Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Liam Neeson thriller “The Marksman” defied pandemic norms with a three-month theatrical window. Five months after its release, it’s now available to rent at the standard-price $5.99 after a late-April Premium VOD debut. It claimed the #1 spot on all charts calculated after the mid-week shift. That includes FandangoNow, which ranks entries by the revenue accrued. That means it had more than triple the number of rentals as their #2 title, “Nobody,” which still costs $19.99.
VOD platforms otherwise saw ongoing success for familiar films, including “The Little Things.” The Denzel Washington action title was #1 at Spectrum, which as usual lags in reporting.
Noteworthy this week is the debut of three fresh titles, two of which are recent releases that went directly to standard pricing and saw immediate interest. “Together Together,” a comedy starring Patti Harrison and Ed Helms, and “French Exit” both saw traction. However, the real breakout is “North Hollywood,” apparently...

A simple price change created this week’s biggest shift in VOD viewing. “The Little Things,” the Denzel Washington-starring serial killer thriller that debuted day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, dropped its $19.99 premium VOD to $5.99. It rose to #1 at Apple TV and gained top-10 showings at FandangoNow and Google Play. Spectrum Cable’s chart should pick it up this week.
In its second week of PVOD play, “The Marksman” notched #1 at FandangoNow, #2 at Apple TV, and #3 at Google Play. That’s a strong response for the last two which, unlike FandangoNow, list by number of rentals rather than revenue.
“Nomadland,” newly reduced in price at Spectrum, placed #1 there. The Best Picture winner fell elsewhere, notching lower slots at Apple TV and GooglePlay. Original Screenplay winner “Promising Young Woman,” a presence for four months in PVOD and now VOD, was the only other Oscar recipient to remain on the lists.

That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

Danish director Niels Arden Oplev is still best known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (what, you mean you don’t remember Dead Man Down?), and he brings the same flat, TV movie aesthetic to this “sequel” to Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-horror. The original’s high concept plot is retained and given a 21st century makeover – although it’s still as hokey and dumb as Schumacher’s film, and once again fails to capitalise on its central conceit.
The premise of Flatliners is that a young med student, Courtney (Ellen Page), comes up with the bright idea of having her heart stopped, then started again, under controlled conditions. She employs the help of a group of fellow students, who see the experiment as a shortcut to bountiful medical careers.

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend’s box office was lower than expected with Kingsman: The Golden Circle failing to hit $40 million, The Lego Ninjago Movie barely earning $20 million, and Friend Request recording the worst wide opening of all-time with a mere $2 million across 2,500 screens. This week, Kingsman will be doing battle with the new Tom Cruise vehicle, American Made, while the Flatliners remake will most likely be dead on arrival. But will either movie be good? Let’s find out.
American Made

Repeat. whichever stupid title you prefer) in 2014, and while American Made is a completely different movie, we’re excited for their next collaboration. Liman is known for his fast and loose...

27 years ago a bunch of big names got together with Joel Schumacher and made a fairly standard “vacation” movie. It was a screwball idea, but it was entertaining enough.
For reasons no one can fathom, apart from some need to remake everything, we’re jumping into this well again, and while it looks really fantastic, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a pretty goofball premise that no one was exactly looking to revisit. It looks fantastic in large part because it’s directed by Niels Arden Oplev. Rarely has there been a director that has managed to leave people scratching their heads so much over nearly a decade. Rocketing onto the scene (the American scene anyway) with 2009’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Niels then followed with the lackluster Dead Man Down, a pretty cool foreign film, Speed Walking, a few episodes of television, and now a remake of a 1990 cornball,...

In a post-Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping world, the concept of Flatliners loses a bit of its edge after viewing Bill Hader’s one-off scene, but nonetheless a remake will arrive this fall. Starring Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons, the first trailer has landed, which followed a group of medical students who experiment with dying, then coming back to life.
“We viewed the original movie as a jumping-off point – and are now telling a re-imagined story with new characters,” producer Michael Douglas tells Fandango, who debuted the trailer. “We have learned more and more about the world, and science keeps answering so many questions and taking us to so many previously unexplored places – but still no one knows what happens after we die. That’s a question we’ll be asking ourselves forever.”

