The Final Conflict
(1981)

Christian (no capital letter for you!) propaganda
Let's get things straight. People always talk about the Omen trilogy. And some have dared claim that the part III, entitled the Final Conflict, is the best of the lot. Well, maybe it should have been aptly called "The Final Insult" (to people's intelligence), instead of that equally silly and ridiculous movie. Because the only conflict here is between intelligence and this piece of Christian propaganda...

Am I harsh here??? Maybe so, as the movie does have a few good sides, including the mostly good effort of J. Goldsmith. But a movie that quotes the bible repeatedly and attempts to show that the book's contents are all true and that it's just a matter of time until Jesus is born again and claims his kingdom is simply PATHETIC. Anyone who wants to watch a thriller/horror on the topic of the Antichrist/Satan would surely hope for more than this rubbish!!! Horrors are no place for Christian bigotry. The way Damien dies and Jesus is shown there in a halo of light... Give me a break! If you have yet to see the so-called third part of the trilogy and you appreciate the first two movies, then avoid this or, at least, be prepared to feel disgusted. I was. And still am. Luckily, Omen IV puts things right back where they belong;-)

The Girl Next Door
(2004)

Damn...
I don't think much of romantic comedies...But this one has something special about it. It's not silly, as most others are, and instead, manages to catch and keep your attention throughout... From the moment Matt meets Danielle, you keep hoping they're gonna get close and that you'll be treated to the sight of her beautiful body (the face itself is awesome, I have to say)...And some events were really unpredictable, which is a marvel when it comes to this film genre...AND last but not least, Elisha Cuthbert is one of the most sexual young women to hit the screen in years! This is exactly what I wanna see in a romantic comedy - love, sex appeal and a storyline that can still give you something, not just waste your time with stupid sexual jokes and "hilarious" situations...Take my word for it and give this one a try. Watch and enjoy:)

Masters of Horror: Pelts
(2006)
Episode 6, Season 2

Deep cuts for a deep message...
The more a movie is horrifying and gory, the more it's shallow and "cheesy", right??? WRONG. Episode 6 of the second season of Masters of Horror, directed by Dario Argento, is the proof of this.

Now I will not spoil things for anyone who has yet to see this, but let me state the following fact: "Pelts" carries a message as deep as every gory cut and act shown in this episode. It's amazing that Dario Argento has made the most of a short story bearing the same title as this 6th part to put across his love of Nature and the idea that Nature will get even with those who abuse and kill other living creatures for profit (and maybe for ANY reason, who knows?). And he has done so very successfully, let the truth be told.

So,if you're looking for mere gore and entertainment, watch something else. "Pelts" is definitely not something to watch with friends while munching on chips or popcorn(or hardly anything else,if you know what I mean:). But if you've been longing for a horror that delivers extremely gory scenes, thrill and something you can think about long after you've switched the movie off, I cannot recommend this enough - especially if you're an animal lover.

Masters of Horror: The Damned Thing
(2006)
Episode 1, Season 2

A lesson in how to RAPE a movie!
Do you think I hated this episode, since I gave it only 3 points??? I, actually, loved it.Until the last 2 minutes spoilt it beyond repair, that is.

I don't have to tell you the plot,it's all over IMDb. The story itself is mysterious, good acting, great gory special effects. But the ending is so bad that words totally fail me. It's not about the storyline being horrible at the end. it's about a pathetic special effect and a monster that would have been more suited to the ghostbusters! My stomach is still upset about it (just finished watching it).

This is the kind of movie that captivates you and draws you in,and you are led to believe it will be a hell of an experience. But just when you think you're about to finish a brilliant episode of the Masters of Horror series, the people involved in its making simply RAPE it. And our viewing enjoyment along with it!

Opera
(1987)

A short comment by an Argento fan...
No matter how much it hurts me to say this, the movie is not as good as it could have been.Maybe I was misled by the countless exaggerated reviews here on IMDb,but I expected so much more...

Sure, the idea is a good one,the violent scenes and the camera-work are outstanding, the imagination of genius Dario is breathtaking, but the movie is "soiled" by a couple of mistakes that I find unforgivable. First of all, am I one of the few people who feel that the Heavy Metal music played in the most intense scenes simply rips the atmosphere apart??? With a different kind of music (Goblin????) during the "needle" scenes,it would have been SOOOO intense!... Instead, the soundtrack destroys any chance for tension... Secondly, the final killing scene and the last few moments of the movie are simply silly and uninspired. I don't want to say "amateurish", cause I love Argento's movies. The ending left me feeling empty.Talk about a final impression! This is hardly what happens in most of Dario's films! Though, admittedly,Suspiria also suffers from a rushed finale (even if most of it is brilliant)....

In short, watch this movie, try to make the most of its good points, but be prepared for some bad ones as well. This is NOT a perfect movie by ANY means.

