The Rhythm Section
(2020)

Strange tone
Starts off SO promising and then suddenly turns into a drag of a movie. God I wish they could remake this movie and rewrite the 2nd and 3rd act.

It just never delivers on the opening promise and potential. It steers into extremely boring and pretentious areas that just fail to connect.

Blake lively is very good in it and does what she can. But she had a weak character script to work with, so it's not her fault the movie bombed.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
(2020)

Better than I was expecting
After suicide squad, boy oh boy were my hopes low. I HATE suicide squad. Birds of Prey did a total 180.

Not only was it much more violent and intense than I had imagined, it was far funnier than the trailers led it to be. There are many people that are wanting this film to fail for some reason. I have no feelings for DC or Marvel, so I could see this with an open mind.

I really liked the plot, the characters were all pretty enjoyable. The villain was a bit one dimensional and annoying, but Margot Robbie carries the whole movie.

Nice music in it too

Emma.

Fantastic
Fun, stylistic, and is basically everything I wanted from the film. The color palette was absolutely gorgeous. I really enjoyed this film and I think any audience member will If they are into period pieces

The Spy Who Dumped Me
(2018)

Highly enjoyable
Good pacing, good humor, plot that develops with fun twists, and contains some okay action scenes

If you want a fun movie night, this could definitely be on the list. It sounds surprising, but there was actually a twist that got me in the end. I don't spoil it but it's not too bad

Check it out, a lot of people I talk to say they liked it too once I've recommended it.

Ideal Home
(2018)

A hidden little gem
Such a sweet and funny little movie this was. HIGHLY reccomwnd anyonw to see this if they can! Really good stuff.

Check this out if you like good movies!!!

À l'intérieur
(2007)

has good moments
Overall it's execution is kinda shaky, but when it comes alive, the film will get under the skin of any audience member.

Very very very bloody and gory, if you can handle that, you may be in for a treat. It has a lot of flaws, but it sticks with you. Which is what films should do no matter what

The Strangers
(2008)

Captivating horror
The strangers has always contained a goodwill in horror due to its wonderful costume design/mask design and creepy visuals.

The story here is fairly simple, has some decent jump scares, but the atmosphere is what makes it unique. Home invasion flicks become personal sometimes when you grow attached to the characters. In this case, I wouldn't say that happens, but we become attached to the environment and atmosphere.

The ending is truly horrifying and dark. But instead of settling for a happy twist, it shows the horror of the event

Better Watch Out
(2016)

This was different...7/10
I gotta admit..this film has quite an interesting concept and a generally good grasp on the genre. It always tends to play to its strengths and doesn't falter on too many sequences.

The young actors involved are very talented and can carry the film by itself. There was great direction and wonderful talent behind the camera. I was impressed by this entire outing.

Mom and Dad
(2017)

Fun satire
Goodness I went into this movie blind and was surprised to find out how the plot unfolded. It was very dark humor and the performance from Nicolas cage was fun. It was so cartoonish and played well with the story. Didn't care too much for the graphic violent scenes, but you can say it was successful in its comedy sequences and humor sprinkled in.

I was just..surprised..and I mean that in a good way. Check it out if you're needing a change of pace from most normal media out there

Breakdown Lane
(2017)

Ehhhh
There's like 15 good minutes of footage in this whole film...other than that...meh. It's higly forgettable. I don't know if it deserves this 2.7 rating? That seems a bit too low. But it definitely could have been a LOT better.

Drone Wars
(2016)

There was certainly effort involved
Despite lacking true tension, Drone Wars does a very serviceable job in bringing exactly what you would expect.....drone wars and action.

However, the script is fairly flat, the acting is all over the place (some good, some bad), and the general effects are pretty meh.

There's SOOOO many worse B- flicks out there, but this just doesn't stand out from the pack and it doesn't have a lot of memorable moments throughout.

However, the general concept isn't too bad. I enjoyed bits and pieces here and there. Some of the score was cheesy, but worked for me. The editing had some yikes moments, but then there was also some very commendable stuff.

Overall, If uou enjoy these types of mindless action flicks, it's truly decent I guess? Not sure I would recommend it, but maybe I would recommend like 20 minutes of the whole film

Collar
(2017)

Fantastic
Caught this a long long long time ago at a festival and I came across it on IMDB. This was a cleverly crafted short film on all levels. It had an interesting payoff at the end and was filled with good sporadic moments across the board

The Valley
(2019)

A mixed bag
Caught this recently at a private screener for a festival selecting it's films. It follows a photographer taking pics when he's suddenly kidnapped by some masked crazies.

It was so inconsistent with the editing that it kind of made my eyes roll at some point. Nothing too bad with editing, just some of the choices were weird and it felt like it was being over-cut. The story was intriguing, had some beautiful shots/location to play with, and the main nameless character was decent enough to carry the horror vehicle. There were just a few moments that I wished would have been drawn out more and explained. Like the screaming roar at the end? It made me jump and was effective, but I'm not sure I understand it.

