Konami may get a bad rap for having squandered the Silent Hill franchise in the years leading up to the recent series renaissance (which is set to culminate in both a big budget remake of Silent Hill 2 as well as a new Christophe Gans film), but there was a time when the company was criticized for releasing too much Silent Hill media in an attempt to keep the IP fresh in consumers’ minds.
While some of these franchise expansions were obvious cash-grabs, others experimented with the cursed town in ways that we’ve yet to see again. And in honor of the new Silent Hill experiences set to grace consoles and cinema screens in the upcoming year, today I’d like to look back on a collection of forgotten spin-offs from the 2000s that I think (mostly) deserve more love.

Recent reports suggest Capcom is preparing to remake more Resident Evil games. It’s hardly a surprising report given both the quality of those recent remakes and the cultural power of the Resident Evil franchise. However, it is a reminder that Resident Evil has historically achieved a level of success that has eluded pretty much every other horror game franchise. The genre has long lived in the wake of Resident Evil, and it’s been that way since the ’90s when the first Resident Evil made such a seismic impact that much of what followed was called a clone.
Because of that, some of the earliest and most fascinating horror games have largely been ignored or otherwise forgotten about. They may not have come anywhere close to replicating Resident Evil‘s success, but if you ask me, these forgotten ’90s horror games are more deserving of a remake than any...

On Thursday, Sony’s State of Play livestream teased out all the company’s gaming plans for the rest of 2024.
It was mostly a letdown.
Outside of a few updates on remakes like Silent Hill 2, remasters like Until Dawn, and a PC port of God of War: Ragnarök, there were only a handful of new games to show off, the biggest of which was Firewalk Studios’ Concord, a new multiplayer shooter whose CGI-only trailer failed to show players much gameplay, leaving audiences mostly confused as to what the game really is.

Silent Hill 2 was probably one of the most popular upcoming games that got a spot in the 2024 PlayStation State of Play Showcase lineup. The game will be a remake of arguably the best entry in one of the most iconic horror video game series ever.
Despite fans being excited about the title, they were initially skeptical of the game right from the first teaser trailer shared a year ago. However, the gameplay trailer revealed at Sony’s Showcase has given gamers even more things to worry about and criticize about the upcoming title.

Actor Michelle Rodriguez has starred in several box-office successes like the Fast and Furious franchise and Avatar. She’s also dabbled in a few indie films as well. To her, it seemed blockbusters became more worthwhile, even if the movie had little depth.
Why Michelle Rodriguez preferred blockbusters over indie dramas Michelle Rodriguez | Massimo Insabato/Getty Images
Rodriguez isn’t a stranger to doing indies. The actor famously had her start with the small feature Girlfight. The indie focused on a female boxer trying to prove herself as a fighter. Her performance in the flick impressed Vin Diesel, who invited her to become a part of his Fast and the Furious franchise.
According to Girlfight director Karyn Kusama, Rodriguez knew early on that Fast and Furious would be a hit. Ironically, Rodriguez also saw herself starring in a series of Resident Evil movies before the video game’s film adaptations became realized.

Dusk Golem, a prominent Resident Evil leaker, has some disappointing news for Resident Evil 9 fans. Although he previously stated that the game would be coming in the summer of 2025, it seems that the game has been internally delayed and will instead come out in 2026.
This is a part of his most recent leaks, which includes the revelation that the next two Resident Evil games to be remade will be Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica, instead of Resident Evil 1 or 5.
Resident Evil 9 Won’t Be Announced This Summer
Resident Evil 9 will be the next big mainline entry after Village.
A longer development time could indicate a larger and more complex Resident Evil experience, and this is rumored to be an open-world game and extremely ambitious. The delay might allow for more refinement and ensure the game lives up to the series’ high standards, as Capcom has produced a lot of high quality titles recently.

According to reliable Resident Evil and Silent Hill leaker Dusk Golem, also known as AesthethicGamer, a remake of Code Veronica and Resident Evil 0 is in development, while the long-awaited Resident Evil 9 is likely delayed by up to one year.
These two new remakes would follow suit after Capcom’s extremely strong current run, which includes both newer mainline titles as well as remakes of older, beloved games.
Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica Are Reportedly Getting Remakes
Resident Evil 4 was Capcom’s latest and most acclaimed remake.
The leak that remakes of Code Veronica and Resident Evil 0 are in development isn’t that surprising to hear, given that Capcom has previously shared that multiple new Resident Evil games are in development, which includes both remakes and new mainline installments.

