Principal photography has begun on “The Captive,” a historical epic from “The Others’” Alejandro Amenábar, starring Julio Peña (“Berlin”) as “Don Quixote” author Miguel de Cervantes, a prisoner of Ottoman corsairs, seen in a very first still from the film, alongside Alessandro Borghi (“Suburra”), playing his captor, which has been shared in exclusivity with Variety.

Exclusive: Here’s some more intriguing casting for Luc Besson’s big-budget reimagining of the Dracula story, Dracula – A Love Tale.
Zoë Bleu (Gonzo Girl), daughter of actress Rosanna Arquette, is joining as Elisabeta/Mina, while rising Italian actress Matilda De Angelis, who plays the lead in Agbo and Amazon’s upcoming Citadel: Diana, will play Mina’s friend Maria. These are the roles played by Winona Ryder and Sadie Frost, respectively, in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 version (though Mina’s friend in that film and the book is called Lucy).
As we revealed in February, Caleb Landry Jones (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri) is playing Dracula and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) is understood to be playing the role of a priest.
Lucy and Leon filmmaker and Taken creator Besson is in pre-production on the movie, which will shoot next month in France. Additional casting is underway.

Exclusive: Sky Studios and Groenlandia are readying feature film director Sydney Sibilia’s first TV drama series. Someone Killed Spiderman – Accidentally Famous (working title) is for Sky Italia and is about a non-conformist teenager who becomes on half of successful musical duo 883.
The show first came to attention last year, and the package has now come together with Sky Studios and Banijay-owned Groenlandia co-producing the show.
It will be set in 1980s Italy and follow frustrated teenager Max, who meets future musical partner Mauro and goes on to reach stardom. It is inspired by the story of how Italian pop band 883 was formed and the title is the same as duo’s iconic first album.
Sibilia is creating, writing and producing through his Banijay-owned production house, Groenlandia, which recently launched Netflix drama Supersex. This marks a first television venture for the film director, whose features include Can Quit Whenever I Want and Rose Island.

Exclusive: It was on the set of Sky and HBO’s We Are Who We Are that Lorenzo Mieli asked Francesca Manieri, a screenwriter known for crafting stories about female empowerment, to pen a TV series about Rocco Siffredi, the infamous hardcore porn star. Initially, she could barely believe it. “I laughed,” she recalls. “I was sure he was joking.”
Only he wasn’t, and after a week of deliberation, she said yes, having realized it would give her the chance to explore “the core of contemporary masculinity.”
Manieri — known for films such as Rose Island, Italian Race, The First King and The Miracle and as co-writer of We Are Who We Are — went away and drew up her plan for a series that would allow her to “turn the tables” on the narratives men have dictated to women for, well, probably ever: a series about what porn represents and how modern masculinity is constructed.

Banijay Buys Italy’s Groenlandia Group, Maker of ‘Romulus’ and ‘The Incredible Story of Rose Island’
Banijay has acquired control of Italy’s expanding Groenlandia Group, which is a producer on ITV’s “Romulus” skein and made recent Netflix Italian original film “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” among other titles.
The Rome-based company, headed by directors and producers Matteo Rovere and Sydney Sibilia, has been steadily growing since its founding in 2014. Besides “Romulus” — both the film and the TV series which Rovere directed, and “Rose Island,” helmed by Sibilia, Groenlandia’s recent output also includes Leonardo D’Agostini’s widely exported soccer comedy drama “The Champion,” starring Stefano Accorsi, and Ludovico De Martino’s actioner “The Beast,” co-produced with Warner Bros. and now streaming globally on Netflix.
Groenlandia also comprises Ascent Films, founded and managed by Andrea Paris, who will keep operating in the shingle, in which it has had a majority stake since 2014. Ascent is an incubator shingle focused on identifying and establishing new talent.

Currently shooting her upcoming Netflix series “Lidia,” about Italy’s first female lawyer, Lidia Poët, actor Matilda De Angelis was joined by her agent Gianni Chiffi for a masterclass at Torino Film Festival.
“When we decided to open our agency in 2014, Matilda was the first person we met. She was about to begin her cinematic journey and if I hadn’t met her, I wouldn’t be here. That’s the truth,” said Chiffi, who co-founded Volver alongside Consuelo De Andreis. Sophia Loren just won her 7th Best Actress statue at home in Italy
Strangely we never saw any of the trades print a full list of Italy's David Di Donatello nominations this year, always just linking to the Italian site which does not have the list displayed in a way where you can copy and paste it easily. Alas. Hidden Away, a biopic of an obscure artist, led the nominations and came out the big winner too. Bad Tales was not far behind in the nomination count but won only one prize. Netflix's Italian original Rose Island had the third most nominations.
The awards were held a few days ago (oops) so it's past time to share the winners. Sophia Loren's Oscar hopes may not have panned out stateside but she won yet again in Italy for The Life Ahead. A few notes after the jump.

