Legion
(2010)

Terrible
This is the worse film I have seen in recent memory. A pity, because the premise was interesting and quite original.

Where to start? It was poorly edited, giving the film a disjointed fell and adding to the overall lack of conviction that dogs this film. Lucus Black's acting was as wooden as the cross one of the poor characters ended up impaled to. Unfortunately, Black has a major supporting role. Paul Bettany just looks bemused; perhaps he was debating if the money was worth it - Legion will not enhance his career.

While I accept the plot was unrealistic, there is no excuse for the laughable execution. For example, I do not know of any human female that can give birth and then be up running around immediately afterwards. Why didn't the zombies try to kill the baby the minute he left the diner? How did a newborn baby survive a terrible care crash when he wasn't wearing a seat belt? I read on IMDb that this film cost $26 million. I don't know where the money went because it looks cheap.

It was nice to see Dennis Quaid, which is why I gave Legion 2 stars instead of 1, but it is, in fact, awful.

Toy Story 3
(2010)

Disappointing
This film was overlong, and lagged in the middle. There was insufficient humour and character development. The rescue scenes towards the end seemed contrived towards.

Worse of all, it was far too dark and frightening for young children. I could here some of the audience getting quite restless.

The final scene and outro were excellent, but also reinforced how much the film itself had lost it's way.

All in all, I was disappointed.

Toy Story 1 and 2 were truly wonderful films and I have watched them several times since, but this one won't be joining my DVD collection.

Fringe
(2008)

Weak
Well, I have just watched the pilot. I won't be tuning in again. The programme was nothing but a pale imitation of the X Files, right down to the sceptic and the believer angle, except with gender swap. The plot was unconvincing, and the characters were terribly clichéd. The stylised touches served no purpose (X-rays of leaves, apples and butterflies? Why?) The main female lead is a wooden actress with no charisma, and Joshua jJckson, as well as every other cast member was lumbered with an unengrossing script.

How the pilot got picked up for a full season is truly beyond my understanding.

V for Vendetta
(2005)

Dire
the script is clichéd and forgettable.

for a film set in england, it is strangely americanised. i suppose because the original tory fascism v anarchy of the comic was transformed to a denouncement of post 9-11 neo-conservatism.

that would explain why i as a brit found it so emotionally uninvolving. i would guess that most of the high stars given for this film came from Americans.

the characters lacked depth, so i just did not care for them, or their struggles.

how did v manage to procure all those masks and organise all those van deliveries in a totalitarian regime where everyone was being spied on? do yourselves a favour and read the original graphic novel; it is a masterpiece.

Please Don't Eat the Daisies
(1960)

Plesantly amusing
i really like this film. unlike some other reviewers i think the chemistry between niven and day is strong - they presented like a genuine married couple. the script is versatile, witty on the one hand, but also able to shift to the more dramatic. the argument between day and niven as he reveals his desire for professional success is very well done. niven himself was laugh out loud funny on many occasions, and the portrayal of parenthoood was quite charming. the song at the school doesn't do anything for me, so i tend to fast forward past that scene. however that is a matter of personal preference: i enjoy doris day as an actress much more than as a singer. it's an amusing, easy going, light hearted film, perfect for afternoon viewing.

Superman Returns
(2006)

Should have been better
i've just got back from watching superman returns. i'm afraid i was slightly underwhelmed. i really wanted to love this film, but it isn't a patch on Donner's superman.

i don't feel the 2.5 hours were utilised very well. we could have had fewer scenes of people standing around in a stupor while all hell broke lose around them, and the scenes of young Clark were unnecessary. cut those out, and there would have been more time to show Clark integrating back into his work and his life.

i found the attempts to create suspense fell flat some times, such as when Richard was trying to fly the plane out of a dive and the plane disappeared from the screen - it was apparent that he, Lois and Jason would survive, just as it was when that same lame attempt at suspense was applied when Lex was flying his helicopter. what i'm trying to argue is that Bryan Singer failed to bring his usual deftness of touch to many of the scenes in this film, which surprised me because after the sublime X-men 2 i thought this film would be a walk in the park for him.