Since directing the immensely popular “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” in 2009, director Niels Arden Oplev hasn’t been hitting the big screen that much aside from the largely panned “Dead Man Down.” Instead, he’s been cutting his teeth across the television landscape with popular series’ such as “Mr. Robot” and genre fare like “Under the Dome.” That’s about to change with his latest film “Flatliners,” a somewhat odd choice for his first film since 2013 but one that he’s acquired quite a cast for.

“Flatliners” is being revived, and one of its original stars is coming with it. Kiefer Sutherland has joined the remake of the 1990 film after some rescheduling allowed him to also fulfill his obligations to the ABC series “Designated Survivor.” Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens are all appearing in the film as well. Deadline first broke the news of Sutherland’s casting.

As of right now, the actor is the only original star returning; Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt aren’t currently involved. “Flatliners” starred the quintet as a group of medical students who, not unlike kids today playing the knockout game, purposefully stop their own hearts in order to trigger near-death experiences. As you might imagine, this doesn’t end up being the best idea.

Wade Barrett’s reason for leaving WWE could be to pursue a career in soccer punditry. Dave Meltzer notes in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter “I do know that Barrett had been interested in being a soccer analyst in the U.K. after his wrestling days were over.”
As a passionate Preston North End fan, and having grown up in the same region as massive clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United, Barrett is very knowledgeable on all things soccer. While punditry jobs are filled with big names in the UK, he could perhaps have a career talking about soccer on the major Us networks. He’s a confident speaker and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t make a go for it if he has the ambition.
He’s also a big Rugby Union fan, which could be another avenue of sports analysis for him to work in.

Ellen Page is in talks to star in the upcoming reboot of the 1990 sci-fi thriller "Flatliners" at Sony Pictures.
The Peter Filardi scripted original centered on five medical students - Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt - who bring subject themselves to near-death experiences in order to see if anything lies beyond.
After being revived they soon find themselves struggling to determine fantasy from reality as physical manifestations of childhood sins revisit them.
Niels Arden Oplev ("Dead Man Down") will helm from a screenplay by Ben Ripley. David Blackman and Laurence Mark are producing.

As the X-movies’ Kitty Pride, Ellen Page can run through walls and send others’ consciousness through time. Now, it appears she’s ready to dabble in the afterlife, as the actress is in talks to star in the long-developing reboot of 1990s sci-fi thriller Flatliners. If you're unfamiliar with the original, it starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt, and involved medical students causing themselves all kinds of surreal mental anguish with their ill-advised near-death experiments. Source Code’s Ben Ripley has written the most recent draft of the script, which will likely update the story to include more modern science. And probably less neon, but then the original was a Joel Schumacher film. Dead Man Down’s Niels Arden Oplev was attached to direct in 2013, and Sony has been trying to bring this one to life since at least 2011. It appears to be in a state of limbo,...

Colin Farrell’s a great actor, but he’s kind of box-office poison.
Just look at this track record.
Total Recall? Bombed.
Fright Night? Nobody bothered.
Dead Man Down? Yup, I don’t really remember that either.
In fact, aside from his hysterical supporting turn in 2011’s Horrible Bosses, S.W.A.T was the actor’s last legitimate hit. That came out in 2003. Granted, since Miami Vice 9 years ago, he’s not been making particularly commercial choices, but for a man still considered an A-lister that reads pretty alarmingly.
Well that’s likely to change with the news he’s been cast in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates and written by original novelist J.K Rowling, Farrell has landed a major role alongside Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice).

It's hard to pin down Noomi Rapace. The former girl with the dragon tattoo has been doing everything from big blockbusters ("Prometheus") to cheap genre fare ("Dead Man Down"). And now in another unexpected move, she's going to make a movie with Will Smith. The actress has signed up for "Brilliance," based on the novel by Marcus Sakey. Adapted by David Koepp ("Secret Window," "Mortdecai") the story is set in "a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called 'brilliants.' At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting gifts who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist, another such brilliant who intends to start a civil war." Another movie about people with extraordinary gifts who are also exiles? Hooray. Someone named Julius Onah will direct. [Deadline] Mischa Barton, probably the least successful cast member in her post-"The O.C." career,...

