Seventeen years after we last followed historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) on an adventure, we might finally be getting a new sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure and its 2007 follow-up National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer said two years ago that there was a “really good” script in place and awaiting Cage’s approval, it must not have met his approval, because screenwriter Ted Elliott revealed to the National Treasure Hunt podcast that he has been working on the project for the last year and recently completed his first draft of the script.
During his interview on the podcast, Elliott confirmed that his script is complete and ready for revisions and teased that he has written “familiar faces” into the story beyond the returning main characters of Ben Gates, computer expert and author Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Dr. Abigail...

Disney+ is calling off the hunt for more treasure.
The streamer has canceled its series National Treasure: Edge of History after a single season. The news comes more than two months after the 10-episode series wrapped in early February.
The show premiered in December 2022. Per usual with streaming series, detailed viewing figures aren’t available for Edge of History. It made Nielsen’s streaming rankings once during its run, tying for ninth place among original series for the week of Jan. 16-22. (It’s one of only two Disney+ original series not related to Marvel or Star Wars to make the rankings; The Santa Clauses is the other.)
A follow-up and “expansion” of the National Treasure movie franchise, Edge of History stars Lisette Olivera as Jess, a twentysomething Daca recipient who becomes caught up in a quest to find and secure lost treasures hidden from Spanish conquistadors by a network if Incan,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Treasure Protectors,” the season finale of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
In the first “National Treasure” movie, Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates justifies stealing the Declaration of Independence by telling the authorities he is a treasure protector — but that was so 2004.
In the Disney+ spinoff series “National Treasure: Edge of History,” the latest threat to this country’s lost history is from treasure destroyers, specifically a group known as Cras Est Nostrum. This faction hunts down and destroys treasure to avoid the messy business of having to rewrite history.
Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her specific brand of brute force has been the group’s muscle this season in pursuing Montezuma’s Treasure, which she calls a “political powderkeg” if found. And in this week’s season finale, she deciphers the final clue by kidnapping Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her...

Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole in the “National Treasure” series, entered the ongoing TV spin-off “National Treasure: Edge Of History” and has upped the stakes for the third film.
Fans hanging onto every word Poole said during the episode did not miss the obvious reference to “page 47” from the presidents’ secret book from “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”. In that film, the president asks Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage) to advise him on a mystery mentioned on Page 47 in the book.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Charlotte,” the fourth episode of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
Rest assured, “National Treasure” fans: Justin Bartha knows some of you were hesitant to embrace Disney+’s new spin-off series “Edge of History.” He was too.
After all, it’s been 15 years since its sequel, “National Treasure: Books of Secrets,” hit theaters in 2007, marking the last time audiences spent time with Bartha’s Riley Poole.
The tech-savvy, sarcastic right hand of Nicolas Cage’s treasure-hunting historian Ben Gates remains one of the defining roles of Bartha’s career, alongside “The Hangover.” It’s also the only one he can watch with his daughters, so fans have them to thank for chipping away at his initial skepticism to guest star in the series’ fourth episode.

“National Treasure: Edge of History” is a treat for the fans of the original Nicholas Cage film series. It’s a bona-fide thriller that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. The series takes its viewers on quest anyone with love for history to jump on into. But “Edge of History” comes with an added advantage – “It is about a non-white America. It is about an America that is now what it is,” says Mira Nair, an Executive Producer on the show. Speaking exclusively to Et Canada, Nair explains that the show goes beyond quintessential America and its history and blurs boundaries and ethnicities.
“It (“National Treasure: Edge of History”) is the story of a Mexican girl who was not documented and can completely uncover (mysteries)… It’s about intelligence, really, which I love. The fact that it was really a non-white universe – her friends, who are her family,...

The joy of Disney’s “National Treasure” franchise lies in its precise balance of reverence and irreverence. For all the choreographed mayhem, cheeky ahistoricity, and gross mishandling of antiquities, the beloved 2004 film and its 2007 sequel are fundamentally in awe of history, respectful of legacy, and devoted to family.
Despite its sturdy plot mechanics, broad audience appeal and evergreen themes, the “National Treasure” franchise is lacking in currency. Fifteen years have passed since the last entry, a span of years in which the holiday tentpole has evolved, as has Nicolas Cage, who is now more drawn to auteurist grindhouse indies than Jerry Bruckheimer blockbusters. With the increasingly narrow odds of a film to complete a trilogy, the only way to save “National Treasure” from becoming a dusty relic itself was to detonate it and build something new from the ruins.

