definitely not be dissapointed. This show delivers in every area. The premise is intriguing and it pulls you in right from the start, every single actor does a brilliant job, the sets, the costumes - everything works. The characters are well written and as the story unfolds, you also get to know their background stories. You will root for some characters and you will hate the others. Another thing that every decent horror film or show should have, is the always present sense of dread. The fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all they say and it also creates suspense and confusion among the characters. Not only they have to battle the harsh elements but something even more sinister is after them. The Terror succeeds in that area as well. Hats off to everyone involved in bringing this story to the screen.

Blockers
(2018)

An average comedy
Blockers is a type of comedy you might enjoy if you wish to kill some time and watch a film where you can put your brain on pause for a bit. Do not expect too much, it is not a terrible film, but it is not that great either. There are some funny jokes and some that feel somewhat generic. The pace is a bit uneven as well. It starts of nicely and it does draw you in, however, the last 30 minutes simply drag too much and the film will probably seem much longer to you than it actually is. The ending brings no surprises either. The characters are quite likeable though and the cast deliver decent performances. As mentioned, it is an average film but it might appeal to those who enjoy these type of raunchy R rated comedies.

Taeksi woonjunsa
(2017)

Powerful
A Taxi Driver is a film you should not miss. It is based on real events and it is impossible to stay indifferent when watching it. To be perfectly honest, I was not aware of the tragic events at the protests in South Korea in 1980. The complete disregard for human life will send shivers down your spine. It is impossible to understand why humanity never learns anything from its darkest mistakes. Throughout the history, similar things have happened and will unfortunately continue to happen in the future for sure. The story of the two main characters is inspiring. They risked their lives to bring truth to the world. You really get to care and root for them until the end. The acting is top-notch; wonderful, natural performances from everyone. And if you are an emotional person, the ending will definitely bring tears to your eyes. Strongly recommended.
