[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Lady in the Lake Season 1 finale, “My Story.”] Lady in the Lake‘s finale brought together Natalie Portman‘s Maddie and Moses Ingram‘s Cleo for one wild twist as it was revealed Cleo’s friend Dora (Jennifer Mogbock) was the woman discarded in the lake. Believed to be Cleo, she used her friend’s body, rendered lifeless after a lethal overdose to help aid her escape from the clutches of Shell Gordon (Wood Harris) and associates. When she realizes that Maddie’s investigative reporting could mess up her escape plan, Cleo seeks the woman out, promising to provide evidence to take down Shell and his criminal operation as long as Maddie agrees to stop investigating her “murder.” Ultimately, Cleo is successful in her infiltration of Shell’s business, and delivers the evidence to Maddie, giving her a big journalistic win. As the women move forward down their differing paths,...

[This story includes spoilers from Lady in the Lake‘s seventh and final episode, “My Story.”]
For the first 100 days of filming Lady in the Lake, actress Moses Ingram was nowhere to be found. In fact, she was the last person booked for the Apple TV+ limited series starring Natalie Portman as a Jewish tradwife-turned-reporter searching for her next byline in 1960s Baltimore. But the thing is: Ingram’s riveting portrayal of a missing Black woman who is believed to have been found dead in the show’s titular body of water has become the prestige drama’s breakout story.
In Lady in the Lake, which premiered July 19, Ingram plays Cleo Johnson, the protagonist and narrator guiding audiences through the mysterious muck that leads to her death. For the last seven episodes, Ingram masterfully shapeshifts between two worlds in racially divided Baltimore. From twirling in petticoats and feathered gowns as a department store window model...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Lady in the Lake Season 3 finale, “My Story.”] Lady in the Lake has come to a close with more than a few twists and turns building up to the Apple TV+’s limited series finale, “My Story.” After the revelation that Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) was actually alive after she and Reggie Robinson (Josiah Cross) made Dora Carter’s (Jennifer Mogbock) overdosed body appear to be her’s in the lake, Maddie (Natalie Portman) was clued into the unfolding situation and used her reporting to help. Ultimately, Maddie was aided with information that helped shine a light on Shell Gordon’s (Wood Harris) criminal enterprise, allowing Cleo to make a getaway with her family, while also giving Maddie a shot at a big story. Despite the triumphs, one aspect of Maddie’s new life wasn’t so happy as she and Ferdie (Y’lan Noel) parted ways, but not before he...

Editor’s Note: The following post contains spoilers for Apple’s “Lady in the Lake.”
Like some of the best murder mysteries, Alma Har’el’s “Lady in the Lake” is not so much a whodunnit as a howdunnit — with a few good twists along the way. The Apple TV+ drama based on Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel aired its seventh and final episode on August 23, revealing the final pieces in the puzzle of Maddie Morganstern (Natalie Portman), Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), and Tessie Durst (Bianca Belle).
Throughout the seven-episode series — which started with Tessie’s disappearance and then death — Cleo’s narration has hinted at the connection between herself and Maddie, and the eventual consequences of what binds them. After weeks of alluding to a sinister and even fatal ending, the finale gives both women the kind of freedom they didn’t have in their old lives.
What really happened to Cleo?...

‘Lady in the Lake’: Moses Ingram’s Big Dance Sequence Was ‘Like Some Sort of Exorcism,’ Creator Says
Note: This story contains spoilers for Episode 3 of “Lady in the Lake”
Before the title character’s untimely death in the 1960s-set “Lady in the Lake,” Episode 3 sees Cleo (Moses Ingram) throwing all caution to the wind in a wild dance sequence at the jazz club where she works for mobster Shell Gordon (Wood Harris).
She’s just been inadvertently dragged into the mobster-ordered assassination attempt of a local Black politician, one who she — until recently — ardently supported. The word isn’t out yet about her involvement, but Cleo knows that the secret is going to come out at some point.
Her husband Slappy (Byron Bowers) doesn’t know what went down, only that Cleo is not acting like her usual self and that something is deeply wrong. TheWrap spoke to Ingram, who plays Cleo, and creator, showrunner and director Alma Har’el about capturing Cleo’s chaotic emotions before her death.

“Lady in the Lake” is a study in contrasts. It begins with an appropriately ominous cold open of a corpse being thrown into dark, cold waters outside of Baltimore while the victim herself (Moses Ingram) narrates that a collision of worlds is coming between her and the Jewish housewife (Natalie Portman) who will find her body. Already, that’s a lot.
But coming back from the credits, there’s then a seedy, slightly comic spectacle of a hungover guy in a silver beanie and gigantic cardboard mailbox costume (the ‘60s sure seem weird?) pissing in an alley before jogging back out onto the street and into formation as part of a Christmas Day parade. Then there’s director Alma Har’el’s camera, weaving and dancing its way through the crowded chaos, never quite positioning us in one place or one perspective. Tonally and visually, Har’el continually keeps the audience off-balance.

Plot: When the disappearance of a young girl grips the city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson, a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger.

