The Batman
(2022)

An overhyped adventure
I heard a lot of talk and praise, however this was an incredibly overhyped movie. I loved the Dark Knight, I loved Keaton's batman, and this one was fine too...but wow it brought nothing new to the table. It dragged on and on, I was so bored I stopped several times to do other things, I just couldn't get into it. It lacked any real mystery and suspense, the villain was over the top and unrealistic, and there was nothing terrifying about the batman himself. What was at stake here? I suppose if you are looking for a retelling without much risk or reward, then this would be a good show to watch, but overall It was a very average experience.

The Matrix Resurrections
(2021)

cash grab.
It's a shame, because I'm sure the actors were passionate about the film and tried their best, but we knew what this was from the trailer. The plot didn't work, the CGI takes you out of the realm of possibility, to sheer ridiculous characters and over the top woke/meta nonsense. Even the credit music was just so over the top and bad. This was a disappointment.

Free Guy
(2021)

One part strong, one part weak story.
The movie has basically 2 different story lines going on at once, and it will do whatever it can to try and convince you that they are related, and it is really hard to believe it. There are 2 different worlds, the "real world" and the cyber world that is inside of a big super company (of course) controlled by a tyrant owner (of course) anyways, the cyber story is actually extremely well written and enjoyable to watch, Ryan does a fantastic job of doing well..y'know Ryan stuff, and then to make tension and drama in the movie there has to be the outside real world stuff that really just gets in the way of the film. You don't really believe that the world was made by these 2 kids, you can barely believe that they worked for the big bad company that stole their code, and you can barely believe that the CEO is this obviously incompetent moronic caricature it's just 100% not believable. The acting is horrific and really takes away from the charm and fun of the cyber world. I found the real world drama and dialog to be a sloppy plot device that brought the overall movie down, but I would still recommend the watch, it was a lot of fun.

The use of youtubers and "influencers" was also extremely cringeworthy, and in my opinion, completely unecessary. They could have used unknown actors and accomplished the same end, I think they tried giving it more weight by using these people but it comes off as disingenuous and pretentous at times, and in a way exposing them for who they really are, actors. I don't think using them was a good move and again just detracts from the savory goodness this film has. The use of 4th wall breaking between the cyber/real world I thought was well done with Channing Tatum, I would have liked to see him do even more of the signature video game moves, just because it would be nice to see a skilled human do it.

The plot twist was also a little poorly done, I saw the twist coming early in the film when Ryan was opening and closing the shades, something no other NPC did so I knew it would come back later, but what didn't make sense was the "trigger" that was in the game. Before it was the song she was singing that made Ryan say "that's a great song" instead of his normal NPC catch phrase, so when the system was rebooted, I thought for sure she needed to sing that song again, instead of just kissing him. I felt that was a little sloppy.

Overall I'd highly recommend seeing the movie if you don't mind some very cringe moments, there are some funny moments as well and an overall great story telling with Ryan. The real world part is just poorly done and unrealistic to be enjoyable.

Nobody
(2021)

Not a 10 or a 9, but at least an 8.5
So if you know bob odenkirk at all, and you've watched either breaking bad or better call saul, it's gonna be really, really hard to imagine this guy as anything but that character. Yes, this film asks you to suspend a bit of disbelief, and it starts out slow, and eventually works up into complete nonsense. Near the end, you will have a few "yea yea right ok sure OK" moments, but I think that's what this was going for. If you enjoy movies that let you turn off the brain for a bit and just watch it unfold, and can enjoy it for what it is, it aint bad.

Movie buffs that require a really fleshed out story may be disappointed, or maybe not. It is well done, and bob has enough charm to carry it through.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
(2020)

Pretty fun and definitely different!
So it's a bit of a culture mish-mash and that's what makes it fun. I liked most of the jokes, it started off a little slow but got better, but overall it was fun the whole way though. My initial feelings...I was glad to have seen it, and I would probably watch it again. I would not say this is a family friendly movie, I don't think a younger audience will really get a lot of the jokes, this is definitely meant for those who are part of the political environment which has been such a hot topic lately, and it does a very good job of capturing most of it. I did like the ending a lot, it has a bit of a twist I was not expecting at all which I thought was very impressive for such a film.

