Los Angeles police detective Lt. Ohara, a contemplative but shrewd officer, watches as his colleagues bring in a man charged with a robbery-murder spree that included a cop killing. Going through witness statements, Ohara realizes that the wrong man was arrested and that the real killer is someone who very closely resembles him - but is left-handed while the suspect is right-handed. Ohara unloads his gun and secretly passes it to the suspect, who takes Ohara "hostage" and escapes. Ohara then stashes the suspect in his home and reports back to headquarters. The killer had an accomplice, so Ohara joins the investigation. When he finds about the killer's car, Ohara lifts an identical vehicle from police impound and has his new friend drive it around until they are spotted, then quickly hides it while the cops hunt for an identical vehicle.
