Suffocating I would be lying if I said that the idea of another saw film with a different, more socially substantial twist with relation to today's modern foreground wasn't intriguing. This with addition to its stellar cast, a more capital agenda in terms of its budget, and a wonderfully approachable new aesthetic, Spiral was set to entertain both new and old fans alike.
In spite of this, Spiral flusters and fails at being either of the genres it wants to be. It feels like a divorce of the genres of torture porn and high octane thriller and instead falls into the limbo of mediocrity. Why? The gore toned down enough to bore old fans, yet too much to entice newer fans. Story trying the same old formula that we were promised would be different, made even more sour by arguably the most intolerable plot twist of the series. All this is capped off by the nauseating pacing, which never fails to slow down yet it turn allows no room for the digestion of the plot and what is presented before us and a result suffocates the viewer, not allowing for the process of the scene before the next.
Albeit a fair few entertaining aspects, Chris Rock, the traps and the soundtrack, Spiral is a thorn in one's side as it remains as lackluster as the previous installments with the hefty addition of pure unadulterated disappointment dashed into the entertaining mess which is Spiral : From the Book of Saw.