The War with Grandpa
(2020)

The low ratings are justified
If you enjoy a suspension of disbelieve then this is the movie for you. I had a very hard time watching this, the situations they are in are incredibly unlikely and so forced, it does everything it can to insult your intelligence. I don't mind a few goofy moments, a few silly bits here and there, but this is so deliberate you could taste it.

for the most part this was a disappointment. I avoided the reviews first and went to the box office sales to see if it was good for myself, it's not. There was little thought put into this movie, it comes off as a poorly thought out youtube video. I was genuinely confused how this movie had so many ticket sales when the reviews giving it a 4 or a 5 are so accurate.

Watch at your own risk, it's pretty boring!

Space Force
(2020)

It's a slow burn that is still trying to get its footing.
This show takes a while to get into. It is a situational comedy that has basically the most unrealistic and absurd comedy in it, making it very forced and hard to follow.

It does however have some charm in it from time to time and I think with a few more seasons it will eventually find itself. It's far from a bad show but it's just not great right now. I think it has an incredible opportunity to make fun of the military but the show has yet to understand it, and while I love malkovich it can sometimes be too much. There are a lot of personalities that are trying to establish themselves early without really developing which takes away from the fun.

Steve is great in this but his choice of voice is really off the mark. As former military I can tell you officers do not sound like that, they are way more like the douchy characters the other lead actors play.

Bad Boys for Life
(2020)

The formula is a bit tired and cliche
It's great to see these two stars back together, they have a great chemistry and they play off eachother so well.

That's about it. The story immediately gets into a scene that is supposed to keep you in suspense when Mike gets shot, yet somehow recovers and like a miracle gets up out of his wheel chair only to go through the rest of the movie as if it never, even, happened.

Also, the mexican gangster stuff is just tired. Everything is nonstop spanish for the villains (hope you like subtitles if you're not fluent like hollywood seems to expect everybody to be) and of course unrealistic amounts of money, rides, girls and guns that almost makes me laugh rather than feel any sense of fear.

So if you were expecting something new and fresh with some actual thought, don't expect much from this. If you want to just enjoy seeing these two together doing unpredictable stuff and somehow surviving, then this is for you.

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

Interesting take that falls flat on its diverse face.
So obviously this film is filled with social and political correctness, the typical SJW stuff, and while some of it would be believable, it's so obviously contrived that it pushes your suspense of disbelief to the max.

It's pretty clear that the magic of the terminator is still there when Arnold shows up. His "Carl" character is still charming and interesting, and along with Sara has a decent dynamic albeit a bit overplayed. The idea that John was eventually killed by a T-800 and yet somehow they were still successful in stopping judgement day is really interesting to me, that there's an entirely different timeline and outcome is a pretty awesome concept really that doesn't pay off in any way.

The fight scenes that were heavily CGI were not that engaging and the main character's acting just wasn't her fit, it was really unbelievable that the fate of the future relied on this woman. The big reveal had no pay off either it was a twist that made little sense and left you going "yea right" the rest of the movie.

This terminator's new ability was more or less the same feeling, more "yea ok" than scary or believable. T2 gave you a sense that they finally made a terminator that was in fact unstoppable, and it had some suspense and mystery...I think the script has been so repeated and the outcomes so predictable that you just start to lose interest since you know how the story is going to end.

I thought they had a really interesting story with Sara and the new T-800 but ultimately the characters surrounding the story were just not that interesting or important, though I will say Mackenzie Davis looked stunning and did a fantastic job considering the writing and the weak main character, did the best she could.

If they could make a movie that didn't rely so heavily on current politics and social norms in a way that made it feel like it was its own would be far more entertaining. Movies nowdays pander to these things constantly that ultimately take away from the depth of the movie. They are so unecessary and shouldn't be a part of it. The original terminator has a woman for the hero and yet I can watch that without being force fed that all women are strong and beautiful and can do anything. Instead it took a very unlikely situation and made a powerful character that I could believe. If Hollywood could get past the SJW stuff and preachy messages they could get back to what made movies great in the first place.

Gretel & Hansel
(2020)

Interesting story, great acting, poor execution.
I watched a trailor but for the most part I came into it with a blank slate. I didn't read the original from the Brothers Grimm though I knew of the tale for the most part I was ready to experience this take on it.

First, the acting was great. I didn't like the writing, the narration was out of place, but the actors did a fantastic job. I felt like I was in a real world and was blown away from the start with the beautiful scenes and the sharp writing between gretel and her mother. When the children left home however, things just started doing downhill quickly.

In the next scene, gretel and hansel find some abandoned home and have a rest, but then out of nowhere this...undead...thing leans forward, moans and starts chasing them. Gretel was going to abandon her brother but in the last moments, turns around and strikes the ghoul, its eye falls out and of course it is still alive, and she is stunned! As were we, it made NO SENSE to the story and that's basically where it goes from here.

