Urumi
(2011)

Worth the watch
Santhosh Sivan has always awed the audience with his fantastic camera work and great songs. Urumi also offers the viewers a visual treat. It is backed up by a wonderful story line which is a fantasy mixed with action and drama. Prithviraj proves why he is highly regarded in the Malayalam Movie industry as a good actor. His roles as a to be pauper and the patriotic but revengeful rebel has been portrayed with great vigor and talent. Prabhu Deva provides the comic effect as well as some nice moves. I personally felt Genelia to be underused but she does justice to her role. Jagathy as the villainous minister is excellent. Nithya Menon looks cute and awesome and really sizzles on screen.

The camera work is typical of Santhosh Sivan. Great angle shots, nice precision shots. There's a shot of an awesome water fall, don't know the location. But the shot is just breath taking. In one fighting scene if you look closer and pay attention, you could see a dragon fly buzz in front of the camera with great clarity.

I generally thought that there could have been some more action sequences.

Overall 8 out of 10

Pranchiyettan and the Saint
(2010)

Moving and Refreshing
Viewers generally go out for the movies to be entertained. Thats exactly what Renjith has managed to do with this wonderful movie. The movie starts off with Mammootty being introduced by some ghosts. That initially made me feel that it would be something like Shyamalan's movies. But I was totally mistaken and taken aback by what followed.

The story telling is some thing that one would find remarkable in the movie. The feats of the so called Mammootty character 'Pranji Yettan' is depicted very skillfully and meticulously. He thrives for the respect and recognition that he always wanted. He tries to become a better man but still no one seems to take his seriously. The manages to become a helper of the needy in spite of being a wealthy person. How his friends try to become a well know personality is the crux of the story.

The Thrissur slang has been used very cleverly in the movie and manages to chuckle the audience. Though not used very dramatically it stands out as the best feature of the film. Innocent, Tiny Tom, Siddique, Jagathy and Khusboo play their roles to the at most of perfection not to mention how great Mammootty was.

I would give it a 8 out of 10 for entertainment.

Slumdog Millionaire
(2008)

Excellent and engaging Movie
Words cannot describe the beauty of this movie. It starts with a curse and ends with a dance/song. The journey that a boy makes from being a Slumdog to a millionaire is the plot as the title suggests. But it is not only that. It shows the conditions of the slums in Bombay, what children have to suffer being a part of that and how they are exploited by people. There are moments in the movie which just stick in your mind. Like the scene when young Jamal falls into a pit full of poop and arises to see Amitabh Bachan. The scene when a young boy is made to learn and sing 'Oh Lord Ghanashyama' written by the famous poet Surdas and then getting his eyes amputated was one of the most gripping scenes of the movie. Salim pulling a revolver to kill a mob king was another excellent scene.

Several factors of the Mumbai slums, like the Hindu- Muslim riots, child labor and prostitution were shown in the movie with great art. I also thought that Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan did great justice to the roles given to them. The ending was some what that of a typical Indian movie. A R Rehman was at his best with the background scores and he clearly deserves an Oscar.

A movie I feel has to show exactness and must be entertaining when showing it. It must have a moral/study and must teach the audience a thing or two. This movie has it. It shows that destiny is something that is made by an individual and not the society that he lives in. His fate is chosen by him, by the way he chooses to live his life. This movie is a must see.

Taare Zameen Par
(2007)

Great Movie
I saw this movie today for the second time and felt that I need to write a review as a viewer. I come to IMDb and I see over hundred comments given ! Enough said about the class of the movie. I am not going to say anything more that my friends have said. I just wanted to jot down the reasons why this film was different from all the other year releases.

1. Great story line said straight from the heart, clean and without any melodrama.

2. Great direction and casting. Aamir proves his strength in direction as well.

3. Wonderful dialogs. Aamir's dialogs to Darsheel's father are all direct and every one of them hits the spot.

4. The story is said from the child's view and not the teacher who helps him. This I thought was the greatest feature of all.

5. The film has a message. It tries to assert the fact that all children, mentally challenged or not, has their own strengths and they must be groomed so that they excel in their strengths.

6. Schools feed a lot of stuff even at a tender age. Children need to have time to explore, innovate, understand and more over PLAY.