I think the cult people were doing a ritual and drugged him to give him to I guess a monster not shown? Like I said, it had some nice cinematography and compelling/unique choices that made it stand out from other ordinary shorts, but needed some more run time

Turned
(2015)

A good take on the zombie genre
I've actually always enjoyed these slow burn unique takes on zombie outbreaks. I like to see what happens when all the action fades and we/re stuck alone in a sad situation with a mother turning into a zombie.

This was pretty depressing but so well made. I'm not sure exactly where to watch it anymore (I watched it a long time ago) but it was on my mind recently and I came across it on IMDB, so I figured I would review it. It's good and something that I still think of from time to time when it comes to zombie horror films

Monitor
(2018)

Scaryish short film
This is definitely a notch above other horror short films because it actually has some deeper meaning behind it. This is how most short films should follow the formula and integrate their own little twists inside of it to be mind bending and have some substance.

The mood was terrific and I was instantly connected to the main character. I actually recognized him from some other show but I can't think of it off the top of my head. He was brilliant in this and I love the reality/duality "is that real?" voice that this short film had! Way to go to everyone who made this

C'est La Vie
(2016)

One of my favorite short films ever
I'm not sure where to begin or how to even properly review this, but I'll say this is one of my faceoite shorts I've been able to see. I've been needing to rewatch but I haven't been able to find a way to see it again?

Delicacy
(2012)

Delicacy indeed
What a darkly comedic time this was. The beautiful framing and cinemetography really set this short apart from the typical canvass's of other shorts if it's time.

Without spoiling much, I'll say the ending was a fun and sickly little ordeal. I was drawn in from the very beginning with all of the fun little nuances and witty dialogue. Hopefully Jason Mann's career eventually takes off and he's able to escape the project green light disaster

Day One
(2015)

Good, but forgettable.
This was a nicely done short. Has a few glaring weaknesses, but if you look past these certain things, there's a very well done story put together cohesively. I was able to see this years ago and am finally getting around to reviewing it.

Zygote
(2017)

This was a nightmare
Truly truly truly great filmmaking at stake here. The final sequence where we see the monster in its entirety and the screaming noises sent chills straight down my spine. What a wonderful alien concept. Could this eventually get passed on to a studio? I would hope so. Still so bummed out that they canceled his alien movie he was working on. Would love to possibly see a dead space franchise evolve out of this in the near future

Rakka
(2017)

Well done short film
Neil's short films have been very excellent. This man is a true creative force and is willing to work with whatever budget he has and can invent amazing sci-fi scenarios.

The pacing was great, score was nice, and has a unique feeling to it. I would highly recommend anyone to watch it

Easy
(2016)

Eh
This show has occasionally very good moments/episodes, but for the most part it's slighfly cliched and bland.

If you need a show to watch while doing other things, I could recommend it. It's fjrsf season is actually pretty decent, but after that it just kind of runs out of gas

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
(2019)

Frustrating and discombobled experience
Monster fights- check Solid CGI- check Nice production design- check A comprehensive story- no A beating heart- no All logic- absolutely none

This was such a let down. Sometimes, it's fun to have a movie with tons of creature fights...but this has zero impact on the genre. Normally, I wouldn't care for a story in a monster movie, but this story/script was SO BAD that it's not even silly or campy. It's just bad. They really botched this film.

If you want to see Godzilla fight Godarah and mothra, go see it I guess. But the way the action scenes happen, it just feels kind of bland. There's zero intensity, zero reason to be invested, and zero characters to root for. It's just a mess.

I remember thinking during this "when will it pick up?" Andit just never did. I actually went to the restroom during this and I NEVER go to the bathroom in movies unless I'm bored. There's certainly worse movies out there, but this just had potential oozing from it and they squandered all hope with this

Booksmart
(2019)

A sweet and tender story filled with humor
Beneath the surface of this incredibly raunchy and hilarious comedey is a sweet story about friendship, regrets, and living in the moment.

I really hope people eventually pick up on this wonderful movie when it's steaming, because it's bound to be a future cult classic. I would certainly put it in the top 10 coming of age movies and would recommend it to anyone

The Perfection
(2018)

"that was something else"
Man oh man this was not what I was expecting...but in the best way. I was watching Netflix bored out of my mind and came across this peculiar and bizarre film. Oh man I'm glad I did, because this was truly different.

The two leads were stunning and made for great actresses. The plot was all over the place and never straight forward. Visually it was gruesome and some of the imagery felt as if it was a bit like Hitchcock in my opinion.

Tense, bizzare, and strange is the best way to describe this film. If you have a bit of time on a Saturday evening, it's definitely an eeerie piece of cinema and a nice change of pace from most thrillers

Brightburn
(2019)

Despite the cliches, it's wonderful
Fast paced climax, inventive destruction and kills, and a mix of horror/slow burn really make for a hell of a ride. Don't bring your kids to this movie, because it's certainly only for adults. Nevertheless, go see this movie and you won't regret it