There are many points in the story where things are shown that ultimately don't pay off or are so out of place it will insult your intelligence. I suppose if you want to think VERY deeply, this undead thing might show us in some way that "hey magic exists in the world" but it's completely unecessary, the witch eventually shows that to us and does it in a really interesting way.

And yet, there are so many other moments that are just such a suspension of disbelief that it leaves you with too many feelings to be satisfied. At one point gretel is bound to a table, forced to watch her brother die, but using her newfound gifts, she is able to speak to her staff and strike the witch down, which she wouldn't have otherwise been able to do. Then in the next few seconds, she summons the strength to break the bindings...SO WHAT WAS THE POINT OF NEEDING THE WITCHCRAFT POWERS!?

I mean seriously, at no point in the movie do we ever see a barn or stable near this house, and yet at the end of the movie she sends Hansel off on a horse...WHERE DID THE HORSE COME FROM!? They just seemingly pull stuff out of nowhere and it comes off as sloppy.

I didn't mind it, my mother hated it, so rating appropriately.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot
(2019)

A very slow burn that gets you high at the end.
This is NOT going to be as fun or as funny as the original, and they knew it from the start. Jay has lost his edge and Silent Bob isn't that funny as a silent character anymore. If you go into the movie expecting it to be like before it will disappoint you, and they took that into account, and spend half the movie making fun of that fact. It isn't until near the end that it actually morphs into a real Jay and Silent Bob movie, and it's really cute.

It wont win an oscar, and it's not a love letter to the fans, it was a collaberation of actors celebrating their fame from the 90's till now, coming together to make fun of it all. It has its own charms, and I left knowing that things will never be the same as it was, but I appreciate what I had.

I imagine this film will get a lot of criticism and negative reviews, but as a 90's kid, it took me a while but I get it, and the cameos were a nice trip down memory lane.

The Lion King
(2019)

Amazing visuals, pretentious acting
This movie visually is really well done. There are several times where you will be watching it and just be in awe of how lifelike these things are getting nowdays they did a great job.

That being said, the acting by some of the characters is some of the absolute worst. In the disney movies the songs are far superior, partly because it's a cartoon, but moreso because the actors in it are having fun. You can hear it in their voices, it just sounds genuine, while in this movie many of the songs are so over the top and pretentious you can't stand it, simba in particular.

I think some of it has to do with the script, they changed some of the dialog from the original and so it just doesn't have quite the right tone in certain places.

The voice of Scar was very well done and the dialog they gave him was fantastic. Mufasa and zazu were as well.

Timon and pumbaa was just awful, and I usually love seth rogan in almost everything he does but both of those voices and dialog was just not right, probably the most boring and annoying characters in the movie, a complete 180 from being some of the most entertaining and lovable characters in the cartoon.

Joker
(2019)

A great movie to watch one time.
I know people are saying this is a masterpiece, and it really is it's fantastic and I loved watching it, but it is a slow movie and there are times that I did look at the time because the buildup is so slow, and the misdirection will leave you wondering it's not much of a surprise, that is to say until the end, it had a fantastic buildup that didn't entirely pay off but was a captivating take on the fanchise.

I think this movie is unique, I think it was something I enjoyed, but for me it just wasn't 10/10 even though I wanted it to be. I gave it an 8.5 mostly because it's not something I'd likely see again but for the sake of the review I did a 9. That's not a fault of the movie in fact I think it does a great job of telling the story so well that you pretty much get everything you need out of it once. I just think a 10 is too high.

I will say you get your money's worth and you will enjoy it but the end for me was almost...idk bitter sweet but still satisfying if that even makes sense.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
(2018)

It's OK, but not on the level of the original series
I know this has probably been said before, but the movie just isn't going to ever be Harry Potter. The reason that film was so interesting for so long is because everything was new, and the characters were kids. It's hard to follow a movie filled with adults that is based on a call to adventure with magic. The plot is just far too grown up for us to be enthralled.

Newt is a rather tired character and so are his creatures, there is only so far these characters can go before we grow weary of them. The biggest seller of the movie was obviously Dumbledore and the chance at seeing what the magic world was like long before the reign of the "Slytherin heir" comes. The problem is this really doesn't bring much insight into the world of magic any more than fantastic beasts did, at least for most of the movie.