Julius Onah is directing the movie based on Marcus Sakey's novel.

This past weekend, Indonesian action movie The Raid 2 expanded nationwide in to 954 theaters. It was arriving two years after its predecessor earned $4.1 million total, so box office expectations weren't particularly high for this outing.Still, there was some hope that the sequel could at least top the first movie. After all, The Raid: Redemption has surely built up some kind of fan base through two years of home video viewing. The Raid 2 promised more of the same kind of brutal action, but on a much bigger scale: instead of being set exclusively in one building, The Raid 2 is a sprawling crime epic. Also, the reviews were generally enthusiastic (79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and there were very loud and very enthusiastic proponents of the movie (the poster dubbed it "one of the greatest action movies ever made.")Therefore, it came as a bit of a surprise when The Raid 2...

Besides making lots and lots of money, "The Conjuring" solidified the fact that, even in whatever you're supposed to call this decade, you can still make a scary movie that doesn't rely exclusively on buckets of blood and extreme sexual violence. Instead, you could tell a classy, subtle, emotionally engaging tale of everyday people faced with an otherworldly presence... And that people would actually show up.
The same line of thinking is involved with this weekend's "Oculus," which we first saw back at SXSW --it's the tale of a pair of adult siblings (Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites) who confront the haunted mirror that was responsible for a seismic family tragedy many years earlier. Yes, that sounds like a very silly horror movie. But sometimes, in the words of George Michael, you've got to have faith.
But does "Oculus" actually bring it? Or does it leave you screaming... for more?...

Over the past few years, Prometheus star Noomie Rapace has found some unique thrillers to sink her teeth into on the big screen. Dead Man Down was a refreshing, quiet thriller, while Passion was erotic and sensual, and coming up later this year she has Child 44 and The Drop, both films with Tom Hardy. Now Deadline has word on a new thriller called Unlocked being set up as an indie project. The story will see the actress playing a female CIA interrogator duped into getting a terrorist to provide key information to the wrong side, thrusting her into the middle of a plan for a devastating biological attack in London. Read on! Mikael Hafstrom, who helmed last year's silly prison escape thriller Escape Plan with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone will direct Unlocked, and we just hope it's better than previous efforts like The Rite and 1408. Hafstrom isn't a terrible filmmaker,...

Now you may not have heard of Norwegian filmmaker Erik Skjoldbjærg, but his 1997 feature film debut Insomnia, was the source material for Christopher Nolan’s eponymous remake starring Robin Williams and Al Pacino. Only recently, Skjoldbjærg’s latest production Pioneer has also been confirmed to have a forthcoming Hollywood re-imagining, with word of George Clooney taking on the role of producer.

With its strong date night appeal, About Last Night opened strong on Valentine's Day and wound up ahead of fellow 80s remakes RoboCop and Endless Love this weekend. Still, it was no match for The Lego Movie, which easily led the box office over President's Day weekend. In its second outing, The Lego Movie added $49.8 million. That's a very light 28 percent drop, which is way ahead of most comparable titles (for example, The Lorax fell 45 percent in its second weekend). For the four-day frame, Lego earned $62.5 million, which ranks second all-time for President's Day weekend. So far, Lego has earned $142.8 million, and remains on track to easily surpass $200 million.Playing at 2,253 locations, the About Last Night remake opened to $25.6 million. Washington, Feb 13: Colin Farrell has praised his son James, who suffers from angelman syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that impairs speech, movement and balance, saying he is an absolute stud.
The 'Dead Man Down' star told People Magazine that 10-year-old James is an amazing boy and breaks down boundaries every day.
The 37-year-old actor had previously told the publication that James really inspires him because everything he's achieved in his life has come through the presence and the kind of will that is hard work.
Farrell had said at the time that things like walking and talking and eating and feeding, all.

