A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
(2019)

A story for all who are willing to look inward
Anyone who has had pain in their life or who has been angry about things that have happened to them should find a useful message in this film. That's probably a lot of us.

The characters are well written and performed with a special emphasis on Hanks' Rogers. I went in wondering how such a well known actor would play such a well known person yet he did become our beloved Mr Rogers on screen complete with intentional slower pace and gentle nature.

The true power of the film though, comes from the care that Fred shows for Lloyd, at times seeking him out to help him find his way through a lifetime of anger that came from resentment. Lloyd calls himself broken but Fred disagrees. How many in the audience might feel the same way as Lloyd?

As someone who has seen most of Mr Rogers' interviews I was happy to notice some of the most important points shown in the film. I suggest you search for the interviews as they will give you even more of what you were feeling during and hopefully after this film.

When this medium works it not only tells a story, it helps you become more aware of who you are and how you feel. This film left me missing Fred Rogers and understanding that I can be a better person to those I love and forgive those who caused me pain.

I'm Dying Up Here
(2017)

The Cancellation is Tragic
I'm disappointed in Showtine for pulling the plug on this witty trip back to the early days of stand up.

The well written dialogue gave the ensemble cast plenty of opportunities to show their gifts for comedic timing and acting range alike.

It's sad when pay channels act like the networks. I'm going to miss this show.

The Romanoffs: The One That Holds Everything
(2018)
Episode 8, Season 1

This is the one we've waited for since the first episode!
It's fitting that early on we see two of the characters from the first episode since that one and this one share a sense of setting things right.

There are multiple stories/flashbacks within the story yet you can easily follow Simon's life, how he was treated and the difficulties he faced.

It's the resolution of the problems Simon faced that had me praising the story and hoping for more episodes like this one.

A Private War
(2018)

Pike is riveting and you'll be drawn in.
If you have one empathic bone in your body you can't help but feel for the people Marie Colvin wrote about and Marie herself, despite her self medication and arguably self destructive nature.

Pike plays Marie as so driven by her need to tell these stories that she regularly throws her safety away and allows herself to be emotionally damaged as well.

The movie builds to the extreme violence in Syria and one scene in particular that will haunt me due to the rampant and indiscriminate death rained down by government forces.

While the supporting cast does a great job, Pike is amazing and should garner Oscar attention for it. This will be a difficult movie to watch but Marie's story is important because you should really know all her stories.

The Vietnam War
(2017)

Like all tragedies you wish you could change it...
I've absorbed much of what's been offered to date including books, other documentaries, and the films detailing this time of terrible struggle for our troops, the Amount erican people, and those who fought on both sides or were caught in the crossfire in Viet Nam.

This collection of ten episodes is the most comprehensive description of what happened including insightful commentary from those who were there.

For those who think the content is politicized, that battle was fought long ago. You only have to listen to those who were there to know the truth and this collection of their moving testimonies at times brought me to tears.

If you want to know what happened or if you want to grant the wish of many who lived through that time and learn from our mistakes so we don't repeat them, this is required viewing.