Photo: ‘Stuck Apart’/Netflix Sometimes, we all need a little something…different. Whether you’re a casual filmmaker or self-acclaimed cinephile, it does good to stretch our Cinema muscles and put ourselves out of our comfort zones. If you’re a fan of Charlie Kaufmann or Jean-Luc Godard this new Netflix release will be right up your alley; if not, it’s worth a watch anyway. ‘Stuck Apart’ (aka ‘Azizler’) is a quirky, existential Turkish feature by brothers Dural and Yagmar Taylan. This is the fourth feature film from the brother duo, preceded by the critically acclaimed ‘Okul’, ‘Küçük Kiyamet’ (aka ‘The Little Apocalypse’) and ‘Vavien’. The premise follows the middle-aged Aziz (Engin Günaydin) through a mid-life crisis, an unfortunate hot tub incident, and what might be the longest breakup ever put to screen - that is, if time has meaning at all in this unusual piece of Cinema. Photo: 'Rose Island'/Netflix We open on an upbeat song, titles informing us that we are in 1968. A government official enters an almost dystopian-looking building to find a coughing, shivering, and desperate man. Upon asking what he wants, the man explains that he has come to petition the Council of Europe to save his island. “You bought an island?” an official asks. “No,” the shivering man replies. “I made it.” So begins ‘L'incredibile storia dell'Isola delle Rose’ (‘Rose Island’ is the English title), the incredible true story of one engineer’s quest to build his own country in the middle of the ocean. The film, directed by Sydney Sibilia (‘I Can Quit Whenever I Want’) and starring Elio Germano and Matilda De Angelis, captures the endeavors of Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa to gain true independence and freedom from the government and pursue a life unrestricted by the inconvenience of the law.

To mark the release we had the pleasure of speaking to all four of the aforementioned actors – and be sure to watch both of our enjoyable chats with them in their entirety below, as they talk about the profound themes that the film explores, as we all seem to contemplate just how tempting it is to go off and live on an island. The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

In 1968, idealistic Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa founded an independent micro nation on a tiny island he built on a platform supported by steel pylons off the coast of Rimini, Italy, outside Italian territorial waters. He named the platform — which had its own bar/restaurant, post office and radio station — the Republic of Rose Island.

It has begun. The steady trickle of films about Labradors who save Christmas, American girls marrying European princes, and parents learning that their kids are more important than their jobs, is with us. Netflix is responsible for a good proportion of the above, with several new festive titles arriving over the next few weeks.
If that does nothing for you, then you might be more interested in the arrival of three non-tinsel films on the service this month. There’s David Fincher’s Mank streaming from December 4th, followed on the 18th by Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, featuring the much-missed Chadwick Boseman, with George Clooney-starring The Midnight Sky landing a couple of days before Christmas on the 23rd.
TV-wise, there’s a new season of animated comedy Big Mouth on December 4th, the debut of slick-looking Shondaland period drama Bridgerton on the 25th, and right at the end of the month,...

After a stellar October full of spooky flicks and other great releases, Netflix has already come out swinging in November, too. The initial few drops of the month have brought a solid collection of fresh content guaranteed to be filled with at least a few things that you’re going to be anxious to add to your list, such as the hilarious family comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop, unnerving sci-fi flick Prospect, and the Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock.
But if you’re feeling a little impatient and want to begin planning out your December schedule, too, you’ll love this good news – Netflix has already announced a pretty nice selection of additions coming next month, including a handful of highly-anticipated originals.
Probably the most noteworthy thing arriving in December – at least, so far – is the fourth and final season of the hit show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, based on...

Ever dream of escaping to your own personal island? Netflix's Italian comedy feature Rose Island tells the story of Giorgio Rosa, who set off to create his own nation that was separate from Italy. Rosa's endeavor may have been the talk of Europe decades ago, but the bizarre tale has fallen through the cracks as time has gone by - here's what you need to know about his misadventures.
Born in 1925 in Bologna, Rosa was an Italian engineer. He created the short-lived Rose Island in 1967, designing and financing the construction of a 400-meters-squared platform that was suspended above the Mediterranean with slender pilotis (think support columns). He started with empty pillars, then inserted steel tubes in the pillars, and pushed them into the sea floor, filling them with cement to avoid corrosion.
Rose Island was about 12 kilometers away from the shores of Rimini, just outside of Italy's territorial waters.

