Army of Darkness
(1992)

Department store worker goes back in time
A book awakens evil forces and sends Bruce Campbell into a magical past resembling Highlander medieval times with Scottish people. Just before sending him to this other realm, the book which is alive enters into his body and Bruce must chop off his hand with a handy-dandy chainsaw. He then puts the chainsaw in place of his right hand. In the other realm, he is captured by soldiers wearing English knight armor and Renaissance uniforms. At their castle the soldiers all throw Bruce into a pit where he kills a zombie. Even though they confiscated his chainsaw, he recovers it from a sorcerer who throws it in there so that he does not die. The magical sorcerer also lobbed Bruce's shotgun below. He releases the other prisoners who were about to be throw in the pit after him. With the shotgun he makes the rules now! So, basically, he is King in this realm because of his technology. Fortunately, his car was sent with him as well. He uses it in the final battle against the forces of Evil, the Evil Dead Army. Bruce Campbell's character fights witches and skeletons along the way.

The Hobbit
(1977)

An epic cartoon movie
The Hobbit is about Bilbo Baggins and a magical ring that allows the user to disappear when worn. Bilbo is a hobbit which is similar to a human except shorter and they have bigger feet. His ordinary routine is interrupted one day when Gandalf and his companions arrive at his hobbit hole. One of the dwarves asks Bilbo to join them because they need a burglar to steal treasure from Smaug, a dragon. While traveling to Smaug's lair, they are captured several times by various creatures including goblins, spiders, and trolls. It is when the party is captured by the Goblins falling through a moving wall in the back of the cave, being pulled into a large hallway of an even larger part of the same cave, Bilbo stumbles into another part of the cave. Bilbo finds the ring there, in the cave. Gollum, upon Bilbo's escape, shouts accusingly that Bilbo stole it from him. He found it fair and square in the part of the cave where his stumble ended, where Gollum was paddling around in a canoe, eating fish. He leaves. Bilbo then links up with his party again and they continue their journey. Bilbo does make it to Smaug's lair and a Human ends up killing the dragon. This city guard is told where to shoot Smaug by a "fool bird!" He is missing one of his scales. Five armies fight below. When all is said and done, Bilbo makes it back to the Shire, where he lives.

Predator
(1987)

Army commandos hunted by an alien
Arnold Schwarzenegger and his team are hunted by an alien warrior in the Vietnamese forest.

Independence Day
(1996)

Aliens invade planet Earth
Scientists living in the United States intercept a strange alien "transmission" from outer space that turns out to be a count down. I do not know why the aliens would send any type of "message" that the humans could receive. At zero, the invading aliens propel a laser pulse from positioned destroyer ships that demolishes various major cities on earth including DC, where the President originally is. The idea, I imagine, is to reduce morale and make it easier to kill them all! To prevent their annihilation, while at Area 51, one American scientists proposes a plan to the President who arrived by Air Force One with him to give the alien computer system a virus. This virus will bring down all of the alien shields so that the united human counter-offensive can use some of their own weapons, i.e., a nuclear missile. The Americans discovered previously they were not able to penetrate past them; after the first strike the President ordered the military to launch a nuclear bomb from a grounded armored vehicle that had a visual of one of the destroyers in sight. The missile was not able to pass its shield. The scientist and a soldier commandeer a captured enemy jet stored there, at Area 51, and successfully upload the virus into the mother ship by flying the jet into the mother ship's docking bay and connecting to their computer system. With their shields down, each and every of the invader's ships is taken down. All the humans had to do was remove their shields.

The Exorcist
(1973)

See a young girl possessed
A young girl becomes possessed by a demon. Her skin becomes a grayish color and stays that way. Two Catholic priests are asked to remove this demon from her. While demanding that the demon leave her body, some of her skin rips open and her head even spins around. An image of a demon appears luminating across from them over the girl in her bed on her knees, wincing. The image almost looks like a hologram. In another scene she does the crabwalk down the stairs. What are her parents going to do? Will they ever get their little girl back? Watch The Exorcist to find out.

Aladdin
(1992)

Genie grants three wishes
Aladdin is about a young Middle Eastern homeless guy living on the dusty streets of Agrabah. Aladdin, the main character, owns a monkey named Abu. Early in the movie, he, by chance, ends up meeting the princess, Jasmine, who is in disguise because she wants to get out of the palace where she lives and experience life on the outside in the real world. She doesn't like it in the palace because it is confining and she is not able to make her own choices. For example, she must find a husband by her next birthday per the local law. While they are hanging out, Aladdin is arrested for stealing bread from earlier. He is taken to the dungeon. Her pleas to let him go fall on empty ears because the palace guards are under the orders of Jafar, an evil sorcerer who works for the King, Jasmine's father. They do not disclose to him or to her whether they are there specifically to arrest him. Later, while Aladdin is in shackles, Jafar sneaks into his cell disguised as an old peasant donning a gold tooth and hobbling around on a wooden cane that looks like a giant corkscrew. In exchange for Aladdin's assistance in finding treasure, this magic lamp, Jafar says that he will help Aladdin escape. He begrudgingly agrees. What else is he supposed to do?! Aladdin goes with the disguised Jafar to Cave of Wonders where, inside, he finds the lamp. Find out what Aladdin does with his 3 wishes and how he tries to win over the princess's heart.