A casting shakeup, sibling teamwork and an animated movie about gummy bears or something so let's get to it. When their worlds collide, they unexpectedly find salvation in one another." Wasn't this kinda the plot of "Dead Man Down"? Khurram Longi directs with production starting next month. Colin Farrell is in need of a career turnaround. After a string of misses including horror remake "Fright Night," the "Total Recall" would-be reboot, "Seven Pshychopaths" (where Farrell was dull and flat) and the mixed reviews for "Saving Mr. Banks" (not Farrell's fault), the Irish actor has "Winter's Tale" coming up February 14. But will this big-budget fantasy romance break the pattern? It's too bad so few people saw Niels Arden Oplev's grey and grainy crime romance "Dead Man Down" last year, where Farrell gave a moving performance opposite Noomi Rapace. And it's been a while since his brilliant comic turn in 2008's "In Bruges," even longer since his career-best performance in Terrence Malick's 2005 epic "The New World." He's coming up in Liv Ullman's take on Strindberg's "Miss Julie," co-starring Jessica Chastain, and "Solace," which looks like another formula thriller. Last year I made a list of my 50 most anticipated movies of 2013, but this year I struggled putting together a list of 40. The kind of movies I used to anticipate don't get me brimming with excitement as much as they saturate the market and we can fully expect to see one nearly every weekend and this year it starts early with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit on January 17. So no need to anticipate them, they'll be here soon enough, but I've already discussed all this, no need to trod the same path over again. My list would have also been easier to make had I not already seen six films you may want to add to your list of most anticipated: Dom Hemingway (April 4) Read My Review Enemy (March 14) Read My Review Ernest & Celestine (March 14) Only Lovers Left Alive (April 11) Read My Review Under the Skin (April 4) Read My Review Venus...

Selena’s turn as a gun-toting, car-almost-jacking thrill-seeker on the big screen has earned her a major nomination!
“I stood up and cheered!” raved absolutely no one who saw Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke‘s 2013 film Getaway, so it’s no surprise the action-thriller is nominated for three Razzie Awards, presented to the year’s less-than-stellar cinematic works. On a weekend in which most of the country was facing unusually frigid temperatures, Disney Animation's Frozen held well enough to take first place away from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Meanwhile, the lone newcomer Out of the Furnace was a major disappointment.Frozen fell 53 percent to $31.6 million, which is the highest post-Thanksgiving gross ever ahead of Toy Story 2 ($27.8 million). These last few years have been a wild ride for Noomi Rapace, but sitting down to talk with her at the Marrakech Film Festival this week, we found her refreshingly down to earth, giving the impression of someone who is fully aware of the lucky hand she’s been dealt and is not afraid to work hard to stay so lucky. Of course it was the Swedish version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” trilogy that originally saw Rapace break out internationally, and since then one of the things that has characterized her career has been her tendency to work again with people she has collaborated with before. So over the brief span of four years she did “Dead Man Down” for ‘Dragon Tattoo’ director Niels Arden Oplev, has two projects with Tom Hardy in the can, two with Mathias Schoenaerts and hopes to reteam with Ridley Scott for the mooted “Prometheus 2.

'Tis the season, for holiday-themed movies to bum rush the theaters. But before "The Christmas Candle" burns bright, "Frozen" casts its snowy spell, "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" brings in yuletide laughs, or "Black Nativity" lies awake in a manger, we get "The Best Man Holiday." It took no time at all for a comment to pop up on my Google+ posting of a link to my post here “attention, Hollywood: the wild success of Gravity means audiences have no trouble identifying with a female protagonist” scolding me for my ignorance about women in movies. Cuz what would I know? Tim McDonald schools me:
There are plenty of popular movies out there already that have female protagonists.
Not that he named one.
But I figured I would test his hypothesis.
So I took a look at Box Office Mojo and counted how many films will have gotten a wide release in North America by the end of 2013. (This is a way to measure what sorts of movies Hollywood makes, because they make up the vast majority of those wide releases.) The figure is: 141.
Then I counted how many films have women in leading roles. And here...
