Raised by Wolves
(2020)

Ridley Scott´s nemesis of woke culture
There are so many holes in the story, I was unable to concentrate on the plot. During the first episode I was constantly asking myself, how they can weave woolen clothes with no sheep? How can they farm aloe vera and beetroots without water? Also, an android who/which smokes filter cigarettes? And the only weapon you have in a space shuttle is an old fashioned, 20th century pistol? Why do they draw snakes on the wall, if there aren´t any? Also, for how long can you actually look at a bleak, dusty landscape and hear shrieking noises (yes the same as the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings) coming from everywhere? If it had not been for the amazing acting and a few, funny philosophical ideas, I would not have watched it, i.e. Atheism is just another belief, fathers are nothing but minor service androids who are desperate to be useful, and mothers are shrieking necromancers hoovering through the fog and filthy air, until they find out, there are actually some bottled up feelings hidden somewhere in their android memory. They just have to "connect" to access them. When I close my eyes I can see Ridley Scott chuckling to himself at having created the nemesis of all the happy, woke and vegan humans of the 21st century.

Barbarians
(2020)

Weder Fisch noch Fleisch
Filmed in the same setting in Hungary as The Last Kingdom, but with worse decoration and less budget. It could still have been great, but there was not one sympathetic character in the whole story. Arminius dry and with Austrian accent, when speaking German, Thusnelda has the charm of an influencer for fitness products and the hairstyle to match (isn' t the German Tussi - term for brainless, selfcentered girl - derived from Thusnelda?), flat, lifeless characters, big plot holes. And on top of that they were trying to make some jokes, - which went horribly wrong. And you completely messed up the chance you had to picture an enormous battle, which went for several days and took a lot of combined effort, building work and coordination from the tribes and on Arminius' side (and this is not even historically disputed) and completely ruined it. The main characters did not get one bit of convincing combat training, i mean come on. I really wanted to like it, as some of the actors are actually not bad. But you people a village with fat old Germans and let them claim, that they hardly have anything to eat? I have a growing feeling that the director was so focussed on beating her pc gender message through, that she gave a s..t about everything else.

Peaky Blinders
(2013)

Great acting but
Directors completely overstretched use of slowmo and distorted guitars. This is like a neverending videoclip of a nick cave track, and after season 3 it just goes on your nerves. Season 5 is unwatchable. Shame, because the acting, costumes, sets and dialogues are great. Take out the slow mo walking and the guitars, fill the space with action, background or character development, and you have a great show instead of a video clip.

Space Force
(2020)

such a waste of funds
What happened to John Malkovich to accept this role? not funny AT ALL

The Spy Who Dumped Me
(2018)

some funny jokes but horrible screenwriting
If you are looking for a series of SNL sketches, this movie can work for you. However, for a movie the plotting was just terrible. Only two dimensional characters, so you don´t really want to engage with anybody here. They basically only included Sam Heughan to dig into his Outlander fame and drive some femal attention to the movie. Codeword "Highland"? Bandaged arm? Seriously??? Plus points are the excellent acting of Mila Kunis and Sam´s worthy performance as an action based actor. And why did they cast a comedian like Hassan Minaj, if they did not give im a single funny line? Not one. The rest was Kate McKinnon doing her SNL thing, not more.

The Crown
(2016)

Best drama series on Netflix
I have hesitated for years to watch T.C. First, I am not a royalist at all, and second I thought, there would be nothing going on, and the episodes would treat only the yellow press stuff. Now I bow to the makers of the series, especially the creator. The drama has Shakespearean quality. And it´s entertaining. Pip Torrens as Tommy Lascelles is outstanding. Season 3 cast falls a bit short. T. Menzies and O. Colman are good, but the break between season 2 and 3 really hurts. Couldn´t she have been given at least blue eye lenses? And Mr. Menzies appears tiny beside her. Although their acting is great, it just does not cover up the physical gap compared to the first two seasons. However, Josh O. Connor, Erin Doherty and the amazing Helena Bonham Carter make more than up for it, so the hiccup is a minor one.

Britannia
(2017)

Entertaining and fascinating
I hate Game of Thrones, but I loved Britannia. The plot evolves a bit slow sometimes, and yes, there is too much swearing, which is terribly out of any historical context, considering, that the f-word hasn´t been used before the 15th century. Other than that, great entertainment.

10,000 BC
(2008)

not as bad as everyone says
But iron cages and bars did definitely not exist around 10000 BC. So if the movie uses a precise time period in its titel, it should at least have some archeological accuracy. It just spoils everything. If you are telling the story of Jesus walking on water in the context of his precise era, you would not give him rubber boots in a movie, wouldn´t you?

Vikings
(2013)

Good idea messed up
Good plots, good acting. Many good dialogues, many really bad ones. The make up and hairstyles are the worst. Women certainly did not wear eye-make up nor pluck their eyebrows in the 9th century. And when they try to start pleasing the LGTB community by mixing Lesbians and transsexuals into the plot, it just gets messy. Turning a historic series into a heavy metal kitch posse just does not work.