7. Parents must care about their children and not their marks or grades.

8. Most of the people relate themselves to the movie. They find that there is some part of himself in Ishaan.

9. Just proves that a film without elaborate sets, without a vast set of actors (say 25 !), without spending a fortune, without having over acting but having a great story line, with a fine piece of direction, with great casting (right people), with great dialogs and presentation, and overall an appalling message would be one of the best films ever made.

Thanks Aamir for this visual treat. Three Cheers

Kottayam Kunjachan
(1990)

Excellent movie
This is inarguably one of the greatest entertainment movies of all time. Mammootty has shown the class and skill which proves why he is considered one of the best actors of all time. Koottayam Kunjachan is a small time thug who is just out of jail. He is made to leave the Kottayam district by the local theologian and go to a place where his 'wild acts' are not heard. But he soon gets into trouble with a group of workers which makes him instantaneously famous. He gets to stay with a local devout played by Innocent who lives with his wife, played by K.P.S.C Lalitha, and two children, one of them played by Ranjini. He is tricked into doing things by Ranjini under the false pretension that she loves him. What happens next when he finds that she was using him is the base of the story. The story has very gripping subplots which thickens the main plots. The connection between parts of the film are very nicely handled which makes it a fast paced movie. The attraction of the movie is Mammootty who plays Kottayam Kunjachan. He has taken a kottayam accent and has delivered his dialogs with great panache. Mammootty's presentation of humor is just great in this movie. For a Malayalam movie lover this is a must watch. Hey I have watched this one at least 30 times ..

Mazhayethum Munpe
(1995)

Excellent movie
This is one of the best movies that the gifted actor Mammootty has ever done. The direction, screenplay, dialogs have all been excellently planned and executed. The plot involves Mammoootty as a professor who gets into a sticky situation when one of his students played by Annie falls in love with him. Age difference aside, Mammootty is also in love with Shobhana who is in a sort of paralyzed state but is quickly recovering from it. The film is all about how Annie reacts to this and how all their lives are affected by this. The film has great humor support by Sreenivasan. The situations created by Kamal are very much lively and could happen to anyone. Mammootty delivers a great performance, well supported by Shobhana, Sreenivasan and Annie. Great film to watch!

Oral Mathram
(1997)

Good Film
The first time I watched this movie I did not expect much from it. Most of the people who saw it did not have much to say about it. Once i saw the movie i found how a simple plot and screen play could do wonders to a movie. The story is relatively straight forward and the characters portrayed are lively. Mammootty plays the part of an engineer and Sudheesh plays his side kick. Sudheesh drives Mammootty into troubles and Mammootty is the guy who gets blamed ultimately. The plot is about how Mammootty finds out a deadly secret about the disappearance of the land lord of his rented house. The film does not have a usual ending or an 'romantic' subplots but the movie is certainly worth a watch and the comic relief is pretty much effective. Entertainment is what an audience expect from a movie and this movie delivers it.

Kaliyoonjal
(1997)

Gripping Movie
Mammootty has been one of the most powerful actors in Malayalam cinema for many years now. In this film he portrays a brother to a disturbed sister. The sister, played by Shalini, is mentally disturbed if any thing goes against her will. She is possessive of her brother and creates a havoc when she gets angry. Enter Shobhana who marries Mammootty and Dileep, who plays Shobhana's brother and marries Shalini, and problems start up in the family. Certainly a family film for the Malayalam masses. The best thing about the movie is the gripping performance of acting maestro Mammootty. Shalini and Shobhana have given decent performances as well. Certainly a treat to watch !

Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu
(1988)

Excellent Movie
The deadly combination of Mohanlal (Mukandan) and Sreenivasan rocks the screen in this movie. Mohanlal plays the role of a middle class guy who just got permanent in his job. He lives in a small colony where there's a water shortage problem and the people struggle to make ends meet. Mohanlal is all set to declare his love to Renjini (Sumithra) when his friend Sreenivasan enters the picture. Sreenivasan plays a prank/conman who tries to acquire money from any medium possible. How Sreenivasan cleverly tricks Mohanlal and becomes the supreme person in the colony is portrayed in the movie. Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Jagadhy and Thikkursi Sukumaran Nair chip in with wonderful performances and the movie is all set to entertain audiences.