Saban Films has launched a new trailer for rom-com ‘Love, Weddings & Other Disasters’ featuring Diane Keaton and Jeremy Irons.
With a couple’s impending wedding as the backdrop, the film weaves multiple storylines as it follows the search for love by a colourful group of characters including an inexperienced wedding planner (Grace) nicknamed “The Wedding Trasher”; a fussy celebrity caterer (Irons); his blind date (Keaton); and a tour-bus guide (Andrew Bachelor) looking for his Cinderella. How their lives and loves intersect is half the fun in this film that proves romance is alive and well… and as crazy as ever!
Written and directed by Dennis Dugan, the film stars Diane Keaton, Jeremy Irons, Maggie Grace, Jesse McCartney, Chandra West, Diego Boneta and Andrew Bachelor.
Also in trailers – New trailer drops for ‘Rose Island’ from Netflix
The film has a US release in cinemas and On-Demand December 4th.

"To change the world, you've got to risk a little." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Italian film titled Rose Island, from filmmaker Sydney Sibilia (of the I Can Quit Whenever I Want series). This reminds me of the UK film Pirate Radio about the ship broadcasting in international waters, or about the party-on-a-homemade-raft experiment examined in the doc The Raft. An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world's attention. Values are tested when the Italian government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. This has a more light-hearted, comedic tone to it in addition to its let's-take-on-the-Italian-government boldness. Starring Elio Germano as Giorgio Rosa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Tom Wlaschiha, Luca Zingaretti, François Cluzet, Matilda De Angelis, & Ascanio Balbo. This looks like a good story and a fun film! Take a look.

Netflix has debuted a new trailer for its Italian comedy drama based on a true story ‘Rose Island’.
Giorgio, a gifted yet misunderstood engineer has hit rock bottom – he’s been fired from his job, his parents won’t speak to him, and the love of his life has ditched him after he accidentally gets them both arrested (long story…). Sick of the stuffy rules of Italian society of the late 60s, Giorgio hatches an impossible plan; he will build his own island in the middle of the sea. Joined by a team of revolutionaries and outcasts, the Republic of Rose Island is founded, independence is declared and Giorgio is appointed President. However, team values and resilience are tested, as the Italian Prime Minister decides Giorgio’s idealistic island is Italy’s Enemy Number One.

If you build it they will come. That’s the simple, idealistic, and possibly comically naive idea behind, “Rose Island,” Italian writer/director Sydney Sibilia‘s whimsical new comedy with a big-sized heart coming to Netflix in December. Known for the celebrated 2014 Italian crime comedy “I Can Quit Whenever I Want” and its two subsequent sequels, who builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world’s attention.

The Mediterranean island nation of Malta has long been attracting international film and TV productions mainly for tales with either a strong marine or biblical element, and often for limited portions of the overall shoot.
Now Malta is trying to make a quantum leap to lure a wider scope of productions for longer stays. And Hollywood is keen for that to happen, but conditions aren’t quite there yet.
“I was in L.A. two weeks ago, making the rounds. I saw roughly 20 companies and producers, and 75% of them, they all asked me about Malta,” says prominent German line producer Holger Reibiger who in July was on the island for two weeks shooting the second season of Sky Germany’s high-end TV series “Das Boot.”
“They are all interested in Malta, but they need stage space,” Reibiger notes. “Hollywood producers are not thinking about: ‘We just want to shoot there for 12 days,...

Netflix regards Italy as one its key international growth markets. That strategy was further confirmed today by a report in Bloomberg revealing a seven-picture deal between the streamer and local broadcasting giant Mediaset, which is run by the family of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
According to reports, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings will officially reveal details about the pact next Tuesday. Netflix declined to comment.
Netflix has built a strong presence in Italy via local acquisitions, original TV series and at festivals such as Venice. The streamer is said to be approaching 2 million subs in the region and has lined up €200m investment in local content over the next few years.
Earlier this week we revealed news of the streamer joining The Incredible Story Of Rose Island (L’Incredibile Storia Dell’Isola Delle Rose), a comedy feature from Sydney Sibilia, director of the successful Italian franchise Smetto Quando Voglia.
