Incoming Skydance Animation head John Lasseter was grilled for over an hour and a half on Monday by concerned staffers who wanted to know more details about the allegations of sexual harassment that cost him his job Disney. The animation guru also fielded blunt questions, many of them from younger female employees on the team, about how he will behave in his new role, an individual with knowledge of the meeting said.
The town hall meeting at Skydance Animation’s Mid-City Los Angeles headquarters was aimed at addressing discomfort and concerns. Employees came armed with questions and demanded answers. Lasseter complied, said the source, and admitted to wrongdoing, committing himself to proving he had reformed.
The conversation was long and “heavy” in tone. As the meeting disbanded, many employees, who were on their feet for its duration, appeared exhausted. It was unclear if Lasseter had been specific enough about what...

Skydance CEO David Ellison reaffirmed his company’s zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment during a series of town halls about his controversial decision to hire John Lasseter to head his animation division. Lasseter was pushed out at Disney after a long run running its animation division and transforming the company’s Pixar brand into one of the preeminent forces in family entertainment. He was accused of touching female staffers inappropriately and kissing them without their consent.
A meeting with Skydance’s animation team at their at Mid-Wilshire offices was described by attendees as the most raw and emotional. We hear that Ellison spoke candidly and emotionally about his deep concern for the employees and the future of the company, and underscored Skydance’s zero tolerance policy for harassment.

Circus animals and space beasts have lifted Hollywood to a huge weekend.
The cuddly critters of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted led the weekend with a $60.4 million debut domestically, followed by a big opening for Ridley Scott's alien saga Prometheus at number two with $50 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar 3 was the family favourite for the weekend, reuniting voice stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as the zoo animals continue their travels by joining a circus.
Madagascar 3 outdid the $47.2 million debut of the 2005 original, though it came in behind the $63.1 million opening of the first sequel, 2008's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Europe's Most Wanted had the added benefit of today's higher ticket prices and a bump from fans who caught 3-D shows, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D screenings.
Still, fans remain loyal to the franchise,...

Courtesy Dreamworks Animation Los Angeles, California (X17online) - The Dreamworks Animation 3-D super-hero comedy Megamind continues to dominate at the box office. The action-packed flick held on to the #1 spot, while raking in $30 million in it's second week. The family-friendly film which features the voices of Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill has made nearly $90 million to date. Anne Globe, head of worldwide marketing for DreamWorks Animation, said positive word of mouth fueled Megamind's success. "It’s exciting because audiences are clearly responding very well to the movie. This was a decided No. 1 again. We were only down 35 percent, which is a pretty terrific hold for the movie.", Globe exclaimed. Unfortunately this may be the last weekend Megamind rules the box office; the much anticipated Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 hits theaters in 3-D next week.

"Megamind" refuses to hand over its crown to "Unstoppable". In its second week, the DreamWorks animation still stays on the top place of North American Box Office with an estimated $30.1 million or dropping about 34.7% from its opening revenue.
"It's terrific to be so decidedly No. 1 in the second weekend," the studio marketing maven Anne Globe says as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. She additionally expects "continued strength and playability to the family audience" will become increasingly evident through the Thanksgiving holiday period though at that time "Megamind" will lose its roar due to the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I".
"Unstoppable", which becomes a starring vehicle for Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, has a strong debut with an approximately $23.5 million gross, thanks to its strong reviews. The number is roughly $2 million more than many analysts expected and the movie draws women 50% of its total audience.

Fresh off of a long cross country flight, Cameron Diaz arrived back at the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California on Saturday night (June 5).
Looking a little tired as she strolled through the terminal exit, the "Charlie's Angels" actress was dressed casually in blue jeans, a white blazer jacket, white scarf and sandals as she toted her travel bag in-hand.
Meanwhile, Miss Diaz's most recently released film, "Shrek Forever After," remained on top of the box office for a third-straight weekend with $25.3 million.
The weekend take raises the DreamWorks animated movie's three-week domestic total to $183 million.
Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation, tells of the big numbers, "It appears that the family audience is dominating the box office right now, and families clearly want to see `Shrek.'"...