Thoovanathumbikal
(1987)

Excellent Movie
Anyone who is unsure why Padmarajan is haled as one of Malayalam's's best directors ever see this movie. The plot revolves around the relationship that a guy has with a prostitute. Mohanlal plays the role of the common villager in the first scene but he is not what he seems to be as Ashokan finds out after some time. He asks Parvathy to marry him but she declines making fun of him. He meets Sumalatha, whose mother wants to gain some money but making her a pro. Mohanlal feels guilty when he understands he has made her start the journey to destruction, being a prostitute. By this time Parvathy learns more about Mohanlal and falls in love with him but then Mohanlal could not give in because of his guilty feeling. He tells Parvathy about Sumalatha. She tells him never to meet Sumalatha again but Mohanlal replies by saying he doesn't know what will happen if he meets her again. What happens when she does come and meet ? Watch the movie ..

Aye Auto
(1990)

Excellent Movie
Mohanlal as the auto driver along with his co workers portray the lives of ordinary auto drivers who are treated bad by the higher authorities. Mohanlal aspires to be a pilot and wants to learn English so that he could stand up to the people who make fun of him. The situation becomes critical when a rich girl played by Rekha falls in love with him. At first he resists but then Mohanlal complies only to gain the anger and hatred of the family of Rekha. Its an entertaining film with very natural characters. Murali plays his part in the movie along with Thikkurshi SUkumaran Nair and Sukumari. Jagadeesh, Kuthiravattom Pappu and Maniyanpilla Raju as the fellow auto drivers give the movie some comedic moments. Sreenivasan as ever shines as the Inspector.

Kilukkam
(1991)

Excellent Movie
This one of the best entertaining movies that Malayalam cinema has ever seen. Mohanlal plays the Ooty guide who gets to meet Revathy who plays a mentally abnormal girl and Jagathy plays Mohanlal's Close mate. The comedy scenes and the on screen chemistry between Jagathy and Mohanlal just blows off the audiences and they just laugh out loud. I have personally watched this movie more than 20 times and every time it keeps getting better and better. The twist in the movie is also provided when a secret about Revathy is revealed to Mohanlal and Thilakan is made to play a pivotal role. Innocent as the sentimental butler showcases an excellent ambiance. The movie is a real stress releaser and is rated as one of the best.

Azhakiya Ravanan
(1996)

Excellent Movie
It may be the first time out for Mammootty as the anti hero but he rocks in this movie. Mammootty plays the character Shanker Das, a sort of Don from Bombay, who comes to his native village to see his love interest played by Bhanu Priya. But nobody recognizes his as he ran away when still young of age. Sreenivasan portrays the character of Shanker Das's friend who is a novelist. The right amount of comedy and drama is blended by Sreenivasan and Mammootty to make the audience laugh and think at the same time. The climax scenes are the best i have seen in any movie and Mammootty's performance is a praise worthy one. Cochin Haneef chips in with a supporting role along with Biju Menon. Mammootty pictured as an anti hero may not be up to the liking of many people but if you admire the art of cinema this is a must see.

Hitler
(1996)

Wonderful movie
This was the first time that the re known director Siddique worked with the gifted actor Mammootty and we get a real treat to the eyes. The story is a fast pace one with many twists and turns which introduces Mammootty as a protective brother of five younger sisters. Mammootty portrays an excellent wide range of emotions from an action figure to the ever loving brother. Mukesh and Jagadeesh does well in providing the tender and light hearted moments with their blend of comedy. Mohan Raj and the villains provide the movie with the vigor and action. But at the end of the day Mammootty proves to be too good an actor for anyone to criticize. Fun filled ride and i suggest take the RIDE.

Oru Maravathoor Kanavu
(1998)

Superb Movie
When we combine the gifted acting skills of one of Indias most sorted out actors and an excellent story line, we get a movie that is a real treat to the eyes. Thats what Mammootty has done with 'Oru Maravathoor Kanavu'. Mammootty plays the 'Gunda' in the film who comes in rescue of his younger brother played by Biju Menon who has some problems in getting to harvest crops in an area of land where the corrupt and shrewd lord Nedumudi Venu has an eye on. Divya unni plays th love interest of Mammootty. The action and comedy skills of Mammootty are articulately extracted by the director and presented in a fun fashion. I would recommend it as a must watch !