Brivido giallo: A cena con il vampiro
(1989)
Episode 4, Season 1

Don't even play it!
My only regret is that one cannot grade a movie on IMDb with a 0. "A Cena..." would definitely deserve that! At LEAST.

*SPOILER?* The movie starts with a bunch of people entering a crypt to awaken an ancient Vampire. When a guy cuts himself and his blood drips and falls onto the putrid and dried corpse that is supposed to be a bloodsucker, the metamorphosis takes place and the Vampire, in an ANIMATION-like effect (would you believe it!), quickly takes on a more human form, only to reveal that he's wearing a tux and a bow-tie! A BOW-TIE, yes. Red, if my memory serves me right! I tried to check out random scenes by skipping through a bit, but it did not get any better than the opening sequences. That's the point when I turned the movie off, cursing it for having made me hope to see a Vampire movie. This is surely not one, unless you're 5 and could take such stupidity seriously.

So, if you like Vampires and don't want to feel revolted or even disgusted, learn from my mistake and don't even try to see this garbage!

Darkness
(1993)

Blasphemy!...
Yes, I know I'm one of the few people longing to trample this movie into the dust of oblivion. So let me me tell you why I feel this way. In truth, had it been advertized as a Zombie film or the like,I might have enjoyed it.But right now,I'm totally speechless.

*SPOILER...Though I'm not sure what's to spoil* Let's start with the first HUGE flaw. If I did not know that the movie is called "Darkness - The VAMPIRE Version" and had I not seen some sequences where some individuals seem to be sucking blood, I would not have seen the connection with Vampires. I mean, FANGLESS???? Give me a break!!!

Second bad point: what's with the Metal? It appears that all young people, but mainly those so-called "vampires", are into various kinds of Metal, judging mainly by their shirts! Don't get me wrong, I've been into the more extreme forms of music for almost 15 years, but nobody 's going to scare me by showing me some ridiculous teenagers in Iron Maiden (of all bands!!!) T-shirts running around, pretending to be Vampires! "Pathetic" is the only only word that I could use here.

Third weakness: the actors. Wait a minute. WHAT actors?! You mean the director's wooden friends! Words would be a waste here.

Yes, alright, the movie is very gory, but what difference does that make? It WOULD have been a strong point and something to enjoy if the "briliant" director had not chosen to create an ARTIFICIAL vampire topic in this movie. I wanted to see Vampires, but was treated to some stupid looking kids I would have loved to use my baseball bat on. The Film-makers should simply have advertized the movie saying "cheap B-grade horror with no plot but a lot of gore" !!!

This movie is blasphemy against the whole concept of Vampirism. And it makes me sick.

Vampire Journals
(1997)

Only for those with...TASTE....
Do you like vampire movies??? Do you feel that for a movie focusing on this particular topic to be taken seriously,it has to be placed in Romania??? Do you want to see a gorgeous scenery, hear great atmospheric music and experience Vamipirism as it 's supposed to be??? Well, then you should get your hands on Vampire Journals ASAP!

*SPOILERS?* I have to point out that I am a huge fan of Ted Nicolaou and everything he's done on the subject of Vampires... The whole Subspecies series is absolutely great, with the most flawless Vampire I have ever seen (Radu Vladislas),but the subspecies effect with its little creatures seems to me like a stain on what is otherwise a work of art... And this is where Vampire Journals comes in. No silly effects are to be found here, all the visuals are simply PERFECT. From the beginning of the movie ,where a cemetery is shown, displaying beautiful statues covered in snow, and when one hears the movie's enrapturing music,to the very last moment when Zachary realises he's never going to erase the whole Vampire bloodline, everything clicks into place. Vampire Journals has it all: gore, romance(?), tragedy, darkness, you name it... It's simply ravishing!

So if, like me, you expect a movie that draws you in and allows you to experience what it's like to be a Vampire (regardless of who you identify with), then this is the right choice for you. If,however, you take such movies as a mere form of entertainment and are not interested in delving deep into the atmosphere and faithful portrayal of the Romanian legend, stay away and do not bash what you can't fathom!

"There's no mercy...... Only darkness eternal"

Il fantasma dell'opera
(1998)

Phantom of the O-P-E-R-A!!!!! CAN'T YOU READ???
I do not rank myself among those who like Opera. Why??? Because I find the emotions and atmosphere in it far too exaggerated and melodramatic to be enjoyed.I 'm not saying I'm exclusively a freak for realism, but I don't like anything where women behave like spoiled little girls and where men seem like emotionally unstable women! I'd rather be shot than have to go to the theater, mind you... To the point: when I first got my hands on Phantom of the Opera by Dario Argento,I knew what to expect: an O-P-E-R-A made into a horror/Giallo movie! I knew there would be a lot of melodrama and silly-looking/sounding emotions... But I gave it a try anyway.