The newbies didn't come close.
Universal's "Get Him to the Greek," an R-rated comedy about a drug-addled rocker, knocked off Lionsgate's action comedy "Killers" and two other wide openers but failed to keep DreamWorks Animation's 3D laugher "Shrek Forever After" from three-peating atop the domestic boxoffice with room to spare. The leggy Paramount-distributed pic fetched an estimated $25.3 million during the weekend for $183 million in cumulative coin through its third frame.
Starring British actor and comedian Russell Brand, "Greek" rung up $17.4 million in second place, while "Killers" -- toplined by Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl -- registered $16.1 million in third place. Fox's live-action family comedy "Marmaduke" bowed limply with $11.3 million in sixth, and Warner Bros.-distributed sci-fi thriller "Splice" pieced together just $7.5 million to open in eighth.
Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" fell 54% in its second weekend to $13.9 million in fourth place with a $59.5 cume. One rung lower,...

"There is this insatiable appetite to invent cool and interesting ways of storytelling," says Ed Leonard, Cto of DreamWorks Animation. But the technology behind these new forms of storytelling is evolving more rapidly than the audiences, who have a plethora of choices at the box office--not to mention cable, the Internet, and mobile phones.
Two years ago, when DreamWorks Animation released its first 3-D movie, there was only one other 3D movie in release--so only one place to screen the trailer. Love isn't always lovelier the second time around, as it turns out, but anyone claiming there are no second acts in American lives needs to talk to a certain emigre from Far, Far Away.
"Shrek Forever After," the 3D family comedy from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount, fell just 39% from its first Friday through Sunday tally to rule the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $55.7 million from the four-day holiday weekend. The PG-rated pic's impressive second-frame performance follows its disappointing $70.8 million debut, while the movie expected to woo the most moolah -- Warner Bros.' bowing "Sex and the City 2" -- proved a mere boxoffice bridesmaid with $37.1 million in Memorial Day weekend coin.
Another $14.2 million from its first day in release on Thursday gave "Sex 2" a five-day opening of $51.4 million, underperforming forecasts of a $60 million-plus debut. The original "Sex and the City" movie fetched $62.6 million in a four-day bow during 2008's Memorial Day frame.

So much for the public's hunger for anything in 3D.
DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After" bowed even more lightly than some had feared, with the family comedy topping domestic rankings with just $71.3 million in estimated weekend boxoffice. The latest Paramount-distributed pic about a lovable ogre and his family debuted with significantly less green stuff than the two previous "Shrek" sequels, which each fetched $100 million-plus in their first three days.
Now execs must hope the franchise's first 3D installment mimics the market longevity of Dwa's "How to Train Your Dragon," a mere $44 million March opener that's used fire-breathing 3D venues to leg out an impressive $210.9 million domestic run. Produced for an estimated $135 million, "Shrek Forever After" hit multiplexes amid expectations of an even more lucrative theatrical campaign.
Elsewhere this weekend, Universal unspooled Rogue's action comedy "MacGruber" with a paltry $4.1 million in sixth place. Universal's Russell Crowe starrer "Robin Hood" dropped...

How to Train Your Dragon has been an enduring yet unlikely success since its launch on Mar. 26. Enduring in the longevity of its box office run, and unlikely due to its genre and how it strayed from the DreamWorks Animation norm. With close to $209 million through its eighth week, Dragon has grossed nearly five times what it did on its opening weekend, which is the biggest multiplier of any 2010 nationwide release thus far and, among major animated releases, the biggest multiplier since Finding Nemo. Its average weekend drop-off rate has been a slim 26 percent. When it led the April 23-25 weekend, it was the first movie in over four years to reclaim the weekend top spot, and it's been in the Top Five since it opened. The last animated feature to spend that much time in the Top Five was Toy Story in 1995. When How to Train Your Dragon drew $43.7 million on its opening weekend,...

Kids just wanna have fun -- or so DreamWorks Animation's bean counters will be hoping this weekend.
The Glendale studio's Paramount-distributed "Shrek Forever After" opens Friday, with execs more challenged than comforted by the knowledge that each installment in the family-comedy franchise has posted successively bigger bows and together have collected $1.23 billion in their domestic campaigns. The most recent entry -- May 2007's "Shrek the Third" -- unspooled with $121.6 million en route to an eventual $322.7 million domestic tally.
But the $441.2 million rung up in the U.S. and Canada by May 2004's mega-leggy "Shrek 2" was the 9-year-old franchise's most-lucrative domestic campaign. So that sequel's total boxoffice and the threequel's opening tally are the marks to beat -- with the fourquel likely to fall short by both measures.

