Masters of Horror: Homecoming
(2005)
Episode 6, Season 1

Dante's Political Horror Hits Home
This isn't your typical zombie movie, and that's what I appreciated about it. This is a film adaptation of the story "Death and Suffrage" which tells the story of a man who spends his time spinning lies for a president much like our own.

The dead come back to vote. They want their voices heard and our protagonist vows that those voices will be heard. "If I could have one wish..." he says.

This movie is political satire at its best. It also has characters with emotional depth and an analyzation of the darker side of humanity.

There is a story by Poppy Z. Brite that comes to mind as I am thinking about this movie. In the story, Poppy says that it is not the dead that we fear, lumbering forward, but the thought that they may show us what is beyond the grave and perhaps tell us what we do not want to hear.

Either you love this movie or you hate it. Amongst my friends, its reception has been adored. Some horror fans seem to ache for more blood and guts and less of a personal story line. I, however, highly recommend this entry into the Masters of Horror collection.

Masters of Horror: Chocolate
(2005)
Episode 5, Season 1

Love or Hate
Regarding the first season of Masters of Horror, viewers tend to either love or hate "Chocolate" and "Dance With the Dead." "Dance with the Dead was one of my favorite episodes but I am biased when it comes to things written by Richard Christian Matheson.

This episode is slow-paced but well directed and well acted in. It focuses on a psychic connection between two people. Garris has played a fascinating role in the creation of this series. He's written some of the episodes, including ones that he didn't direct, like "The V Word" and has done a great job gathering these directors.

However, I feel that I must defend Eli Roth from the comments of Jonny Numb. Quote: "by the way, how on EARTH can you call Eli Roth a 'master' of ANYTHING?" Some people may hate the things that Eli Roth has created, Hostile and Cabin Fever, but he is a masterful director. Besides, what's the point of bashing him when he plays no role in the series. Spoiler: Eli Roth is not in the series. At all. Period. Spoiler II: I love Eli Roth.

Blood Gnome
(2004)

One Of The Best Worst Movies Ever. . .
This movie is like a soft-core porn with a decent horror movie premise. Add a bit of bondage, HP Lovecraft, gratuitous nudity, in case the audience blinked some more gratuitous nudity, some bondage, in case the audience blinked some more bondage, and now you have Blood Gnome.

The film makers can proudly look down into the cess pool of cinematic crud and proudly say that: "That turd is mine!" A crime scene investigator discovers a bizarre series of crimes in the BDSM community and finds that they are perpetrated by evil gnomes, that only he can see. Our lead character even has a back story. This is a very ambitiously bad movie.

It was made on a low budget, but I don't consider that an excuse for making a bad movie. However, when a person realizes that they are making a bad movie and they decide to make it properly terrible, you get a Great Bad movie. If Ed Wood had taken a moment to truly bask in the glory of his horrific masterpieces, and found the humor in them, then the movies probably would have gained a following during his lifetime. Alas, now we see his Best Worst movies ever as trashy gems of an age ago.

Blood Gnome is a trashy gem which borders between the realm of a sloppily made horror movie and a well-done porno. It's worth watching if you really want to pick it apart and examine it. It's fun to watch as long as you realize that you're not watching a good movie.

The Substitute 3: Winner Takes All
(1999)

Bad Movie But Superior Acting From Frank Gerrish
Terrible movie. I will be the first to admit it, but you have to admire Frank Gerrish. He's a great Utah actor who excels in any part that he is given, regardless of the movie's quality. His role spares this movie from being a bad memory. The school scenes are filmed at the Salt Lake Community College and our main actress is a professor, but for some reason it is more like a high-school.

The screenplay is terrible. Give me the screenplay and give me Frank and you will have a conclusion to a trilogy worthy of. . .well, at least worthy of watching.

The direction of this movie is. . .to put it nicely, lacking. But honestly, the poor guy was working with what he was given. For a low budget the directing is tolerable, the screenplay still a disaster, and the characters are terrible. With the exception of our hero and Frank Gerrish. If they were given better lines. . .Give me the power to remake this movie. It's ripe. It's asking to be parodied in its absurdity but seeing its potential stops me from burning it out of my memory.

I hereby announce my plans to begin production of Copyrighted Name: Redux. Who cares if they killed of Frank Gerrish's characters. If Uma Thurman can dig her way out of a grave then so can Frank.