After the recent rumours regarding Capcom’s supposed remake of Resident Evil and work on Resident Evil 9, leave it to insider Dusk Golem to further stir the pot. And the latest rumour is good news for long-suffering fans of Resident Evil Code: Veronica.
Once again, take what is being said by insiders with a grain of salt.
According to Dusk Golem’s latest drip feed on X, remakes for Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil Code: Veronica are currently in development. “I’ve talked to many others behind the scenes about this at this point, it’s something I heard over a year ago, think it was going to get out whether I was the one to say it or not, & that’s about it.”
It would be a dream of many fans to see Code: Veronica get the remake treatment, especially since a fan-made remake was squashed last year by Capcom.

It’s been three weeks since Microsoft shut down both Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, and the community is still sour on their closing, especially with the reveal that Tango had two projects in development.

Capcom has undoubtedly had major critical and commercial success with its Resident Evil (Re) franchise over the past decade. So, it’s no surprise that the developers have continued to double down on the survival horror franchise and give us remakes after remakes. Various reports suggest that Capcom is already working hard on Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica remakes.
While this has caused massive hype among fans of the franchise, many of them are equally disappointed and frustrated with Capcom. For years, fans have been hoping to get a remake of the original Resident Evil game. Few reports suggested that the developers were actually working on the project. However, prominent leaker Dusk Golem says the alleged Resident Evil 1 remake isn’t going to see the light of the day anytime soon.

Following its Resident Evil 4 remake, Capcom is reportedly in the process of updating two spin-offs – Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica.
Capcom took something of a gamble when it remade Resident Evil 4 last year, but it undoubtedly paid off – the current-gen version providing a sensitive update of the ground-breaking 2005 original.
According to recent reports, Capcom is now turning its attention to a pair of Resident Evil spin-offs: 2000’s Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and 2002’s Resident Evil Zero. Both were third-person survival horror games, much like the mainline franchise, but came with their own narrative twists on the formula. Resident Evil Zero’s story switched between two protagonists – cop Rebecca Chambers and convict Billy Coen – and featured a horde of mutant killer leeches.
Code: Veronica was set on a prison island and followed the investigations of brother-sister S.T.A.R.S agents. Both spin-offs were big successes in their day, and both...

Forget the "Walking Dead" comics or the first "Resident Evil" film; it was "28 Days Later" that made zombies cool again in the 21st century. Easily the best zombie movie that technically isn't a zombie movie, director Danny Boyle's sci-fi horror thriller takes place in a nightmare world where society has collapsed following the outbreak of a lab-born, zombie-esque infection dubbed the "rage virus." Many of the film's leads would go on to become far bigger names after its release, including a baby-faced Cillian Murphy as the poor Joe Schmo (or whatever the British equivalent is of that) who awakens from a coma to find London abandoned and overrun with red-eyed, rampaging infected individuals.
The first produced film written by Alex Garland, "28 Days Later" marked the beginning of the storyteller's exploration of transformed landscapes and physical bodies (a motif he's carried over into his non-sci-fi work with the...

The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

In key appointments at Constantin Film, one of Europe’s biggest – and most ambitious – of production powerhouses, Viola Jäger and Jan Ehlert has been named as its new Chief Content Officers.
Jan Ehlert will head up TV/streaming, Viola Jäger oversee content for theatrical/film; both report to Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben.
For years, Constantin has built its business on big international hits, such as the “Resident Evil” franchise, and a rock-solid domestic business powered by national blockbusters, such as, most recently, “Chantal and the Magic Kingdom,” which has sold over 2.6 million admissions in Germany.
Coming just a couple of months after Berben took over formally from Martin Moszkowicz as Constantin Film CEO, the new appointments are a play for continuity. Ehlert joined Moovie in 2000, just a year after Constantin head Berndt Eichinger had bought the Berben-headed company. Focusing on TV in his now 24-year career at Constantin Film,...