The Princess Bride

A good bedtime story
A grandfather reads a book about adventure to his grandson.

The Truman Show
(1998)

Reality TV at its finest
Truman is a married man whose entire life has been recorded as part of a TV show. His show is very popular on the outside world, but Truman does not know that; he eventually finds out that he is part of a show and he quickly realizes that he does not like that, whether it be because of the lack of authenticity in his relationships or any other reason you can think of. Find out if he is able to escape this pretend world or if he would even like to leave it.

Mononoke-hime
(1997)

Japanime at its best
When I was younger, I used to watch TV shows like Power Rangers, Dexter's Laboratory, and Swat Kats. So, Japanime isn't always popular with me, but I really like this movie. I relate to the main character because he cares about others and does what he can to help. And the movie showcases cooperation between animals and humans well... think horses. Yakul, Ashitaka's red elk, which looks like a Tauntaun from Star Wars, carries him from place to place. At the beginning of the film, actually, he is riding Yakul when Nago, a wild boar covered with a horrible spirit, attacks a small village. Ashitaka helps a small group of villagers escape from Nago, who looks like he is covered in a heavy, thick, amorphous black oil, but upon closer inspection, it looks more like a pool of worms. These worms shoot out of him like tentacles. A piece of the black spirit shoots out from Nago and strongly twirls, lightly grabbing Ashitaka's right arm. He pulls away. While a small amount of the sludge is on his arm, he is able to release an arrow into the monster's eye, killing him. After his first fight, as his arm rots, this wound glows and he needs help to heal it or else he will die. Find out how iron is killing the animals and see how Ashitaka helps save the forest while preventing his own death.

The Lion King
(1994)

A classic
All Disney movies are good, except for maybe Princess and the Frog. This movie was released during, I would say, Disney's golden age of movies when Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Pocahontas were made. While Mickey Mouse will always be Disney's flagship character, the princesses from these movies laid the ground work for what we know Disneyland to be today. I believe that the animals in the movies also offer a certain mysticism that contributes to the magic of what Disney and Disneyland is today. And like many other cartoon Disney movies, Lion King is a classic because of the plot, songs, and the art work. I would definitely recommend any child to see Lion King because it is always fun seeing a movie and then visiting the theme park where all your favorite characters live.

Scarface
(1983)

Cuban gangsters in Miami doing blow
Scarface is about an immigrant, Tony Montana. Tony is from Cubá. Starting out as a dishwasher, right after quitting his job he quickly makes a ton of money selling cocaine; some púlo Columbians were coming into town and Tony needed to go to their apartment and sell them coke. For doing this task, the agent of his new boss would pay him "five grand". Tony, ultimately, ends up doing other stuff too, like being hired as an assassin. He has some decent qualities that make him relatable, but you will have to watch the movie to find out what leads to his demise.

Gladiator
(2000)

Great movie
This is one of the best movies I ever saw. Maximus has awesome armour and there are some cool swords. The opening fight scene is something I like to watch. If you like war movies, then this is a good one!

12 Angry Men
(1957)

Worth seeing one time
12 Angry Men is worth seeing once, but I would not watch it again. I saw this movie in high school. I remember the angle that the stab wound was inflicted being a major turning point, in the film, for one of the jury members. I think it all started with most of them thinking that the accused was guilty, but one stubborn juror would not be coaxed by limited time and by being rushed by the other jurors to allow justice to not be served that day. Beyond that, nothing in the movie stands out. The clothing that they wear is fun. I don't think that another movie could be made like it.

Goodfellas
(1990)

A Funny movie
I normally don't like movies that portray Italian immigrants as gangsters, but this movie was an exception. Don't get me wrong, I love a good pizza pie just as much as anyone else. And this movie did a pretty job of embracing Italian cuisine while not playing up business suits too much. So, that's good. Joe Pesci's character is good because he loves his mother. Maybe they could have had more construction workers in it, like with the Sopranos- would have been too much like Grand Theft Auto though. That is probably the appeal of the movie. It focuses more on the family... ha, ha, ha. I like how Paulie never rides in a car, but will still use a phone. Watch the movie to find out how they are able to make a quick buck in America while avoiding the authorities.
