Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

More background fluff from the streamer, this time from Mean Girls director Mark Waters with a splashy Thailand location
Despite experience mostly insisting caution, certain markers still allow one to naively daydream that a new Netflix comedy might be worth more than a background half-watch while ironing. A big name, an experienced writer, a genuine studio-trained director, some substantive source material, anything to allow us to glide on the brief hope that we’re not in hammy, Hallmark-adjacent territory.
This thinking sometimes works – 2019’s Let It Snow was based on a solid YA novel, 2021’s Moxie had Amy Poehler in front of and behind the camera, this year’s Players benefited from the considerable charm of star Gina Rodriguez – but it too often makes precious little difference. For Mother’s Day in the US, the streamer has Mother of the Bride, a breezy comedy that arrives from director Mark Waters,...

Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

While most of the toys in the Toy Story universe have been harmless, Toy Story 4 is returning to its Big Baby days with a sinister vintage doll named Gabby Gabby, voiced by none other than Christina Hendricks.
Hendricks began her career as a model for well over a decade. Before her big break, you may have recognized her on shows such as ER, Firefly, and Kevin Hill. But over the years, Hendricks's standout role definitely has been that of Joan Holloway on Mad Men. Her part as the formidable and omniscient '60s office manager on the AMC series garnered her a total of six Emmy nominations during her run between 2007 and 2015. Of course, her momentum on the small screen didn't end with Mad Men. Hendricks also recently appeared as Olivia Rogers on Amazon's The Romanoffs and currently stars as suburban mom-turned-criminal Beth Boland on NBC's Good Girls.

Qatar-based beIN Media Group is seeking to sell up to 50% of Miramax in a deal that would value the studio founded in 1979 by Bob and Harvey Weinstein at $650 million, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
A representative for beIN, contacted by Variety, said the company had no comment on the report, which is based on unnamed sources.
Miramax, which has a 700-title library, is known for producing such titles as “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Shakespeare in Love” and “Good Will Hunting,” most of which were made during the studio’s 17 years as a Disney label. The studio was sold in 2016 by its private equity owners for a reported $1 billion to beIN Media Group, which owns the company in its entirety. The $650 million valuation suggested by the Wall Street Journal report would represent barely two-thirds of the reported 2016 sale price.

Exclusive: Shrink, a original IP based on Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld’s story about a female psychiatrist with a superhero clientele is being produced by Doug Belgrad and his production company 2.0 with producer Adam Fields and Liefeld at Sony Pictures. The project would mine the same comedic action vein as the R-rated Deadpool franchise, which is a wise-cracking, subversive twist on superhero movies.
The story has been described as a high-concept twist on Analyze This, and we hear that this was a mid-six against a seven figure deal for the comic book creator. Sony had no comment.
The project was found by Fields who basically dived into Sony’s 30 years of abandoned development and pulled out what looks to be a plumb project and potentially huge action/comic franchise for the studio from one of the signature names in the comic book industry — Liefeld, who became a fan-favorite artist in...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has stepped up for Deadtown, an Entertainment One and Grey Matter Entertainment script that will be developed for a pilot by Shauna Cross. Deadtown is an adaptation of the Catherynne M. Valente novella The Refrigerator Monologues and the hourlong premise is a blueprint to create an original superhero universe set in the modern era with an underlying theme of female empowerment.
Five recently-dead women meet in Deadtown, a purgatory where they discover that their entire lives were merely in service to the superhero men they happened to cross paths with, resulting in each of their deaths. Or in comic book terms, they were “refrigerated”–frozen out of the story once they provided emotional backstory for the men. Until now. They start to discover their own powers, tell their sides of the narrative, and decide to write their own damn stories. And a group of seemingly ordinary women discover their own true power.

Miramax has secured a multi-bank revolving credit facility for $300 million led by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Mufg Union Bank that extends for five years.
The deal was announced Thursday, less than a week before the launch of the Cannes Film Festival, which Miramax executives will attend. It provides financing for the studio to produce and finance four to six films a year as well as deficit finance two to three television series per year, ramping up their slate and providing more strategy for growth.
“We are thrilled to commence a valued partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Mufg Union Bank,” said Miramax CEO Bill Block. “The credit facility allows Miramax to efficiently finance its current and future production slate as we shift to increase our growth.”
Block and Miramax’s executive VPs of finance Dennis Hands, Jeremy Gross, and David Cragnotti negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.

Far from bringing joy this Santa is fuelled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred and this Christmas Willie teams up again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (Tony Cox), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.

Back in 2014 when Matthew Vaughn was adapting lesser-known material for the screen, in the comic series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, expectations were not exactly sky high. Few really knew what to expect from Kingsman: The Secret Service but even fewer expected the film to be the success it was. Blending a stylish cinematic aesthetic with Brosnan era techno thrills and Moore era comedy, Kingsman boasted crazily inventive action scenes, charismatic comedy that nailed the right balance of homage and parody and featured some enthused performances by a cast fully committed to the spy caper chaos. Naturally, a sequel was guaranteed but as we all know, following up a sleeper hit or big screen novelty can be a difficult task (see: Monsters: The Dark Continent, Piranha 3Dd, Now You See Me 2 and Bad Santa 2). So, has Kingsman: The Golden Circle managed it?
Well, no, it hasn’t...

