Quantum of Solace
(2008)

Not a bad film but just fizzles out
I watched this, as part of the 60 years of bond, on the big screen and it showed a bit how bond has evolved but sadly the plot and screenplay didnt quite have the weight needed for a normal blockbuster ending.

The film was good at showing Bond as a person, with frailties and also built on his relationship with M. It was almost like they wanted to get away from the normal Bond formula as guaranteed characters and scenes do not feature, which was not a bad thing in a way.

The issue with the film is that the ending is weak and, apart from some token cgi, really does not tie the film together in a way other bond films do.

See How They Run
(2022)

A really novel and fun romp
I found this a really novel and almost throwback film with loads of great laughs and twists but never takes itself too seriously.

There is a really good cast with great characters, all bringing different things to the film. Having real life characters add something to the film as well.

I laughed a lot during the film with some of the characters and some of the jokes being very well done.

Its a reminder that there can be a great film made without the need for huge amounts of cgi, huge budgets and massive casts. This is just well written, well portrayed and with brilliant camera work, and just works really well.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
(1982)

40 years on and still a classic
I saw this on the big screen as a 40th anniversary showing and it has not lost any of its appeal. The story and the characters are still magic.

A timeless classic that deserves to be remembered as one of best films of the 80s.

Some of the CGI now shows is age but that does not detract from the film.

I think this is one of Steven Spielberg's best films with an amazing show as well as great characters.

Some of the action is very of its time which adds to the film. The BMX action is a time capsule of the 80s and very iconic.

Also things like the mum leaving an infant drew Barrymore on her own while she collects her brother made me laugh, that would never make a film now.

Die Another Day
(2002)

One of the better bonds, plenty of action
I write enjoyed this bond, there was more action than most and some different settings than normal. There was also a bit of decent humour not just cheesy lines.

The plot was a little weak and it still had the pointless slow motion bits in places but it was ok.

Seen as part of the 60th anniversary showings, it stood up well on the big screen.

Halle berry plays her part well and adds a lot to the film, as does Rosamund pike.

Some of the gadgets were a bit weaker than normal with nothing very inovative.

Find like this though show how much judi Dench character added to the franchise, it brought a new dynamic to the film's.

The World Is Not Enough
(1999)

An ok bond film but lacks a lot
Saw this on the big screen recently and after the first few brosnan bond films being ok this one was a bit of a let down.

There seemed to a lot of action but no substance with both main villains being quite underwhelming.

Fisherman's Friends: One and All
(2022)

A harmless but predictable romp
I think this film knows it's audience and caters to them well. It is almost like comfort food in a movie.

It's just a bit of a shame the script wasn't a bit better. Everything is just so predictable throughout the film and there seem to be plenty of storylines that don't really go anywhere.

Bullet Train
(2022)

As close to a guy Ritchie film as you will get
If you like guy Ritchie find you well love this. It's a good fun caper with good characters and great dialogue.

It is a shame it gets a bit ridiculous at the end but it's still good fun.

Tomorrow Never Dies
(1997)

A good film but shame about the in your face advertising
Saw this on the big screen as part of the 60th anniversary of bond and I thought it was about the best of the series so far. It stood up well to the test of time and pierce brosnan really played the part well.

Bonds new BMW car was mentioned in the last film but this one was the first with just blatant advertising in it with both a car and motorcycle chase involving the brand showing how superior it was too all others at every opportunity.

There was some weird slow motion clips randomly dropped in the film as well but it didn't detract it was still a good film.

Licence to Kill
(1989)

Bond goes really violent she loses the plot
I have been watching these as part of the 60th anniversary showings at the cinema. This film took quite a turn on the previous ones. It's a lot more graphically violent and just seems to rely on shock value.

The film is pretty poor though. The plot is ludicrous even for a bond film and it steers away from the normal bond humour as well.

A bit of a low point after the living daylights last week.

Where the Crawdads Sing
(2022)

Ok but a bit drawn out and maybe a bit of of plagiarism
I thought this film was an ok watch but a bit slow in places. I also felt it drew heavily from other films as well and in certain places it did very obviously. It is also quite farfetched at times.

It is well acted though and had a good ending.

It is worth watching but I don't agree with a lot of the hype.

The Living Daylights
(1987)

A real film not just stunts
I saw this as part of the bonds 60th anniversary showings at the cinema.

This film has aged well and was a real rethink of bond post Roger Moore. I like Timothy Dalton as bond he was very underrated in my opinion.

