The Ranger
(2018)

Very watchable
Frightfest opening night film, and very watchable as a VoD release when you get a chance.

Nothing new in the concept, slasher in the woods picking off a group of teens, but the execution (ha ha!) was good and there were a couple of aspects which made this a fun genre offering.

First, the punk setting and music. OK green room did it first, but this was much more fun and retro.

Second, the relationship between slasher and final girl offered an engaging spin on procedings.

Overall, if you are a genre fan then this should be on your watch list.

The Babysitter
(2017)

Watchable
Actually not really horror as not scary, but plenty of blood and gore. It works pretty well as a comedy. A bullied schoolkid who is frightened of everything has a "hot" babysitter who is into satanic blood sacrifices with her "hot" friends who sneak in when she thinks he's asleep and turn his living room into a makeshift satanic temple. They catch him spying and it turns into a kind of Home Alone meets Tucker and Dale. Entirely disposable viewing, but also perfectly entertaining during its run time and not the worst thing on Netflix.

Blood Punch
(2014)

Fun black comedy 6/10
Groundhog Day meets John Dies at the End. OK the plot was nothing like JDatE, but the tone really reminded me of that film.

Refreshing (if not entirely original) premise with characters that grew to be likeable after a rocky start.

Mostly good acting and great cinematography.

Ultimately pretty silly, but well worth giving your time to if you are in the mood for a light hearted horror evening.

Creep
(2014)

Probably best found footage 8/10
I loved this film. The set up actually worked, and there was none of the usual "but why are you still filming??" BS that spoils most found footage.

The acting was great, the characters were great and it was surprisingly scary. No spoilers, but for some reason Duplass in a mask was weirdly frightening!

It was even better on a rewatch, knowing the ending, the acting and the characters were that good.

The Ritual
(2017)

Great film, let down ending 8/10
I did like the film, and recommend it, but it fell apart for me at the end by going too silly with the mythology, and (without spoilers) almost cliche with how the "locals" in the forest behaved.

But - until that point it was tense, scary, engaging with GREAT acting and a set of non-cliche, very believable characters. In fact the character dynamics were probably the best I ever saw in a horror film. The "flashback"-like sequences for the main character were superb.

Highly recommended as a Netflix pick.

Charismata
(2017)

Very underrated, but... 7/10
...but the marketing is TOTALLY misleading. The DVD box basically is for a different film! It's like the producers chickened out at the last minute and did desperate packaging to boost sales.

What it is, is like a 90 minute X-Files episode, but in England, and Scully is the main character, and Mulder is a sexist bully a-hole, and all the cops are sexist bully a-holes, and the perp is a sexist bully a-hole satanist. And Scully has to deal with all the gaslighting and like save the day.

Good acting, especially Scully who is GREAT. Good cinematography, good special effects, no silly jump scares, surprisingly funny at times, overall very underrated.

I hated the ending. The last minute was like the producers chickened out again and left something for the gore kiddies. Would have been 9/10 with a different ending.

Halloween
(2018)

I don't like slashers but I loved this 9/10
Not a slasher fan but my we caught the world premiere at the film festival. And... wow, just great. "It does what it says on the tin" - only better. No spoilers - but scary, gory, engaging and surprisingly funny. Great acting. I'm not converted to be a slasher fan, but this gets my big thumbs up. Bravo.

Selfie from Hell
(2018)

Poor effort 2/10
Ok the acting was good except for the sister character, and cinematography solid enough.

But... oh no, no other redeeming features. Lots of silly jump scares and a real paint by numbers approach to horror. Oh let's go on the dark web, and I'll talk to myself as I'm on google so the audience knows what's going on. It was like copy-paste from lots of better films with no heart or originality. This social media horror genre is one I'll be avoiding, too many turkeys.

Hereditary
(2018)

Good, if overrated 6/10
Great acting, great cinematography but a problem: characters acting in unbelievable ways. Not in a "don't go into the dark basement alone you dumb horror movie character" way, it's not that type of film, but what these supposed-to-be-believable characters do in their lives. No spoilers, but I'll say "party" and "crash" ;)

All that said, still a very solid 6/10