New releases can't beat the fiery power of "How to Train Your Dragon". "The Back-Up Plan", "The Losers" and "Oceans" which were released over the weekend performed well below the DreamWorks Animation which almost hit number one last week had "Kick-Ass" not become such a tough competition.
Experiencing 23.5% decline in ticket sales, "Dragon" scores $15 million in the champion spot mainly from 3-D theaters. It is by far the lowest-grossing weekend of 2010, but according to Box Office Mojo, "Dragon" will vie with "Kung Fu Panda" to become DreamWorks Animation's highest-grossing non-"Shrek" movie. Cue the fire-breathing motion picture.
DreamWorks Animation's 3D adventure "How to Train Your Dragon" has yet to flame out in movie theaters, offering an upbeat storyline to an otherwise ho-hum boxoffice session. The Paramount-distributed pic topped domestic rankings with an estimated $15 million in its fifth weekend for $178 million in cumulative coin.
Two wide-openers offered slight competition, as CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" proved a mere runner-up, and Warner Bros.' action pic "The Losers" lost by more than expected. "Plan" -- about a couple who meet after the woman's artificial insemination -- procreated $12.3 million in second place; "Losers," based on a comics series about a fictional World War II fighting force, fired blanks with $9.6 million in fourth.
Disneynature's "Oceans" hauled in $6 million from a modestly wide launch in 1,206 locations. That was good for eighth place on the frame, with the documentary toting an $8.5 million cume...

Update: 'Kick-Ass' overtakes 'Dragon'
There was another photo finish at the weekend boxoffice, as a leggy holdover again appeared to outpace a big wide-opener.
DreamWorks Animation's leggy "How to Train Your Dragon" fetched an estimated $20 million to top preliminary domestic rankings. The Paramount-distributed 3D adventure piled cumulative coin to $158.6 million through four sessions.
Just a hair off the leader's pace, "Kick-Ass" -- a relatively inexpensive pickup for Lionsgate -- posted a weekend opening less potent than its name yet hardly a kick in the pants for the minimajor. The well-reviewed romp about a band of not-very-super superheroes rung up $19.8 million, landing on the lower end of pre-release expectations.
The No. 1 and 2 positions could change Monday, depending on final data from distributors. Another wide-opener -- Sony Screen Gem's R-rated comedy "Death at a Funeral," with Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence -- settled for fourth place with $17 million.

How to Train Your Dragon soared to the top of the weekend box office with an estimated $43.3 million on approximately 7,000 screens at 4,055 theaters, but it fell far short of the last DreamWorks Animation 3D feature, Monsters Vs. Aliens, which opened to $59.3 million on the same weekend last year. That along with a somewhat tepid start for Hot Tub Time Machine led to a 14 percent drop in overall business from the same timeframe in 2009.
While How to Train Your Dragon's opening may seem a little toothless compared to Monsters Vs. Aliens, it was bigger than many other recent 3D cartoons, including A Christmas Carol, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Bolt and Meet the Robinsons, and it delivered the highest-grossing dragon movie debut ever, topping Eragon's $23.2 million. Dragon-centric movies as well as ones about Vikings like Dragon generally aren't big box office draws, and Dragon had the additional disadvantage of being an action-oriented animation,...

3D's rising star got another boost at the North American boxoffice this weekend as Paramount's release of DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" flew to the top spot, and Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" held on to enough screens to emerge a solid number two.
Co-existing on the available 3D screens, "Dragon" bowed to an estimated $43.3 million, while "Alice," in its fourth weekend, lost 49% of its audience as it took in another $17.3 million, bringing its domestic total to a whopping $293 million.
MGM's "Hot Tub Time Machine," which relied on R-rated comedy instead of flashy effects, debuted more modestly as it collected $13.7 million.
Close behind was the second weekend of Sony's battling rom-com "The Bounty Hunter." The Jennifer Aniston-Gerard Butler teaming fell by just 40% as it brought in $12.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $38.8 million.
In fifth place, Fox's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," also in its second weekend,...

A 40-foot-long Viking ship is set to dock in Times Square on Monday.
It will come courtesy of DreamWorks Animation and Wal-Mart for the purpose of advertising "How to Train Your Dragon," not to mention the copious amount of toys and other products generated by the 3D movie that opens Friday.
On the surface, the faux boat might symbolize an unusual dedication to the success of a film on the part of Wal-Mart, but it's actually the culmination of a yearlong effort to align itself with the family film.
Wal-Mart will sell more than 100 items -- clothing, games, cookies, etc. -- based on "Dragon," all but a handful of which can only be purchased at its stores. The stuff will be easy to find at the 2,500 Wal-Marts nationwide: Look for it near the half-size version of the Times Square Viking ship.
The boat will be in Times Square through March...