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

Of the many different puzzle types in Simogo’s Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, the central one is a maze, and the way in which you interact with it speaks to the game’s all-encompassing brilliance. You keep getting sucked into the maze in different ways from the game’s traditional third-person view, dead ends visible from afar, and from a tighter angle that claustrophobically limits your view to hallways, their floral wallpaper rippling with menace.
Then, the maze’s pattern bleeds into an optional (and more complex) knock-off of a Pac-Man stage. Your path becomes the solution to other puzzles. You’re pursued by phantasms who recall the central figure of René Magritte’s The Son of Man but with mazes for faces instead of apples. Impressively, the more the game foregrounds the maze-like elements, the more it reveals Lorelei and the Laser Eyes to be more like a labyrinth,...

The Resident Evil series has been on a roll lately. Whether it be the exceptional remakes Capcom keeps producing, or the continuation of the series with games like Village, it’s clear that there’s no stopping the most popular zombie game series ever. And the recent rumors only add more excitement to the fray.
Not only have leaks of the upcoming installment started spreading, but recently, rumors of a potential remake of Resident Evil 1, yes, the original game, have started surfacing. Though these are still rumors, there seems to be good enough evidence to suggest that this remake will take fruition and should keep hardcore fans happy until the next big original game.

It’s not Resident Evil 9, but another much-awaited Capcom title that we might finally get more information about during the upcoming PlayStation showcase that’s allegedly happening sometime this month.
Pragmata, which was last said to have been delayed indefinitely by its team, has just had important information leaked about its plot. And with the timing of the supposed showcase happening later this month, will we finally get an official update about it?
Instead of Resident Evil 9, Fans Are Excited for Pragmata
Could it be that Pragmata is nearing release?

It was originally announced in June 2020 and was slated for release in 2022, before being delayed to 2023, and then again for an indefinite amount of time.

James Cameron’s Hollywood career has been nothing but outstanding throughout his many decades as a movie director. In the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, Cameron confidently holds several top spots; he’s famous and celebrated across different genres from romantic drama to sci-fi; and he’s unapologetic when it comes to work, being a perfectionist to the bone.
But even James Cameron has his guilty cinematic pleasures — and he doesn’t shy away from them.
What Is James Cameron’s Guilty Pleasure Movie?
Generally speaking, you’d expect the director of Cameron’s scale to indulge in something huge, dramatic, and classic, but that’s not exactly the case. While talking to Empire in 2020, the Avatar director admitted that his favorite flick is… A “cheesy and formulaic” live-action video game adaptation from 2002, over two decades ago.

To call Sfb Games’s Crow Country pleasant would seem to clash with its horror setting, which is played reasonably straight. The game’s setting is an abandoned amusement park, whose ransacked corridors are now home to a horde of rotting mutants. But Crow Country nonetheless exudes a rather cozy atmosphere, with its lo-fi style bathing this house of horrors in a warm glow of nostalgia. The colors pop beneath a hazy PS1-esque filter, and the textures are smooth and shiny, reminiscent of early 3D’s plasticene aesthetics.
Blood pools beneath monsters in a perfect, shimmering circle, and characters like the game’s protagonist, Mara Forest, are squat and cartoonish, more of a piece with the 3D polygonal models from the original Final Fantasy VII than the more realistic character models from the horror touchstones of the PS1 era like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. From the overhead camera perspective,...

I’m always amazed that during the original PlayStation era, we were graced with a pair of survival horror games that would be two very different tonal blueprints for the genre going forward. Resident Evil became the model for the more B-movie route, with gory thrills and eerie mysteries, while Silent Hill would show us something a bit more in the vein of David Lynch, featuring more surrealism and introspection. We’ve had some really excellent Silent Hill-esque ones in the last few years, with standouts like Signalis and Homebody, but I personally haven’t been as grabbed by the ones that try to do Resident Evil.
Crow Country, from the small team at Sfb Games, changed that for me.
Crow Country is set in 1990 and casts you as Mara Forest, a young woman investigating the titular amusement park, which mysteriously closed two years prior. Obviously, something sinister is afoot,...

The gaming industry is going through a very tough time. News of layoffs and studio closures are getting far too common, with reports of Take-Two shutting down Rollerdrome developer Roll7 going public just a few days ago, and Deliver Us Mars developer KeokeN also laying off its entire team.
Now, it’s been devastatingly discovered that Xbox has shuttered four studios under the Bethesda umbrella, with one of them having delivered arguably the best Xbox game in recent years.