Was I disappointed??? NO. Was it Argento's best effort??? NO.Still, It IS an Opera-based movie,as I've already said,so those criticizing it for the exaggerated emotional atmosphere/behaver - think BEFORE you comment. Secondly,it's true it does not respect much of the book or that ridiculous musical inspired by Gaston Leroux's work - so what!!!! Argento wanted to turn a usual Opera story into a horror and changed a lot of elements - SO WHAT! By doing so,he enabled me to watch something that had much of an Opera yet enough of a horror, and I thank him for it! Next question: is it realistic and do all the details make sense??? NO. You see, Giallos themselves are not always realistic, and if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere! In short: this movie is a Giallo with all the typical weaknesses and strengths, plus (to a great extent) Opera-like melodrama and silliness. If you like neither of the two, don't bother/stop bashing things you can't understand! For me,it's a GOOD movie for what it is, yet no more. But who can show me a more intense version of an Opera than this movie is????...

Subspecies
(1991)

The best movie (and sequels) about vampires EVER to be made!!!!!
Words fail me whenever I want to describe my feelings about this movie (and the sequels)... Does it have flaws? Sure it does... Starting with the "Subspecies" themselves, which were not executed well enough for a special effect. So why do I glorify these movies??? For the herd of movie mass-consumers out there, who care more about quantity than quality, about cheap fun more than about depth, crap like "blade" (it doesn't even deserve a capital letter),"underworld","Dracula 2000","dracula 3000" and so on are good movies to munch popcorn to and drink a couple of cokes... What makes Subspecies a superior effort for anyone claiming to be a Vampire fanatic,on the other hand,is obvious: The Vampire Himself is Romanian, the story is set in Transylvania (the scenes filmed on location are more than convincing),and the atmosphere is not based on any "action-packed" chases or expensive orchestral music.Radu Himself is the source of the atmosphere... This is what a Vampire should look like and this is how He should behave! Add a breathtakingly gloomy castle with dark passageways situated in Romania, include some typical Vampiric elements ( such as the movement of the shadows on the walls when the Vampires take to flight) and you have a work of art! In short,if ,like me,you 're fascinated with Vampires and feel that their appearance as well as the setting should be sinister and dark, there's no better place to look in than in a Subspecies movie... Or in Vampire Journals, the brilliant spin off of the former...

Il cartaio
(2003)

Underrated movie....
Well, I 've just watched Il Cartaio on DVD and I'm not sure why most people are so critical of this movie.I mean, let's face it,this is a thriller rather than a horror, and as such, has a decent plot and good acting. The atmosphere in it may not have been created through dark/gloomy music and gory make-up effects and imagery (Argento's trademark),but it's still there! The storyline is quite interesting and well-constructed (even more so for an Italian movie). Those who complained about the lack of gore, what did you expect? Most violent scenes were seen through a computer monitor, and for the sake of authenticity and realism,Argento could hardly make these sequences brutal and detailed! Mere GLIMPSES of killings and mutilation is all one would see through a monitor anyway! In short,Il Cartaio's a good thriller, and viewers should be advised that it's NOT another giallo/horror by Argento (despite some nice corpse examination scenes). It's a crime story that surpasses most other ones with its extreme atmosphere and camera-work(though ,admitedly,it isn't exactly the usual magic by Argento) If one bears this in mind, the movie could make for a hell of a nice way to spend an evening!

Song of the Vampire
(2003)

Denice Duff should've stayed IN FRONT of the camera!
The first thing I have to point out is that all the comments you're about to read come from someone who ADORES vampire movies, especially those which stemmed from Fullmoon/Ted Nicolaou. So when I found out about Vampire Resurrection and the fact that Denice Duff was involved in both the directing and acting side,I was quite enthusiastic about seeing it.Finding it was not an easy task, but I sometimes wish I'd never found it! Why?... Well, V.R is not the most intriguing and breathtaking vampire flick I've ever seen.Unlike the Subspecies series or Vampire Journals,it does not really have a dark side and the setting is too usual for my taste.I mean, could one ever compare scenes shot in Romania by the ruins of a castle to those filmed in an ordinary American city??? I don't think so! This movie is also pretty frail plotwise and seems to be too heavy on romance.I watched it in stages...The beginning is but a copy of Vampire Journals (one of the few strong points). Most of the movie bores me,but the scenes where hardly any words are said ,when the main theme is playing and Caroline and her Vampire lover move around in the mist are simply magical!!! However, this is not enough to make me adore the film.I'm basically disappointed,I have to admit....

SPOILER: When Caroline goes to visit her Aunt to run away from the threat of her husband, the most unforgivable thing occurs. When she comes to the kitchen and her aunt is preparing breakfast, watch the top of the screen! A microphone keeps appearing there, and, needless to say, this ruined the movie once and for all for me. The directing is simply unprofessional, and for someone like me,looking for a means of escaping reality and delving into a vampiric world of dreams, nothing could be worse than such a mistake!