There are parts in it that ramp up and they do a good job but it's not the same magic as HP delivers. Grindelwald however I feel did a great job and wasn't too over the top or hard to believe and I found the few twists that were in the story was interesting at least. I dunno...it just leaves you wanting more which is ok for being the second movie in an otherwise long series, but each HP movie always had an interesting story of its own to tell, where as this one didn't feel like it did, it was more of a continuation of the first and it's still not over with.

I wont give it a bad rating but I'd say it doesn't live up to any expectations and there were some plot holes that need to be filled. I would say the animation and effects were much better than the first one at least in some parts, so that's something to look forward to. I'm hoping moving forward this series really starts diving into core characters and gives them some serious development and backstory because they are far too interesting to leave out like they did in this one. Grindelwald is interesting sure but the other characters are basically forgetable aside from he and dumbledore.

Creed II
(2018)

A heavy hitter with weak acting
I want to start by saying I love the Rocky franchise. I think Stallone is a fantastic writer and director and I think he did a spectacular job in this film despite what he had to work with.

The story has a powerful premise that is completely missed by the acting. Instead of this being about Apollo Creed, and the death at the hands of Drago, that should have sparked a bitter rivalry between their sons...there was almost zero tension between them. What we got was a very small glimpse into the life of Drago's son, and Drago himself, and a bland story about Creed's son and his girlfriend and having a baby with some hearing issues to try and pull at heart strings. Basically all the growing up Adonis did in the first Creed is completely out the window so he can fight Drago's son, and his reasons for wanting it are completely unrealistic, it's not like he knew his dad so there's no hatred or revenge for what happened, like at all.

This is nothing like the original Rocky series, not at all. This was barely memorable and I'll be honest, I don't even remember half of the characters names from this movie because they're so forgetable. Creed was full of character, rocky was too, so was mickey and even adrian and paulie. There was just nothing there!

I also want to mention how weak the boxing scenes were. In rocky you can tell the punches were really far away and telegraphed, but the actors did such an amazing job at making it look and feel real specially in the second movie and beyond. You can tell Jordan is not a fighter, at all. Drago's son looked the part and it seemed like he was probably a fighter, but it was completely eclipsed by Jordan's lack of skill and believablitiy.

Overall this movie really surprises me with the high rating reviews. I wasn't impressed with the first movie either because of how weak Jordan's acting is, I think Creed deserved a better actor in honor of Carl Weathers and his brilliant performance. This movie just made me want to watch rocky again and forget it even exists.

This movie SHOULD have been better, but it falls flat.

Alpha
(2018)

Suspension of disbelief for an hour and a half.
Ok, I'll get right to it. From the start you have typical CGI animals painting the picture that there is a vast and complicated world, where some typical "tribe" trope with a made up language they use through the whole movie has to go out and kill the "great beasts" in order to survive. Of course they're not natives at all and are completely white and "Mad Max" looking, without a hint of where they are in the world to even make sense of their style and culture, no backstory, just here they are and go with it.

If that's not enough, you also must believe that the leader of this tribe is strong and wise, maybe a bit savage but also somehow loving and tender...who has a complete wimp of a son who can't even do the most basic of things by the age of I assume 14 or 15? I've seen harder kids downtown than this boy but again...we just gotta go with it.

Now we also have to believe that he strikes a bond with some german shepard looking "wolf" that always seems to constantly save this nitwit selflessly, sacrificing itself nonstop just...because!?

This is all made to rip off native culture and tug at heart strings to sell tickets. If it wasn't so blatant I might actually enjoy this movie, as real native history and good story telling can be fascinating, and a call to adventure stimulating. This just isn't it, it's cliche to the fullest and forces you to suspend all disbelief.

The Conners
(2018)

I think it did well, but ratings where they are due.
I can't say that the show was awful because it wasn't, it was a decent attempt at moving on without their star actress. There is a lot of outrage about how they killed her off in the show and I don't think it's justified, they found something that worked from the original revival and it fits from that season.

The reasons for removing Rosanne from the show however undermine everything she worked for, and letting it continue is in my opinion an awful idea. There is a show to be had here, the cast is as inventive and engaging as ever, they can do it...but it will always be tainted by the decisions of ABC and the media portrayal of Rosanne's personal character. Calling her actions "vicious" and "racist" and making every attempt of throwing it in her face from every media outlet and news report from a single twitter post will damage ABC's reputation, if it hasn't already.

Allowing outrage culture to change a long standing show like this is not the direction I want to see our society move towards, this was not the right call to make, and actions like this it will only get worse if allowed to continue and be supported.