Xbox’s closure of four of its game development studios – Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Games – has sent shockwaves throughout the industry. The studios were part of the platform holder’s acquisition of Zenimax back in 2021.
Several developers have spoken out in support of the shuttered studios, criticizing Microsoft’s pricey acquisitions over the past few years and wondering which studios could be next. Even Helldivers 2 director & Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt expresses sympathy for one affected studio in particular.
Johan Pilestedt Wonders Why Xbox Didn’t Sell Off Tango
Selling off Tango to the highest bidder would’ve net Xbox some money, and the studio wouldn’t have to be closed.
In a recent tweet, Pilestedt honed in on the closure of Tango Gameworks, stating that he couldn’t fathom why Xbox axed the Japanese studio instead of separating it from its first-party lineup and selling it off.

With the next generation of video games, things are more aligned with the open-world genre than a linear narrative. The upcoming Tomb Raider and Resident Evil games could share the same fate. Popular titles like Call of Duty took the liberty to experiment by stepping outside their traditional approach. It turns out fans are comfortable with the linear storyline unless they are playing Warzone.
Capcom’s franchise switched their gameplay from third-person perspective (Tpp) to first-person perspective (Fpp) in 2017 with Resident Evil 7, which was the first full-length game to use their in-house engine. None of the Tr games has done anything like that, nor has it explored open-world concepts before. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider could be considered a symbiosis between an open-world and linear narrative.
Tomb Raider Being Open-World Doesn’t Sit Well with Fans
Lara from Tomb Raider was originally going to be a character named Fletcher.

Gore Verbinski would seem to have hit a snag in his big-budget blockbuster career after his Lone Ranger movie for Disney became a notoriously bloated flop. However, he was able to return with a smaller directorial effort after that, with the suspense film A Cure for Wellness. It has been eight years since the release of A Cure for Wellness, and Verbinski returns from his hiatus to helm an action-adventure film with the humorous title Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. Content Warning was released on April 1, 2024, as part of Landfall’s tradition of releasing a game on April Fool’s Day. The game managed to attract the attention of a large fan base by climbing to the top of the Steam charts. The studio did not have great expectations that this survival horror game would become a big trend, but its rapid success made it one of the most successful indie games of this year.
Content Warning received its first major update a while back, bringing a ton of features and fixes, which has further increased fan satisfaction with it. Moreover, there will be some potential collaborations on the studio’s calendar, which may be something that will make the title even more popular than it is now.

Even those only vaguely familiar with video games probably know names like Super Mario, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. They’re the franchises that have come to dominate gaming over the last 50 years or so. Some of those franchises are currently being updated almost every year, while the new releases in others have become milestone events that seem to reshape the industry. New franchises come along and others fade away, but the biggest and best video game franchises have been slowly growing for years and, in some cases, decades.
Honestly, it can all be a little difficult to keep up with. For as significant as gaming’s biggest franchises are, they’re also…well, big. Over a long enough period of time, it’s easy to forget when specific games in certain franchises were released and where exactly they fit into the history of those series. You may know the names,...

If there was a list of the most violent games ever, Mortal Kombat and the Grand Theft Auto franchise would surely be on it. Which other games would make it to the list? When it comes to violence in video games, we have a long list.
So, it is unsurprising that one of the first things people look for in games is combat mechanics. How smooth is it? How responsive are the combat controls? These are the questions that keep getting asked in community forums. But what of the amount of violence? Can violence even be quantified?

I should’ve guessed I was in for something sadistic with Pneumata when the first enemy exploded.
Pneumata is a throwback to an earlier period of survival horror. It’s cramped, filthy, and dark, with a real sense of decay and unease baked into the environment, and finding a box of bullets is like a gold strike.
I figured I knew the deal, so when a big twisted mutant burst out of a bathroom stall at me, I pulled out a baseball bat and took its head off. It dropped, but I hadn’t noticed the big, conspicuous blister on its back.
Once the mutant died, that blister exploded hard enough to knock off a few points of my health. The next thing I knew, I was backpedaling and screaming as a spider the size of a housecat tried to gnaw my character’s ankles off.
By the way, if...