Superficially stylishly expressive and dreamy but listlessly placed, overfilled with plot and straining to make thematic connections between its two lead characters, “Lady In The Lake” is a frustrating and often uninvolving series bogged down in too many storylines. Worse, it ambitiously tries to tell too disparate narratives and then weave them together but frequently spins its wheels and never really engages. On paper, it’s abounding with significant talents; it has an accomplished writer/director at the helm, two powerhouse leads (Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram), and a solid supporting cast.

After Honey Boy, director Alma Har’el appeared ready to take over the world. She took home the First-time Director award from the DGA and wowed many with her showcase feature. However, sometimes it takes a minute to find the right project, and lucky for us, Alma Har’el found Lady in the Lake. Based on the acclaimed novel by Laura Lippman, Har’el directs all seven episodes of the 1960’s set murder mystery. Told from the perspectives of a Jewish journalist and a black bookkeeper, the story dives into the racial and misogynistic politics of the era. Har’el dives into the intricacies of the story with vigor, creating a deeply satisfying journey with brutal honesty about its characters.

“You think every story is your story,” Maddie Morganstern’s son Seth bitterly argues late in the Apple TV+ miniseries Lady in the Lake. This is a common accusation other characters level at Maddie (Natalie Portman), a Jewish woman in mid-Sixties Baltimore who has left Seth (Noah Jupe) and her husband Milton (Brett Gelman) to reinvent herself as a newspaper reporter. The series is narrated by Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a Black woman who becomes the titular lady in the lake when her body is found thanks to Maddie’s reporting.

So it turns out Apple TV+’s “Lady in the Lake” looks different than some had expected.
The Natalie Portman-led limited series is described as “a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.” Based on the information released so far, it seemed like a 1960s period piece/murder mystery/character drama about an investigative journalist who prioritizes her career over her family.
But the new trailer for the series reveals dreamlike fantasy sequences, narration from beyond the grave, and unsettling psychological thriller flourishes. This is “Black Swan” Portman as much as “Jackie” Portman.
Academy Award winner Portman, who also serves as executive producer, stars as Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish journalist in late ‘60s Baltimore who becomes obsessed with the unsolved murder of Cleo Johnson (“The Queen’s Gambit” breakout Moses Ingram), a Black woman who was found floating in a reservoir. After a relatively public first wave of production for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature across California, things have recently been kicking back up after a few quiet months. Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn were recently spotted in the northeast of San Diego at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in scenes featuring high-speed cars, crashes, and gunplay as PTA is clearly making the most of his $115 million budget and IMAX release. Now, we have a new addition to the ensemble.
Benicio del Toro, who gave one of the best performances of his career as Sauncho Smilax, Esq. in PTA’s last Thomas Pynchon adaptation, Inherent Vice, will reteam with the director. The news was buried deep in a THR article about Hollywood layers noting under Steve Warren: “Clients Benicio del Toro and Leonardo DiCaprio will co-star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film — after del Toro finishes work on Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme.

File this evergreen headline under “no alarms and no surprises.” After working together on There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, Junun, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza, Jonny Greenwood has confirmed he’s already started to work on the score for the next feature from Paul Thomas Anderson.

According to Zack Snyder, one of the most significant Dceu storylines seems to have originated from none other than Oscar-winning star Leonardo DiCaprio. The 49-year-old actor was once considered for the role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s greatest enemy. In an exclusive interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director disclosed that he had a meeting with the Titanic star to discuss the role in his 2016 superhero flick, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
However, Jesse Eisenberg ultimately won the role. Snyder also recalled that DiCaprio came up with the plan to pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against the Justice League. Sadly, the Dceu timeline came to an end in 2023 (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), capping ten years of superhero films that started with Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013).

Across his nine features thus far, Paul Thomas Anderson has never had a prime summer release, but that is about to change when it comes to his currently untitled, maybe Vineland tenth feature. With production still underway across California with the cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti, Warner Bros. has now set an August 8, 2025 wide release, including an IMAX run, for what they describe as an “event film.”
It’s not the first time the director’s work has been seen on an IMAX screen as his Thom Yorke collaboration Anima received a limited run in the format. Though no IMAX cameras have been spotted on set thus far, VistaVision cameras have been seen shooting in 35mm, which should look gorgeous if 70mm prints are made. Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film doesn’t yet have a title, but it does have a release date, and it will even open in IMAX theaters.
Warner Bros. has dated the untitled PTA movie for a release on August 8, 2025. The movie officially stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti.
Anderson is writing, directing, and producing the film, now his 10th narrative feature, with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner also producing.
Warner Bros. is calling PTA’s next movie an “event film,” and its release plans on IMAX are a coup for the director and the studio. Little else is known about it, as Anderson loves working in secrecy, but the film is said to be contemporary in its setting, and it’s felt to be his most “commercial” project to date. In August of that year, Mattson Tomlin boarded to co-write with Reeves, and in late January 2023, DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran gave the film a title and date of Oct. 3, 2025. Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 is no longer opening on October 3, 2025 — a new launchpad for comic book movies. Instead, it is going a year later on October, 2, 2026. We hear the new date is due to the aftermath of the dual strikes.
The spacing also will give some distance from James Gunn’s Superman, which is hitting cinemas on July 11, 2025. That film will kick off Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Studios, the first phase titled “Gods and Monsters.”
Reeves’ Batman is not part of the Gunn universe, but it’s all kosher to co-exist. Gunn has another Batman movie in the works, Batman: Brave and the Bold, with Andy Muschietti directing. Robert Pattinson plays Batman in Reeves’ universe. The role will be recast for Muschietti’s film.

Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and The Wire alum Wood Harris are set as leads opposite Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone in Forever, Netflix’s upcoming drama series from Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil.
A reimagining of Judy Blume’s influential — and controversial — 1975 novel Forever… for a new generation, the series adaptation tells the epic love story of two Black teens, Keisha Clark (Simone) and Justin Edwards (Cooper Jr.) exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018.
Pittman plays Dawn, a college-educated, top executive in corporate finance with an easy elegance that belies her loving but paranoid form of parenting, Justin’s (Cooper Jr.) mother Dawn might be strict at times, but it’s always out of love. As Paul Thomas Anderson shoots his untitled new movie, the film’s ensemble cast continues to take shape with a mixture of returning Anderson collaborators and new faces.
IndieWire has confirmed that five new actors have been added to the project, including “Licorice Pizza” star Alana Haim, “A Thousand and One” standout Teyana Taylor, Shayna McHale, Wood Harris, and newcomer Chase Infiniti. The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The actors join a cast headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn. Penn also appeared alongside Haim in “Licorice Pizza.”
Anderson is known for repeatedly collaborating with the same actors, so the addition of Haim (whom he has also directed in several music videos) will not be surprising to his fans. The film’s growing cast suggests that audiences could be in for another large ensemble piece from Anderson in the vein of “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” or “Licorice Pizza.

With production beginning in Northern California for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature, the casting announcements are finally starting to flow in. After Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn were announced, we learned this week that newcomer Chase Infiniti is part of the ensemble.
Now, THR reports Licorice Pizza star Alana Haim will join the project, alongside Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), Wood Harris, and Shayna McHayle aka Junglepussy (Support the Girls).
The recent set photos have also further fueled much speculation that Paul Thomas Anderson is taking on a contemporary update of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, shifting its 1984-set depiction of Reagan’s reign of terror to the Maga state of today. If this proves to be the case, we would imagine DiCaprio takes the lead Zoyd Wheeler role, Regina Hall is Frenesi Gates, Chase Infiniti is their daughter Prairie, and Sean Penn plays the villainous Brock Vond.

/Film's Ryan Scott is on the ground at Austin Film Festival, and today attended a panel centered on Max Borenstein, co-creator of the recently-canceled HBO series "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty." The series, set in 1979-1980 and adapted from the nonfiction book "Showtime" by Jeff Pearlman, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Los Angeles NBA team and its management during 1980 (when the team was home to legends like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar).
While fans may be disappointed about the series being canceled after just two seasons, some of its subjects might feel vindicated. For example, former Lakers coach Jerry West (played by Jason Clarke in "Winning Time") threatened legal action against HBO for his portrayal. The network refused to budge or throw its creators under the bus, citing dramatic license, as "Winning Time" is a dramatization, and providing assurance that the writers had done their homework.

NBA legend LeBron James’ coming-of-age story was so instrumental to his success, he co-wrote a book about it. Director Chris Robinson now spins the tale into a biopic, Shooting Stars, exploring how James went from a soft-spoken kid with big dreams to a high-school basketball phenom on Sports Illustrated’s cover (headline: “The Chosen One”). (Credit: Oluwaseye Olusa/Universal Pictures) Through the whirlwind, four Akron, Ohio, friends and teammates stand by James. They dub themselves the Fab Five, and while the African American teens feel like fish out of water at a mostly white Catholic school, the unified, determined team of dunkers clutches three state titles. Cast as LeBron, five-star prospect Marquis “Mookie” Cook, 18, had no acting chops but had played on a travel team with James’ son Bronny and glimpsed the pro player in unguarded moments. “We’re all humans,” Cook says. “He talks like us, laughs like us.

The world lost one hell of an actor when Lance Reddick passed away at the age of 60 from natural causes on March 17, 2023. The news hit the entertainment industry with pulverizing force, given that Reddick had been doing press for "John Wick: Chapter 4" throughout the week. But his death was especially difficult to comprehend because he cut such a powerful figure in every role. Reddick was in full stride as a character actor, as vital an onscreen force as there was in film and television. This is a profoundly cruel loss.
Reddick was so wonderful in so many things that, as a critic, you feel obliged to point your readership towards his lesser-seen work on "The Corner" and "Corporate." But all that was on my mind when I learned of his passing was Cedric Daniels on "The Wire": the firm, moral, yet institutionally savvy Baltimore police officer who risks...