EDIT: I started on season 2 to see what it would be all about now that roseanne is for sure not on the show, and while the writing still has some punch to it, the delivery just isn't there. It's turning more and more liberal in tone, and the situations are now about a half-mexican baby so borders are bad, they have a gay child so we need gay awareness, the main character can juggle 2 men and it's ok when really it's just not.

Roseanne always had these kinds of situations on her shows but they did it in a way that was tasteful without shoving it down your throat. There was a humility earned instead of being preachy, that was the charm it had and why it was so successful. I was hoping they could do it without her, but the new focus on Sara Gilbert doesn't work, she's just not strong enough to carry the show on her own and never was. There is a dynamic that is missing and it's clear in the writing that things are going nowhere fast.

The Ridiculous 6
(2015)

This...was awesome! Don't believe the ratings.
OK, this is gonna be something you have to see for yourself. I was smiling through the whole movie, it is suppose to be absolutely stupid, and that's what makes it brilliant. Sure, it doesn't have much of a story, the ending was a little predictable but they did a good job of keeping you guessing, and the characters were excellent! I love movie mashups where they bring in so many actors that the happy madison crew tends to roll with, as well as a few new additions. I can't find a single flaw with this, and I love to be critical. It really is ridiculous, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Please see it for yourself, keep an open mind, and enjoy the show, because really it was entertaining. The low rating is really undeserved from such a powerhouse of actors who brought such an entertaining performance.

The Gift
(2015)

The Gift is one of those you get that you want to return.
The movie for the most part revolved around 3 people, Simon and his wife, and a guy named Gordo. The movie has a very interesting plot, but really fails to deliver. The relationship between Simon and his wife is a bit of a mystery, they seem estranged or at the very least, distant, later we discover the reason behind it and the movie focuses on the issue quite quickly and deliberately which is fine, but seemed unnecessary considering what the main plot is suppose to be.

***Spoiler Alert***

Gordon bumps into Simon and tries to chum up to him and his wife. Simon doesn't seem to remember who Gordon is but once he does, goes on a seemingly odd push to call Gordon a weirdo. Its not clear why he finds him so strange and so odd and does what he can to push him away, specially when he finds that Gordon seems interested in his wife. Its later revealed that Gordon was abused and bullied by Simon, and the story is basically Simon got everything and Gordon got nothing. Eventually through the movie, it seems there's an intention for revenge, with very slow and subtle intrusions on Simon's life. The wife seems to be overly defending of Gordon and when she discovers Simon has a history with Gordon, tries taking a moral high ground to have him reconcile with Gordon to the point where she wants to leave him after having a baby because she's just so fed up with the lies Simon makes about his involvement with Gordon. As it turns out, Gordon's obsession seems to be validated, and in Simon's efforts to bully Gordon to stay away from him and his family, ends up motivating him to set up a plan to get back at Simon by hitting him where it hurts the most.

Simon wanted a baby badly, and now he has one, but has no idea if it is his or not, after Gordon gives Simon a tape that plants a seed of doubt to whom the father really is. It would be an amazing story, except that we don't know entirely the motivation for Gordon to do this. Sure he might have been bullied in school, but did it really push him so far as to possibly drug and rape Simon's wife just to get back at him? A simple paternity test would reveal what happened anyways, but my problem with all of it is that none of this seems to be enough motivation to break apart Simon's marriage, or really mess with Simon's life more than wondering if he had sex with her. The whole thing seems weak, and aside from a few deliberate jump scares, the movie felt very unlikely and unconvincing. Had it been convincing, this would have been an awesome movie, the very idea that someone gets their due justice from a bully is a great idea, but rather than gaining a moral victory it just seemed he became a sick twisted person and his revenge pretty unjust. It left me a bit disappointed. Great acting from Jason Bateman, Joel Edgerton felt like he fit the part well, but the part played by Rebecca Hall didn't seem like a good one for her, a drug abuser who's husband tried helping her overcome by relocating her to an amazing home in California with lots of friends, yet couldn't forgive him for having a past with a guy from simple bullying? Her drug addiction and as the story hints at, loss of their first child possibly due to a miscarriage or drug overdose or just using the drugs in general is forgivable, but Simon being a bully isn't??? I don't buy it.

Overall I think the story had amazing potential, but I think the morally "justified" martyr wife was absurd, and I think the bully revenge could have been written a bit differently, maybe something more than a childhood bully revenge to stalking-harassing-possibly drugging and raping his wife is too extreme to believe, or even want to believe.