When our own Heather Wixson spoke with Wish Upon director John R. Leonetti, he mentioned that a more extreme version of the PG-13 film would be released on home media. If you were excited about the announcement, then your wish is about to come true, because Broad Green Pictures has now announced an October 10th home media release of the supernatural horror film (read Heather's review here), including a Director's Unrated Cut with all-new footage not seen in theaters:

Hammond brothers let go of approximately 20% of workforce.
Broad Green co-founders Gabriel and Daniel Hammond have closed their production department and laid off 15 of the 75-strong staff following a string of under-performing films.
Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, who serve as CEO and chief creative officer respectively, plan to reconfigure Broad Green’s operations and find a new way to source films.
The acquisitions team is expected to be on the ground in Toronto and other festivals, and the company has scheduled a November 22 release for Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones caper film Villa Capri.
Around 50 development projects have gone into turnaround. Gabriel Hammond, a former Wall Street wunderkind who along with his brother used their own money to fund Broad Green, confirmed the development on Wednesday in a remarkably frank interview with Deadline Hollywood in which he said the brothers accepted all blame for failure.

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

Netflix has announced the list of films that will be available to stream in July. The list includes new never-before-seen original films, as well as documentaries, comedies, animated titles and some classic movies. Check out some of our favorite new offerings below, along with the complete list of all the new additions.

1. “To the Bone” (available July 14)
Marti Noxon’s feature directorial debut was a hit out of Sundance, where the Lily Collins-starring drama about eating disorders won over audiences for its nimble ability to tell a compelling dramatic story interspersed with well-earned humor. Sketched from Noxon’s own experiences with anorexia and bolstered by a star turn from the always-reliable Collins, the film is both important and entertaining, and it should be able to reach a very wide audience on the streaming platform. Do not miss it.
2. “Punch-Drunk Love” (available July 1)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s lauded 2002 romantic dramedy features Adam Sandler in one of his few “hey, this guy can really act!” roles and includes some of the auteur’s most indelible shots and richest observations about life and love. It’s a modern classic, and now it can be piped right into your home. I’m lookin’ at your Netflix queue and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna fuckin’ smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. It’s so pretty.
3. “Chasing Coral” (available July 14)
Jeff Orlowski won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year for his newest feature, a stunning documentary about the fight to protect coral reefs from becoming extinct. Featuring breathtaking and distressing underwater footage, the movie puts into perspective just how endangered coral reefs are and tracks the effort to save them.
4. “Lion” (available July 9)
This heart-wrenching true story was an awards season juggernaut earlier this year, featuring stellar turns from Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. Based on the unbelievable life of young Saroo Brierley, the feature follows his separation from his family and his startling trip back to them many years later, aided by — for real — Google Maps and his own indomitable heart. Bring tissues.
5. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (available July 18)
The very first standalone “Star Wars” spinoff follows a motley crew of rogues, criminals, rebels, and scallawags as they attempt to steal the plans to the monstrous Death Star in a bid to really just totally stick it to the Empire and Darth Vader. Knowing how it ends — they get them! and…some other stuff, too! — doesn’t dilute its tension and creativity, and it features a banger of an ensemble cast. Let this one tide you over before the next entry in the rapidly expanding movie universe.
6. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (available July 1)
The early part of the month is heavy on kid-leaning classics, from “Free Willy” to “The Mighty Ducks,” but it’s hard to top the potency of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic. Gather the whole family around the TV and get heavy on the Reese’s Pieces, and enjoy one of the best films ever made about childhood, friendship, and letting go.

With so many movies and shrinking theater audiences, a great trailer can make a world of difference when it comes to drumming up hype for a film. Trailers have become so dynamic in the last two decades that they earned their own awards show.
The Golden Trailer Awards celebrated its 18th year this year, and Warner Bros.’ smash hit superhero movie of the summer, “Wonder Woman,” took home top prize for its trailer titled “What She Is.” “Wonder Woman” also won in the best fantasy/adventure category. A wonder, indeed.

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame is set to star in Domino, a new thriller from director Brian De Palma (that's nothing to do with the Tony Scott movie of the same name). According to The Wrap, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones will co-star in the film.
The pair will play Danish cops who are on the hunt for the person who murdered Coster-Waldau's partner. What they don't know is that their chief suspect is an American CIA agent in pursuit of an Isis terror cell.
The movie does not have a distributor yet but will head to the film market at this year's Cannes Film Festival in search of backing.

The premise to Richie Keen’s Fist Fight is simple, to a point where it’s hard to fathom quite how it’s sustained a feature length narrative. It’s, quite literally, about two men having a fight, and in the most contrived way imaginable that is stretched out across 90 painfully unfunny minutes, with the one paramount, lone joke being that of teachers acting more immaturely than the students they educate. And believe me, it gets tedious pretty quickly.
Charlie Day plays Andy Campbell, a beleaguered high school teacher who remains perpetually bemused, and almost impressed, with the sheer level of irresponsibility in the pranks pulled by his students. Fearing his job may be on the line, and with a pregnant wife at home, life is somewhat stressful – and it’s made even more so when he finds himself in the principle’s office next to the...

