The Gilded Age
(2022)

I've strained myself trying to drum up interest.
Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones were masterpieces. The Gilded Age and The House of Dragons are not; and yet people dare to view them in the same light.

This thing is drab, boring, uninteresting and lazy. It could do with a few murders and illegitimate births. If the characters are gay, lets have some gay intrigue. Am I jaded?

I can't say anymore about it. Its just bad. No storyline, no passion, no fleshed out characters...no reason to continue watching. Think I'll go watch Downton Abbey for the 4th time or Game of Thrones for the 6th. An episode of I Love Lucy has much more to offer. Admiring the costumes can only go so far.

The White Queen
(2013)

Hale; Hale
As Margaret Beauford was 13 when she gave birth to Henry VII, in the scene where she meets with her son who at this time appears to be 5 or 6, Margaret shhould have been 18 or 19 years old. Hale appears to be in her late 20's or early 30's. This is a miss for me, but, Hale is such a fine actor that I don't mind it much. Its because I appreciate historical accuracy that I noticed it at all.

I can't think of an actress today that could have worked this role the way Hale has. I like to be drawn in by a character but the way she played Margaret Beauford both drew me in and repelled me all at once. Genius!

The Tudors
(2007)

All but Jonathan Rhys Meyers
I liked everything about this series except Rhys Meyers as King Henry. He's a small, skinny man; Henry was not.

He has one emotion throughout the series...anger. Even his passion reads as angry. You have Henry Cavill right there, tall, imposing and a damn good actor. Yet Rhys Meyers is cast because he gave good Elvis. His presence and performance ruined the enjoyment of the series for me. Yet I stay for the rest of the actors and for the marvelous costumes especially the king's which swallow Rhys up. SMH casting is everything and Rhys Meyers gave nothing. I think he was out of his depth. I never saw King Henry VIII I saw an angry little actor.

Harriet
(2019)

Black face white code.
The powers behind the filmmaking industry will NEVER get it right when it comes to portraying The People of the Book. A "Black" woman directed this and it still had all the typical "dog whistles in it. White folks using the hard "R" "N" word (permitted bcuz it's "art". Tubman's character came quintessential ANGRY Black woman, ungrateful, no other emotions beside anger and pain. Slamming doors, offended after being told she smelled. She was like a monotoon. Gotta save my people!!! We get that but that was ALL we got, sheesh. Not an ounce of femininity, NO depth of character. ABW code.

Couldn't Lemmon cast a Descendent of American Slaves? That's code too; "They are replacing Foundational Black Americans with Africans in films. There was another Hollywood staple as it relates to The Black Female image; being beaten by men, let alone by a Black man and she still had that "mouth" no fear she can take it! They couldn't leave us with the beautiful, serene Janelle Monae's image oh no they had to beat her like a man, bust her face, kill her! Thats what we saw. Minty had a gun in her hand and let that happen? She was tough enough to knock fire from Massa but she was armed and let that happen? Why was Henry Hunter Halls character wearing women's clothing?

They put a Black face at the Helm but Hollywood's destroy-the-Black image crew was hard at work in the background. I don't think they missed any tricks.

Wednesday
(2022)

Mysterious and Spooky!
I almost didn't watch it when I saw who was portraying Morticia and Gomez. Zeta-Jones gave fat sloppy Morticia without an ounce of mystique and Guzman would have been more believable if he had play Uncle Fester in fact I thought the storyline concerning them was not needed at all; like someone cutting a puzzle piece to make something fit.

I saw Tim Burton's name and I decided to take a ride and what a ride it was! This thing was GREAT! Wednesday Adams was a treasure, her deadpan was genious ( I'm 66 years old and I am looking forward to rocking Wednesday's wardrobe). The atmosphere, the witty and slick one-liners was on point! My favorite genre is who-done-it and this gem did not disappoint. With Tim Burton at the helm it gave excellent scares, believable characters, deft acting and this thing was paced beautifully. I was also happy to see Sir Lady Brienne of Tarth (Gwen Christie) featured in this thing.

I binged the entire seies in one setting and never stopped for 🍿. It was just that kind of a roller coaster.

Pretty Little Liars meets Riverdale meets Scream the series meets Wednesday!