Southpaw
(2015)

To anyone saying this is our generations "Rocky" must be "Punch Drunk"
**SPOILERS***

This movie is packed with a 1-2 combination of cliché story elements and very convenient character situations. The movie starts off well, we establish the characters very easily with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams's generous chemistry, and they both look incredible on the set together, easily steals the show. 50 cent looked clean and dapper, and Forest Whitaker delivered great realism, and that's about where it ends.

The Story shows a man who is just loaded with money. He's a mindblowing 43-0 (yea right) and during his after fight press conference, was interrupted by a would-be trash talking contender...OK sure that's great, seems solid so far, but from there the story goes a bit out of control. 50 cent working purely in his own interest, tries working a $30 million dollar deal using Gyllenhaal, and his wife being the brains behind the duo, quickly shoots it down believing that any more fights would permanently injure her husband and turn him into a walking tomato. VERY conveniently and shortly thereafter, Rachel McAdams is shot and killed by "accident" after a brawl broke out between the trash talking contender and Gyllenhaal, and quickly loses everything, and I mean everything. Somehow he goes from millionaire, to broke, to losing his kids and his home, car, and I guess non-existent savings, there isn't even anything in the plot about how maybe the wife hid money or someone stole the money from him, nope he just somehow had too many expenses and simply lost all his money. The story then moves to how he has to completely change who he is to satisfy his new boxing coach, his overbearing court decisions to take away his kid, and somehow make back the money he seemed to lose in an instant. Despite all that struggle, there is very little connection with any of the other characters after McAdams leaves the scene, and very little attachment to any of the very typical plot development other than he comes back and wins with seemingly very little struggle. The movie being called "southpaw" by the way is not about the fighter actually being a southpaw at all, neither was the contender, but conveniently called that because of an Eminem single and for magically landing an uppercut in the final round of the final fight by switching stances (which we didn't see) and that's it. Despite great performances, much of the story just left me wondering "why do I care about any of this" for a big chunk of the movie.

You can also feel that there are parts to the story that are suppose to make us feel bad or force us to feel connected to the characters that just don't work or don't seem to fit. Losing his child is very difficult, but her behavior and reactions though seemingly honest and real, don't seem to make much sense and seem a bit unrealistic, she seemed very close with her dad and ended up wishing he was dead were quite the extremes. The same can be said for the character Hoppy, who spent maybe 3 minutes of on screen time with Gyllenhaal and ended up losing his life in a domestic violence dispute with his family. There is a very real performance by Forest Whitaker about the situation, but why is it important to us as the audience? They didn't even touch on the character that much and we are suppose to have an emotional reaction? That in a nutshell is how the entire movie felt after the first 20 minutes.

I did watch the film through to the end, so for that I give it a 5 for keeping me interested at least through the whole show. The villain was too thuggish to be taken seriously, his reasons for losing all of his money didn't seem realistic, and much of how the story developed did so in a way that didn't seem to be very logical in real life, and VERY far from the well thought out movie that Rocky was.

Pixels
(2015)

This movie isn't a 10, but it doesn't deserve a 5.
After watching the movie, I can understand why people have mixed feelings about it. You can certainly feel the Sandler moments, they were evident from the very beginning and all through the movie, some of them were great, some were kinda "meh" so I get why some people are blaming him. I will say however that I can't see this particular movie working the way it did without anyone other than him, for one very obvious reason; the writing.

The movie tries hard to tell a story from a VERY lighthearted perspective and basically far out "would probably never happen" world, that being 2 kids who played video games at a young age, turned out to be the president of the united states, and a TV install guy. The flow of the movie seemed to take the situation of alien invaders VERY lightly, at one point they all went out to drink beers. If this movie was indeed written around the actors, then the whole scenario makes sense, since this is very Sander heavy, but I think considering the scope of the movie and what it could have brought to the table, it leaves audiences feeling a bit unsatisfied. Perhaps extending the movie a bit, and throwing in a few more realistic character developments would have greatly helped draw audiences into the story.

I found myself not caring about many of the aspects of the movie, because of the cheesy writing, but I will applaud the CGI that went into this movie, it's absolutely amazing what we are able to do, and they certainly went the extra mile to bring pixels to life. The way of defeating them was certainly unbelievable, and the fact that they were able to figure it out so fast was unbelievable. I think since the aliens were presenting them with the game, they would have also presented them with a tool to defeat them, so the light gun should have came from them, not the military. I also think the girl should have been taken for donkey kong, as it makes more sense. I dunno, there just seems to be odd writing choices through, but much of it I did enjoy regardless, I mean it's still an Adam Sander movie and for some reason we just can't get enough.

at LEAST a 7, certainly not a 5.3 the current ratings are giving. This movie is certainly a throwback to kids from that time, so anyone between the ages of 25-35 should appreciate it.