When I reviewed Bad Santa 2 here at We Are Movie Geeks, I wrote: “Thornton’s Willy is still an amusing, deadpan movie character with the power to shock, the perfect antidote to the usual saccharine Christmas confection. Whether he’s swigging booze, cussing at the children he has no patience with, or having rough sex in an alley (or bathroom), Willy epitomizes everything a street corner Santa shouldn’t be. Matching Thornton in terms of coarseness is Kathy Bates, but there is surprising depth to the relationship between mother and son, and much of their back and forth is side-splitting….” read the rest of my review Here

Allied (Robert Zemeckis)
That thing we can’t take for granted: a film whose many parts – period piece, war picture, blood-spattered actioner, deception-fueled espionage thriller, sexy romance, and, at certain turns, comedy – can gracefully move in conjunction and separate from each other, just as its labyrinthine-but-not-quite plot jumps from one setpiece to the next with little trouble in maintaining a consistency of overall pleasure. Another late-career triumph for Robert Zemeckis,...

A showdown’s a’ comin’! Not on the main street of Dodge City, but at the multiplex once again. The final throw down between the hero and villain has been a staple of cinema since its earliest days, mainly in action films and primarily the western. There have been countless screen versions of that infamous incident , the gunfight at the O.K. Corral (the most famous being the Kirk Douglas/Burt Lancaster 1950’s classic) . This most likely inspired many other “oaters”, the most celebrated being the iconic 1952 High Noon (which garnered an Oscar for star Gary Cooper). It’s set in real-time as the clock ticks to 12, while Will Kane readies himself for the arrival of the Miller gang. We’ve seen this plot used in many other genres, providing extra excitement to the final acts of every movie hero’s exploits from Rocky to Bond to Batman. But it...

It was baffling when distributor Broad Green Pictures pulled Lucy Walker’s “Untitled Buena Vista Social Club Documentary” from the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, the same day as its intended premiere, with a press release that said the “post production process has taken longer than expected.”
Nearly a month later, Broad Green has made no further comment on the film’s status, but its homepage still boasts that “Lucy Walker’s Buena Vista Social Club documentary will have it’s [sic] official world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival!”
That disconnect (and typo) could be a matter of sloppy site maintenance, but multiple IndieWire interviews with people familiar with Walker’s film and Broad Green suggest more complex issues dog the three-year-old would-be studio. (Walker declined to comment for this article; Broad Green executives didn’t respond to requests for comment.)

If there is one criticism to be had about Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures, it’s how conventional the storytelling formula is, abiding stringently to the tropes and beats of the genre. But when done in such an affectionate manner, and when telling such an important story, particularly pertinent now as America regresses, to present the narrative in such an accessible way is not necessarily a bad thing, ensuring this tale is told to many, and with impressive box office figures in the States, and a handful of Oscar nominations to boot, it’s proven to have been something of a triumph.
Based on a true story, we meet Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), with a broken down vehicle on the side of the road, having to explain themselves to a police officer – suspicious about the intentions...

John Carpenter just gave Michael Myers fans a huge reason to mark their calendars by announcing an October 19th, 2018 release date for Blumhouse and Miramax's new Halloween movie, which will be directed by David Gordon Green (Joe, Pineapple Express) from a screenplay he's writing with Danny McBride (Alien: Covenant, Eastbound & Down).
In addition to executive producing the new Halloween film, Carpenter might also help guide the franchise he began back in 1978 by providing the music for the film. Green and McBride will also be executive producing the anticipated project, along with Malek Akkad and Jason Blum. We have the official press release below with full details, including Carpenter's initial announcement of Green and McBride's involvement:

The future of film criticism in Australia is under a cloud, with the number of full-time salaried critics in the country down to a handful — by some estimates, just two people — in the face of a perfect storm of technological disruption, cratering freelance rates and arts funding cuts.
Coverage of the arts, already a marginal element of the news media, is particularly sensitive to the commercial pressures affecting journalism as a whole.
The last two salaried, fulltime film reviewers standing are believed to be Jason Di Rosso at the ABC and Leigh Paatsch at the Herald Sun, whose writing is syndicated across the News Ltd network.
Local magazine-turned-website FilmInk employs three critics, although they combine the role with other editorial or publishing tasks.
The rest of Australia.s film reviewing comes from a patchwork of freelancers and contributors, who are sometimes paid very little or asked to work for free.

Moviegoers, and I mean like Walker Percy desperation level moviegoers, the kind you see at 12:30 Am screenings of Bad Santa 2, they’ve been looking more pallid and dour than usual of late. Gone is what was left of the spring in their hop, the hop in their step. I see them marching, usually solo, with their Red Vines or Twizzlers, into the darkness, perhaps this time never to return no more again. But even the womb of a dim theater seems to offer little comfort these days to the diehard moviegoer. There is less dreaming now. I should know. […]...