One final thing...I would like to see more Casting take in consideration the feelings of Black girls. The female police officer and the bald grease lipped Siren was not it. SMDH Stop, its cruel to continue to cast the most unflattering Black girls in films. Stop.

House of the Dragon
(2022)

Stumbling in the dark
Figuratively and actually, why is almost every scene shot in the dark? Can't compare this to GOT becuz there is NO comparison. I can't get a handle on what's going on; this thing is confusing, meandering; if there's a plot or storyline it's lost somewhere...never mind this thing is awful. I promised my brother I would give it a chance...won't be the first promise I ever broke. NONE of the charachters are defined ( probably bcuz we can't see any of them) Daemon was becoming interesting but now he's a dead beat dad while being with his family. He's a Nomad...why? I don't care, I really don't. I'm going to go and watch GOT to get the bitter taste of HOTD outta my mouth.

The Batman
(2022)

Is It Over Yet?
Batman meets Hannibal Lecter meets The Pied Piper meets Catwoman with daddy issues. My question is why Prime Video was charging $19.99 for this thing.

Scream
(2022)

Please Stop
Please stop making these scream flicks, everytime they bring another to the screen I come running because I know it can't get any worse...gotta get better. Sadly... The only way to save this franchise is if SYDNEY and GAIL become the killers.

Winter's Bone
(2010)

JUST A GOOD FILM
No bells and whistles just a story told done well; paced well. Good to see something different, simple. Not a lot of dialogue but you understood what was taking place and without dwelling on them, the charachters, you have a good idea of who they were. Just a good film. Sets matched the story.

Sense and Sensibility
(1995)

As timeless as the original Wuthering Heights
I've only seen this movie about 15 times. Each viewing has the same impact as the first. Cast, first rate, costumes, Patrick Doyal's wonderful score; Ausen's masterpiece is beautifully realized by Ang Lee. Charicterization by each role; marvelous, I especially like Harriet Walter's charachter so difinitively "upper crust", lol.

The Spanish Princess
(2019)

From steak to Alpo
Everything about the Spanish Princess is bad, season 2 is bad trash, just awful. The White Queen had star power, drama, great acting; The White Princess had the same just a little less... The Spanish Princess has none of the above. The curse of the third installment I suppose. Who filmed The Spanish Princess and said "Great! We'll do season 2 and make it even worse!"? The stars were right to stay away from this dog. Harriet Walters should be exhausted from carrying The Spanish Princess season 1 on her shoulders; she's the ONLY reason I finished it. No one could have saved season 2 not even Bette Davis.

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
(2020)

I think we all could use a feel-good movie, right about now.
I knew nothing about this film; my brother recommended it and I watched. Wow! What a wonderful film. I don't care much for musicals, (probably why my brother didn't mention it) , but I thouroughly enjoyed this one. The costumes, sets, music, actors were believable, and and the singing uplifting. Great timing to release a film like this in 2020. I think we all could use a little magic and belief this year. It's added to my must-watch-annualy list for the Holidays.

Why Women Kill
(2019)

Each episode a cliff hanger!
This thing was Effing Brilliant! Sets, wardrobe, timing, acting, characters well defined, directing, superb depiction of each era, ( I have lived through each one). You never know what's gonna happen next. This thing was damned good. I don't rate 10's easily or often. I was fortunate to be able to binge watch the first season in one day; what a ride! Ready for Seasons 2, 3, 4.... Well done Marc Cherry!

Van Helsing
(2004)

Everyone's Here!
Practically every monster known to filmdon was in this thing and all extremely well done. ( Even Tarzan makes an appearance if you pay atention and have a sense of humor). The monsters were very well done. Some of the tightest werewolves I have ever seen. Sets, costumes, special effects and the soundtrack were superb. The acting wasn't bad at all given the dialogue in these types of films. Just a damn good monsterflick for my money.

Dead to Me
(2019)

Season 2 is Dead 2 Me
Season 2 got tired real quick episodes 1-4 were the same scenes. Wide eye - what-are- we- gonna-do? Playing off one another got stale. Angst, Angst, Angst Ok, what else you got? You hinted at Mobsters in episode 1, where are they? Uh dude having an identical twin went out with 90's soap opera, the nosey neighbor and the female cop are not to be believed, the Token Black waitress had a stereotypical bad rude attitude, WHY? Season 2 is dead 2 me!

