Brightburn
(2019)

Brightburn
The main issue with Brightburn is that Chronicle and Joker exist, both movies astutely tell the origin story of a bad guy and succeed where Brightburn stumbles. The cast, especially Elizabeth Banks and David Dunhem do really good here and there is enough here to possibly make sequels and potentially do something more with this premise. The horror and slasher elements, violence and gore are also top notch with the film refusing to pull back many times when it could have. All and all, Brightburn is just OK.

Shark Night 3D
(2011)

Shark Night
Laughably bad, talented young actors here and some of whom who have gone on to having success in Hollywood but this film is just bad. I've seen bad shark movies before, but this easily takes the cake for some of the worst I've ever seen. Its essentially every bad slasher film you've ever seen with sharks instead of masked killers.

Gladiator
(2000)

Gladiator
While the CGI certainly hasnt aged well, Gladiator is one helluva fine film. The film is incredibly well shot, the performances are on point. Joaquin Pheonix is absolutely incredible, displaying himself as a sadistic and truly despicable villian

BlacKkKlansman
(2018)

Blackkklansman
An absolute must see! It's a bit slow at certain points but the film is easily one of the best Spike Lee joints I've seen in a while.

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

Dark Fate
Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are incredible in this and Hamilton doesn't skip a beat as Sarah Connor. Dark Fate represents a nice return to form for the franchise after Salvation and Genysis (I liked Rise of the Machines so STFU) and does really good at getting thr franchise back on track. Its fairly similar to T2 in terms of plot and story which some could see as lazy and I would have done some things differently but from what I saw I liked. The new cast of characters were really good, The legion Terminator was a really convincing baddie and the young girl or the new Sarah Connor did extremely well for a relatively new actress. From what I saw, I enjoyed Dark Fate and it's easily the best sequel since Rise of the Machines.

Happy Death Day 2 U
(2019)

Happy Death Day 2U
A solid sequel to a good film that let's itself down with a boring sciencey timeloop subplot and a cheesy overly romantic ending.

Stronger
(2017)

Stronger
Jake Gyllenhaal is incredible in this, an absolute revelation. It's not like most inspirational biopics, Jeff struggles with PTSD, alcoholism and drug abuse while the effects of this tragic event and what happened to him take their role on his family, the city of Boston and his girlfriend (Tatiana Maslany). Its an incredible take on biopics, showing that it's not all about inspirational speeches and Rocky style montages.

Blue Jay
(2016)

Blue Jay
Filmed entirely in black and white with only 3 actors credited in the film, Blue Jay was an absolute revelation. The two main actors share incredible chemistry and Sarah Paulson is absolutely incredible in this. A indy gem and a must watch for everyone

Booksmart
(2019)

Booksmart
I get that Superbad comparisons, SuperBad was a one-of-a-kind comedy that is more about friendship than anything else. Booksmart is just as good though, Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Skyler Gisondo and especially Billie Lourd, who stole every scene she appeared in. Like Superbad, Booksmart is a smart, heartwarming, extremely funny and quotable movie about friendship, growing up and moving on.

Point Blank
(2019)

Point Blank
Obviously the metacritic reviews dont paint the prettiest picture but if you take a look for yourself, you'll find that Point Blank is a solid if not mindless action thriller. Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie are good, capable leads and the direction is solid enough to mask the narrative flaws.

Secret Obsession
(2019)

Secret Obsession
A by-the-book thriller with few thrills and even fewer scares. On the positive side though, Brenda Song plays an impressive lead and Dennis Haysbert is always provides a welcomed screen presence. The direction provides some decent tension in some moments but the film fails in story and writing. The movie does nothing to avoid the many thriller cliches and really let's it self down before it has a chance to get going.

Bridge of Spies
(2015)

Bridge of Spies
Set during the Cold War with rising tensions between the United States and Russia, Bridge of Spies is an incredibly well acted and thought out thriller. It's a bit slow and heavy on the dialogue but its essentially the story of a regular guy, caught in the middle of a conflict between the 2 nations. It's a very good film, it took me a bit to actually watch it and finish it but that should take nothing away from the movie.

Aftermath
(2017)

Aftermath
Arnold Schwarzenegger was absolutely incredible in this, he shows great range and depth and really proved that even at this stage in his career, he can be a dramatic actor even though hes known more for his action films. I found most of the performances to be very good honestly, but where this film really falters was the writing and the screenplay. If they actually stuck more to what actually happened then the film would have had more opportunities to shine. With that being said, this is an above average film with a great performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Instant Family
(2018)

Instant Family
A genuinely heartfelt story that sheds light on the struggles of adoption on both sides of the fence. The actors all bring it here with Rose Bryne, Isabella Moner, Octavia Spencer and even Mark Wahlberg churning in a very real performance showing much versatility from his usual tough guy action star films. Instant Family was a pleasant surprise

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
(2019)

