Deadwood
(2004)

Worth the watch for sure, even if flawed
This series strengths lie in its gritty storytelling approach, unique and engaging characters, and its fantastic actors, minus Timothy Olyphant who is stiff and awful... laughably bad. The costume design is great. The set is commendable, except we got tired of it always being muddy... South Dakota doesn't get enough constant rain for always muddy streets. And winter wasn't a thing. Also, got frustrated with some storylines not being explained or developed well enough to understand the characters' motives or storyline trajectories. Some viewers may find the language frustrating, but we loved it. What do I mean? They tried to use the vernacular of the times as much as they could. Can be confusing, it's very different from today's American English, but this nuance gave authenticity to the time period, and it felt like you were stepping back in time. Plus, it was just plain fun to listen to! If you're thinking about watching this for its historical retelling of the founders of Deadwood, give that up. The creators and writers did not follow history, except for maybe a couple of characters. They used real names, but not real tales of the founders' lives, and they added new characters. Would like to give Deadwood 8 or 9 stars because it felt unique and the acting was fabulous, but the weaknesses won't allow me to. It's a fun ride though - I do recommend you watch it!

Yellowstone
(2018)

Off the rails
This show is a train off the rails, making it hard to enjoy - it's too unbelievable. The story lines are good, so I can't understand why the creators move through them so very fast... where's the development? Why does each episode have multiple major things happen? Why do story lines that could last multiple episodes come and go in one? Off the rails!

The hype about Yellowstone made me excited to start the series, but I find myself hate-watching it, and making fun of it. I doubt I'll stick with it, I'm 3/4th through Season 2. I'm shocked by the strong reviews. However, I will say that the acting, production, setting, and music are excellent, but that's true of a lot of shows - shows that also have good pacing and story development. (Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Mad Men...)

If you like to see bad thing, after bad thing, after bad thing happen, and bad person, after bad person, after bad person behaving deplorably - you'll enjoy Yellowstone!

You
(2018)

Differently entertaining. Enjoyed all 3 seasons.
Just finished Season 3, and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it got a bit too sexy for my taste... not meant for kids or impressionable teenagers. Each season offers twists, modern story telling, and superb acting. Season 3's ensemble was my favorite... Dylan Arnold is my new favorite young actor! I hope to see him in many things for years to come. Both my husband and I enjoy this series, which is nice - can be hard to find shows and movies that holds the interest of both of us. Curious and excited to see if Season 4, when it comes out, can live up to its predecessors. It's been so good so far!

The Handmaid's Tale
(2017)

Didn't end where it should have
Somber. Dystopian. Think twice about watching this during our difficult 2020 times, because this is the opposite of uplifting. It is very good, but when successful book adaptations go beyond the original story line, it's dicey. This series went beyond and shouldn't have. With its serious dark tone, we as viewers were ready to be done. Ready for success for the good people/characters. It should have rapped up at the end of Season 2. Instead, if we stick through it, more depression and sadness comes. I got half way through Season 3 and had to stop. Totally frustrated. Season 1 = 10 stars. Season 2 = 8.5 stars, would have been 10, but the finale stole that away. Season 3 = 4? 5? 6? stars. Can't say. Can't bring myself to continue. Hulu got greedy when choosing to continue this series

Dead to Me
(2019)

Christina Applegate's best work to date!
Entertaining, binge-worthy show. The entire cast is excellent, but Christina Applegate, in particular, shines. The storyline and writing are tight. Doesn't move too fast, just the right speed that keeps you wanting more - binging. It's more serious than funny, especially as the story develops.

Go with an open mind; create your own interpretation
I left the theater thinking, "Huh, that wasn't what I expected." And that's because I had the unfortunate experience of listening to my morning radio show personalities provide their take on the movie beforehand. Bottom line:. This movie is artist at heart, and a thinker, rather than your simple, entertaining horror flick. If you expect a clear cut horror movie with racial lessons, as Jordan Peele did with his "Get Out," you'll be disappointed. I feel this speaks to Peele's bountiful creativity... he didn't recreate what he's already done. Go into the movie with no one else's interpretation. The people I've discussed it with took different messages away... I will share that initially leaving the theater I was irritated by not being simply entertained, but by the following morning I was enjoying ruminating on the story and piecing together my interpretation - which was totally different from my radio DJ's! I will agree with some reviewers that Mr. Peele packed too much into the movie, but overall, I enjoyed it, would like to see it again, and recommend it if you are someone who can appreciate an artist scary movie requiring thoughtfulness, and that's fun to discuss with friends.

Killing Eve
(2018)

Fantastic protagonist-villain storyline
Our family of three, parents and a male teen, loved this show. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are spot on. Can't believe Ms. Comer didn't get more nominations for her performance... she's my favorite "bad guy" ever! Love the strong female characters. Very much looking forward to seeing Season 2!!!

Made in Heaven
(2019)

Binged entire season in 2 days
I'm an Anglo-Saxon who craves movies and television from other lands, both for entertainment and enlightenment. "Made in Heaven" provided both. Very good series. Only complaints: felt like the roles were filled by primarily light-skinned Indian actors, making it feel inauthentic at times, the protagonist's husband's feelings were wildly inconsistent, and the wedding planners were unrealisticly included in family meetings in some scenes. Other than those nuisances, I found the show entertaining and edgy with a modern-day commentary on the state of the country. My thanks to Amazon Prime for bringing it to my Fire Stick TV. For those with children, be warned - there's fairly strong sexual content.

Prison Break
(2005)

Good story line badly executed
In today's 2018 world of fabulous viewing variety and great production, it's almost unfair to watch something from 2005 and expect too much. But with the strong rating of 8.4/10 on IMDb I thought it would at least be intriguing and that I'd feel it was close to the 8.4 rating. Instead I am very disappointed. This show is entertaining, but not nearly "all that". The story line and concept = very good. The character execution (pun both intended and not) = poor. The writers and directors needed to take more time to develop and build the characters, and the acting was so-so. It was hard to become invested on emotional level and there was no footing for how this break out was going to work, because the main character never actually built relationships with the prisoners he needed in order to successfully break out. More time to character development, insight about their backgrounds, and how they operated would have allowed me buy into the plot. Unfortunately, that just didn't happen. Bottom line - great story idea, but rushed and poorly done. I would love to see it re-done properly one day!

The Middle
(2009)

Refreshing
This show represents middle class American families - our homes aren't perfectly decorated or maintained, our parenting isn't always what it should be, our family members are unique, and we're just trying to get through the day. And life is pretty sweet just the way it is! It's a funny, charming and heart warming show. Our family always relates to it and we appreciate that it's a clean show that we can all watch together - teens and parents. But do be warned, middle class America enjoys beer; characters in the show will imbibe, in case you find that inappropriate. The acting is spot on and the ensemble is perfect.

Bridget Jones's Diary
(2001)

As good as it gets for a Rom-Com
I'm a romantic comedy geek and this is my favorite of the genre. If you don't enjoy romantic comedies, don't bother rating this production or any other in this category. I dislike sci-fi, so I don't rate it; it'd just be bad. I'm convinced that the bad ratings given to Bridget Jones are from people who dislike the genre, because this movie is just plain fun entertainment! It is more comedy than romance, so if you're more about the rom than the com, keep that in mind.