Ted 2
(2015)

What the heck did I just watch?
I gave it a 5 because I managed to watch it the entire way through, but wow this was a struggle.

So the movie starts off slow enough, but most of the jokes were just extremely tasteless and the flow of the movie made no sense for the first hour or so of the film. It was mostly one bad line after another, with every one ending on a black dick joke. I will say the opening was pretty cool to watch, I'm guessing they just forgot to add a bit of comedy after that till about halfway through the movie, even the stuff in the previews made me laugh harder than anything because of how they presented it, and I think that's where this movie dropped the ball. In many cases I was making a face going "wait that made no sense" and that's never a good sign.

Near the end of the movie however the storyline actually picks up and it's not half bad at all, I think they just went a bit overboard with some of the comedy scenes. The cameos they included were great and for the most part I like seeing movies having fun and experimenting with public perception that poke fun at the stereotype to create a laugh, I wish more comedy movies would do this, not only does it help boost a movie that might be dry in some scenes, but adds some light hearted fun to an othewise "try to hard" presentation.

I can tell you in all honesty if you see this in the theatre you will be wasting your money. If you wait till you can watch it at home or on netflix, it will be a good way to waste a portion of your day.

Terminator Genisys
(2015)

An honest look at a very hard series to live up to.
Wanted to give it the full 10, but I simply can't do it. I will say though that this movie was better than others have said in reviews.

***Spoilers***

I wont go into great detail about the movie except to point out the bad, as most people want to know in a review but first, the good. The movie did a good job touching on all the points that were necessary to make the story believable. I felt that the timeline explanation wasn't too far fetched to be believable, the re-enactment of the original Terminator movie was done quite well and the CGI was real enough to make me believe I was seeing a real situation. Usually people who do CGI always make the character so out of place and do stupid things that make you go "seriously..." but in this case they did it rather mildly, except in one part; the ridiculous helicopter scene.

Up till that point I was completely enjoying the movie, till they threw in the absolutely predictable "lets make things happen that would never happen in real life just so it can look cool" stuff that kills a good movie. Looking back on T2 the movie does a great job to incorporate the CGI but kept the set and scenes very realistic (partly because they had to, using real props and all) and when movies are able to blend the two together, it makes for an enjoyable effect. The parts they did this right I felt were in the teleportation fields and in the car chase at the beginning of the movie. Heck, even the ending the CGI didn't look terrible at all I really enjoyed it. Had they removed the completely far-fetched overly ridiculous helicopter scene, this would have been a very good addition to the series.

The actors did a great job to portray their respective roles, although I didn't like the Reese because he didn't look at all like the first one, he didn't oversell the usual typical body built bonehead they pick for parts they shouldn't be playing in, I felt he was completely believable and did a great job, credit where it is due. On the flipside, the Sarah Connor was also a bit different but for different reasons, to which we can simply say "well she's not the exact same person she would be from the first because of the changed timelines" so it's something the actress was able to get away with, again a very believable likeness, just different personalities (but for the most part very close to the original Sarah).

And it was so good to see Arnold again, he definitely still has the same Charisma that brought him to the big screen and continues to show even today, thank you for agreeing to revive the series and give it another go, it was really nice. I also thought his participation in the film was fantastic, it had all the same wit and charm I felt (that other reviews didn't seem to agree) as the first 2 films of the series. I wish I could say more to the film but seeing it for yourself should cover anything I could say here, except perhaps the bus flip was also another idiotic choice, but certainly wasn't the helicopter scene. Great job to everyone in this film and thank you for staying true to the series, this was certainly the T3 we needed.

Oh and as far as the ending is concerned, although they leave it up for some interpretation (meaning they could do a T4 off of the events from how they rounded the film together so quick and neat at the end) I would say it was somewhat disappointing that they ended it as quickly as it did. I would have liked to know what happened to the city after the explosion, some explanation into how the hell the T-800 was magically upgraded to a T-1000, and why they were for some reason avoiding the fact that despite having a countdown timer, the program could and should have still integrated itself into all the systems at any moment regardless of being "beaten" before the timer hit zero...I mean when John Connor touched the screen (which that made NO sense how that worked) his interaction could have told the system to start spreading preemptively, but that didn't make the ending a deal breaker for me.

