La fine fleur
(2020)

straight through the nose into your heart
This movie is a modest production and and does without intricate storyline or dialogues. Disguised as a comedy, it evolves into a poetic gut punch that leaves you hurting, mesmerised and in love with the characters. Great cast. French delicacy.

parasite
Cinematographically really an awesome film, great actors, storytelling, gripping. But maybe it´s only me, I can´t make out a plot that ties all together, unfortunately. So it remains a bunch of snipets, greatly shot clips, but the story loses itself if not in the worst of all, in oceandeep hopelessness, it is the saddest experience leaving the theatre. 9 for the pictures, 1 for the story. sorry no.

Le grand bain
(2018)

poetic comedy
Brilliant French comedy. Subtle characters, fantastic settings, the camera is amazing. Very poetic writing. Superb cast. Laughing and crying for two hours. The topic of male synchronized swimming is really secondary, this movie is extraordinary, the script is razorsharp. No wonder it was a huge hit in France. It´s genious. The people who created this piece you would just die for to have as friends.

High Life
(2018)

This movie needs a warning sign
If you want to know how boredom feels translated into physical pain, go see this one. I can´t even think of the time I have sat through a whole terrible experience like this. A Ghost Story was similarly agonizing, this one killed it though. I hope this movie will be the tombstone to the genre ´Mystery´. Take a philosophical question or two, drink a bottle of wine, write down on a post-it some notes, drink another bottle of wine. Call up some filmmaker friends, and start filming. Opening a door, two minutes. Shot down the hallway, another two minutes. Get sixty scenes, you got the movie. Tune in to a night time ambient radio station, you got the score. If they play some occasional experimental jazz in between, doesn´t matter - the quirkier, the better. Call up some art film festivals - bingo. I´m sorry, but this should have never made it to the broad distribution.

Rocketman
(2019)

no aspiration
Slowly creeping disappointment, growing day by day. Although Egerton does an amazing job and there are some fantastic scenes, I mean amazing ones (but quite a few creepy ones as well), the script seems so shallow, the dramatic life of Elton John becomes as superficial as icing sugar and heartfelt like a friendship promise on cocaine. You can get the feeling this whole joint is simply the commercial hop on the biopic train and to milk that cow while it lasts.

Under the Silver Lake

I´ve been to L.A., I know of the love of people for this place, so I can live with that that they love to create a mythical atmosphere around their lives. So this movie goes. References, pop culture, life without a purpose, all in the game. Well made, but it really loses the plot at some point, it does become pointless, unless the point was to depict that there just is none. Then really well proven, like the snake that swallows its own tail.

Ben Is Back

This movie gave me the a feeling of incompletion. The acting is really great, the story off beat, but Ben´s mom is depictes almost as impeccable. So the whole plot becomes like a glimpse of an episode of something, but then it finishes. Produced for a different agenda, maybe. Amazon? Rather unsatisfying, although the opioid crisis is an important social issue. Good to be addressed, but this movie left me with the feeling of having wasted my time, unfortunately.

Climax

I can see the idea. But I am sorry to say, the acting was not believable, the reactions neither - what drugs should cause this? I´m feeling strange, I´m feeling strange.....flicking into aggression into sheer violence. Sorry no, this crazy behaviour is so unrelated to drugs, it is only grotesque.

Compelling movie, doesn´t leave you off the hook a minute, fantastic story, striking performance.

Widows
(2018)

YES
The trailers sell WIDOWS as gangster/thriller/action movie. To my surprise instead of being a mainstream blockbuster, it is an arthouse movie. I loved it. Amazing production design, the acting is outstanding. Cinematography fantastic. Quite subtle, brilliant plot. I am so happy I went to see this movie. Though I can understand that people who want a pure entertainment action type of film like Ocean´s 4 1/2 including the popcorn and nachos, they might get disappointed. Outstanding piece of work by Steve McQueen.