further, some of the characters were horribly underused, like Eva Marie Saint's Martha Kent, or were one dimensional (Richard, Jimmy, Perry White) it wasn't entirely negative of course. Brandon Routh shows great promise - that close up of his face when he heard Lois tell Richard that she was never in love with superman had great resonance and reminded me of Chris Reeves' scenes when superman turned back time to save Lois. but Brandon will only be able to show off his acting range while playing Clark which is why i hope we will see more of Clark in the next film.

we also need to see more of Clark because i'm, hoping Singer's obvious love of the superman mythos will allow him to show a romance between Lois and Clark. i have always felt that this was the most beautiful element of a great love story - that it was only when Lois let go of the superman fantasy and came to love Clark that she truly found the love of her life. however, i don't suppose that will happen now that Lois has a son with superman (and not Clark). Dean Cain's superman once said to Lois that "Clark is who i am - superman is what i can do". if the films continue to devote more time to superman than Clark, how will we come to understand him as a person?

Bryan Singer is like Lois, so in love with superman, that he can't see Clark's worth.

back to the positives - the out of control plane scenes were cracking, vintage singer (except that i should think that anyone who was thrown around as much as Lois was would be dead), and has superman ever been filmed in mid air so beautifully? he looked inspirational and Christ-like, in keeping with the numerous biblical influences in the film.

another positive for me was seeing Brandon Routh in lycra. i was having very unpure thoughts. also liked the little touches, such as the recreation of the cover of action comics no. 1 sorry but one of my bigger beefs in the portrayal of Lex Luther - when is someone going to get him right? anyone who has read the comics knows that Lex Luther is a brilliant, deadly, powerful sociopath who very seldom makes mistakes. he wouldn't need to marry some old woman to make money as he owns several multinational companies. he certainly wouldn't surround himself with fools like kitty (parker posey). that is why he is superman's most dangerous opponent. Kevin Spacey's rendition is an improvement on gene hackman's, but there is a way to go. remember Philip s. Hoffman's character in MI 3? that is Lex Luther! my other beef is with Kate Bosworth. at 22 years old, she is far too young for the part. i didn't believe for a second that she has a five year old son or has won Pulitzer. can we please get someone ten years older (and who has chemistry with Brandon Routh) for the sequel?

you know what Singer could also have spent some more time doing in this film? showing how ambivalent most people would be about superman's return. he takes off for five years without explanation? sure the people of earth would be glad to see him back, but they would also be very angry that he left in the first place, and fearful that he will suddenly depart again. showing nuances like that would have made this a brilliant film, instead of a good one.

can someone help me out with something? i cannot understand how Lois knows that Jason is superman's son. the events in this film are meant to take place five years after superman 2? well, in superman 2, Clark erased Lois memory so she had no recollection that she knew Clark was superman, and no recollection of their sexual encounter. so, how did she know? all in all, this film left me feeling unsatisfied. however, singer may well hit his stride with his sequel, and/or i may have a greater appreciation on my second viewing.

Charmed
(1998)

frustrating!
hmm...! for some reason i find this series quite compelling and since i switched on to it on living TV, i have not missed an episode. i find this frustrating because charmed is a bit rubbish, quite frankly.

i would have to say that the first three series were the best, some of the plots were pretty decent, especially as the women adjusted to their new abilities. i liked the fact that they didn't always (in fact, seldom) got it right when fighting demons, although this wore thin by season eight.

having said that, the quality of the acting was inconsistent; the actress that played piper had this vacant look on her face most of the time as though she'd wandered onto the set by mistake. in fact the male supporting actors outperformed the stars at all times. character development was virtually non-existent, and when it did occur it was a contrivance for the plot, rather than the other way around. for example, it never made sense to me that cole did not tell phoebe about his "i'm possessed by the source" problem, and you never got a sense of his struggle to evolve into a human being. the plots themselves left a lot to be desired, consequently you could usually predict the ending of the show five minutes after it started.

don't even get me started on the script...

...oh, alright then. i don't know if the actors themselves were wooden, but the witches came out with some lame comments at times. i can recall when piper found out that she was going to have fertility problems, not only did she choose to tell her husband in front of all her sisters, but then failed to explain to him why they were going to have problems conceiving, and basically told him not to worry, it will work out. you'd think they were talking about the family car breaking down! and how did they overcome those conception problems anyway? just one of the numerous plot holes...

i'm giving this a five because of the quality of male totty. julian mcmahan, brian krause and nick lachey i salute you!