King of the Monsters
For 5 years I have waited for this movie, was it worth it? Absolutely! Was it what I hoped for? Sure! Was it more? Unfortunately not but with that being said Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a good film. It has its narrative faults and obvious character faults but the special effects, fight scenes, shots and overall tone are very good. I really enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance and Vera Farmiga though the problem with this film to me was that it introduced too many new characters, most of which are irrelevant to the story and end up taking away time from an already weak central plot involving The Russells, Monarch and Charles Dance's eco-terrorist group. On top of that, although I consider this a minor complaint because in the end it served a purpose but I also felt overwhelmed by all the monsters in this movie when I feel like they should have just stuck the conflict between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidora (whose a more convincing villian than Charles Dance's character unfortunately) because it overstuffs the plot but at the end I can see why it served a purpose. Still, I found King of the Monsters to be a good film. Unfortunately it suffers a bit from sequelitis as its nowhere near as good as the 2014 Godzilla, which gets undeserved flack from people whod rather watch a 3 hour Michael Bay Transformers porn than watch a slow burning, intensely paced monster movie similar to Jaws or the original Godzilla from the 50s. I'm still excited for Godzilla v Kong and further Monsterverse entries just as long as they pump the brakes now while trying to build these monsters and characters trying not to get lost in the shuffle.

February
(2015)

Blackcoats daughter
A very superbly acted, creepy, unsettling and albeit pretentious film

Pearl Harbor
(2001)

Pearl harbor
A good film to sit and watch but that's because the acting and the action lifts the film above a very weak script. The love triangle dynamic is almost completely botched, where Josh Hartnett falls for Kate beckinsale (while I dont blame him) almost instantly because Ben Affleck died and other reasons that are never quite explained. Overlooking the blatant jingoism and historical inaccuracy, like for instance the whole reason the Japanese attacked us is completely left out for no reason other than for Bay to push Jingoistic right wing propaganda. HOWEVER, I'll give the film this the films main action sequence involving the attack on Pearl harbor is very well put together and the film, in my opinion poses some interesting questions about how much the United States knew about the attack prior to it happening and that they could have possibly avoided it. It's easy to crap on this film, most of the criticisms are legitimate (I didnt even mention the poor dialogue) but the film is entertaining enough to watch and enjoy.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
(2019)

Detective pikachu
Ryan Reynolds is fantastic as pikachu in a genuinely enjoyable film. Nicely shot and directed with cool Pokemon but the human characters are shallow and bland and share almost no chemistry with eachother. The villian is pretty by the book, "humanity sucks, I'm doing this to save humanity from themselves." Other than that, tis a good movie.

Triple Frontier
(2019)

Triple Frontier
A tightly directed thriller that suffers from a few minor script bumps. The ambitious cast, great shots and mounting tension keeps the film afloat

All Eyez on Me
(2017)

All Eyez On Me
Clearly attempting to capitalize off the success of Straight Outta Compton, All Eyez on Me is a decent biopic that glosses over and ignores what made Tupac a legend. Focusing mostly on his rap career, his rise to fame, his conflicts with Biggie and Bad Boy Records and his untimely and still unsolved murder, it glosses over his activism, his poetry and his captivating artistry. Tupac was an incredible human being who died too young and this film doesnt do enough justice to his legend

Ready Player One
(2018)

Ready Player One
A good film yet underwhelming film saved mostly by Spielberg's direction and fine performances by Olivia Cook and Ben Mendelsohn. The story is extremely high on hollow pop culture references but extremely short on story and character development and the main character does little to stand out or even seem likable. Aside from that, Ready Player One is a good film but it could have been greater had the story been stronger

Bird Box
(2018)

Birdbox
Essentially a poor man's Quiet Place meets The Happening. Sandra Bullock is fantastic in this, she really is but her performance alone cant fix this film's glaring narrative issues.

Glass
(2019)

Glass
After a string of successes in "The Visit" and "Split" after a major career downturn, M Night Shyamalan returns to the big screen with his Unbreakable sequel 19 years after the release of the first one. The performances, especially James McAvoy are top notch and the film as a whole is not as bad as being advertised. Though yes, the ending is really bad as it almost undoes the entire film, the first half of the movie more than make up the price of admission

The Punisher
(2004)

Not perfect but still very good
I've seen both the extended cut and theatrical cuts of this film and in terms of being a feature length film, this was and still is a fine movie about revenge, justice and punishment.

Thomas Jane plays Frank Castle/The Punisher perfectly, showing great depth and ability to a stoic character. John Travolta also plays a fine villian in Howard Saint but it doesnt help the character is thinly written to be something more than a cardboard cutout mob boss.

As I said, even in 2019 and with Netflix's adaptation being (somewhat) successful this is still a very good movie. It has obvious flaws, especially in the second half but "The Punisher" is still a fine film about revenge, punishment, justice and letting go.

Aquaman
(2018)

Aquaman
Great performance from Jason Mamoa, great visuals and a ton of action make this an obvious win for the DCEU after a fairly rough start with Suicide Squad, Batman V Superman and Justice League(all of which I enjoyed). It's not nearly as good as Wonder Woman or Man of Steel but with that being said, it's still a pretty good movie. It's not perfect by any means, dialogue, pacing and narrative especially in the first half really bog this film down. I liked this movie and I definitely recommend it to those who enjoy action comic book movies