Dasharatham
(1989)

Excellence personified
Sibi Malayil's direction plus the awesome on screen presence of the gifted actor Mohanlal pulls off one of the well sorted out movies ever made in malayalam history. The unusual story line of a wealthy guy who doesn't know what he wants is articulately played by Mohanlal.Murali delivers an appreciable performance along with Rekha who plays his wife.Karamana Janardhanan Nair and Sukumaran also deserve praise. The story starts off showing the carelessness of Mahanlal as we get the spoiled rich brat feeling. Then he feels that he needs some responsibility in life and what does he do ? decides to adopt a baby. That too from his own blood .The thing is that he doesn't want to marry. Then Rekha who needs some money comes into the picture and the doctor played by Sukumaran arranges a meeting.Rekha need the money to treat Murali and she agrees to bear Mohanlal's child. The ending has a special thing about it and the charisma of Sibi Malayil is shown off conclusively. Great film to watch and a collectors item for sure.

Chronic Bachelor
(2003)

quite good
Siddique tries to create that he created with his previous films like RamjiRao Speaking , Godfather and Vietnam Colony. This time he picks Mammootty to play the lead role after Hitler. The script is quite intense and has a lot of factors which was too much i suppose.I would say if it were simple then the film would have scored more in the box office. We see the young Sathya Prathapan agitated at first with his father's ( Lalu Alex ) misconduct with another woman. His father dies and this hurts Sathya Prathapan and he feels that he has done wrong to his father. He tries to rectify the ill mannerism of his father by seeking the 'other' woman but she denies any relation with the entire family. Her son also goes to jail after having a few riots under his belt. His soul mate tricks him into giving her and her father a great amount of wealth and then abandons him. This makes SathyaPrathapan swear not to have another woman ever in his life. In the whole of the movie we see Mammootty having a tough time defending his promise.Innocent tries to generate his glittering performance as in RamgiRao Speaking and Mannar Mathai Speaking but perishes.Mukesh chips in as the son of a close friend played by Janardhanan. The concentration is mainly on Mammootty , Innocent ,Mukesh ,Indraja ,Rambha ,Bhavana ,Lalu Alex and Biju Menon. Rest of the people are just show watchers.Indraja gives a memorable role that is easily her best in any malayalam movie .

Megham
(1999)

entertainment guaranteed
Priyadarshan's attempt to make a movie with Mammootty playing a colonel who has a crush on a village is a pathetic attempt to make the character actor perform a total blabber of a role. We see Mammootty first trying to cope with his split with his wife ( pooja batra ). He expresses his anger on Dileep who is subordinate. Dileep talks highly of his village and Mammootty decides to spend his vacation there. He meets this village girl (Priya Gill) and falls for her instantaneously. Then the story takes a ugly turn when Mammootty cancels the leave order given by Dileep when he learns that Priya Gill is in love with Dileep. An intense ending with is a trademark of Priyadarshan films can also be observed for this movie. Its the other characters that make the movie worth watchable. Srinivasan and Cochin Haneef play great comedy roles and they stand up with their excellent chemistry on screen. The film is worth watching when you are in the mood .

Thommanum Makkalum
(2005)

Quite okay
This movie is a pleasurable one to watch.Mammootty comes up with a glittering performance with Lal and Rajan P Dev chipping in with strong back ups. Three pranksters decide to go on with their life and be good people but trouble follows them.Their truck breaks down in a village and lal could not resist stealing some rice from the kitchen of a house nearby and the trouble starts. Rajan P Dev eats the rice and is soon hospitalized after he spits blood. It so happens that Janardhanan ,the man of the house, had poisoned the rice so that he and his kids could escape the clutches of the evil landlord.Mammooty scolds Lal for stealing and Janardhanan for poisoning. He again gets into trouble by slapping the landlord's daughter. The daughter falls for him and the landlord impressed by Mammootty decides to marry his daughter to him.But the uncle of the landlord ( who is quite young ) tries to stop the marriage using the false image of Lal. Easy film and Family entertainer

Rajamanikyam
(2005)

Great movie
Mammooty has been around in the malayalam film industry for quite a while now , but he never ceases to astonish the audience with his mesmerizing performances. In this film which was a major block buster of 2005 , Mammooty plays a man who got separated from his mother a long time ago because of a quarrel between his brother who is the son of his step father, played by saikumar. He is brought up else where and has a trivandrum accent which makes the character peculiar .The dialogues are articulately poised and the action scenes have been picturized well.Even though Mammootty uses the language , which he has not been accustomed to, he does a great job in expressing emotions very naturally. All in all i will say this is a must see movie .