Knives Out
(2019)

Disgusting
This thing had all the elements of a classic Whodunit, great actors, atmosphere, but with a so so storyline. I was into it but a full spew of vomit right into someone's face? What adult finds this entertaining? There are 3 to 4 scenes of vomiting followed by a filthy full on spew...Knives out dropped from a 7 to a 4 for me...nothing entertaining about vomit.

The Little Stranger
(2018)

Well made.
There was atmosphere, all great actors, set and mood, took it's time without wandering, there was mystery (just enough); timing all combined I really enjoyed it.

Sweet Magnolias
(2020)

Think I got a toothache
I want to like it, I really do but nah...I want to be entertained and there is nothing in this series that is entertaining. No character development; I don't know these people...I don't want to. Beautiful little town people seem nice but the Black woman's character is depressing. One has three kids and still has a 20 year olds' figure, she's perky cute but the Black woman looks years older and has an awful overbite and seems a little Mammyish to me, no family, no man what else is she gonna do but run around grinning and taking care of everyone else...on Code cliche. Maybe bcuz I'm from L.A. but this thing is too sweet for me. Dose this take place in 2020? Smacks of Mayberry but not half as entertaining.

The Act
(2019)

Baby Jane meets Misery meets Carrie
I had to keep reminding myself that Arquette wasn't the real Dee Dee Blanchard; otherwise I would be bristling with hate...yes hate. I know that's a strong word but so were the feelings Arquette's astounding performance invoked in me. And Joey King's work on this series...no words...astounding dosen't quite say it...I kept wanting to rescue her but I was affraid of her at the same time. Pathetic, erie, jarring, scary and oh so very sad. I binged the entire season...I kept saying "one more episode" . I was up til 3:00 a.m.; had to know what was going to happen next. Go get your thrill...watch this thing...it's damn good.

I, Claudius
(1976)

I've only watched it about 10X's over the years
Stellar cast, Jacobi is magic, Sean Phillips is menacing in a cat-like all possesing way, Brian Blessed delivers as always, direction, sets, costumes, storyline, drama, some comedy it's all there! Think I'll get some 🍿 and watch it again.

Godless
(2017)

Hairs breath from a bad comedy
I could only take about 3 episodes. Corny, tachy, dripping in racism. Muddled characterizations; everyone seems depressed or bored ( I know I was), no one was friendly and every one was pointing guns. Where did that Black family get that biracial daughter from? Why didn't the deputy bathe and change his shirt before he went to visit her? This thing was tripe! Who found it entertaining to watch a grown man spit in a child's face? I'd had enough...don't waste your time with this one. Godless was artless.

Portrait in Black
(1960)

Explitives in a 1960's film?
It's a good movie full of melodrama, I love Quinn and Turner is one of my favs too; I'm a 'Thin Man' junkie and was happy to see Virginia Grey in this film! My favorite part is when Quinn says #&#@ ! You have to watch the film to catch the part when he says it.

Before I Wake
(2016)

Not Bad; not bad at all
Had almost everything I like in a scary movie with a little extra. Good story line with a really nice touch to the ending, the monster/ghost was frightening. There were a wee too many "gotcha!" moments in it and I liked the protagonist and the lead characters. Only thing missing for me was thunder and lightening , which it didn't need, but I'm ol' school used to those type of sound effects.

The Killing
(2011)

I almost missed this gem, don't you!
I love a good whodunit series and this one was excellent; kept me guessing at every twist and turn and there was a lot of both. This drama pulled me in and didn't let go until the last scene which had me holding my breath. Story lines were gritty and not over-the-top. The acting in this thing was old-school good like when directors gave a damn about their craft. The two lead characters were extremely well developed; I always knew who they were and Kinnaman and Enos played off of each other like two virtuosos, stuff was really magic. Seasons 3 and 4 were the best two for my money but seasons 1 and 2 made me stick around for the latter two. I fancy myself a film snob, I'll give films 15 or 20 minutes before I'm bored and surfing for something else. If I watch an entire episode maybe there's something there, I stuck around for all 4 seasons and had withdrawl symptoms when it ended. I can almost promise you that you will never guess whodunit.