The film has a decent plot and had a lot of action to go with it. Really enjoyable.

The Railway Children Return
(2022)

Pretty poor sequel
This whole film is a quite weak. The story is really unbelievable, the acting isn't great and it all gets ludicrous.

It's hard to know who this film is aimed at, who will see it and even why it was made.

A View to a Kill
(1985)

A return to form for bond
I watched this on the 60th anniversary screenings on the big screen. This is a classic bond with a good villain, some great chases and a decent plot line.

Some of the bonds prior to this were quite poor but this was a decent film with a great cast and some decent effects.

Brian and Charles
(2022)

Quirky low budget British film
This film is an ok watch. I think if you like the main actor, who is just playing his normal character you will enjoy it more.

It touches your heart a bit and is harmless. It's funny in places as well.

Very British humour though.

Octopussy
(1983)

Quite cheesy but ok
Saw this on the big screen in the bond 60th anniversary showing. This isn't the best bond film by a long way but it's quite good fun.

The action is ok but the gadgets, bond escaping an impossible situation and a decent car chase are all missing.

With a watch but only just.

Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)

Not bad but tries too hard to be ironically funny
This is an ok film but not your standard marvel movie. Most have some quite good humour but this one seems to just want to be a full super hero comedy. Sadly it just comes across as though it's trying too hard.

It's worth a watch but it's by no means a classic.

Minions: The Rise of Gru
(2022)

Very funny and a great crossover for older adults
This was a laugh a minute film for both adults and children. It is set when Gru was a child do has lots of funny references from the time for older adults and a decent soundtrack.

However most of all is just a funny film with minions making it with their antics.

Well worth a watch.

Moonraker
(1979)

Brilliantly absurd
I saw this on the big screen as part of the bond 60 year anniversary and of course it's a classic.

The whole plot is just completely ludicrous but it's just brilliant bond and a real time piece.

Worth a watch if you want a smile, just don't even consider any of the thousands of plot holes.

Elvis
(2022)

A brilliant musical charting two amazing lives
This is an epic from Baz Luhrmann. It is long but passes in instant. It charts the life of Elvis but also the life of Colonel Tom Parker, and how they were entwined.

The music and cinematography are brilliant and the acting superb.

I guess history is all about perspective and this seems to be biased from one perspective but that does not first from a great film.

The Spy Who Loved Me
(1977)

A classic thats all about effects but lacking much of a villain or story
Just watched this on the big screen as part of the bond 60th anniversary series. I can imagine at the time this was really ground breaking with some of the casting, effects and stunts.

Sadly what the film really lacks is a decent bond villain and much of a plot, these seem to have got lost amongst the visuals.

A classic bond but just a bit dated now.

Jurassic World Dominion
(2022)

Like a cash in greatest hits compilation
I know you have to leave reality at the door when you see these films but at least the first one, made from a great book which helps, made you feel like it maybe could happen. This film is just so ridiculous in places that they have lost any even sniff of believability a long way behind.

With this film they seemed to have tried to cram in as many dinosaurs, scary moments and old characters as they can, then tried to find a weak story to fit it all together.

Not the greatest wat to end the franchise.

Top Gun: Maverick
(2022)

Does exactly what it says on the tin
If you go in expecting a completely over the top modern version of the original, you will not leave disappointed.

The special effects, music and plot are all on point. The storyline had twists and turns but it's all quite predictable.

Leave reality at the door and just enjoy the film.

The Bob's Burgers Movie
(2022)

Never seen the series but not a bad film
Having never seen the series I was sceptical about how much I would enjoy the movie but I got into the quirky humour and found it funny in the end. I am not sure it will be everyone's cup of tea but it was worth a watch.

I guess fans of the series will love it.

Everything Everywhere All at Once
(2022)

Totally brilliant. Unique with laughs, tears and violence. It had everything
This film is just so different it's hard to describe. It's a totally novel idea that makes you wonder how it ever got made. But thankfully it did.

The film is so fast paced you cannot take your eyes of the screen. The acting is superb and you just never know what is going to happen next.

An absolute must watch.

Thunderball
(1965)

Totally ridiculous but still a great watch
I saw this on the big screen as part of the 60 years of bond series and although there are more holes than a fishing net in the plot and the stunts are very aged now, this is still just a great film.

Although there are some very suspect moments in light of modern standards,Connery is great as bond.

Well worth a watch. I can imagine how amazing it was on launch.