8.5 for me, well done.

The Cobbler
(2014)

Why is this rated so low?
Yes, this wasn't Adam Sandler's typical work, it had very subtle comedic undertones, and it missed out on potential "laugh out loud" moments, but what it brings to the table was something I honestly didn't know I was craving. What starts out as a slow and soggy beginning, gradually turns into something fresh and light hearted that I really enjoyed. If you were expecting the slap-your-knee comedy you are used to, this may not be for you, but if you are ready to see some just good quality acting, than this movie is just the ticket. It's always welcoming to have a movie take what seems like everyday life and introduce a touch of "what if" magic to the mundane, and I think this movie hits that mark perfectly. It wasn't over the top, it didn't try to hard, and it takes a concept that we take for granted and introduces it to us in a very kind way.

Jurassic World
(2015)

A truly first impression of the movie in progress
This review will be typed out while watching the film, that way the very first impression isn't lost as the movie goes forward.

(Beginning to 30 minutes in)

***SPOILERS*** OK, I can already feel the predictability. It's very hard to make a "part 2" to any series when you know what will basically happen. Since the audience knows this, it seems the directors wanted to instead focus more on the characters, which is...good and bad more or less. Already there is tension and conflict in chris pratt's character, and it seems forced and unnecessary. I hate to compare it to the first one, but that's usually easiest to do.

In the first film Dr. Alan Grant is his own person, with his own goals and his own expertise that is expressed right from the get go, and is introduced in a way that, despite his expertise, this new situation makes it feel like he's completely out of his element. In Jurassic world however, I have no clue if chris pratt is a doctor or not, they just touch on the fact that he's ex navy, and go right into the drama of his position in the park, introducing problem after problem. Of course, the movie tries so hard to make every scene the magic scene, having the actors pose and look as pretty and intense as possible. I like a good glory shot, but I love the buildup more. Of course, keeping an open mind, I can hope the next parts will be better...

(About 60 minutes in)

So basically everything that could have just gone wrong, goes wrong, what a coincidence! At least in the first film there's a reason things go wrong, but this...It's just gross incompetence! Without checking to see if their "thermal tracking" might have simply malfunctioned, they go into the cage of the most aggressive dinosaur they ever engineered!? Who does that!? These camera angles to add to the drama that is already 30 minutes into the movie is just...laughable. I want to enjoy this movie, but it's down right ridiculous right now. I will say though I like how they portray the park, there are some really nice shots and the CGI isn't too tacky, It's just this plot line, the movie feels all over the place. From these drama shots to the militant park keepers, it's just as over the top as you can get.

The ultramegazord hybrid just killed the typical expendable people trying to capture it, and wow the exposition is just so tacky, so unbelievably tacky, I just so bad! I can't stop shaking my head. I think enough is said for this part, lets move to the next minute marker.

(Ok adding Jimmy Fallon just made all the over the top drama stomach- able, +1 that was refreshing.)

Wait...did the phone seriously just spaz out for no apparent reason yet again? Are they seriously hoping their audience is gonna believe...wow OK moving on truly this time.

(about 90 minutes into the movie)

Cliché dinosaur barely alive fake tear/pointless connection scene, Pratt shoulders the gun, unshoulders the gun, walks a few feet, shoulders the gun, unsholders the gun, radios mess up for no reason, vehicles have sparks when broken but wouldn't do that in real life, and my god the people running the park casually talking about people dieing and what the dino is doing is just so so so so...wow! The only ones acting like anything that could happen if this was for real are the people in the park. This is by far the cheesiest thing I have seen in a very long time. They even had the dinosaur walking away from an explosion like a typical early 90's action movie! I'm speechless!! The only honest reaction to any of this are the people panicking after the pterodactyl outbreak. The best part is when Chris Pratt grabs a 2nd gun that he seems to never shoot, only to have Bryce Dallas Howard fire it and then they KISS afterwards!? Honestly this movie is SO crazy it's almost a comedy more than anything.

There's really nothing more to say about this film. I hope people truly enjoy this movie, but for a typical audience I think this movie goes above and beyond to insult our intelligence in a way I didn't think was possible. I can't say it's a bad movie, it didn't make me stop watching it, but I did stop caring and that's never good. I gave it a 5 as a kindness, anyone rating this movie more is not rating the writing or directing of the movie, but the actors or perhaps even just glad to see another re-imagining.
