The Good Place: Whenever You're Ready
(2020)
Episode 13, Season 4

I get what they were trying to do...
... but it kinda felt like everyone just committing suicide, which is not really the "happy ending" vibe it feels like the writers seem to have thought it was going to be. It did bring up some interesting philosophical and theological questions, but I disagree with their conclusions. I suppose a review isn't the best place for a philosophical and theological treatise though, so I won't get into that. But it was still just a depressing ending with a kinda depressing message.

Also there were a couple of plot holes, but at this point in the series that's basically unavoidable. After all, the series is about asking questions we don't really have the answers too, so some things are bound to not make sense.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
(2022)

I really wanted to like this...
I was actually really excited by the trailer. I've loved Marvel's more comedic shows like Ms Marvel and Hawkeye, and She-Hulk is a classic character from the comics who I'm honestly surprised it took this long to bring into the MCU. But this show is just... bad.

From the weird obsession with making sure Captain America has had sex (didn't going back in time and ending up with Peggy already do that?) to the infamous twerking scene, the writers seem to have tried to make the character "relatable" but have only succeeded in making her an annoying party girl.

The characters so far are all poorly written, noticeably the men who are all either horrible/misogynistic or comedic buffoons, even already established characters like Hulk and Wong. Hulk I can give a pass to because the Professor Hulk character-arc (or Smart Hulk as he is called in the show) was already introduced; but Wong seems like a completely different character entirely with no explanation. Ironically in one of the episodes Walters joked that Wong gives the show "Twitter armor for a week," but by being completely out of character he was probably the worst thing about that episode. (I will give that episode props for the Madisynn character, who was well acted and funny, although again, her ending up befriending a Sopranos-watching Wong seemed out of character for him.)

I'm still hoping the show improves, and I'm otherwise mostly happy with the direction Marvel is going, but this show has been a huge disappointment so far.

Battle of the Sexes
(2017)

Forced and Awkward
This movie is about how Billie Jean King cheated on her loving husband with her lesbian hairdresser.

The filmmaker apparently thinks you're supposed to overlook adultery because... I don't know, LGBTQ something?

Billie Jean's husband may be the only not flawed character, and he's apparently supposed to be... what? the bad guy?

I came to see a movie of women's empowerment and I somehow found myself almost rooting for Bobby Riggs, especially since they made a point to say his chauvinism was just for show. Given that it's an actual historical event I'm glad Billie Jean won, but I mean damn. Seriously, what was the point of making Billie Jean a cheater? The whole movie just felt awkward and forced.

I look forward to a women's empowerment movie that doesn't somehow accidentally make women the villain of the story.