It's been over a decade since Nicolas Cage last graced screens as "National Treasure"'s Declaration of Independence-stealing, president-kidnapping Benjamin Franklin Gates, but more thrill-seeking adventures are coming our way - this time, in the form of a new TV series! On Sept. 10, Disney+ unveiled the first full-length trailer for "National Treasure: Edge of History," and the show looks action-packed - plus, it includes plenty of nods to the original franchise.
While Cage isn't expected to appear in the series, the presence of his character, Ben Gates, is felt thanks to a fun Easter egg. In one scene from the trailer, a character discovers Benjamin Franklin's glasses - the same glasses Ben used in the 2004 "National Treasure." Additionally, the series will see Justin Bartha reprising the role of Riley.

Disney+’s “National Treasure” spinoff series introduced its newest treasure hunter in a teaser released at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and revealed that another familiar face would be returning.
Though the teaser is quick, there’s plenty to be seen. It opens in an office, where our new hero has a whole board set up with maps and information, presumably related to the next treasure that’s out in the world. Wearing a very Indiana Jones-esque hat and jacket, she takes off her hat to reveal long hair and looks straight into camera.
And so we meet Jess, the series’ heroine played by Lisette Olivera. According to the official “National Treasure: Edge of History” synopsis, she’s “a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.”

Updated with Saturday schedule: After a two-year in-person hiatus due to Covid, San Diego Comic-Con is raging back with a big footprint by streaming, TV and, well, as far as big screen feature films, let’s just say they’re creeping back.
Marvel will make some big waves with its upcoming new movies (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Disney+ series (She-Hulk), but it will keep some powder dry for D23 in early September. Dwayne Johnson will be booming with New Line/DC’s Black Adam, along with Shazam: Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi. However, while Sony will be skipping as the Spider-Verse animated sequel is set for next year. Paramount will be giving fans an early look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And there’s Kevin Smith with Clerks III.

We’re two weeks out from San Diego Comic-Con 2022, which happens to be the first real Sdcc since Covid-19 shut everything down in 2020. Yes, Comic-Con international did hold a very small, stripped down version of the event last thanksgiving but this year marks the convention’s return — hopefully — to pre-covid glory.
Naturally, you can expect a lot of great panels and events to plan for, and lucky for you, per tradition, today marks the start of daily news drops for the Sdcc 2022 schedule. So grab your calendar and let’s get started.
Paramount claimed the first Hall H panel of Sdcc 2022 with a look at “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which starts at noon on July 21 in Hall H.

For those just joining us, we've heard this new version of the classic character would follow John Clayton III (Skarsgard), the man known the world over as Tarzan, years after he's been worked back into society. The Queen asks...

Though it seemed in April that Warner Bros. had decided to chop off the tree limb where David Yates’ Tarzan perched, it would appear that the studio is pressing ahead with the film after some contemplation time. According to Variety, Christoph Waltz is now in talks to play the villain.Alexander Skarsgard is still attached to don a loincloth and play the man raised in the jungle who must protect his home from some great danger. And Yates remains in the director’s chair for the film, which has seen script work from John August, Cormac and Marianne Wibberley and, at last word, Adam Cozad. While it seemed that troubles getting Jamie Foxx and Jessica Chastain to commit to the film stalled it, things are back on track, though Yates is still trying to lock down an actress to play Jane. He’s apparently considering the likes of Harry Potter...

Warner Bros. has been developing a new spin on Tarzan for a couple of years now, starting with Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer's take, and ultimately ending up with a script by John August and Adam Cozad for Harry Potter director David Yates to helm. Alexander Skarsgard is the top choice for the title role, and now the New York Post reports Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastian could be his Jane. Thankfully, this script (also from writers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley) is a totally different kind of Tarzan movie than what we've seen before. The story takes place years after Tarzan has been worked back into society, and the action begins...

We just recently learned that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director, David Yates, had finally decided on Warner Bros.’ Tarzan adaptation as his post-Potter project, and now it appears that things are moving quite quickly on the film.
At the time, we heard that Henry Cavill, Charlie Hunnam and Alexander Skarsgard were in the running for the titular lead role, with WB also interested in Tom Hardy should the actor be open to the idea. Now it appears, and to the joy of millions of women who’d get to see Skarsgard almost butt-naked (again), I dare say, that director’s choice has emerged in the form of the 6’4″ Swede, Skarsgard, according to Variety. Hit the jump for more.
No offer has been made yet and the project still has to get the greenlight, but Yates is one of WB’s top directors so if they enlist Skarsgard, then...
